The Skype add-in for Internet Explorer causes IE crashes

By My status Peter Kalmström on June 15, 2007 in .

Last week Microsoft emailed us and said they are getting a large number of Windows Error Reports from a recent version of the Skype add-in for Internet Explorer.
Thus:

  • I deeply apologize for any trouble this might be causing you
  • We are working hard to find the solution to the problem
  • We thank Microsoft for reaching out to us to notify us of this problem.

You now have three options for how to solve this problem:

  1. Update to the latest version of Skype 3.6 . As far as we know it fixes the vast majority of Internet Explorer crashes. Download it by clicking on one of the download links on the Skype main website.
If you have a Skype version earlier than 3.6.0.216 we advise that you upgrade to benefit from this update.
    Note that, as usual:
    • You will not need to un-install anything - just install over the existing version
    • The chat-history, contact list and all other settings in Skype will stay the same
    • You don't have to sign up for a new Skype name, your password and username stays the same
  2. Uninstall the add-in from the add-in menu shown here (click to enlarge):

If you choose to un-install Skype will remember that preference and not try to install the IE add-on again. To install again you will need to specifically tell the Skype installer to include this option (click to enlarge):

  3. Another way to get rid of the add-on is to go into Tools-Manage add-ons in Internet Explorer. If you disable the Skype items there that should make sure IE doesn't crash due to Skype.

Some background:

The last few months we have bundled the Skype add-in for Internet Explorer with the Skype client. It has become really popular and we are delighted to see that a lot of phone calls are now being initiated from the web pages. We are continually trying to improve everything about this add-in. Most importantly we are trying to get better at

  • Minimizing false positives - we do not want to  highlight numbers that are not phone numbers
  • Messing up web pages - we do not want to change the html in any way that is bad for the user or the web developer
  • Installation and un-install - it should be as simple as possible

Evidently something went wrong this time for a small minority of users.

To learn a bit more about the Skype add-on for Internet Explorer - please look at this 3 minute video demonstration about Skype add-on for Internet Explorer:

Changes:

Since MS is now automatically redirecting everyone having this problem to this page we will continually update this page so that it reflects the latest status. I'll note changes here:

  • The 2.2.0.144 version is now published with Skype 3.6. .117 turned out to not entirely perfect. All remaining issues are now solved
  • The 2.2.0.117 version is now published with Skype 3.5.0.234 - we are hopeful that this build will findally stop these crashes.
  • The 2.2.0.105 version of the Skype add-on for Internet Explorer is now included in the GOLD version of Skype 3.5
  • Latest BETA version is 2.2.0.112 linked above.
  • Seems this bug is inflicting not only Vista and the previous version of Skype (as was first posted) - but several Skype versions and both Vista and XP. Thus we are now recommending un-install or upgrade of this component until we can publish a Skype client hotfix (hopefully July 4th).
  • More information indicates that it is NOT the latest version having the problem (as was first posted) but instead an earlier version. Thus - I am now suggesting upgrades instead of un-installing.
  • Previously we "blamed" Vista - it has nothing to do with it. Most of the reported crashes are actually coming from Win XP Home

Hello ~

Thank you ... Microsoft and Skype ... for getting onto this!

I upgraded to Skype version 3.2 a few days ago, within hours of contracting a nasty Trojan Horse. Subsequently, the intermittent IE crashes were thought to be the consequence of the trojan going into remission doing software removal and resururfacing under a new name within the Registry.

Go get'em Skype!

gala.rea | Saturday, Jun 16

I have recently re-installed my OS (a little over a week ago) and decided to download the newest version of Skype... mistake I think... I have had many IE7 crashes and so I uninstalled and re-installed Skype without the browser plug-in as IE7 indicated that the plug-in was the issue. I am still crashing.. IE7 is indicating that the plug-in is still the issue yet I did not install it the second time around.. any ideas?

earlofmar | Sunday, Jun 17

Don't believe everything MS tells you. I got the error that forwards me here because of a Skype problem. Frankly, I do NOT have, nor have I ever had, the Skype browser add-on installed. I do have skype, and am happy with it, but I dislike ANY form of browser add-on I don't plan on using on a daily basis, and skype does not qualify. Therefore, the diagnosed "problem" is all MS, not 3rd party.

jindaihideo | Sunday, Jun 17

I am using the latest version of Skype (3.2.0.163) under Windows Vista but nevertheless I have IE7 crashing because of the Skype add-on. :-(
I have simply disabled the add-in for the time being, until an update available. To disable the add-on open Internet Explorer, select Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage add-ons
Select the "Skype" item in the list and set it to "disable". Do the same for the "Skype add-on" item, then close and re-opne Internet Explorer.
Just set them back to "Enable" to re-activate the add-ons.

