reboot report
By
Malthe on June 12, 2005 in Skype around the world.
The Skype delegation is now safely back from its expedition into the Danish scene of "practional visionaries", know as a conference called reboot.
Reboot is in version 7, where version 6 was the only major upgrade silently skipped, due to the main organizer’s impending family expansion.
Being Danish myself, I’ve been to a couple of reboots in the past, and while nothing can match the dotcom heydays in terms of number of participants (we’re talking thousands back then), the subsequent reboots have only increased in value for the participants.
This year’s couple of hundred participants were subjected to a healthy dose of the big, international names along with similar numbers of homegrown, Danish speakers — one of whom was yours truly.
Some of the speakers
We saw and heard Cory Doctorow speak about his work in the EFF, where they’re fighting an admirable and important fight against Hollywood cluelessness and greed.
Jason Fried of 37signals gave us his view on how to make big things happen with small teams. It was right up Skype’s alley, and frankly, you should make sure it’s right up yours, too.
Skype blogbings grand not-so-ol’ man, Stuart Henshall, took the audience through a number of thoughts on some of his pet peeves: Presence and Skype strategy. Stuart knows his stuff, and the audience surely came away with an urge to get their organization up and running on Skype and enjoying the intrinsic values of presence.
A friend of Stuart’s, and now of Skype’s, Dina Mehta, told us about Social Tools for Research and Collaboration. She told us how she used GPRS and Skype while travelling through catastrophe-striken areas in India, sending reports back about where doctors, food and blankets were needed. She also used flickr to create galleries of missing persons. Truly humbling, and truly ingenious.
My talk about Skype’s brand
While I don’t belong in the esteemed company of the people mentioned above, Skype enthusiasts will perhaps like to know that I also gave a talk. Being no superstar, I was given the medium-sized of the three conference halls, but with “Skypewith ” in the title of my presentation ensured a full house.
I’m no seasoned public speaker and started out a bit nervously, but I think it got better further into the talk. If you’re into stuff like that, Stuart Henshall was kind (?) enough to record the talk (you can get a 14 Mb MP3, hosted by Skype), and you can help yourself to a 350 Kb PDF of the presentation, but it’s not terribly informative since I delivered all the content orally, and only had headlines on the slides.
As always, reboot was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and it only made it better that I got to show Copenhagen to two colleagues, Priidu, who does UI design and Kristjan, who’s one of our brilliant interaction designers.
Did you go to reboot yourself, or did something in one of the speeches make you want to scream? Log in below with your Skype Name and password, and let it rip!

For what it's worth, your nervousness didn't show, and you delivered a very nice presentation. Thumbs up from me.

I really enjoyed your presentation, because it wasn't just another "let me tell you what you know already" presentation, but had new elements. And you did not seem nervous at all!
Besides, as I can proudly tell, the pre conference podcast preparation have been made completly with Skypeproducts - Skype, Skypeout and VM

New firmware is released. more powerful now.
If you have our AU-600, you can use your current cell phone to receive and place skype calls for free.
You can assign a speed-dial number for every skype ID, then you can use the speed-dial # to make skype call by cell phone. for example, if you assign "11" to skype ID "John", then you can make skype call by dialing "*11" via your cell phone.
And if someone is using our AU-600, you can divert your skype calls to any phone number by his/her AU-600.
For example: If John is using our AU-600, and you know John can be reached at 1-555-555-5555 at this monment and John does not configure his AU-600 to divert his skype calls to that phone number, but you can use John's AU-600(John does not need do anything) to forward your call, It means your skype call can be forwarded to 1-555-555-5555. of course, You have to know John's password(AU-600). I just installed one of these adapters from EchoStore. Seems to work well, although I'm working through a couple of problems that may or may not be due to the adapter.
I installed the AU-600 with an expandable phone system, so all the satellite cordless handsets work off the adapter. As advertised, they make and receive both Skype and PSTN (regular phone network) calls. Fairly simple to use. But, beware, the installation disk doesn't actually come with installation software. You have to download it from EchoStore (and you have to know to do that, since nothing in the documentation tells you). Sound quality is very good.
Two problems I've had so far: 1) on a forwarded call (incoming Skype to cell phone), the adapter did not release the phone line after the cell phone hung up; and 2) I got annoying network lost tones when trying to leave a message on Skype voicemail. But, as said earlier, these problems may not be the adapter's fault.
One nice thing about the adapter is that it doesn't take over your sound card, so computer audio output still goes through your speakers. One thing I don't like about USP head or handsets is they cut out your speakers.
Recommended: Yes

If there is no voice trasfered to AU-600 for one minute, AU-600 will hang up skype.
In our lab ,when phone 1 call phone 2 through pstn and terminate the talk. phone 2 will get a busy tone(last for 40 seconds), and then there will be no voice transfer to phone 2. So if phone1 calls phone2 and phone 2 transfer the call to phone 3 through skype, and phone 3 transfer the call to phone4. that means in the case:
phone1--> phone2-->skype1--> skype2--> phone3-->phone4;
if phone1 and phone4 hang up, phone2 and phone 3 will get 40 seconds busy tone and then slience,so after about 1minute 40 seconds phone 2 or phone 3 will hang up. If they don't hang up,there must be some voice transfered to phone2 or phone3
and we will reduce the hung up in the following version firmware.

