Skype 2.0 beta - free video calling
By
Jaanus on December 1, 2005 in Skype Beta and new releases.
You've been asking for it, and the whole team has been working for it for over a year.
Skype 2.0 (BETA). Now with free video calling.
[Get it here.](http://www.skype.com/go/download)

If you don't want to break your computer with the beta, you could wait for the non-beta release of Skype 2.0, which is not too far away.
### New stuff in this version
**Video** (obviously!). Free one-to-one video calls. Even if only one party of the call has a webcam, the video is still shown to the other party. And if you both have a camera, you get cool picture-in-picture effect. You can see the video in Skype window, in a separate window or even fullscreen.
**Contact grouping.** Finally here for heavy users. The cool part here is that one contact can be in many groups. So you could have both "Friends" and "People whose name starts with A" groups and whatever. You have some cool predefined groups also, like "Recently contacted" and "Not sharing contact details yet".

**Mood messages.** Just messages that other people will see next to your name in their contact list, in chats and when looking at your profile.

See the [press release](http://www.skype.com/company/news/2005/skype_2.0beta.html) for more details.
[Get the new Skype 2.0 beta here](http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-beta), and tell us what you think.

For f**c sake what abount Mac !! the last vesrion for mac is 1.3 god damn it, when 2.0 will be released (i mean beta fcos). Come on !! It's obvious wintel has nearly 98% of market, but there are also others there.
h377r1d3r | Thursday, Dec 1
I would like to see my own picture a bit larger, I can't focus my camera properly with a little thumbnail like that.
Also the new sounds are all right, but the lack of hang up sound made me talk to a friend for a minute after the call was over.
viestituote | Thursday, Dec 1
@ h377r1d3r : go get 1.4 beta for mac ! it has just been released
I think we can blame Apple for this 2.0 delay because they don't document their API for video
s.bultez | Thursday, Dec 1
Now that would be great for linux! Is there a plan on when video support will be available in linux version sof skype?

@s.bultez: yeah - i suppose all of those osX applications which use video are either written by apple or done by companies who reverse-engineer those secret video libraries.

Yeah??? Whats wrong with you programmers? Why isn't the much-awaited "dog-trick-teacher" part of Skype yet? Huh? HUH? C'mon!!! Do you know what this would mean to me???! My dog HAS to learn new tricks - you all MUST enable Skype to teach him to do so!! What's wrong with you people??? What do you do all day, anyways??
Haha. Trying to be sarcastic there, folks.
In truth, Skype people, I have been won over to being a Skype fan because of Skype's down-to-earth management and easy, smoooooth functionality.
Not to mention free.
So take your time on the programming of the video/Mac/dog-trick-teaching versions of Skype. Get it to the point where YOU like it - and I'll only be too glad to use it then!

Yep : On2 video codecs.
So it's not a question of sharing QuickTime API, is it ?
I hope Skype video to come to Mac OS X soon : On2 supports it

This is to all you guys calling for a mac and linux versions, i can see why they have only released on windows so far, its the most used platform where they will get most feedback, its not really viable to release all 3 together and then take time fixing each one, i can understand why they have only released the windows version, check the technology and once more stable and complete develop into the mac and linux builds. Its beta, only released today, give them a chance, the windows release has always been ahead and the will stay for a while. You will get your Skype 2 when it is ready.
Im loving the Skype 2, im sure you will when you get it

