SkypeWeb Beta is here!

By My status  on January 20, 2006 in Developer Blog.

Those that signed up for SkypeWeb information will be pleased to hear that you are about to receive the details on how to take part in the SkypeWeb beta.

What is SkypeWeb?

SkypeWeb is a new feature of Skype 2.0 that allows Skype users to display their Skype online status on a Web page, email, blog, any other HTML enabled content or any other Internet-enabled application.

webpresence.JPG

The button below shows my current Skype status:

The great thing about SkypeWeb is it is so easy to add to your website, it works on a simple HTTP query.
This button was added by using the following line of HTML:

img src=http://mystatus.skype.com/lestermadden

What’s more you have control over the button style you display, just by manipulating the URL query string.

http://mystatus.skype.com/bigclassic/lestermadden

Developers

For developers returning a button may or may not be helpful in your application, so by changing the query string you can retrieve a text string:

http://mystatus.skype.com/lestermadden.txt

or if you prefer the result in a localized language

http://mystatus.skype.com/lestermadden.txt.fr

Similarly you can retrieve the status represented as a numeric value or in XML which will return all the localized strings.

Privacy

Naturally some people may not want others to see their Skype status.
SkypeWeb, by default, is off until you explicitly opt in by selecting the relevant item from the client.

How do I get the beta?

Your probably wondering how you get the beta, drop an email to SkypeWeb@Skype.com

Hello! I would like to know if It's possible in the version 2.0 to separate my skype contacts and my Skype out contacts like in the previous version. It was more confortable. What's the way for it? Thanx

hi lestermadden!
It is a good thing for SkypeWeb! do i need to send you email?

dionyseus | Saturday, Jan 21

well this skype-web has certainly one privacy flaw, since it displays the actual internal status of skype.

and there is a big difference between "offline" and "invisible" meaning people who access the xml or txt method will actually know that you are not offline for real, but simply prefer to seem as if you would be offline, meaning you are only invisible.

cheers

builtsmarterco i just checked your site. the button you have is a skype contact button. SkypeWeb extend the button to show a user whether you are online or not.

Hmm.. "with Skype 2"... so this is another great feature that Mac users cannot use, right? :-(
Wouldn't it be so much nicer to first implement one feature, let's say video for instance, for all platforms before coming up with another feature....?

Is there support for Skype software for embedded systems. Suppose if we have an embedded system with MIPS or ARM processor running Linux do you support these platforms. I saw a press news as

Skype CEO promises versions for Symbian and Embedded Linux cellphones
http://www.engadget.com/2005/04/20/skype-ceo-promises-versions-for-symbian-and-embedded-linux/

What processor achtechture do you support and how do we integrate the Skype software in our embedded system?

Hi everyone ! Did anyone manage to separate the SkypeIn contacts from the SkypeOut contacts, like in the previous version ? I´ve created groups to separate them, but it´s not the same.. this is really a minus in this version.
If anyone has another solution, I´d love to know! Bye.

You have an error in your SkypeWeb Beta.

While http://mystatus.skype.com/c.heindel and http://mystatus.skype.com/bigclassic/c.heindel work, the following calls return "unknown".

http://mystatus.skype.com/c.heindel.txt
http://mystatus.skype.com/c.heindel.xml

Thanks!

Looks great - looking forward to integrate in my blog.

Skype – embedded

We don’t have public API for embedded development so the only way to find out more is to partner with us. Filling out the partner form at http://www.skype.com/feedback/partner/index.php would be the best place to being the process.

SkypeOut Contacts

It does seem that the grouping has changed with Skype 2.0. Now the list is ordered alphabetically. Personally I like this approach as before I used to get lost and looking though the old list.

Have you tried considered creating a SkypeOut group for your contacts?

Is it possilbe to get that beta?

There is a SkypeMe button on our website http://www.knowlesys.com for a long time.

But sometimes when the client skype us, maybe we are not online. Now we can change it to Skype Status + Skype Me button.

When we are online, the browser can click the img to contact us with his/her skype!

1. Create a web page that provides skype capability
a. You define the page’s purpose
b. Include your skype status
c. Include a link to use VOIP to contact you (mobile, skype or both)
2. Here are some instructions:
a. Sign up for a free Skype account at www.skype.com
b. Skypeweb is described at http://share.skype.com/sites/devzone/2006/01/skypeweb_beta_is_here.html
c. Use the callto tag for making the call: something
d. You’ll need to work with somebody else to test, because you cannot skype yourself

Here is Dr. Dolly’s example (note the page has no purpose)
