The future of Skype Extras

Skype has always focused on delivering products that delight our users. For many years, the Skype Developer Program has offered a wide range of tools that allow third-party developers to create hardware and software that work with Skype. Many innovative applications have been developed and distributed over the years and we feel fortunate to have worked with some of the best developers anywhere.

Despite the incredible breadth of Extras developed for Skype, simply not enough people were using them to justify our continued support of the Extras programme. Unfortunately, effective today, we will shut down the Skype Extras programme.

So what does this mean?

We will no longer certify new Extras. However, all existing Extras will stay certified until their expiration dates and all unused test tickets will be reimbursed.

We will continue to distribute applications through the existing Extras Manager in Skype for Windows, but will no longer add new Extras.

All public API documents will continue to be maintained.

Skype will continue to support accessories via the Public API.

The Skype shop will continue to feature currently listed Extras.

It was a tough decision, but we want to assure the community that we focus our time and resources on initiatives that delight our users and help our partners create innovative products for new markets. While the Extras program didn't work as well as we'd hoped, we still believe there are opportunities for third-party developers to enhance the Skype experience. We'll keep you posted.

Skype name recognition in Skype 4.1

Have you seen small presence icons while browsing the web lately? If so, then you have probably experienced the Skype name recognition feature in action. With that feature enabled you will be able to see if your friends are online on Skype even when you are not actively using Skype. For example you will see the Skype presence in Facebook as in this video:

We didn’t build this feature just for Facebook, though! You will see it on any web-page where people’s names appear. Of course it works well in Salesforce (another video) and other online CRM systems, as well as in webmail and other social networking sites. You will only presence next to the names of people who’s full name exactly match the full name in Skype. We don’t do magic at Skype yet, so we will not be able to match if the name used in Facebook and in Skype are different. We hope you will find this feature useful.

CTSS - Chat Translator and Speaker for Skype

CTSS ("Chat Translator and Speaker for Skype") translates Skype chat messages in 43 different languages in real-time.

Don't have Skype yet? Not a problem, while installing CTSS, CTSS will realize that you currently don't have Skype installed, and will open your default browser to the Skype download page so that you can quickly and easily download and install the latest Skype for Windows release. CTSS can even start Skype for you, if you start CTSS and Skype is not already started.

Why not send a link to this page to all your friends and they can quickly and easily now use Skype INSTANTLY just by installing CTSS? Maybe you can even all get together all at the same time by creating a Skype chat based in another language and practice learning new languages in a Skype Group chat? They will also be able to hear your chat messages and when you come online as well.

CTSS speaks your Skype chat messages in 10 different languages as well as a British accent. Call it, your Skype chat answering machine, with Caller Id for Skype chats.

CTSS also can speak your Skype contact status messages in 10 different languages as well as a British accent as well. Now you can here when your Skype contacts come online.

CTSS works with all Windows Skype releases currently supported and does not require the Extras Manager to run.

CTSS can be removed using your Add/Remove Programs from your Windows Control Panel at anytime.

Expand your Skype experience to a new global and worldwide level.

Hear contact status changes and Skype chat messages when you are busy and/or near your computer and decide when and if you wish to respond. Learn new languages at your own pace.

Make new friends, in far away places, and communicate with them INSTANTLY, not even knowing their language, using Skype and CTSS and the 43 different languages it supports.

Soon you will not only be able to chat with your new friends but also call them and speak with them as well, because CTSS can also teach you, how to speak new languages, as well as read and write them.

Jason Fischl joins Skype as Director of Developer Relations

Video: Skype’s US blogger Howard Wolinsky talks to Jason Fischl

Cross-posted from the main Skype blog.

I’m happy to report that Jason Fischl has recently joined Skype as Director of Developer Relations. Among other things, he’ll be heading up the Skype Developer Program.

Jason’s no newcomer to the world of VoIP. Before Skype, he was Chief Technology Officer at CounterPath, the leading developer of cross platform softphones for desktops and mobile convergence products for the likes of AT&T, BT and Verizon.

Personally, I’m thrilled about Jason joining. We have a great opportunity to revitalize our developer program and he has the skills and experience to lead this effort. He has an excellent track record working with industry standards bodies like the IETF in and is a thought leader in open source software development.

Last month, Skype made news when we offered our advanced SILK speech technology – which is incorporated into Skype 4.0 for Windows – to developers for free, and positioned it as a new standard for high quality audio.

Jason’s new role will allow Skype to do more in this direction, continuing to give third-party developers access to tools like SILK – and making Skype a platform for ground-breaking innovation.

Hello World! New face in our community

Some say Silence is the voice of complicity. I share the point that SDP as some of you knew has been a bit too quiet lately. But again, it does not mean at all we all left the Skype developer community or are working on projects that are not related to serve and support the developer community.