Hello all,

I am not technical and I am really frustrated with my decision to buy a new Dell notebook running Windows Vista and IE 7. I have now tried to install Skype four times and everytime it crashes IE.

Skype support have been very responsive (for which I am grateful) but Skype 3.2.0.163 has made no difference and disabling the IE add-ons hasn't helped either.

I see that some people are getting around it - is it possible that there is some other 3rd party software (such as my Logitech camera/mic driver) that is also involved?

Help!

richardwarland | Wednesday, Jun 20

Thanks to gnkieffer | Monday, Jun 18 and a very helpful posting, i also disabled the two skype add-ons for my acer notebook (windows vista) and no longer experience IE crash. I have no intention of ever enabling them again!

forestmatskype | Wednesday, Jun 20

I think this is a common occurrence with a new OS. It's extremely difficult to develop existing software for a new OS and I think Skype has done well.

Typically this type occurrence isn't due to the application’s interaction (Skype in this case) with the base platform; Skype no doubt thoroughly tested the application on Vista and IE7. Generally those of us experiencing this issue have something in common, such as some other add-on or resident application Skype did not test (they can’t possibly test all iterations of loaded software prior to release.) I have 18 total add-ons running and sometimes they don’t play nice. The trick with a new OS is to be patient with your vendors; they’ll find a fix. If they don’t, they won’t last long.

The best thing we can do is provide feedback to Skype to help them determine cause.

Note: My error occurred when coming out of hibernation from a low battery state.

P.S. I don't work for Skype - LOL

charlietucson | Wednesday, Jun 20

To save me on crashes on the internet, using Microsoft xp Professionl and internet explorer 7 I had regrettable to uninstall Skype, because uninstall the add in for internet explorer 7 did not help.

I am not amused.

renecohrt | Friday, Jun 22

are you solving the problem and please let me know.

renecohrt | Friday, Jun 22

Hi there,

I'm experiencing this problem on Windows XP SP2 as well.

cK

christopher.kalie | Friday, Jun 22

surprised how few complaints you've had..
XP SP2, crashes constantly.. and my partner's brand new vista laptop too.

are you fixing it?

daniel.smith.skype | Friday, Jun 22

I have had the same problem and disabled the add-ons and IE7 works fine. trouble now is that I have no sound at all from Skype either through speakers or headphones!! Not a happy bunny. Come on Sykpe get it sorted, surely you must be working with Microsoft on this??

richp_1811 | Friday, Jun 22

Thanks for all your comments!
Latest development is that we now have about 15 people with reproducable problems running a debug version. We hope to soon have this fixed for everyone!

peter.kalmstrom.nu | Sunday, Jun 24

Nice to be with you all.

I am again working with Skype 3.2.163 but without add ons in Internet Explorer.

It seems to function.

renecohrt | Sunday, Jun 24

Hi, I use Windows Vista Ultimate on a high end laptop with latest Explorer and all updates etc. The tool bar won't even allow me to uninstall it and is causing crashes and reboots and slows the whole system down. Obviously it's incompatible with Vista and rather than asking us, why not just pay the cost of liasing with Microsoft so you can get the code right? I appreciate that SKYPE is "free" but at the end of the day SKYPE has a captive audience it can onsell services to. Up until now, one of the great things about SKYPE is that it worked better then anything else. Now it causes my whole system to crash. Sure, that's largely a VISTA issue more than a SKYPE add on point of view, but the commercial reality is that new systems are sold with VISTA. If it's not resolved through MICROSOFT then users like me who are bound to VISTA will have to stop using SKYPE. That effectively means millions of users won't be able to use SKYPE, so I encourage SKYPE to fix this within days not weeks. I can't afford this system instability. Sorry guys.

glynmaclean | Monday, Jun 25

I'm getting the problem on a PC that has just been completely reinstalled (Win XP, NOT Vista), using a Skype version that I just downloaded (i.e. 2 days ago) and the MS side is completely up to date with all criticals, most software, and all hardware fixes.