marcobotticelli | Thursday, Dec 1
and another question: what codec skype 2 will use? h264 or mpeg4? thanks
marcobotticelli | Thursday, Dec 1
I know this software is still in beta, so having problems is likely going to be the norm for a while. I use a mini dv cam for my video conferencing needs. It is connected to my pc thru firewire and is recognized by Windows as a camera device. It works fine in all my apps that use it. Skype sees the device and has it listed in the drop down menu, but it does not display any video when I select it as the device to use but rather just gives me a grey square. I already submitted a bug report for this problem... but I thought I would ask if any are having a similar problem using a firewire connected camera? I am currently using Windows XP Home with the latest SPs. I also use Skype on my Ubuntu machine. However, the above problems exists on the Windows installation since Skype Video is not yet available on Linux. Thanks for any insights!
scruffylooking | Thursday, Dec 1
After I installed the new software my video worked fine. Then I tried the button "turn video off" on the lower left side during a call. From then on I can´t turn it on anymore. I tried to restart the computer but it doesn´t help.
I do get my video test picture from the video options menu but no online video anymore. What can I do??? Reinstalling the beta?
Well, before disapearing it was a great thing ...
marc.patzig | Thursday, Dec 1
To answer your question marcobotticelli, Skype uses On2 TruMotion Codec. Probably the best codec out there although not as well known as h264. This is the same company that Macromedia chose for Flash 8 Video codecs. Its a great codec and very lightweight which is why so many are turning to it.
scruffylooking | Thursday, Dec 1
Mac version of video please!
prgraham | Thursday, Dec 1
The video window doesn't seem to work with my FujiFilm Finepix f810 in webcam mode. This camera is recognised by windows and msn. It also works with the Spontania4IM add-in for skype. The test web camera window doesn't show any image. I like the new interface in version 2.0, it's excellent
vokesalex | Thursday, Dec 1
Need a larger preview window and the ability to take it out of the call tab position.
Also, make it easier to change "sounds"...not very easy to do but I was able to change some of them. Having to convert .wav's to mono (which you have to do in order to be able to change sounds)is not an easy task for newbys.was much easier in earlyier versions.
Hello from canada!
gregcambridge | Thursday, Dec 1
I have a Panasonic PV-GS200. It's a mini-dv camcorder. It has a usb connector and can run in "Web Cam" mode. Doing so makes it appear as a webcam to windowsXP, MovieMaker, Spontania, etc. It works fine in these programs.
Skype beta 2.0.0.43 sees it and calls it "USB Video Device", but the preview window is just grey. no video.
I've read about another guy here who had this problem with a dv cam connected via firewire. Perhaps Skype needs to become a bit more broad in it's compatibility of dv camcorders.
daletinalucas | Thursday, Dec 1
Any plans to support video on Windows 2000?

Add me to the list of enthusiastic Mac Skype users, and ESPECIALLY add me as someone who wants video too (using iSight).
For that matter, I'd love to be able to play an iTunes song so that a listener could hear it too. There seems to be a Windoze app that does that, but can't find anything for Mac.

I agree, the ability to share my desktop over skype would be great and also a white board, maybe a box which you can just drag and drop different pictures or files into or draw in, the reciever can choose to pick up the files out of the box or not, could be usefull in group chats as some ppl dont need individual files... all in all... GREAT APP THOUGH!!!! This means that my wife can talk to her parents in the USA from perth and it not only sounds better than a phone, but they get to see her too!!! Now if only the Thanksgiving turkey could be sent over Skype too

I'd love this to work well. Currently I'm having the same problem as in the previous comments - my mini-DV (JVC GR-D53) is spotted and listed as an option in the "Select webcam" menu, but I only get a grey square in the preview window. I tried connecting via USB, but I think I need to install drivers which are on some lost disc somewhere.... Video chat is the only way for my parents (UK) to see my kids (New Zealand) and apart from Eyeball chat (which is a fairly flaky) all the other solutions give small videos and few options on what level of quality I would prefer. I'm rooting for you guys to get this one right!

mike2376 | Friday, Dec 2
Very nice awaited version. The lack of explanations means I have to experiment, but otherwise the sound is great as usual and the picture(test)is decent without too much pixels.Only the various dialing sounds are kind of unusual and I need to get used to it.
By the way, video between skypers is fine, but is there a chance, in the future, to have also video on skype out?(video phone).
It would be the summum, and beat all other programs.

Excelent work! I have got some comments to new version.
1) Why is there one contact always selected and showed its details in contact view? In version 1.4 it is ok.
Suggestion: First click will show contact preview and another one will hide it.
2) And one improvement... in contacts tab, when you select contact, it will be useful to see 4 small button near contact name to call them, chat them, send them a file and view details. It is to much clicks and mouse moves to open context menu or to move mouse up to main menu.
Thanks. Really great work and good luck in future!
wellczech | Friday, Dec 2
I have not tested skype 2 with an actual call, but when I test the webcam (a Logitech QuickCam Express) the whole screen starts to flicker. The video image seems to work fine, but it also seems that Skype is not all too happy with my graphics card (an absolute standard built-in type) so that whenever the wideo image updates, the whole screen makes a slight flicker. Since the video image updates several times a second, the result is far from pleasing.
jakobkramer | Friday, Dec 2
3) double clicking Skype system tray icon opens Skype, but doesn't close it again. Previous version did
wellczech | Friday, Dec 2
1) Why not reactivate the mouse scrolling function for the contacts tab?
2) Need an icon on the toolbar just to start video calling automatically or not.
3) Need a new "echo456" test service for the "Skype Test VideoCall"...
massimo_2k4 | Friday, Dec 2
Very nice. BUT:
1) Need version for MAC OS X!!!
2) Video is a bit slow - not live. Would like it to be perfectly live like in iChat for instance.
OF COURSE though, skype is way better than iChat, don't get me wrong.
Keep up the EXCELLENT work!!

