"2.0 is here"
By
Jaanus on December 2, 2005 in Sharing tools news.
Here's a picture for your Skype client to celebrate. Set it as your picture and let others know. Also note that Skype 2.0 now supports the PNG image format. Previously, only BMP and JPG were supported, and they continue to be.

Great, how about a release for linux?
kd5pbo | Friday, Dec 2
I have just downloaded and used Skype 2 for voice only. I HATE the new ring tones!!!!!!!! I HATE them. Bring back the old ones, please!
sclptrjoel | Friday, Dec 2
video skype for mac?
thefrigg | Friday, Dec 2
I liked the new skype 2.0 beta. The video is very good, but not as good as on Yahoo or Spontania.
The new ring tones are really bad. I rather the old ones.
gustavm79 | Friday, Dec 2
My own video is so small that I can't even see myself. Fix it, please!
gustavm79 | Friday, Dec 2
cool!!! good job! except the rings and that the Video-chat doesn't work with Win ME!!!!!!!!!!
It would be great if you have too!!! Don't forget the users with an older Win Version!!!
Thanks
timoalbus | Friday, Dec 2
I tested Skype 2 with few FireWire webCams. One is iSight which works on XP but doesn't with Skype2. Second one is regular Sony camcorder used as a web cam. I've got a feeling that IEEE 1349 web cams are not supported by Skype 2.0 I hope it is only in beta realease
proxus.com | Friday, Dec 2
Please release Skype 2.0 VIDEO option for Macintosh OS X AND LINUX
victor_rosillo | Friday, Dec 2
Please make Skype 2.0 for Linux
piemonteisinthewind | Friday, Dec 2
Proxus, I entered the FireWire webcam issue to Skype's bugtracker. So it's on our radar and hopefully fixed by 2.0 final.
dreamdrummer | Friday, Dec 2
Nice! but... and Linux?
I don't like be always the last. Why?
You already have skype 1.4 for Windows... now 2.0 beta... and people who work with linux are still working with Skype 1.2... why this delay?
Allways is the same...
alfonsnic | Friday, Dec 2
I hate the new sounds as well. Do you wanna make us to buy the old stuff now in the store, or what's going on. And there is the wav filter but when open a wav sound, skype say's that it does not work. YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME, I WANNA MY HOMER BACK. WOOHOO
tomylee | Friday, Dec 2
thanks !!!! ))) the best !! video and sound work ! - thanks !!!
nezex1 | Friday, Dec 2
I am using an older machine for my basic web needs and when I tried to use Skype 2.0 beta I determined that the "Test Camera" button acts as a "Reboot My Computer Now" button. I am using Windows XP Home and have all of the latest drivers.
I guess I will try again when the next beta release comes out.
ex_patrick_abram | Friday, Dec 2
I tested version 2.0 with my iSight camera! It worked prefect! I only had to reduce the brightness. The mic did not work. I'm using windows media edition. Now I only wait for the Mac version!!!!!
patrikw2 | Friday, Dec 2
First the obvious: The new ringtones are really bad!
Next, have you seen how elegant the Gizmo Project skin is? I love and live by Skype, but ever since Ebay bought you I feel that you have lost your edge. Watch out... there is competition out there and they are gaining on you...
And finally, you guys better respond quickly or your faithful Skype users will likely switch to your competitors who seem to be much more creative and responsive at the moment.
podmego | Friday, Dec 2
Any schedule for Mac version with video support?
tariel_gogoberidze | Friday, Dec 2
2.0 (beta) Works just fine. No probs whatsoever.I'm using a cheap digital cam which has web function. Great job Skype team!
rocker_44 | Friday, Dec 2
I really like the look and feel of 2.0. It seems like everything is exactly where I expect it to be now.
I'm a little disapointed that the grouping doesn't resemble what ICQ's grouping technology looks like, but it's better than no grouping at all
barkerjr | Saturday, Dec 3
i hate the new ringtones.....can't hear them ring from another room....jeeeez
g550guy | Saturday, Dec 3
please get video for MAC version soon!
http://www.lonelycanuck.com
desicanuk | Saturday, Dec 3
Great job! The video quality sometimes become little bad but... the speed is amazing it's extremely more fast then other program like msn!
I'm now on windows.. and i'm hoping with all my hearth that skype will do the same also on linux... that would be an another guinnes for skype! Think about it pls
go on skype u are the best!
ohmmiunque | Saturday, Dec 3
My first impression of Skype 2.0 is that I cannot stand it. 1) When I use the search bar at the bottom it no longer recommends three results to me. This used to be such a great way to quickly navigate to the person that I wanted to call 2) I have one huge list of contacts and I have no idea how to group them. Your interface used to be intuitive. What happened? Why can I not find the option to group my contacts? 3) Why did you change the sound of MY phone?
mikeymike | Saturday, Dec 3
An idea for Skype to turn video calls into a revenue stream...
Offer celebrity video voice mail! It'd be cool to have Pamela Anderson answer (in video) my voice mail when I'm not at the computer. Skype could recruit celebrities of all stripes: actors, porn stars, athletes, politicians, open-source gurus (Stallman, Torvalds, etc.).
The service could be launched to coincide with the Olympics this February; an Olympic athlete from your country of choice could answer your video voice mail.
mwlcarter | Saturday, Dec 3
I hate the ringtones too - very childish.
When I boot up Skype 2 I need to see the webcam window even when not in a call - Spontania was better.
Can I uninstall V2.0 and get back to V 1.4 etc?
I'd rather use Spontania for video - the quality is better.
douglathom1234 | Saturday, Dec 3
I hate the ringtones too! Ringtones?? Sounds like the computer is sick.
Also would be nice to have a way to sort the contacts the way I want. I want all my SkypeOut contacts out of sight until I need them.
As for the video, I haven't been able to get that to work yet - it just disappeared right off the menu bar - never to return!
chaos_2x | Saturday, Dec 3
Good job with the video, it's really good.
But please change the ringtones ! They are so bad !
Add the old ones they were classical but good.
jandry_ema | Saturday, Dec 3
The new ring tones are AWFUL! Please make the previous ring tones available.
tokyodanny | Saturday, Dec 3
video quality excellent for a first release
ringtones horrible, bring back the old ones, or at least make them available as an option
skypeout contacts, please bring back the old way of viewing them....just because they are right there doesn't mean that I'm going to use my skypeout anymore than I currently do (but I'm sure you already, incorrectly, thought about that)
nik.burns | Saturday, Dec 3
Version 2.0 ok, but no good for touch-1 phone (which works beautifully with Version 1.4.
Paulo
pcedodd | Saturday, Dec 3
Please release Skype 2.0 VIDEO for MAC OS X!
pronetivago | Saturday, Dec 3
The new ringtones are just *horrible*. Please let's have the old ones back. Sounds as if you're trying to make them so foul that people will be intimidated into buying ringtones from the shop.
And the contact grouping/search bar! What happened?
Adding video is great and long-awaited, but why, ffs, mess with other parts of the system that *weren't broken*?
robnaylorwtw | Saturday, Dec 3
mmmh, I'm another GNU/Linux user...
And I'm waiting... waiting... waiting... ... .........