But thanks for the info above, I'll just remove the IE toolbar.

chrisbedford600 | Monday, Jun 25

Oops I just tried to remove the toolbar as described above - not installed. The PC is running IE 7.

chrisbedford600 | Monday, Jun 25

Windows XP with SP2 is having the same problem, my XP and Vista are both running this problem for over a month, work with Microsoft for a week then figured out the problem is not Windows, hope it get fixed as soon

yuyi429 | Tuesday, Jun 26

I know us less technology-savvy people can be a pain but there are quite alot of us out there. I am running Windows XP and have tried unistalling Skype completely... disaster!... I still get IE crashing so whatever damage has been done looks more widespread than can be solved by an uninstall. Do I pay for a technician to come fix my PC now or wait until Skype get around to updating this page?

familiajack | Thursday, Jun 28

I am using Vista Ultimate on my desktop and have paid for Skype for a year. Skype name vbrandlein. My credit has not shown up on my Skype account. My wife also uses Skype with Windows XP and has no trouble at all. I cannot make any regular phone calls as my Skype credits do not show up. However, I can use Skype to talk to my daughter and others that use Skype. Please help me with this issue. This is the fourth message I have sent to other Skype boards. Before I upgraded to Vista I had no problems with Skype then.

vbrandlein | Thursday, Jun 28

Thanks to skype and MS for the professionalism in dealing with this matter. Can people stop complaining so bitterly... it is not a perfect world. Nothing is perfect. The important thing is that there is a serious resolve to fix it and that there is excellent communication about it. Thus, I say good and well done. We're waiting!

imesco01 | Friday, Jun 29

This crashed on me too today, but I am using XP sp2, NOT vista.

glenn.newell | Friday, Jun 29

As a computer technician with 48 years experience I'd like to help with this problem.

I use Skype version 3.2.0.152 with Vista Ultimate and have only 5 add-ons: the other 3 are from McAfee; Scriptproxy Browser helper object, Siteadvisor Browser helper object and McAfee Siteadvisor Toolbar.

Today I disabled the 2 SkypeIEPlugin.dll entries to see if that fixes it. If it still happens I will uninstall the SkypeIEPlugin.dll entries and let you know the results.

This has been happening to me without the IE add-in on XP PRO SP2. This has been happening almost every day lately.

jonathanr_sonic | Saturday, Jun 30

Just wanted to say I'm impressed with the way Skype is handling this so far. I wish more software companies would communicate like this. Things are always going to go wrong, but keeping folks updated on what's being done always makes such occurences easier to deal with. Thanks Skype (& MS$ for proactively sharing their info)

senwebtek | Sunday, Jul 1

Hi guys. Thanks to the Skype team to try to fix the problem with Vista.I'm waiting for the Hot fix. I just got a new computer with Vista Ultimate and the first program that I installed was Skype. I was very disappointed to notice that IE crashes often when I use Skype. Also very disappointed to notice that my webcam "Logitech Quickcam" is not working in Vista. I'm seriusly thinking of switching back to Win XP.

alessandro.simeoli | Friday, Jul 6

Many, Many thanks to gnkieffer!!!!
I have Windows XP Pro; installed Skype 3.2.0.163 on July 3 and immediately had crashing problems with IE7. Not good when I need my bookmarked research resources for a paper I am writing!

I am not satisfied with a BETA fix so, thanks to gnkieffer, I have disabled both the Skype browser extension and the Skype add-on (MasterMind)and will wait for the fix.

