Happy 1st birthday SkypeOut! The present: lower prices.
By
Jaanus on July 27, 2005 in Life at Skype.
It’s the first birthday of SkypeOut today. As the news from a year ago said:
July 27, 2004. Today Skype launched its free, Skype for Windows Version 1.0 software, which includes SkypeOut, enabling Skype users to pre-pay and call any phone number in the world at highly competitive local rates.
It’s been an eventful year and SkypeOut has served us and you well. Happy birthday, SkypeOut! And to celebrate, we got some goodies for you. We’re lowering prices to many destinations. We have to increase some a bit, too, but those don’t kick in until September 1. (Lower prices are effective immediately.)
For more info, see the press release, service announcement with price change details and SkypeOut rates page.
A cool piece of info from the press release:
“SkypeOut’s popularity encouraged us to extend the reach of our global rate by more than 1 billion people in key markets including China, Hong Kong and Poland,” said Niklas Zennström, Skype CEO and Co-founder. “With 28 countries now covered by our SkypeOut Global Rate, nearly 2.2 billion people, approximately 1/3 of the world’s population, can now be reached on their landlines and mobiles for 1.7 Euro cents a minute.” (Population information sourced by United States’ World Factbook.)

Congratulations for the birthday and it has been a good idea to lower the prices as a present. But I have a question:
Why only to certain countries and not all of them?, is there any reason related to the cost?
Thanks.

I think that they can lower the prices in those countries which have more Skype (SkypeOut?) users, but those who have less - have to suffer..
And it probably depends on the carriers too - how low are their prices.

We're lowering prices as we get better prices from our termination providers.
Sometimes this depends on our volumes - the more the better, and of course we get more as we grow; it sometimes depends on the local situation, where regulators are forcing lower prices on the old telcos that connect to our friends on the old telephone network and sometimes simply because the termination provider simply wants to do business with Skype.
These deals are done one country at a time, so we don't get price reductions everywhere at once.
I'm sure that with our world-class buying team (! I had to say that !) we'll be getting more deals, and as the regulators in Europe attack the mobile operators prices during this year, we'll be able to do something here as well.

Congratulations .... Congratulations ....
Congratulations for Skype and the whole community of users, developers and...
One year .... how many calls are mad in that year?
Yeahhh, its good news for those who, still, need to use the old fashioned telephone at the other end for reaching there friends.
Thanks Skype-team for making this possible.

I like Skype very much. I transferred 10 €uro to get Skype Out. But I can not contact any mobiles. I wrote THREE eMails to Skype, but they did not answer them.
I like Skype, how I said, BUT I HATE IT IF MY EMAILS ARE NOT ANSWERED!!!
Where are my 10 euro. How long will it take until I am able to contact cellphones?
Mail back to dennisekinci@t-online.de
Thank you very much

Our first pleasant use of Skype was during Paraolympics in Athens last year. We were able to have daily SkypeOut talks with Daughter who was one of the US trainers. She would take our early AM calls with her Cell as we were retiring for night. At was good for her to hear voices from home.
Thanks Skype!
