SkypeOut dialing wizard
By
Jaanus on May 23, 2005 in Skype Beta and new releases.
We often get questions from new Skype customers who haven't been using international calling that much, and are now about to use SkypeOut that requires you to enter all phone numbers in an international format. A [dialing wizard](http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/dialing.html) is now available that shows you how to correctly dial with Skype, as well as the price that you'll be paying.

Using the Dialing Wizard is straightforward - you just punch in the number in your local format, select the country that the number is in, and the number is then displayed in proper international format used by Skype. You can dial the number directly from the Wizard by clicking the "Dial Number in Skype" button - no need to copypaste anything.
If you like to link to places, you can even link to the SkypeOut Dialing Wizard with all the fields pre-filled, like [this](http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/dialing.html?country=USA&number=203%20555-1234). Convenient for e-mails or web sites to let people know right away how much calling you with SkypeOut is gonna cost them.

"Dial number in Skype" button doesn't work on Mac.
There's some usability issue at share.skype.com, you should check them out (like dropdowns). Ask me for more details if necessary.

You should make a separate list with the user's previously called countries. There's a lot of countries you'll never call, and some you call often. This will make it easier and quicker to use. The countries can be stored in a cookie.
Nice blog.

Skype is too strict in not allowing anything but a space character after the country code. If I have a number already in a system, for example a web based CRM, written as +1 (234) 567-8901, and I automatically rewrite* it to be clickable as 'callto://+1 (234) 567-8901', it should work without any further editing, and the same with other harmless commonly used characters in phone numbers as "/".
*Why not rewrite the number itself? Because the extra characters have a specific meaning, separating the area code, for example, which I'd be loosing if I stripped them.

It is a very nice page, so please make the page in other language than English.
This will promote the SkypeOut call.

The ? at the end forces the pic to be loaded from the server instead from the local browser cache where an older status might still be stored.
The link works with or without ? though, more or less a matter of personal preferences