I think this option provided by gnkieffer should be one of the options suggested by Skype at the top of this webpage.

cynthia.waddell | Thursday, Jul 19

Thank you Skype Team!!!
I using XP Pro and Skype 3.2.0.175. When I try to exit IE an eror occurs. IE cannot closed directly.I just Uninstall the add-in from the add-in menu. It works!!!

roytambiga | Wednesday, Jul 25

I use an HP laptop with Vista Home. The toolbar menu was not giving me an option to uninstall, so I opted to unisntall the whole thing (skype, altogether), and reinstalled the latest version. Now I don't have the plug in, but my system keeps crashing several times a day. I have the latest version of skype, my vista is 100% updated, everything else seems to be working correctly. I DEPEND on skype; I can't just uninstall it and use msn messenger. I appreciate you are working on it... but It would be good to have an update on how things are going. Evidently, the solution you proposed is not the end of the problem... good try, but more bugs seem to be unraveling.

gballarino | Saturday, Jul 28

Ok, now..... thanks to gnkieffer i discovered the following:

even with the plug-in UNINSTALLED (and by that i mean, having uninstalled skype and reintalled without the pluggin), IE was showing the "skype-add-on" as "enabled" in the add-on list. ??? how is this possible ???. I disabled it from IE > tools > internet-options > programs > add-ons. Let's see if it works.

I'm left wondering...... is the add-on really uninstalled?? i don't see the icon in the toolbar, but the add-on is active? is there anything else I should uninstall?

Seccond.... there were 2 add-ons (sic): 1) "Skype", 2) "Skype(add-on)". I disabled both. What are those and why are there 2 of them?

gballarino | Saturday, Jul 28

Why are you force including this garbage with Skype? I can't wait for my year to end, so I never have to use Skype again. I just got a new PC and now having lots of problem removing the add-on. I hate this add-on, and it should have been a choice from the beginning. Very disgusted, I already paid my dues, stop adding crapware to Skype. It's already bloated enough.

swisspass | Wednesday, Aug 1

The Add-On crashes on IE7, but works PERFECTLY on firefox. It turns to be pretty useful, so if you want to keep it, download firefox. Personally, I like it much better than IE.

yendigb | Thursday, Aug 16

I have upgraded to 3.5.1.214 CHT version but still crashed very often with my IE7. Please help!

coupancat | Tuesday, Aug 21

I've been getting IE7 crashes, mainly when I close IE7, ever since installing Skype. I tried an update to Skype 3.5.0.229 but still had the problem.

I've now disabled _ALL_ Skype add-ons and the problem is fixed. (To do this, use the "Show" drop box in the IE add-on manager to seek out anything from Skype and disable it).

Given that in the first two days of installing Skype I couldn't even sign in due to technical problems at Skype, I'm extremely unimpressed by Skype!

The add on of skype slowing the opening of internet explorer disable it

cosenzafrank | Wednesday, Sep 5

Hi,

I upgraded to the latest Skype version.
But my IE is still refusing to close and the problem solution finder redirects me to this page as Skype is the guilty one.
Is the a way to remove the "Skype addon for Internet Explorer". I don't see any use for that and I can't use IE normally due to that.
My OS is Vista x64, Home Premium edition.

Thanks,
J. Da Silva (netquim@gmail.com)

FYI, I just installed Skype and turned off some options about IE during install (perhaps just toolbar?). IE crashes on close window. This is on a laptop with XP. This was a fresh install of 3.5.0.239

I beleive the problem is with internet explorer 7.0 ,when it first came out I installed it and removed it after constint problems. I thought it may be time to reinstall, but see I'm not the only one with the problem. Surprisingly Microsoft keeps sending messages to download the newest ersion of Skype. Thanks Matt Ferro

mattferro | Saturday, Oct 20

It's interesting that you say the latest version will fix it. I installed that version first (never had it before), and my IE crashes every time I open it (without the addon to IE itself, even). So, I'm not thinking that fixes the problem?

merchgirljenn | Friday, Oct 26

Just installed Skype V3.5.0239 onto a fresh install of Vista Business. I was expereincing occasional IE7 crashes on close after making changes to EI7 running in protected mode. Tried to remove the Skype add in for IE but I can't get it to go away.
***** Please DO NOT install this sort of add-in without warning ****** We know WHY you want to do this (to increase Skype phone usage) but you need to be up front with your users or they will feel cheated.

paul-everington | Sunday, Oct 28

I experienced the same problem as most people did - IE7 crash in my XP environment. I eventually managed to get my IE problem resolved, but the question is when Skype knows the add-on will cause problem and why in 3.5 still contains such an add-on to cause people trouble.
I tried 3.6 Beta and it had the same result. The add-on needs to be removed before things can run normally. I worked in the IT industry and I found it frustrated and talk about most people are just ordinary computer users. I can imagine if most people may feel helpless.
Here is some of my input:
1. This is a known problem to Skype and yet there is no real action to address the root cause - remove the problematic add-ons.
2. When it comes to system development, I doubted that the IE7 component was tested thoroughly. I can understand if Skype causes Yahoo messenger or MSN messenger not working properly, but Skype tried to add something to IE and "hoping" that will not cause a prblem. To me, this is totally unacceptable.