Actually we have improve and increase the team (I will let wolli commenting on that later I'm sure).

Many projects for developers are planned and on track to be delivered this year from our team (too early to share) but you know how much we like to share, so stay tune!

But for now, I thought I should thank someone most of you (Extra vendors) work with. Our dear Halina Mugame has decided to move on and actually to go and visit the other part of the Earth.

From Halina's words:

Mark Twain said: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

So I'm off to follow my dream and discover the world - living the backpacker life for a year or two. I'm starting with Oz - I'll land there at the end of next week

I want to thank you all for everything - being patient when I started or made some mistakes, supporting me to do my job better, discovering and creating new things - and the rest. You Thank you!

It's with incredibly heavy heart we will say goodbye to her but guess what! she found her perfect backfill with the recruitment of Kristi Pakler.

From Kristi's words:
I am fresh at Skype, joined just this week. So I try to keep up with Halinas good work and make DevZone better and better. Newsletter and Blog will also be my areas. It's all new and exciting for me and I look forward to work with you all

We are very happy to welcome Kristi in our team and she will be working with most of you and of course we wish all the best to Halina.

We will talk to you very soon again.

SILK, our super wideband audio codec, is now available for free

Guest writer: Jonathan Christensen, Skype's GM for Audio and Video

Today marks a significant moment in the journey of Skype. Some of you may be aware of the SILK speech codec which is included as part of Skype 4.0 for Windows - it's what enables super-wideband audio and optimizes call quality, even in low network bandwidth environments. It transforms sound quality for Skype calls, and if you haven't already tried 4.0, believe me: you should.

I'm speaking at eComm today, and have some very special news to bring our developer community - we're making the SILK speech codec available for a royalty free license by third-party software and hardware developers soon.

What does this mean for the future of audio on the web?

SILK is Skype's signature super wideband audio codec which achieves super wideband audio quality using 50% less network bandwidth than previously required. It is the outcome of a three year long development process in the Skype labs, which focused on four things:

improving audio bandwidth going from 8 kHz to 12 kHz, meaning that a SILK conversation sounds like you are in the same room as the person you are speaking with

providing real-time bandwidth scalability to deal with degraded network conditions

balancing codec optimization between voice, music and background noise, each of which can have an impact on the overall user experience

delivering a robust solution that delivers a more consistent audio experience, regardless of network conditions and an individual user's voice signature

Making SILK available opens the door to its adoption as the standard across a huge range of platforms, applications and devices by web developers and chip manufacturers, as well as consumer electronics and mobile device manufacturers. By offering it for free, we are removing one of the biggest hurdles to adoption of wideband audio: cost. By doing so, I hope we'll establish a new industry-wide standard in speech processing: clearer, richer, and warmer audio.
When can I get my hands on the code?

We are still working on the details but for more information about SILK, please visit our SILK website.

Not sure if most have noticed but the Skype FUP ("Fair Usage Policy") has been updated. More here:

There are some important additional daily limits for most subscriptions ,to be aware of, as you can see, with subscriptions along with the Monthly 10,000 Minute limitations with most Skype subscriptions, they are:

A maximum of 6 hours of subscription based calls per day.

No more than 50 different numbers in total can be called per day.

I quote from the FUP (" I love saying that ")

"Once these limits are exceeded Skype will charge normal rates and a connection fee for any additional minutes used. Subscriptions are for individual use only. Each subscription is to be used by one person only and is not to be shared with any other user (whether via a PBX, call centre, computer or any other means)."

This is why I created the SMFS "Subscription Monitor for Skype". Which will help you know when you are getting close to any of these limits so that if needed you can make sure you have some extra Skype credit in your account, if and when needed.

Ok, so what, so who needs/wants a subcription monitor anyways?

There are a few reasons why you would want a subscription monitor, here are some of the major reasons:

Your Skype call history stored on your Windows system ONLY reflects the calls you made on that individual Windows system.

Example: If you use Skype on more than one computer, in your home, at work, at friends homes, you can't get the total call history from those systems, if you have used more than one system during that day or that month.

If you use call transfer, you cannot get any information on the length of any transferred call, even from the system that transferred the call.

Of course you can go view your call history by logging on at the Skype web site and viewing your call history, but you had better have a pen and paper, and a good calculator, because:

Both daily and monthly subscription limits are based on GMT 0. Meaning, for example, If you live in Saint Paul, MN, where it is GMT -6 hours, with daylight savings time, the old day ends and the new day starts at 18:00 or 06:00PM.

The month of March for example for Skype Subscription limits started on February 28th at 18:00 or 06:00PM NOT March 1st at Midnight In Saint Paul MN.

Skype rounds minutes off to the next minute. So if your call lasts 30:12 seconds, then that call counts as 31 minutes, NOT 30 minutes. While this seems easy to understand, adding these rounded minutes up many times a day, when you have, hundreds or over a thousand calls a month manually, is no easy task.