PLEASE release at least an Linux version without bugs and with ALSA !
(and with video if possible because we will be badgered by Microsoft® customers like "what ? you don't have video ?")
ptitgnu | Saturday, Dec 3
I am a little dissapointed with the troubleshooter for this program. I just got Skype and it just flat out isnt working. I tried looking through the help menu and troubleshooter but nothing helps. My test call didnt even work. My dad also just got Skype and we can search and find eachother, but chatting and using video doesnt work, we arent even able to make a connection. anyone have ideas? thanks
adamaze | Saturday, Dec 3
I would say this is great move, video calling really works well and better than few other IMs. Connected ZECA cam and straight works. Grouping is ok, not that great.
Quite a bit for a beta, hope the final release will be what it should be
Thanks
anwarak | Saturday, Dec 3
I've got a regular Sony camcorder used as a web cam with XP. I've got a feeling that IEEE 1349 web cams are not supported by Skype 2.0. I hope it is only in beta realease!
dzotti | Saturday, Dec 3
Come on... Why always leaving Mac users lagging behing??? Couldn't you just release the video feature for Mac as well???
francisaugusto | Saturday, Dec 3
Do something about those ringtones. Please bring back the old ones.
orlowske1585 | Saturday, Dec 3
I hate the ringtones so much that I will probably go back to 1.4 and use Yahoo IM to transmitt the images at the same time, as I am doing at present.
scott_litton | Saturday, Dec 3
Great release but the old fashion ringtone on precedent version was so nice and very popular.
stefaniajohn | Saturday, Dec 3
C'mon, I'm a Mac (iBook 12'' Tiger) & Linux (Debian Sarge PC) user.
Each time I see those kind of situations I feel really frustrated and I begin to wonder if Microsoft has really won the OS'es war.
GPL is fantastic, 2.6.14 is wonderful, Tiger is beautiful, hey man, you can tweak the code here and there, you can compile whatever you want with gcc 4.0 to match your needs and whatever you want...
...yes but I can't AV with my friends. Again, really frustrating.
I don't want to be in the last wagon everytime for years to come.
Buying a PC-Windows next time.
blue_eclipse | Saturday, Dec 3
The new Skype ringtones really are bad! Please bring back the old ones!
rasko5 | Saturday, Dec 3
Both Video and Audio is much better than expected .
Yes, the Ring tones in this new version is horrible and we all Skype users are waiting for a change back.
Is Video Conference also possible? I tried but did not succeed
ratnayake | Saturday, Dec 3
Hi!
Only with Skype sounds is problem !
New Skype 2 is the best !!! New aspect is great.. I'm conten with Skype 2.. Great job
bazter | Saturday, Dec 3
I tried my ISight on win XP pro, however it works in XP it doesn't work in Skype.
Please make firewire cameras compatible with Skype video...
Definitely waiting for the mac version...
tomcoya | Saturday, Dec 3
I love the new look and functionality, but I totally would like to choose to go BACK to the old ring tones. Seriously!
revtim.com | Saturday, Dec 3
So great to finally have video in Skype. Its extremely frustrating (useless) that the video of my self is so small. It should be in its own window. As far as I can see video is not available in conference calls? And - then - the ringtones - but who cares if the video works
brille_b | Sunday, Dec 4
Il video e' accettabile anche se non al livello di Spontania. I suoni sono ORRENDI. Dateci la possibilita' di mettere i vecchi suoni...
videoazzurro | Sunday, Dec 4
What I loved about SKYPE was the fact that new features for Windows, Mac, and Linux were developed ALMOST at the same time. Since ebay bought it, the usual corporate Windows-centric approach seems to have taken over, and now we have a version 1.4 for mac and version 2.0 for Windows!!! Not good...
alexinwonderland | Sunday, Dec 4
The new tones suck, so I upgraded back to latest 1.x of Skype to ge the "old" ones back.
The video feature would have been nice, but forcing people to downgrade to WinXP just to use it is insane. My USB webcam works in Win98SE with any software I chose (ditto Linux), and I can run a Firewire webcam in Win98SE too, so why no webcam for Skype in Win98SE? Even M$ says there's a huge chunk of people who still use that OS.
And I too vote for having an up-to-date version of Skype for Linux, and for the sound to stop stuttering every few seconds as the file system does it's thing, it's SO annoying.
dariuszski | Sunday, Dec 4
I need an 'always on top'-option. When I'm checking a website, I still wand to see my communication-partner.
gruemme | Sunday, Dec 4
The new ringtones are awful... honestly. PLEASE add the original tones again. Other than that, the new skype version is awesome.
cheers,
flo
quickietwo | Sunday, Dec 4
Two comments:
Another vote/plea for a Linux version (it's all I ever use, at home and work, but my bro the other side of world is stuck with Windows; it would be nice to have sound and vision in a single program, instead of getting sound via Skype and vision via MSN).
To gruemme: if you were using Linux, then you'd find that any window can be set to be "on top" - it is not necessary for an application to have to support it. One of the many reasons I prefer Linux. (Sorry - I know this one is a wee bit off topic.)
Steve
stevenking66 | Sunday, Dec 4
My problem with Skype 2.0 is that my contact list is not sorted like it used to be; it used to be that my online contacts were first in the list, followed by offline contacts, then SkypeOut contacts... and as far as I know there is no mechanism in Skype 2.0 to change this.
hamadalwazzan | Sunday, Dec 4
video is awesome but the old skype no frills feel isnt there anymore..i just dont like this MSN-AOLized version of skype...what the hell is WeeMees? why does my ringtone sound like my laptop is under water? why is there a space for a silly comment next to the name??? why dont i see a decent sorted contact list???
another thing, if you wanna market to 13-year olds (i.e. WeeMees), i think it would be a great idea to introduce a new version of Skype for business users with no frills/no BS/simple interface
skype = the best
gor_ter | Sunday, Dec 4
This new video option is great, but there is always space for improvements of video quality, I also better like old ringtones. You could also add some kind of a meter that will messure the Mbites spent per call, for DSL users.
tadej-ivo-croatia | Sunday, Dec 4
I've just installed Skype 2 beta. Every since doing this none of my USB web cams work. I use some other software to capture AVI files via my web cam and they now report that the capture device is not installed correctly and capture device has driver problems. So uninstalled Skype 2 beta thinking this problem would be resolved. I thought wrong. I can't use my USB webcams anymore at all
Any application using Microsoft VFW fails and not all the applications I use support WDM so things are basically quite screwed up. Ah, but such is the joy of BETA software, so I'm not holding and grudges against Skype coders. However, if anyone has any suggestions about how I can restore my webcam functionality I'd really appreciate it. I'm on XP2 SP2.
kaustav | Sunday, Dec 4
I have installed Skype V2 beta. I find the interface very nice and the video option good. I do not like the new ring tones and I hope they will be changed back. I look forward to the improved version.
Cheers

