Skype opens IM and Presence to the world. Introducing SkypeWeb and SkypeNet

By My status Lenn Pryor on August 24, 2005 in Skype Beta and new releases.

As part of celebrating our second year anniversary, Skype has a present to give back to the internet for all of the amazing support we have received from the internet community. We are announcing two new initiatives that make Skype and the Web a little more interesting and open up new possibilities for the developer and partner community. After all … sharing is good :)

Introducing SkypeWeb

We’ve heard from you that Skype doesn’t just let you talk for free over the internet, but has become an integral part of managing communication with your family, friends, and colleagues. Letting people know when you are available to talk via Skype makes the tool smarter unlike the telephone which just rings even when you are busy. SkypeWeb will enable you to let others know when you are free and make it easy for them to reach you from any Web site, blog, email, or just about anything that can speak HTML. SkypeWeb extends Skype beyond your contact list and lets people connect with you via Skype even if they are not a Skype user.

How will it work? Simple actually, just tell Skype that you want to share your online status with the Web, copy and paste a few lines of HTML and script that Skype will give you and voila … your Skype status is on the Web. Look for more announcements in the coming weeks from partners who will make sharing your Skype status on the Web quick and easy.

Interested in working with us to make it easy for Skypers to share their status on the Web? Drop us a line at skypeweb@skype.com.

Introducing SkypeNet API

Wouldn’t it be cool if your friends using other IM applications could contact you on Skype? We want Skype to be the worlds largest open IM system on the planet! What if you could use Skype to communicate with a product reviewer on a Web site, to chat with other players in an online game using Skype? All of these things and a few more that we haven’t dreamed up yet will become possiblities with SkypeNet API, a new set of tools and services that programmers can use to take Skype into new places that you may have never dreamed of before.

SkypeNet API will enable developers to access our IM and Presence system and bring it into new applications without needing to have the full version of Skype running on the machine. Think of it as mini Skype that can bring Skype to new places and let you do things you couldn’t do before. Details on the SkypeNet API will be coming soon, but we want to start the fun now. Interested in getting on board with SkypeNet now and just can’t wait until we publish more?

This is very very exciting. Congratulations Skypers, you seem to be on the right track. Even more, you managed to announce this the same day that Google enetered into this market space. Skype is just about to demonstrate how far ahead everybody else they are with their technology AND their way of thinking about things.

Well done guys, keep up that good work.

Cheers
Jurgen

The e-mailadress for skypeweb should be @skype.com, not @skype.net, as the latter bounces.

Interoperability: how about Google talk and SIP phones? Or is this just an illusion?

lodevermeiren | Wednesday, Aug 24

On worldofguilds.com we're looking forward to any web-enhancements that can improve our online game communication. Skype is already one of the preferred clients for ingame chatting.

Sorry about the incorrect email, it's been fixed now.

teller | Wednesday, Aug 24

Nope, it's still wrong :D
Last e-mail link says skypenet@skype.com but link is to skypeweb@skype.com

Another one I just discovered... www.openwengo.com.

* Free pc-to-pc: Check (of course)
* Pc-to-phone: Check (They offer metered plans, and also flat fee-plans to a country of your choice (some European countries only at the moment)).
* Video: Coming soon
* Win: Check
* Linux: Check
* Mac: Check
* PocketPC: coming soon
* Open standards: Check (SIP)
* Open Source: Check (!!!)

* Phone-to-pc: Dunno, couldn't find it
* Codec: don't know

What do you guys think of this? Sound pretty sweet to me!

lodevermeiren | Wednesday, Aug 24

Hi guys, great work. I just posted this up at downloadsquad.com

Also, which is the right email now???

superpixelboy | Wednesday, Aug 24

Will SkypeWeb be a feature avaialbe online or just included in the Windows version, leaving Mac and Linux users behind?

moldarin | Thursday, Aug 25

Good work guys!
SkypeWeb sounds like a good idea, especially for people not signed up to Skype. Now, you can get entire communities to sign up and network using Skype. I bet many telecom operators are feeling the earth shaking under their feet. ;)

What about Skype under SIP protocool??? when it will be?
it will be great to implement Skype into gateways and voip routers (for use Skype with normal analog phone). For me it can be just SIP enabled serwer(s) only for use with hardware stuff as gateways etc.

2lodevermeiren: the only bad thing about openwengo is that it's impossible to compile it (at least last time I tried) :P

Good to hear this news, the world should be various ....

Hi,

I wonder if it will be possible for 3rd party applications to do voice peer-to-peer communication based on the new Skype API without the "nerdy" skype UI poping up and ruining the user experience?!!?! I don't see that mentioned anywhere; only text chat is mentioned.

Keep up the great you guys at skype are doing in order to make this wonderful baby of yours even better and more serviceable to the community.

Cheers,
Roland.

Just heard Ebay has blocked the release of the SkypeNET API to the community. They want to be the only ones tapping into the rich potential of 3rd party tools and services built around skype. If this is true, then maybe developers should stop waiting for godot and start looking at alternatives. I, however, hope this is not the case.

Greets & Power to the people,
Roland.