wingfai_hon | Monday, Oct 29

The Skype ie add-on issue has yet to be solved. The add-on keeps crashing ie 7 even with Skype's 3.6 beta version. At this point in time there is no alternative solution to disabling the Skype add-ons.

Okay, can someone help? I have the latest version of Skype (3.5.0.239) and IE (7.0...). I'm told by Skype that it has installed the add-on. I don't anything Skypey in my toolbar. In Tools>Manage Add-Ons Skype does not appear. Is that because they've removed it from the recent update?

doctorrog | Sunday, Nov 11

If you download today, you should get the 3.6 version. Maybe that will help with your issue.

For me, Skype is interfering with Outlook (apparently), even the 3.6 version. When I try to send a message in Outlook, explorer stops working and then immediately restarts.

I am thinking about going back to my old laptop when I want to use Skype.

I just fixed IE 7 (running under Vista) freezing all the time at certain websites. I did so before I even ran onto this thread by turning off/on the IE plug-ins. Yup (that's US southern/western speech), it was the Skype plug-ins that were doing it. I then searched for why they even existed and ran on to this thread. For what it's worth, I am running Skype version 3.6.0.216. So Skype's got a ways to go if they think that version is going to solve the problem.

blue_ridge_rider | Sunday, Nov 18

Hi blue_ridge_rider!
I am very sorry to hear that you are still having problems with the IE add-in.
Some questions:
1. Which websites were causing trouble???
2. Are you sure you really have the latest version? Did you upgrade the IE add-on with your latest install? You can verify the version number by checking the file version of the SkypeIEPlugin.dll file. Latest published version (with Skype) is 2.2.0.144
3. Could you please try to reproduce the issue with the latest BETA version of the IE add-on published at http://developer.skype.com/SkypeToolbars/ ?

Best regards
Peter Kalmström, PM Skype Toolbars

This issue is still alive and kicking. Skype, wake up already. You have known about this issue for close to six months now? Hello??? Here's an idea, FIX THE PROBLEM or disable this "feature" until it's fixed!!!!!!!

Anyhow, personal experience: I'm on IE7 under Windows XP. Just installed the latest skype today and IE stopped working on certain sites, like www.easysite.com/will

I then called Microsoft and paid $63.57 for tech support. The tech lady (thank you India) surprisingly knew her stuff. She walked me through disabling add-ons in IE and then it hit me... I just installed a new version of Skype. Long story short... I narrowed the issue down to "Skype add-on (mastermind) - Browser Helper Object." Disabling this browser "Helper Object" solved my problem and got IE back and running. I like the name, "Helper Object." Funny name for a plug in that crashes your browser.

I'm guessing this feature is what lets you click on phone numbers while you are browsing to make the call using Skype. I don't really care to have that functionality anyhow. It messes up the look up websites and if I want to call a number that I found online then I'll enter it or copy and paste it into Skype.

Bottomline, I love Skype but I wish their "world class" engineers and their QA department would wake up already. If I were eBay I might want my $4B back after dealing with this drama today. BTW Skype, you owe me $63.57 for the phone call into Microsoft.

ssivulka | Thursday, Nov 22

I've removed the IE add-on but it just doesn't work - it stays off for that session, but when I open IE again the add-on is still there ang continues causing problems, I have to lose my session and reopen everything at least once a day! And I havefollowed all the procedures for removing the add-on. Any idea why this happens?

enrico.alexander | Friday, Nov 30

Downloaded skype onto new computer (XP Pro) yesterday and IE kept crashing in certain sites. As I did not know of this problem with skype I have spent the better part of a day uninstalling/reinstalling IE scanning computer etc. Of course this did not help. Then decided to try to uninstall recently added software - skype being the newest was removed first and WOW IE now working again...
Will not be installing skype on any new computer again and will therefore have to limit skype usage to when i can bear to boot up my old computer.
Skype, like ssivulka said, WAKE UP. Why not put a warning on the download page to tell users to disable the add-on, or warning them that if they experience problems after installing skype this is what to do, instead of wasting our time. I've always loved Skype but now I'm really losing confidence in you.

