Skype 2.0 Released

By My status  on January 5, 2006 in Developer Blog.

Just in case you haven’t spotted it yet, Skype 2.0 has now gone gold, you can download the final release version from here.

Triona has been working hard on getting the API documentation ready for you guys to help you take advantage of the new functionality. Take a look here.

Remember that the button style changed with Skype 2.0 so you’ll want to use the new style icons for your applications. You can download them from here.

What's new in the release?

Better CPU utilisation

Smoother video playback

New and old sounds available. Yes that’s right, if you don’t like the new sounds you can use the old ones.

Finally don’t forget, add SkypeDevBlog to your Skype’s buddies list and you could win a replica Brazilian football top.

Bonjour,

Sur la dernière version de skype qui prend en charge la vidéo "smoother video playback" aucun icone ne permet de lancer l'interface caméra pour voir les gens contactés même après désinstallation de la version précédente. Si quelqu'un peut m'aider ce serait sympa merci.
Sinon superbe produit.

I downloaded Skype 2.0 as soon as I read the news on a PC magazine.
I was very interested in this possibility. But after the DL was finished I understood that this release will work only on WinXP. This is a big mistake.
There is a lot of people, like me, that loves W2K and will not change to XP (it is invasive, stubborn and uncontrollable).
As long as the core kernel is the same, shouldn't be a problem to allow the install of skype 2.0 also on W2K.
Please do that. Thanks
Albert

yes. i'm looking forward to new version for linux too. i don't like rebooting to windows everytime i want to use video call. and please, do it with ALSA - OSS and ARTS will soon be deprecated.

well i have no complains about sound quality in linux - if u have u better experiment with ur microfone settings (seting the volume to high on input will make it sound overdriven).

I'm waiting for video calls with skype on Linux

I have been a skype promotor for some time now. Nevertheless, I am very disapointed with skype for not providing a Linux release with video support.

It would be nice to have some feedback, is there going to be video support on Linux? Is there an estimated release date? Without these answers Linux users will have to start evaluating different alternatives, and stop promoting the use of skype :-(

!!!The voice is like drunk guy. Is that result from taking more video data? !!

It is good to have this new version. But I found the voice quality for both skype-skype calls and skype-telephone calls is very bad yesterday and today. I am thinking whether this result from the large amount of video data. If it is true, it is better keep the original audio skype. One good function is better than two bad functions!!

Thanks for a version with video! However what about the same for Mac. When will this be happening?

Please bring us an updated Linux version.

My understanding on this release cycle shows that skype puts functionality (bells and whistles) over compatibility. Just have a dedicated linux guru there work on keeping the code base at LEAST close.

Thanks in advance,

I have downloaded and set up Skype 2.0 but I don't have a webcam software. Skype's knowledgebase says Skype Accessory offers software but I can't find anything there. Is it coming?

I love using Skype, has really helped me keep in contact with friends back home after moving abroad! However, in your new relase of Skype 2.0, I was slightly disappointed to see that very few changes were made to the Mac version while the Windows version looks great!! I was curious as to when a video-capable version of Skype would be available to Mac users.

Mmmmm, when will be able to have Skype on my Nokia 770? People that uses this device are wondering if you are going to make us happy with the software for our Nokia 770 :o)

Affichage de l'heure locale:
Je correspond régulièrement avec un ami à l'Ile Maurice (Maurice est GMT+4) pourtant il apparaît dans ma liste avec une heure locale GMT+0.
Quelqu'un sait-il pourquoi??

I too would like to see a Linux version of 2.0. I have a lot of clients that would like to move to Linux or have and that use Skype. They would like to see 2.0 for Linux as well.

Thanks!

I love skype 2.0, I use it often and have spread the word to many, however it is frustrating that there is no video option for Mac OS, is that comming soon?? When will Skype for Windows be completely compatible with Skype for Mac OS? Thanks!

smb20731 | Wednesday, Jan 18

Hello! I am yet another person who is eager to see 2.0 arrive to Linux as well. In fact, looking at how things are right now, it almost seems as if the Linux version is abandoned (unless there is secret coding taking place behind the curtains). The Video4Linux API should be alright to make work with webcams.
The sound being bad in video calls might be due to lousy QoS (Quality of Service) for Internet Service Providers' setups in the hardware equipment, just a thought. If this is the case, it would mean that the bandwidth is not divided correctly between audio and video and so the result for the Skype user is presented in a very bad way.

I downloaded the new version of Skype last week and I was very impressed with the speed and quality of the video. However today I tried to have a skpye-skype conference call (with 2 other people) and was dissappointed to find out that there was no video for the conference call. I hope that this will be coming soon. cheers and thanks for all the good work.

I just gotta put my vote in for a new Linux release. I'm really glad 1.3 works well but video would be very nice to have working.

-------Running 2.6 with the new Slackware 11.. (KDE3).