j_alex_reid | Monday, Dec 5
hey the new skype version works great but what the hell is with the new ringtones? It sounds like Im in a fish tank or something.
bigdaddymatty17 | Monday, Dec 5
How about Bluetooth, is 2.0 going to support bluetooth headset natively?
pcfishhk | Monday, Dec 5
(1) Sounds are worse. (2) When intalled, the 2.0 beta removed all of my own picures that were previously sitting in My Skype Picture folder. (3) Japanese translation is bad (nothing improved).
yappion | Monday, Dec 5
...no linux, no mac OS support :-/ damn.
btw, until no multi-video-conferencing is available festoon is a better choice for 1.4@MSWin.
Keep up the good work still!
lordbbk | Monday, Dec 5
blurp blurp blurp
I hate the new sounds as well.
I downloaded a 'classic' ringtone from another source but Skype wouldn't accept it!
Please change or at least give some choices.
wazzaperth | Monday, Dec 5
Where is the Mac version 2.0??
jorgeweiss | Monday, Dec 5
And how adout Mac user?
Happy day, for Windos user.
happosade | Monday, Dec 5
OK it is said often, but I also want to say that the new ringtones are BAD, indeed childisch. Sorry guys but they realy SUCK.
2.0? WOW nice, video is cool and works fine. And looks to work faster. For that great jobs.
again, please remove the sounds in de final, PLAESE!!!!
J.
jgeertsma | Monday, Dec 5
I tried het new skype , and I must I love it. I don't HATE the new sounds, don't mind change once in a while. Can you set up a conference call with video?
SKype crashes sometimes, not very often...
philz03 | Monday, Dec 5
HATE HATE the new ringtones on skype 2.0, give me the OLD back and for now I have deleted the 2.0 from my pc and gone back to the .84. The 2.0 BETA disconnected all the time, which was very unsatisfying. Have loved and used skype from day one and will keep on using skype, but make the 2.0 BETTER and more reliable!!
That was my 2 cents worth of oppinions!!
mona1963 | Monday, Dec 5
Since ages, is there a problem with the status of the contacts. Sometimes I have contacts in my skype, which are already offline since 1 hour. PLEEEEEASE DO SOMETHING AGAINST THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tomylee | Monday, Dec 5
The new ringtones are awful, I can't hear them from the other room. The video was surprisingly clear, much better than Netmeeting. And it worked the first time! I'd like to see a side-by-side (same size) view of me and the far end, the postage stamp is too small. A bandwidth meter somewhere would also be useful, something that shows me how much bandwidth is being taken up (or rather how much is actually getting through).
mgrant0 | Monday, Dec 5
Thank you for finally adding webcam capability.
Just one favor to ask. Can we have the option of using the original sounds? The new sounds are too quiet and I can't hear if someone is calling when I'm in a different room. Plus the ring (calling out) gos "bleep, ring... bleep, ring... bleep, ring" instead of a nice smooth ring.
scott4jesus | Tuesday, Dec 6
I can live with the new sound profile.
Add my voice to the call for equal support of Linux and OS X ASAP.
stevenzenith | Tuesday, Dec 6
beta 2 needs video mute plus the obvious "ringtones"
my firewire camera works ok
bob_wheeler | Tuesday, Dec 6
SkypeMate isn't working with version 2.0
I can't use my IP phone no moore... PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS...
bob_hilo | Tuesday, Dec 6
Good, the video works not too badly. The thing is te normal skype functions which were totally changed, and some are really terrible.
- One, you can't sort your contacts by Skype, THEN SkypeOut on the same list
- Two, if you have typed a number to call on the bottom of skype, after the call, it has disapeared!! And there is no drop down list of the last calls on that section
- Three, the noises are a bit too spooky in my taste, but it isn't too much of a concern as you can change this quite easily!
One suggestion would be to RECOVER BOTH my 2 FIRST points, and it would make the new skype better than the 1.4!
checkxp | Tuesday, Dec 6
One other thing to notice is that when a call fails, it doesn't say the error anymore (like couldn't find a proxy , or internal error # xxxxx) but it just says "Sorry, Call Failed!"
This is quite bad to try to fix your problem!!!
checkxp | Tuesday, Dec 6
The video is very promising, thank you!