cwicky | Friday, Nov 30

I have skype 3.6 with no addons and IE7 stops responding on any website that has flash running on it.

tu.storm_trouper1 | Tuesday, Dec 4

i have the lastest skype installed(downloaded from skype main page) just yesterday, and most recent update of IE7 but skype add-on(mastermind) is causing a slowness when shutting down IE7. i have disabled the add-on for now. i thought it was my new pc for a while, until i went through the add-on for IE7 and disabled them and turning on 1 by 1.

huang.hu579 | Wednesday, Dec 5

Even with the newest version of Skype I have the same problems with IE 7, running under Vista.

Some websites are crashing, others not.
After disabling the addin the problems are over.

I don't understand why it happened, because I had at least two months in which everything worked well.

topdognl | Sunday, Dec 9

Skype is cool. I love it. But it is absolutely inadmissible to distribute software that crashes one of the most important parts of the operating system. Extremely annoying ! Be fair and name the plugin as beta.

wurzensepp71 | Wednesday, Dec 12

Well the problem is still there in the latest version (3.6.0.244) - the fix is the same as outlined above ONCE YOU REALISE THAT SKYPE IS THE PROBLEM. Why the default option (which is not even part of the main installation path!) is still to install this 'bug' I cannot understand.
The main crashes (IE freezes) occurred for me at the M'soft Update Site at different stages of the process and also different depending on how you start IE Update (from Start Menu or from within IE) which may explain my frustration
Aside from IE the rest of Skype is great but coming to this page at the end of December 2007 - over six months after IE issues were first reported, running the latest version (no problems with Update site until the latest version) and with MS playing around with their update site (now there is Silverlight) I'll not be installing SkypeIEPlugIn.dll again anytime soon. Sorry guys

OMIGOD! I am so relieved and excited to finally know what the hell this problem was that kept causing my IE7 to repeatedly restart itself. I have a brand new high-end Sony laptop with Vista Ultimate operating system, and I really thought that I was going to have to return it, because I just couldn't figure this out. It is happening every single day I can't even have more than one window open at a time....so frustrating, but hopefully from reading the comments on this thread, I can implement some of the solutions provided. I appreciate the efforts on the part of Skype and MicroSoft to resolve this matter.

Use FireFox will make you happy!!! too much problem with IE.....

fan_zhang_canada | Wednesday, Jan 30

Hi everyone, I have read with interest the comments both negative and positive about the ongoing issues with Skype. In my line of work I am often called out to many different sites, wether home, office or corporate and a common issue as stated by the team at Skype is that although they do their very best to test Skype so that you and I have a pleasant and trouble free experience with Skype, I think it’s important to remember that the total number of different variants of how computers are set up cannot be tested for 100% compatibility. That said, if you look at the total number of users of Skype, they have done a pretty good job, not only in terms of customer feedback which is sadly lacking in the majority of software and hardware cases but also in terms of their proactive approach towards working WITH you the end user and Microsoft to resolve this issue.
I have on many occasions found success with many clients to resolve their problems by employing Skyps work a rounds or updates, but not always; its then that I suggest using a different internet browser (for example Firefox “NOT AN ENDORSEMENT”) which seems to resolve the issues by uninstalling IE, it’s a last ditch approach but none the less it works and makes for a happy end user who still gets the functionality of their Skype but also a problem free experience whilst browsing the internet.
Let’s not forget that Microsoft has an active role in this and is constantly working to "fix" known issues with Internet Explorer with constant updates of one type or another.
So while it may seem an easy thing to do (fixing the problem with the Skype plug in) the issues are far more complex and I do congratulate the Skype team for the work they have done to date and there open communication with us all on this issue.
NOTE: I am in no way affiliated with or have interests with Skype in any way other than as a end user of their software. I am a computer business owner with a very active interest in how Microsoft and Skype resolve this issue for my clients.
I will be following this issue closely.
Cheers

that´s a nice one ((If you haven't left a comment here before, you may need to be approved by the site owner before your comment will appear. Until then, it won't appear on the entry. Thanks for waiting.) Censorship??

