Skype name recognition in Skype 4.1

By My status Peter Kalmström on August 24, 2009 in .

Have you seen small presence icons while browsing the web lately? If so, then you have probably experienced the Skype name recognition feature in action. With that feature enabled you will be able to see if your friends are online on Skype even when you are not actively using Skype. For example you will see the Skype presence in Facebook as in this video:

FacebookScreenCastMini
We didn’t build this feature just for Facebook, though! You will see it on any web-page where people’s names appear. Of course it works well in Salesforce (another video) and other online CRM systems, as well as in webmail and other social networking sites. You will only presence next to the names of people who’s full name exactly match the full name in Skype. We don’t do magic at Skype yet, so we will not be able to match if the name used in Facebook and in Skype are different. We hope you will find this feature useful.

I recently downloaded skype and on day 1 saw the little country icons and green phone icons on other websites. It got it wrong sometimes - eg) we have a US toll free provider with Canadian toll free #'s which it flagged as a US toll free # but that is not the end of the world.

Today is the end of the world - all phone #'s on all web pages are visable for a second and then disappear. Completely unacceptable as any users on my websites that have Skype will not be able to see the phone #. While I hope I can fix this on my computer by removing Skype I worry that visitors to my website will not be able to call subscribers who are listed there. That will ultimately hurt both mine and my subscribers businesses. This needs to be addressed.

Here's a simple development idea, lets have it so we can receive emails in our chosen language and not the country our IP resolves too.

Hi,

Not sure where to post this feature request, but trying the Developer blog (no Contact Form on site?).

We use Skype in our business. But status is not working as intended, because people forget to update their status (Skype just running in the background).

Tip would be to on every startup of Skype, have Skype show your status much the same as messages you get when someone gets online (should also show status of person logging on). Then its just to click the status message to change. When people change status this should also be communicated to all contacts (much the same as todays "Now online" messages).

May seem like a small feature, but I guess if you have been using the status feature in Skype, you also have the same problem (old status not being updated/forgotten).

Hope this helps.

Have a nice weekend! :)

Hello Peter,
This is nice feature... I love it. Thanks.

But suddently I have realized that the classic mystatus.skype.com is not showing my correct status on my blog... like in this blog your status icon appears beside your name, I show my status on my blog... it isn't working fine for a couple of days now. Any idea? my site url is codecurry.com

Best
Sam

Never mind my previous comment here! the status icon has started working just fine!

Why not to add date and time to status message when it's changed like in Facebook. Ex. "28-09-09, 22:00 - Taking shower. Be back soon."

Dear Peter,
May I ask if "Skype name recognition in Skype 4.1" is available for individual user, or ONLY for business users.

I am an Skype user, using subscription of "Unlimited world calling" every month. I like "Skype name recognition in Skype 4.1" feature very much and willing to use, please advice.

Thanks! Vijay

Skype is evil because Skype will permanently keep your Skype account no matter what. After the time-wasting hassle of sending e-mail concerns and sending e-mail complaints regarding account deactivation and account cancellation when I don't need these guys, Skype is evil - because once you sign up, their genetically-engineered artificial toxic will preserve their names and their personal data so they will never decompose and will never corrode as they will linger throughout the servers of soul-less minds. If anything like this, Skype will end up becoming like a landfill full of unused accounts, making it not efficient and not good for the server environment.

So before you sign up at Skype, you better think of a good reason about why they will keep their account names for no reason. Skype is evil.