My little kid was very impressed
Things that are to change:
1.USB Telbox device with SkypeMate doesn't work anymore (switches to PSTN line often)
2.A lot of noise in the air - 1.4 was much better
3.The Skype window disappears too fast, sometimes even faster
crocodille | Tuesday, Dec 6
I would like the Linux version too. If the new Skype 2.0 would be with ALSA support, it would be awsome! I don't want to search for other programs like Skype, but with video; so I hope I don't have to.
de_laurent | Tuesday, Dec 6
I always think Skype will come up with the best solution, but not here. Video quality is good, but no video conferencing. The Festoon plug-in (free) for Skype is better because you can video conference. (Prefer it to the spontaneia plug in for Skype. I've turned off the video in Skype 2.0 and have gone back to Festoon (which has a neat feature in that you can log in to a recent call that is still ongoing in case you get bumped off.) I'm sure Skype will become the best given time.
wendybierwirthusa | Tuesday, Dec 6
I love Skype because of its functionality- and simplicity. It seems like with every new version new, more confusing interface is coming up. Don't fix if it ain't broke, or whatever they say. ..
Positives for 2.0
1) Video
- It doesnt work on my w2k - even though other applications have no problems. I use logitech QuickCam IM and Simple intel webcam. I belive it is still BETA problem. ( I see only gray box, no video ), but AWESOME that finally you made the step to get video for Skype in one piece ( no more spontania crap )
2) I like the fact that I see my name on the contact list( above ). Helps me to see what name I am under at this present moment.
3) Better graphics for users without pictures ID.
Negatives:
1) The sounds ( ring tones ) is terrible. Keep the old one please, or at least give the option to keep the old one as well.
2) Contact list highlight - the older one is better. Don't add more "cool" graphics when you really don't need to. Skype is beautiful because is so SIMPLE!
Improvements?
1) What about having 2 interfaces for SKYPE. One with minimal options, and one ADVANCED - with all-you-can-stuff-things into-the-program.
2) It seems that the more advances the software gets the cheesier it becomes. Mee Wee ? Soon our computer monitors will be in a shape of mickey mouse head and instead of button start we will have a colorful butterfly – whispering: “click me”.
polishruben | Tuesday, Dec 6
yes I agree with the previous post- I used skype 2 under windows98SE, but wish to find it very soon under my linux desktop (in my case: classic distro fedora core 4, gnome, alsa)
tulevik | Wednesday, Dec 7
sorry just one remark: I like the new default events sound in skype 2
tulevik | Wednesday, Dec 7
i have the new beta version and wanted to try the video function but i dont know how to do it
pinguoana1 | Wednesday, Dec 7
Seems to work ok.
Contacts: Can we go back to the old way so they can be split into Skype, Skype Out then you can sub section into folders if you want to. Also get the highlighted contact to close to a single line again.
New number window: Number disappears if typed into the number window after the call is made so you have to select it from the calls list for a redial (bit of a bore)
Ringtones: Ugh! The one now from the Dual Phone handset if terrible, it would be nice to have dial tone and the normal tones when making a call.
The video works ok.
townsey | Wednesday, Dec 7
Please publish download/usage statistics. I (and I'm sure many others) would like to see if the fraction of MAC/Linux/PocketPC users is REALLY THAT small to insult them in such a manner. Last version released for all but M$ October! You might wanna add the missing features for non-M$ versions rather then putting all your efforts for video-for-M$, which btw has many alternatives for video-chat anyway!
Frustrated
(I agree skype is best, I like it, use it and advertise it everywhere I can... )
diched | Wednesday, Dec 7
BIG, BIG ditto on the contacts... Please bring back the old format.
Maybe I'm not smart enough for this one....
joedon191 | Thursday, Dec 8
Just started playing with it and I agree with a few others on usability. The old one was a bit more intuitive and 2.0 add somethings and taken others away for unknown reasons. Since this is beta, I'm sure the kinks will be worked out.
Plugged in my Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX and it worked without any setup
Keep up the good work.