OK. have had repeated crashes on IE 7 (vista ultimate) due to skype plug in, running the latest version of skype. What I have found is the following. It only crashes when loading the page gives a loading error (loaded but with faults), most of the time active content (java or whatever) is on the site to be loaded. Seems like the crashes have something to do with the above. either IE not loading correctly, or skype addin to soon with checking for numbers or skype names, or active content interfering with loading process.
Anyhow a lot of flashy websites are sloppy programmed and causing problems with loading.

Last Thanksgiving, I replaced my XP with a HP Pavilion Slimline with Vista Home Premium. I used Skype on my XP with no problems; however, I have regular IE not responding errors and Microsoft points me to a Skype add-on error. I have 3.6.0.216 installed so is there anything else available to fix this? This is extremely annoying! Thank you.

Am I reading this correctly? Has this been going on for 7 months?!?!?! This just started for me in the last 2 weeks. I haven't changed anything on my PC in the last 2 weeks. But I have to say it is VERY annoying! I have been using Skype for almost a year.

I am very concerned about this continuing. If I uninstall Skype, will it stop???

Thx

I was experiencing this problem with IE and, not knowing Skype was to blame, began using Mozilla Firefox instead. Haven't had any problems since. Not a great fix, but a quick one...

Please stop installing your shitty IE plugin with Skype, KTHX

Still a problem with Skype 3.6.0.248 that I downloaded on Feb 28 as a new user. I am running XP Pro version 5.1.2600 service pack 2 build 2600 on a brand new Dell Latitude D830. Uninstalling the add-in solved the problem.

I installed Skype Newest version from site (360.2.4.8) on my friends Toshiba 32 bit Vista Home Premium laptop. Its brand new. Updated it fully and installed Skype. He had the same issues as described on this page. Random IE freezing, crashes, slow reactions from PC. So I installed it on my XP PRO SP2 desktop system and started having the same problems! Well, with help from this page and other research and tweaks I think I have found the solution for IE7 users on any version Windows. (1) Open Internet Explorer, (2) Click Tools tab and goto Manage Add ons click Enable or Disable Add ons, (3) It should start out in Add ons currently loaded into Internet Explorer look for All Skype Entries and make sure they are ENABLED click ok and close Internet Explorer, (4) Open Skype and goto Tools, options, advanced, advanced settings and make sure the top box (Associate Skype with callto: links on web) has a checkmark in it so its enabled. Click save and totally close Skype, (5) Open Internet explorer and in the same place you clicked tools there should be a Skype icon, if there is not click the ">>" button in that area and then click skype icon. Pull its tab down and remove Skype Add on from Internet Explorer. Follow its instructions including making sure to close all instances of Internet Explorer when it asks, (6) Open Skype and go back to advanced settings page from step 4 and clear the check mark from the first box (Associate Skype with callto: links on web) so it knows its not being used anymore and doesnt exist, click save. There you are all done. I think my fix works around registry problems and is considered uninstalling in the right order so to speak. Take care and let me know if this helped you! Ryan Miller

I still have a problem with Skype 3.6.0.244 and IE 7 on WinXP SP2 (all patches applied as of 2008-03-15). Everything works fine for normal browsing, but when I want to visit the windows update page, the browser freezes and I have to kill it. It doesn't always freeze exactly at the same loading stage, but it always ends up frozen. I disabled add-ons in IE one by one and found out that if I disable the add-on called "Skype add-on (mastermind)", the problem goes away. Note that the other Skype add-on called "Skype" doesn't cause a problem. Both add-ons reference "SkypeIEPlugin.exe".

jlherren | Saturday, Mar 15

I saw a different weird behavior- whenever I closed (Alt-F4) an IE window I would get a pop-up saying IE had unexpectedly quit, then it would restart.
Go to * Tools->InternetOptions->[Programs]->[ManageAddOns] *
Look for skype and other junk. I disabled skypeIEPlugin.dll and things seem to be better. For good measure I also disabled the Yahoo and ThinkVantage junk, so it may not have been skype...

I am still experiencing this problem, even with the latest MS updates and Skype version.

The freezing up occurs when visiting sites like MS Update/Facebook etc. Many sites do not cause the feeze up.