Ruined all the decent sounds for ringing etc. that were in version 1.x, and worst of all, the video does not work in Win98SE. If I can use a webcam in MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, and other video conference software in Win98SE, why can't I have the webcam work on something other then the awful WinXP with Skype?
dariuszski | Friday, Dec 2
Still want an ability to delete ONE call (usually but not always failed ones) from the call history. Currently you can only delete ALL calls from that number, pretty useless if I only want to delete the failed call / 1 second call from the call list.
dariuszski | Friday, Dec 2
I use Windows XP Pro and I tried Skype2.0beta yesterday. But I failed to use the VideoChat Function yesterday. No matter how I tried, the stupid skype just recognized my first TV hardware only, not the second -- my WebCamera ...
Please fix this bug and I am eager to try this charming function!

To all who have been asking for a linux version of Skype 2.0:
ARE YOU KIDDING??
We are centuries behind every other user here. We are still at version 1.2!!
There's an absurd bug concerning sound with Skype for linux for about 3 months now, and despite the fact that a massive amount of people in the forum begged for it to be fixed, so far nothing has been done.
I'm beginning (and that's a very sad thing) to get *REALLY* disappointed with Skype. The Winblows version is fine, every other workstation in my company uses it with little problem, but I use linux here AND at home, so I have to stick with the sh**ty version...
Hip hip hurrah!

hypertexthobo | Friday, Dec 2
Hi Janus & Co.
First - let me congratulate you for having made a great tool, and your recent sale to eBay, which makes all selfemployd people get high on the fact that dreams do come true some times. Well done.
I am using SKYPE on my MAC with OS X Tiger which works great.
I have one improovement to wish for - when I hook up my USB headset - all outgoing sound is then directed through this, which makes it a bit unhandy to swich from playing musich via my normal speakes, and easy swich to headset when skype is ringing. I gues it is both something that Apple has to work on as well as you guys. If I lounch Skype whithout having my headset pluged in, I cant just plug in my headset - I have to close down skype, then plug in my headset, and then launch skype, to make the sound work through the headset. I can open preferences and then manyally work around this, but that is not very handy...i´m sure you get my point and hope that this can be solved in the next upgrade for MAC.
second - I look forward to be getting a video app. for MAC. I still think that iChat is the best, having the possibility to have a video chat with up to 4 participants. However not many have iChat which makes it a bit half leged. The second best will be Skype with Videochat possibility. You might be able to learn something from Apple´s iChat and maybe outperform MSN and the others by having the feature og making it possible for videochat whit several participants ???
If anyone can do it - it should be you guys !
Go for it!
I just noticed that my comments are made under the name Maryjohnson903, which has nothing to do with me ?????
Best regards
Tobias
tobiasfeldt | Friday, Dec 2
Good job! I won't list all how much I like all the great new features we can now enjoy because there are too many! A few comments on the new version:
1. navigation between groups isn't very convenient. A few tabs on the group line would be faster/easier than clicking to make a menu appear (keeping it open takes too much vertical space in the window)
2. it seems we can't modify the info on our contacts details. What if I want to add a note or a phone number to their card for my references?
3. it'd be nice to be able to not have any selected contacts as in 1.4
4. click the tray icon to open the window... but click to close has disappeared
Thanks for the new and improved Skype !

Skype Out contacts are no more separate on teh contacts tab. Online Skype contacts are not at the top as they were before.
Why screw with what we get used to?
At least you could provide a way to keep the old sorting scheme. Now I have to go up and down to see who is online.
With me using Skypoe for almost all my long distance calls it is more than 2 hundred numbers. Sorry, I am switching back to 1.4

WHY I CANT SEE VIDO IN SKYPE VERSION 2.0
levishuki | Saturday, Dec 3
I like Beta 2, no major problems found so far.
Running with XP and Creative camera.
Would like a larger preview window, and the ability to place it anywhere on the screen.
Dump the new "BathTub/Sonar" sounds, and return to original ones.
Cheers Stewart

sweet...I got a crappy iCatch usb webcam, it sux cuz it's so hard to find out who actually makes/supports it, but it still works. Except in the new skype, sometimes it takes one snapshot and just keeps displaying it to the other person and sometimes it just sends a black screen. Same with the test webcam thing, sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it just shows a blank screen. It detects it fine though...
pleez make my camera work too
or a linux version