OK! Great!... now please release Skype 2.0 VIDEO for MAC OS X!
rbazarin | Friday, Dec 9
Another ditto on the contacts and on the ring tones... Video works better than Festoon and Spontania, even with a 56kb modem. Basically I would like the same 1.4 Skype version but with video.
fcanzoniere | Friday, Dec 9
Hi, just adding another 'vote' for MAC OS X version. Thanks!
ricurr | Saturday, Dec 10
The ringtones.....the old sounds back please...they were very good.....
vanlahtinen | Saturday, Dec 10
CPU on Pentiium M 1ghz maxed at 100% with 2.0 and Logitech QuickCam Orb. Audio and video both too choppy to use. Using xp/pro.
Calling Skype user who has 1.4 results in inferior audio compared to 1.4 to 1.4
Hate the ring tones.
howard_newkirk | Saturday, Dec 10
Yet another voice asking for Linux support and information on the release plans?!
agruener | Saturday, Dec 10
I, Like many others, appreciate the new skype video. It works quite well; better than that video function in MS Messenger in any case.
However, I, like many others on this page, do not like the new ringtones. They are too quiet and IMHO don't sound as good as the previous version ones did. If you could please make the previous ones available again (though not by forcing us to purchase them from your online personalization store).
Thank you for your great software.
best wishes.
aluschin | Saturday, Dec 10
Please release a new version for MAC with video ASAP....
tobiasstingelin | Saturday, Dec 10
well...ringtones really do suck...But that not the main thing...i like the design and everything looks ok, except for one main thing...iam using win XP with all the drivers and crap...thing is...when iam calling someone + using webcam...everything except for skype goes into slow-mo mode...firefox is slow...winamp is slow...fix it!
itsniohere | Sunday, Dec 11
Skype 1.4 is so much more of a "cleaner" interface. 2.0 is slower to load, the contact list is not sorted like it used to be (online, offline / skypeout) and no contacts selected by default. Why couldn't the skype team have just added the video without tinkering with everything else that was working fine?! Hope these issues are fixed for skype 2's release because everybody seems to be having problems with this one!
hamadalwazzan | Sunday, Dec 11
First impression of Skype 2 was not good. Could not connect then the computer would lock up completely. (XPPro plus SP2). Uninstalled then tried the obvious - disabled Norton before reinstalling and making the first sign on. Now all is OK.
Like the video, conferencing would be handy but otherwise I don't see a lot of difference to Festoon. I also add my voice to the chorus to loose the new ringtones.
ballyritchie | Sunday, Dec 11
It's good that skype V2.0 is still beta.
The ringtones sound like it has been develeoped during a LSD trip. Or all the money just make you high.
If you make new ringtones it would had been nice if you still made an option to choose the old ringtones.
john.h | Sunday, Dec 11
I have downloaded skype 2 but when I call contacts they cannot see me. What am I doing wrong ?
normanbaird | Sunday, Dec 11
Nice work with the video feature, but guys: the ringtones are a mess. why not stick to the old ones? they did their job quite well. Those new one sound like I lost my notebook in the bathtub. As a compromise: ad an option for choosing between the "new style tones" and "old school"
daniel.friederich.laptop | Sunday, Dec 11
Agreed. The tones are terrible. The old tones were fine, at least they sounded like a phone, not like a regurgitating cat on an LSD trip getting rid of a hairball on a bad curry night.
mick_at_home | Monday, Dec 12
Hi
I love the new Beta version 2.0 only thing that I do not like is the Contact bar before we had Skype on line users separate from the Go Skype users can we have that back it is so much easier than the way it is know.
Malcolm Shipman
malshipman | Monday, Dec 12
We are tired about Windows and about people who could not do without MicroSoft!
Please release Skype 2.0 for Linux.
Thank you in advance.
ginkuz | Monday, Dec 12
I agree with many people here... tried Skype 2.0 and... have chosen to go back to 1.4... it seams 2.0 has only ½ the features of the GOOD 1.4... and going to 2.0 just for video, does not make sense... you can plug-in free Spontania video and have better functionality than with 2.0...
Also, there is Yahoo with lower to landline prices... but, I prefer Skypy’s GOOD 1.4... why Skype just not add the video to 1.4...? ... 1.4 is the best yet system they have designed... better than 2.0... and even though I am on PC... like most of the people here I will be moving to Mac... Win PC with Win XP Pro and a Macintel X86 can do native Tiger...
So it is perhaps time for Skype to recognize this and release Win, Mac and Linux versions at the same time... and not to BIG promote 2.0 that has ½ the features of the GOOD 1.4...
enkijr44 | Monday, Dec 12
Looking forward to being able to use this on my MAC!!!!

