What are the benefits of MSI?

  • IT Administrators in large enterprises are more familiar with MSI.

  • MSI makes it easier to deploy software on to multiple machines.

  • MSI also makes it easier for IT Administrators to control the behavior of Skype in their network.

How does MSI make it easier to deploy and control Skype?

  • The MSI format integrates well with a running Windows service.

  • It allows administrators to deploy Skype enterprise-wide through the use of Active Directory and Group Policy Objects.

  • It helps maintain security because software can be installed in an approved configuration without having to grant administrative rights where they would not otherwise be needed.

What is Windows Installer?

Windows Installer is a service for Microsoft Windows that installs and manages software applications. It manages the installation and removal of applications by applying a set of centrally defined setup rules during the installation process. These setup rules define the installation and configuration of the installed application. In addition, you use this service to modify, repair, or remove an existing application.

The Windows Installer technology consists of both the Windows Installer service and the Installer package, or .msi file, which is used to hold information regarding the application’s setup and installation.

Windows Installer also supports installing and running software from multiple sources, and can be customized by developers who want to install custom applications.

What is MSI?

The MSI package format is the standard file format for application distribution in the Windows environment. An MSI package is used by Windows Installer to perform controlled software installation, uninstallation and installation recovery in a way which is fully compatible with enterprise software distribution.

Where can I find more information about Windows Installer?

Information about Windows Installer may be found [here on Microsoft’s website](http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/msi/setup/windows_installer_start_page.asp)