Congratulations on the new version. I think no-one made this point: some of us might like to use Skype to call 3G-enabled phones... Technical solutions for Skype to act as a gateway are already on the market, and I'm sure you could use the existing SkypeOut infrastructure to reach mobile 3G phones. That would really add a wonderful touch to the already-useful tool that Skype has become for many.
ciprianman | Sunday, Dec 4
My problem with Skype 2.0 is that my contact list is not sorted like it used to be; it used to be that my online contacts were first in the list, followed by offline contacts, then SkypeOut contacts... and as far as I know there is no mechanism in Skype 2.0 to change this.

my video is a bit slow. i'm only sending 5 pfs to my video-chat-partners, but my webcam is able to send 30 fps!!
however, receiving pictures works fine!
a really annoying thing is that a videocall uses more than 50% of cpu-performance on an intel centrino cpu. please reduce cpu usage, our hardware would thank you for it.
great software, keep on coding.
i scrutinised the new beta to death -> same issues as all other posts.

I'd like to see a version of Skype for the Palm. The new Palm TX (128 MB, Wifi, Bluetooth, Hi-Res) would be a great fit.
It'd be a free Internet phone anywhere there was a hotspot. In some places that have ubiquitous free hotspots, having SkypeIn and a Palm TX would let you get rid of your cellphone.
Skype definitely needs to get a Palm version, and they should try to have Skype pre-installed on Palms when they're sold, too.

as i said already: nice, great, big love for skype. whatever version. but guys: what happened to your audio-departement?? all died? the new sounds suck. i don't need any bubbly-wubbly tunes, i want the good old rings back! and if you think it IS necessary to have something new: why not allow themes to chose from? so the nostalgic among us can get the original sounds!

Love the version 2.0 beta
I've been using the video features with success with my contacts between cities.
I feel the MAC OSX version will be a breakthrough! In Canada, not many people IM using AOL - which is the only interface Ichat AV works with - so it's useless for my business. Skype has easy adoption with my clients in the PC world, and I can't wait to use the new video features in a MAC OSX version - quite groundbreaking!

Skype 2 for Mac OS X
A lot of Mac users use Skype, and I think most of us (and Linux users too) find most of our friends/associates are on Windows, so I wish you all the best with the OS X version - crossplatform videoconferencing that works seems to be more difficult than it ought to be.
BTW, I am willing to alpha/beta test if you like, and spread the word. I sell webcams as well, so please work with some USB ones (and/or the macam software) for people who can't afford an iSight.
I also hope it'll work well graphics-wise, and that I can, for example, videochat on the screen of my 12" PowerBook while working on my external screen...

2.0.0.43 beta: Cool but buggy...
We're using Win 2000 with Logitech USB Pro 4000
(worked quite OK with VSkype / Festoon).
Tried it out with beta 2.0.0.43 with automatic start of video when talking to someone with video - wie had hard trouble getting it to work (starting pc several times, fist we saw only grey fields, then something said something like there would be low capacity für the camera at the bus of pc).
After two or three restarts it worked once - nice quality.
But then PC froze (no bluescreen, just mouse and everything totally frozen) - no chance to get it back to life but hard reset.
After having this two times I'm waiting for a stable version...
Sound quality is much better, longer conversations don't fade away ansy more, even when talking to someone woh still has an older skype-version...
NEED:
2 One-click-buttons at each contact with camera to choose
a. only talking or
b. videotalk...
(or 3: chat)

Skype is great!
For the future OSX version one thing is very important:
- compatibility with the iSight firewire camera.
A lot of OSX users out there already have this camera so it is vital to have it worked with Skype!
Thanks.

Version 2.0 is a great improvement because of Video, however I (and many others) found the following problems which shouldn't be there. Being a Beta version doesn't justify them because these things were fine before:
1. New contacts are not always added as centralised
2. Old way of grouping contacts has disappeared and is no longer possible (online, offline, SkypeOUT, not authorised)
3. Mouse scrolling over contacts is no longer possible so now we are obliged to use the keyboard or the scroll bar
4. sounds have changed: when placing a call the new sounds are horrible and, the first times make you think there is a failure.
There are also some problems because of this version being Beta, but I assume it's normal that the new video feature makes it unstable and easier to crash. I guess that these problems will be corrected while the feature is tested on a large scale.

Hi, I am not sure whether this 'forum' is also meant to file complaints, but what the heck. I downloaded and installed Skype 2.0 beta, the program found my camera easily, I chatted succesfully a few times, both with people using their camera too and with people with no camera, and then, next day after starting my pc, no image to be seen. Checked all parameters, which I did not change in the first place, but to no avail. Installed to program anew, no effect. What can I do more to get my image bach?