Glad to see that you are still inventing and having fun! But I think that perhaps you went too fast this time. Need a sober-minded product manager of some sort, to authorize new inventions, and filter out things when there is "too much"?
After having used 2.0 BETA for a bit over a week, I still haven't got used to the new Contact list (although I perfectly understand it, when I think a bit), the new History list (here you certainly have not applied the "count number of clicks and mouse travel distance" in the UI design), and I truly miss several handy small feature, that were there in 1.4 (most of all redialing recently dialed numbers, that were entered manually).
From a graphical point of view, 2.0 BETA is less attractive. 1.4, on the other hand, was close to perfection.
The sheer number of different toolbars, grouping bars, etc in 2.0 makes each section turn horizontal-looking, which is the "sleepy look", while the 1.4 contact list most often stayed vertical-looking, which is the "active look". The sleepiness is further promoted by the new, very big size of the selected contact. Too big, I would say. Unnecessary shadowed borders and stuff. 1.4 had it pretty elegant (almost too big there, too). It MUST become possible to quickly and easily collapse all list elements. Very seldom I want to look at one contact expanded for more than a few seconds. Most often (the whole day, in fact) I want to see the _list_ as a whole, with as many contacts as possible visible. For me, it wouldn't be necessary to have the selected contact expanded at all, in fact. (But the way 1.4 does it is OK.)
The use of colors was much more attractive in 1.4, too. I think the blue theme could have been spared for the web and the Skype logo, while the icon - and definitely the pictures - could have stayed red.
The UI should be simple. Please don't invent a new way to pop up popup menus for each new feature. Right-click is fine!
I would be just so happy and relieved if the final 2.0 would visually look like 1.4 again.
I love Skype, but 2.0 BETA is not Skypeish!