Any plans to make this compatible with the Mac?

Sorry, we do not have the schedule for the MAC.

The whole idea looks great but will it work only with "regular" Skype calls originated from COMPUTERS or will it also work with SKYPE IN calls?
For instance: If someone calls me from a regular phone in my SKYPE IN number in the USA and I'm in...Brazil with my cell phone (which works fine there) will the call be forwarded to my cell phone? Will I be able to answer a Skype In call in my cell phone wherever I may be?
If the answer is YES I would like to order one rightaway!

Yes, It does work with SKYPEIN calls. and this adaptor can record your chat messages now.
Below is how this adaptor diverts the skype calls:
skype call comes---> skype call is diverted to home phone(we suppose you connect your home phone to the adaptor), then skype call is in the local telephone network(PSTN)
---> your home phone dials your cell phone(your cell phone's LCD will display your home phone's number), in fact, due to skype calls are in your local telephone system, so skype calls can reach any phone number as long as your home phone can reach.
Assuming L1 is your Verizon telephone number, the one "on the wall", L2 is the standalone telephone attached to the adaptor, and L3 is your cell number. Assuming that using the adaptor, you forward the calls to L3 after 5 rings.
a. if you receive a call on L1, L1 will ring b. if you receive a Skype call, L2 will ring, and after 5 rings, L3 will ring
if someone is using our AU-600, you can divert your skype calls to any phone number by his/her AU-600. For example: If John is using our AU-600, and you know John can be reached at 1-555-555-5555 at this monment and John does not configure his AU-600 to divert his skype to that phone number, then you can use John's AU-600(John does not need do anything) to forward your call, then your skype call can be forwarded to 1-555-555-5555. of course, You have to know John's password(AU-600).
If both sides are using this adaptor: For example, I am in the US and have this adapter. My friend in UK also has this adapter. If I set up the forwarding for both adapters, I can call from my cell phone to my friend's cell phone in UK. What I am thinking is: 1. I use my cell phone to call to make skype call from US. 2. My adapter will forward my call to Skype and connect to the my friend Skype in UK. 3. In UK, the adapter will forward the Skype to my friend's cell phone.
==> I can make a phone call from my cell phone to my friend's cell phone. The cost is: local cost from my cell phone to my landline + the local cost from my friend landline to his cell phone.

I have had problems with the call forwarding function(Phone line to Voip). I am able to call my system from a cell from phone, enter my pin number, dial a skypeout number and place a call. But when I try the same thing and enter a skypeout speed dial assigned number followed by "*" (without the quotes), the device will only dial the two assigned numbers and hang. I already installed the latest driver from Echostore. Any help?

this problem has been solved already.

I have used actiontec and 1 big issue i have is when i pick my phone up I hit ## then the speed dial
EX: Open Line
##
01
and it dials the number assigned to 01.
I want to be able to hit ## and then dial a number 001*****
Does your product allow someone to do this or do they need to use the speed dial?
Thanks alot for your help I look foward to purchasing your product.

Hi, I like the product and I want to use it. However, the most important feature I am looking for is to use the call forward facility through the PSTN line. Assuming that I set up this adapter in country1 for user skype1 and I am physically located in UK.
Is it possible: if skype1 is not available, for me to change the adapter's auto forward number in country1 through skype or some other interface?
Use case: I want to call local numbers in country1 without manual intervention. So, I shall be able to automatically control the autoforward number from here (UK).
Please let me know if there is anyway to do this.
Thanks.

I purchased this product but have been unable to receive support as of yet.
Using the latest drivers off of the website, and all recomendations made by the manual, the device driver locks up windows (2K or XP) after around 24 hours of being on. As the device needs to be on 24-7 to forward all my calls, this becomes a major issue.
Further, the software that appears in the desk tray has a massive memory leak, after 12 hours of being active, the application occupies 400+MB of RAM.
I have further tested the product on another system of similar configuration with the same issues, but as stated before, have not been able to reach any support.
Any help would be appreciated.