I hope for a linux version, I think Skype will finally beat the concurrence doing it .. Please give also to us the chance to video call with someone in the world ....

Linux/Mac users wanting video will probably have to wait until On2's VP7 codec makes it into the *nix world. Hopefully the deal with Skype (and users vocalizing requests for Mac/Linux support in forums such as this one) will help Skype to lean on On2 and get the codec into the Mac/Linux world. Add my vote to the list of those requesting video support for Mac OSX and Linux. Great product.

It seems, that this software is something, what other is able to provide since years. In addition, I have major problems with beta version, e.g. I cannot add contacts with skype name, only skype out contacts manually.
Hopefully, V1.4 is the better choice...

does anyone share my experience, that when my remote caller switches on the video screen, the sound quality gets very bad , almost impossible to hear the conversation, because of dropouts in the speech.on skype2 beta of course???
paulbarry | Wednesday, Jan 4
Skype 2.0 absolutely better have the ability to optionally delete a single Chat History.
When the person.html Chat History HTML file gets too long, most all browsers will crash when trying to open the sometimes huge Chat History files, but the browsers of course work fine on the smaller Chat History files.
They appear to be separate HTML files on the users system, hence, Skype 2.0 had better have this capability, as to NOT have it places Skype users at a distinct disadvantage.
Secondly, we presume that Skype 2.0 allows users to easily locate separate Chat History's on their systems, and to backup these Chat History files, separately.
This would only seem to be common-sense.
This Chat History area was a major problem in Skype 1.x, and it would be a shame to see it extend into Skype 2.x as well.

Ive been using Skype with video over xmas so that my parents can be a part of our holidays.
Ive encountered the following problems:
Our internet connections are quite asymmetric, with theirs being pretty slow ( 256d - 128u ), and mine much faster ( 1.5d - 384u ). The result appears to be that my outgoing stream saturates their DSL connection, and they cant send video ( I get about 1 frame every minute from them ). They can see my video fine, and we can talk fairly well. Ive expereinced this problem on DSL connections before, when the upstream traffic is going at full speed the downstream traffic can slow to a crawl. If I unplug my camera then their video comes through quite nicely.
It would be great to have some manual control over video quality so that I can manage bandwidth usage when the auto system doesnt get it right. This should be a per contact setting so that I only have nasty video for the few people I know with slow connections.
The preview window is too small, it should be resizeable, and it should get bigger when you go full screen.
The active area of the full screen button is too small. Rather than the icon in the middle of the square being the active area, it should be the whole square. I was the only one in the house who could work out how to use it, everyone else just assumed it didnt work.
Congratulations on the first really easy to setup video solution. Im looking forward to seeing the mac version released, so that I can use it on my main machine ( Ill finally have a reason to buy an iSight ).

First of all congratulation!
I've been using Beta 2.0 from Xmas holidays to talk with my parents and I should say that It works well.
But I've got two simple question:
1) Is the sharing desktop or a board on developing or it is only one of my fantasy...?
2) There will be any improvements for multiconference with video? (Now seems to be unavailable..)
Have a nice job

Am I missing something here? Skype is still free right? Well to all you people complaining, "quit it".
A Mac & Linux version will be updated, it's only in the interest of the software to run on multi platforms. If the Mac & Linux version is running behind then be patient OR maybe BUY a product.
Windows is more popular, it may not be better but that's not the argument. Windows is more popular so will be ahead in development. Mac & Linux will follow.
I fully understand there a loads of Mac users wanting an improved version but be patient waiting for FREE software. Your time will come.
I'm running Windows 2000 and so far can't see a solution for video running on it. I'll wait and if doesn't happen then fine.
I went through this blog out to hear users opinions and what a tedious job it is having to read everyones "What about the Mac" comments.......

Overall, excellent product. We've been using it for several days now. There are a few minor issues I've noticed, though -- stuff Skype may want to check. I'm running Windows XP Tablet edition, SP2.
1. The screen saver seems to disrupt the video system. If my screen saver cuts in and then turns off, my video signal to the other person will freeze. Current work-around is to turn off the screen saver.
2. The video system does not seem to deal well with changing screen resolution during a call: changing from 1400x1050 to 800x600 stops the video signal. I don't normally change the resolution manually, but certain games will do it.
3. The little picture-in-picture display's frame rate runs progressively slower as the call gets longer, suggesting a resource leak. After several hours, it can be 0.1 fps or slower. Skype.exe's memory use in the task manager also gradually increases. Hang up, give the virtual memory time to flush out, and call back, and things are back to normal.