I would like the new version 2.0 much better if it worked with my firewire dv cam. When will this be supported? Many other apps can use it. Also, I am waiting for the Linux version so I can talk on my Linux machine.

Video with Alaris weecam (parallel) on Windows XP isn't working. Like the idea, though.

When is Mac version available?

+1 for linux.
Microsoft users already have MSN messenger with voice and video, and they also have a lot of alternative (yahoo,...).
You are stupid to neglect users of linux and mac os X who are a stenght of YOUR system.
Don't be silly, develop skype with video for linux and mac os...
ray.ishido | Tuesday, Dec 13
A quick count show that 30% of the message here is to ask for a linux or mac os version.
Negligible I guess...

I have an older (still fantastic) USB ViCam that won't work with the Beta version. I worked fine with 1.4 & Festoon.

The video is terrific, thank you! Grandma can now see her grandchildren thanks to Skype 2.0... The motion and quality is the best we've seen, and I love how you can make the video window bigger!

Yeah, the ring tones suck.
The contact list DEFINITELY needs to be sortable.
I don't care about seeing my SkypeOut contacts until I need them. I want to see when my Skype friends are on-line, however.

(1) As everyone agrees, the new ringtones are shit.
Or maybe even he composed them? He must be a sort of a macho because he replaced warm, delicate curves with ugly squares...
I like the intuitive grouping, with drag-and-drop, of MSN Messenger 7.x - why don't you keep up with good solutions? If you do not want to loose clients, you HAVE to maintain your image.
(2) The new contact list is more difficult to navigate than in 1.4. Two thumbs down. Contacts "in focus" get sooo big, and are displayed in such awful "frames"... I think your new UI designer drew inspiration from the ringtones
(3) Grouping works somehow - except the old way with not authorised contacts at the bottom. I cannot have it back

re the comment on video cams - I find we cannot use the videocam mike when using Skype 2 in video mode. Only and external mike works. Hope this will be fixed. Does a regular webcam work on both audio and video? I hope this will be fixed in the final release.

Ditto to madoll's comments and others of like mind.

+ Video was the feature I wanted. I like the way it's integrated, (but it drags my PC WAY down so I'm still going to try Spontania, and may yet go back to 1.4.)

- Don't like the new contact list, tabs, size of selected contact, etc. Don't like to have a mishmash of inbound landline contacts mixed in with my prime Skype contacts. PLEASE go back to 1.4's format.
- Really don't like how hard it is to clear the call list!
- The system seems to be less stable. Calls get dropped regularly in mid-call now, and my wife reports regular blue-screens, where it was all rock-solid before. My system hasn't changed, only Skype.
Thanks for Skype, and thanks for continuing to innovate, but stability's more important than an ever-changing UI....

Some Things Should Not Change:
Like Classic Coke, the red colour of the Skype desktop logo, and the well-known sound of a Skype phone ringing.
joncohen2 | Thursday, Dec 15
using version beta 2: and love most of the features: I agree that users need and option for old ring or new ring, tried the WeePee but was disappointed that their is no animation in the actual WeePee but there is when you are selection your items. Also a bit expensive for a one off cost so I'll only have one WeePee in my lifetime. The Video function is great and intuitive but I got an error: access violation 00006563 when I invited a non video user into a two way video call (all using today’s build of Skype 2.0 beta) we have to close the video session and could always speak to each other then restart without the conference function and it worked again.

