Where Do I Start To Develop My App for Skype?

By My status Don Kennedy on September 28, 2006 in Developer Blog.

Of course it would be impossible for me to read your mind and know exactly what you are trying to develop and design.

I can however provide some helpful hints on ways to save you both time and effort to make your Skype application as quickly as possible and become a “Skype Application GURU” to a much larger audience than your friends and family.

Sorry Mom.

Soon, instead of saying “How come nobody has created..?..for Skype” people will be talking behind your back saying.. “Ah, that’s that Skype developer GURU”. So, grab some coffee and let’s get moving on making you the envy of those other “Cough” companies that wish their API interface could do what you can with Skype.

Login problems? No more!

By My status Peeter P. Mõtsküla on September 26, 2006 in Developer Blog.

As early as in May this year, some users had told us that they cannot login to DevZone with their Skype name and password. We filed a bug in Jira, and finally managed to resolve it today.

To cut the long story short: if you have reset your Skype password then you must change the password again from within your Skype Client before you can log in to DevZone.

Why Skype is Important

By My status  on September 17, 2006 in Developer Blog.

At VON in Boston last week, Lou Guercia of Unyte asked “Why Skype is Important”. He presents a compelling business case for Working with Skype. At the same time, Lou’s colleague, Gershon Goren, was at the Tallinn beta testers days to keep on track with API development. Gershon said

“now I start to understand the roots of Skype’s success - [Tallinn is a] great creative environment”
- another reason why Skype is important. A third reason why Skype is important is because it is founded on sharing a revolutionary technology that allows the whole world to talk for free. The beta days brought together people who share with Skype; beta testers, translators, and developers who give their time and talent to improve and enhance the Skype experience. Sharing is good.

One for all? NOT!

By My status Peeter P. Mõtsküla on September 13, 2006 in Developer Blog.

Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun, writes:

at Sun, there’s no one message for all audiences.

Developers care about bleeding edge innovation, but have little buying power; IT executives have all the buying power, but generally avoid the bleeding edge (unless they’re supercomputer specialists). Developing nations and development authorities care about intellectual property freedom, and the impact of technology on society. Most IT buyers are more worried about shared services, SOX compliance and financial return. Same technologies, perhaps at differing stages of evolution, but wildly differing audiences.

I guess the same applies to Skype’s ecosystem. So here’s the question: What do you care about?

Icons and Strings

By My status Peeter P. Mõtsküla on September 1, 2006 in Developer Blog.

A few days ago, Peter Kalmström wrote about more than 2600 Skype UI strings having been made available to the developers in 27 languages. Today, we have also published over 100 Skype icons in 5 sizes.

All these components are licensed under Skype Component License which allows everybody to use them in their applications free of charge as long as they follow some simple and reasonable restrictions, like using the icons and strings only in the original context, not allowing their applications to do anything evil, and making sure their users can get in touch with them if needed.

UPDATE on 2006-09-13: Skype Emoticons are now available under the same license.