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype", does NOT require a Skype client to be running. So, if you want to keep track of your minutes at work and at home, or at a friends house, you can run "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" even before starting Skype to check what your current minutes are.

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype" refreshes automatically, every 30 minutes. There also is a "Update Now" button that when pressed will update your Subscription limits at anytime as well.

Since "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" does not require a Skype client to run, you can monitor ANY Skype name at anytime, even if you are logged on as another Skype name, even if you use a Linux or a Mac normally, or any combination of different computers and/or computer platforms during the day or month, but have access to a Windows based system at the moment, you can view your current Skype subscription values in real-time for the day as well as the entire month and at anytime.

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype" allows you to save your Skype name and password, so that each time "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" is started it will automatically start getting Subscription information, for the last Skype name when it was used the last time it ran. "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" stores passwords locally on the computer in question, using safe and approved encryption methods.

This is an optional feature, and can be disabled, by clicking the "Config" button and unchecking the "Save" check box. If the "Save" check box is checked, "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" will remember your Skype name and password, and when started each time will begin to display the current values of your Subscription limits for the last Skype name entered.

You can change the Skype name and password at anytime to look at other Skype names Subscription limits without stopping "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" by simply clicking on the "Config" button and entering a new Skype name and password, and then pressing the "Validate" button.

You will then see the current subscription limit values for the new Skype name and password you entered and validated.

If you enter a Skype name that does not have a subscription, totals of zero will display for that Skype name, click the help link or help menu item ("By right-clicking on the SMFS icon") to learn about how to get a Skype subscription and other Skype services.

Of course if the Skype name you enter has not used any of your subscription minutes or calls for the new month, all totals will be zero as well.

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype" uses a video visplay icon, located in the System Tray, when all your limits are under roughly 89 percent usage, a video display icon with a green screen is displayed in the System Tray:

Daily Different Numbers Max 50 less than 45
Daily Call Minutes Max 360 Less than 324
Monthly Call Minutes Max 10,000 less than 9000

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype" uses a video display icon, located in the System Tray, when one of your limits are at roughly 90 percent usage and more, a video display icon with a yellow screen is displayed in the System Tray:

Daily Different Numbers Max 50 greater than 45
Daily Call Minutes Max 360 greater than 324
Monthly Call Minutes Max 10,000 greater than 9000

"The Subscription Monitor for Skype" uses a video display icon, located in the System Tray, when one of your limits are at roughly 95 percent usage and above, a video display icon with a red screen is displayed in the System Tray:

Daily Different Numbers Max 50 greater than 47
Daily Call Minutes Max 360 Less greater 342
Monthly Call Minutes Max 10,000 greater than 9500.

The local time that your Daily Limits are reset for your subscription.

If any limit violations have taken place anytime during the current month, they will be displayed in local date and time, and the subscription violation that took placed will be listed.

All subscription violations are listed from most recent to earliest violation this month.

If you see one violation displayed, click on the arrow to view any other violations, there maybe more than one violation, if you do not see the word "None" displayed in the violations box.

If there are no subscription violations this month, then none will be listed.

This was done for those who may have violated the subscription limits in the past and were NOT using SMFS, but are today, since SMFS shows current subscription values for today. They might not know without this feature why their subscription was suspended, since SMFS only shows todays totals and monthly totals.

By left clicking on the "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" you can see all the Subscription Limits as well as a video display icon for green, yellow and red much like the color for the Icon in the System tray, but the proper color for any item listed above. Since there maybe some limits at red, yellow and green at the same time.

By right clicking the "The Subscription Monitor for Skype" you can see a menu that allows you to go to the Skype forum, Display The SMFS window, get Help for SMFS, go to the SaveOnTelephoneBills.com web site, and close the menu as well. This same menu can be displayed by right-clicking on ANY blank area on the SMFS window as well.

The color of the icon shown in the Sytem Tray reflects the worse Skype subscription limit total, so if some subscription limit totals are at yellow and green, but one is red, then the icon located in the System Tray will be red. Each subscription limit also has a video display icon along side of the total that will reflect the green, yellow, red status of each susbscription total being monitored.

Here are pictures of SMFS - "The Subscription Monitor For Skype" on showing after the "Config" button being clicked so that another Skype name and password can be entered, and the other show the window after that information was entered and the verify button was pressed:

"The Subscription Monitor For Skype" can be unistalled at anytime by using the Windows Add/Remove Programs from your Windows Control Panel.

Currently, only default proxy support is in place, for those that use a proxy, but a future update will also support proxies with user credentials as well.

If you lose your connection or are not connected the icon in the System Tray will have a blue color, not green, yellow or red, you can at anytime click the "Update Now" button to force a re-connect or wait for the normal 30 minute time period where an attempt to connect will be tried again.