Everything has already been told about the terrible new sounds. I returned to the previous version.
Another thing to taking into consideration. I think the default settings should be that the conversation won't start with video automatically. I almost had a very embarrassing incident when first trying to talk on the new version.

Bring back the old ringtones, the new ones sound horrible!!
Please! Calls to european mobiles could be cheaper.
nex... | Thursday, Dec 15
It looks OK, but the one minor thing I do not like so far is that it *always* highlights one contact. Can't we just have a listing of contacts (collapsed)? Plus I preferred the contact groups on the same page, separated by a line. It should be an option. Thanks!

I downloaded 2.0 Beta a couple of days ago and I have the following comments.
- I really hate the pseudo DTMF tones and regret that there is no way to choose between new and old. I know which I'd be using. The ones that sound like every phone I've ever dailled on.
- The new interface is more cluttered and no so easy to use. KISS - keep it simple sweetie. As someone else said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
- Most of the sounds coming out of New Skype are not a nice as Old Skype. Give us a choice guys.
- Since the contacts list does not display SkypeOu phone numbers it is no longer possible to cut and paste number into other applications such as Word. I found this useful.
Please make the Windows version work properly before you start to fool with minority games such as Unix or Mac. Windows is 95%+ of you userbase and please do not forget this.
peter.ingram | Friday, Dec 16
I hate the ringtones so much that I will probably go back to 1.4 and use Yahoo IM to transmitt the images at the same time, as I am doing at present.

The new ring tones are horrible!!!! Please put the old ring tones from 1.4 available for download!!! If not I will install the old 1.4 and use the video with other sw!!!

We have been faithful Skyper's but we're back to messenger- the 2.0 beta was showing us offline with call forwarding when we were online. Not good since the call forwarding charge to NZ is 1.20 a minute. Please fix this in the next release. When I'm online I want my daughter to see me. And it also was showing her offline when she was online. Her computer showed her online but not mine in America.

As many people said here :
Please let us have the old ringtones
Pleeaaase let us sort our contacts the way we want. My SkypeOut contacts are "polluting" the other ones. I would like to have them in a separate category if I want it.
Also did not manage to make video work on a multi-user conference. Was it planned ? Too bad, if so. Hope not.
However, I hope you being bought by eBay won't prevent you from making better than your competitors... which has been the case until now...

THE NEW SKYPE 2.0 IS OK, JUST THE VIDEO QUALITY IS NOT VERY GOOD BUT VERY FAST... THE ONLY ONE THING WE WOULD IS A MULTI VIDEO CONFERENCE WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE YET WITH SKYPE 2.0...
ONLY 2 PEOPLE CAN MAKE A VIDEO CONFERENCE AND IF YOU TRY TO INVITE ANOTHER PERSON OR MORE PEOPLE IN YOUR VIDEO CONFERENCE AUTOMATICALLY IT SWITCHES TO A NORMAL CONFERENCE CALL WITH NO VIDEO....
THANKS AND HURRY UP WORLD IS WAITING FOR YOU.....

The new ring tones are really useless. The best way how to add old tones for Skype is use Resource Hacker on old version 1.x of Skype and extract them!

I'm afraid that I agree with the 99% of Skype users who hate/dislike the 2.0 ring tone and sound capability. Despite the Skype site indocating that it can support mono (v. stereo) .wav files - this doesn't seem to be the case.
Also, (with the but "this is only a beta") the video is 50% better that yahoo and 50% worse!! Like the PIP capability and the screen sizing but transmit frame rate is woeful.

As usual, you only consider windows user. People complain, you fail not to ear.
Give us a date for the Linux/mac release.
People forgive but don't forget...

Who cares if Skype releases SKYPE 2.0 for the Mac!! Why can't it just be made to support or provide a plugin or something for iChat. IChat rules over everything. I have been able to video chat with Mac buddies ever since iChat AV beta was released (full motion and 640x480 resolution). I hooked up my Sony digital video camera and it worked flawless with it. I have enjoyed it ever since.
The only problem is that noone in the PC world has attempted to match its ease of use and quality... except SKYPE. But, even SKYPE hasn't released anything yet. And I'd rather keep iChat
It would be nice just to have some compatability. I have too many sucker friends that settled with PCs and I can't video chat with them at better than like 4 frames a second... YAHOO!. That sucks.
As a compromize in the meantime, I use yahoo messenger for the video and SKYPE for the audio.

As you can see, nobody likes the new ringtones.
Despite this, you've released the 1.3.xx linux version with that ones, and without providing us the old ones.
grrr.
please make the old ringtones available for download!!
thx.
