Japanese retail takeover

By My status Jaanus on August 1, 2005 in Skype around the world.

Skype is taking over the Japanese retail world. Wherever you step in, you see counters like this.

Image

They're run by a company called [Novac](http://www.novac.co.jp/skype/) who is very enthusiastic about Skype, and we're equally happy to see them do all this in Japan. Reportedly they're doing very well. Novac is just an example of bigger things and business enabling that Skype has apparently set in motion.

Image

So don't be surprised if you're strolling the streets in Tokyo or elsewhere and are approached by nice young ladies in Skype attire and offered to learn more about the wonders of the whole world talking for free. (Some of the gentlemen on the pictures are from Skype, either on their Japanese tour or stationed there permanently.)

I am American, living in Japan. I have been using Skype since I got here, only about a month ago, and it is great. Although, I am concerned if the servers here are going to get bogged down with so many customers. Is Skype going to make sure there are enough server power to handle all the extra Skpye customers?

Our company has been using SKIPE for almost a month now. It is good regarding the prices.Landline destinations are ok, but there are recurrent audio problems when you are calling cells. Dont know what is the reason, but it is rather annoying, because every next time you need to call a cell, you have to switch to usual phone operator. So, the company is forced to keep both skipe and regular phone operator service running without completely switching to either one.

i want to know that when will be available the skypein in japan?

arielvil | Tuesday, Aug 2

@shaker1273

skype is P2P based - there is no server needed
Peer 2 peer means - YOUR PC connects directly to the RECIVER PC. If it's a conference call - one PC plays the host.

So - no - servers will not going 2 b bogged... ;-)

hello everybody !!.. right now i am in Korea, i have been using skype since i got here to. I am in the NAVY, and thanks to skype i can talk more often with my family back in the US & Mexico, a lot cheap than buying phone cards, those are expensive and roundout of minutes really quick with conexion charge.... i what i am trying to said is Thanks Skype !

hi, arielvil.
I'm a Skyper in Japan. SkypeIn will not be available in Japan because of the Japanese Tele-communication Policy. It does not allow VoIP services that uses the Internet as its network to provide phone numbers. It requires a guaranteed quality network.
But there is a good news. One of the carrier in Japan called "Fusion Communications" has announced that its service will colaborate with Skype, virtually providing a Japanese phone number for Skype users. You might want to get more information by searching on Google with these keywords: "fusion communications skype"

OK, that's all cool, but can this, or any other company in Japan, accept my payment for SkypeOut? I mean, without using a credit card and without paying weird rates for overseas bank transfer? Is there a place in Japan where I can buy SkypeOut credits for cash by bank transfer?
Skype had an "offline bank payment" option for Japan in May 2005, but I don't see it at payment page anymore.
Anybody can give an advice?

xataxama | Wednesday, Aug 24

As for paying cash...I had seen the same option for paying cash at a Japanese bank or Cash transfer to the japanese bank from other banks' ATMs. This seems to have been removed, however, since Livedoor (Japanese PC giant) has rebranded Skype here. It is known as Livedoor Skype, and the pre-paid cards are available from its website. So, I bought one of the cards myself. Having paid ¥2000 for the card, I expected that to be the amount credited to my account. However, I was only credited 10 euros (roughly half)! I guess it is a pretty tidy setup they have going now. To save, customers will HAVE to buy Skypeout credit from skype.com, or pay more than twice the going rate here in Japan. It drives me nuts!

I use Skype to talk to my girlfriend in Japan however there seem to be a lot of problems with her not seeing me even if I am online and visversa, now she is unable to log on and has paid a lot of money for SkypeIn, I think Skype have to do a lot of work in Japan as people are paying for a technology which is so far behind the Western it is almost laughable.