The problem occurs on more than one computer. I just installed on a brand new laptop and found the same problem to be present. Prior to that I thought it was just my home PC needing a "clean up"

Disabling the skype add-ons does help, but I am really hoping for it to be solved.

Also I always used to wonder if MSFT used to do anything with the error reports....seems as if there is value to submitting them after all.

Thanks to Skype for all the updates on the issue.

The night I installed the latest version of Skype (downloaded last week), I had problems with Internet explorer not responding periodically. I didn't load any add in's unless they were part of the standard installation package. I'd venture to say that there is still some sort of an incompatibility between Skype and IE. I was left with no choice but to un-install Skype.

Really annoying thing. most people don't know that it is skype that is crashing exlorer. so they go on hating IE and microsoft even more. Nice job skype but very bad practice. be good at what you do and don't try to take over the world.

I am running Vista Premium Home 64. Running the latest Version of Skype 3.6.0.248. The problem is related to teh skype add-on (mastermind).

It is easey to reproduce the error. I am using a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7141 (UI) Router with the latest Firmware-Version 40.04.50. if I try to run the webconsole (fritz.box) the IE crashes. (while firefox still works fine)

Disabling the mastermind skype add-on helps.

I am surprised that this issue is still not solved. Can anybody explain me what this add-on is doing anyway?

Thanks

It's nearly a year since this problem arose and I have just experienced the problems described with a recently downloaded version of Skype (in last 2 months).

Why is this taking so long to sort out?????????

I think I may need to uninstall Skype and use something else, MSN or similar...

jbsberg | Sunday, May 4

Yes, I could solve my same problem by disabling "Skype add-on (mastermind)" through "Manage Adds-on" of Tools.

Many Thanks to your idea, comments, doctorrog (Nov.11), ssivulka (Nov.22) and jiherren (Mar 15).

A friend and I are having problems with Skype, just like everyone else. Except, my friend's laptop hard drive is currently broken. Her computer kept freezing up during video calls, and soon after crashed. It is impossible for her to reboot her computer using her hard drive. Is there another way to reboot and install either windows vista or xp; and/or continue using Skype? If anyone can help. please let me know.

Thanks,

So I just found out about this issue. IE has crashed, but the problem is I cannot
close IE with task manager. I have closed my laptop twice and the page doesnt disappear. I have uninstalled skype the lastest version 3.8. No change has occurred.
I dont know how to get rid of the page. What should I do to make it disappear.
I tried to open a new IE page to enable/disable the add on skype thing in the tool bar, but nothing has happened.

I hope someone call help me.

For english version... call me

sorry for my english..but i hope everybody understand.I have xpsp3,IE 7 and the latest skype version 3.8.0.115,skypeieplugin.dll version 2.2.0.176.My problem is not an ie crash, but when i page to finance.yahoo.com and real quotes option is turned on the page can load but after a while the "famous"message(whith sound):impossible to open the page etc..appears.Turning off real quotes option works fine of course.I think the problem occurs when the streamerapi.finance.yahoo.com/streamer tries to load. Now i have 2 skype addons in IE and disabling only one (manifest)works out,i can get real quotes no problem.ciao

Peter,

I just purchased a new dell notebook yesterday and it started crashing constantly. So I googled crashes and it led me to this forum. That is complete joke. How can you expect us to pay for your services when you crash our computer. I find this completely unacceptable to not have integrated the skype program with Microsoft. Not like you didn't know as Microsoft controls what 98% of the market..great it works with Apple the 2 customers that use it in Bhutan will be estatic. (Not that there is anything wrong with Bhutan seems like a cool country).

Remove the Ad-on. It's not worth the trouble. I'm constantly disabling it since I'm a programmer and need to create/delete new users on a daily basis. I love Skype but this really is a headache.

Most annoying to find the skype add-on cannot be moved on the IE7 toolbar. Users must uninstall the add-on so their preferred (handier) Home icon is where we want it. To design that add-on so it cdoesn't work with the toolbar customization options (even if thereafter locking the toolbar), only to find it can't be moved from the first slot, seems both lazy, but likely just a means of monopolizing the user's toolbar. As for sneakily forcing auto payments assure subscriptions are forceably re-subscribed, too is at the very least insulting and at most, illegal.
