Skype for Mac OS X 1.4 beta
By
Jaanus on December 1, 2005 in Skype Beta and new releases.
This morning we released Skype 1.4 beta for Mac OS X. The new version contains some new functions, like Call forwarding, Mood messages and now iTunes pause automatically when you receive a call on Skype. There are also loads of tweaks like new sounds, new sign-in screen and some other UI updates. Hope you like it. No video yet for Mac OS X, but we’re working on it.

Cool. I'll download and try it once I get home. And I'm looking forward to Skype Video!
Just wanted to tell you guys that one of the reasons I love skype is that the cross-platformishness is done well.
malte_sturman | Thursday, Dec 1
I will rejoice when the video is cross platform
I will run through the streets joyfully when it is as good quality as iChat AV.
zedwards | Thursday, Dec 1
thanks.
i've been feeling a little left out

I can't wait for Video that will work cross-platform! I know a lot of people that would switch to Skype just to use that function.
Keep up the good work!

While the addition of video would be nice, it's not something that I'd give focus to at the moment since I do not know anyone who actually owns a webcam. My primary concern for the Mac version is gaining some reasonable hardware support as the current range of handsets that are Mac-compatible is paltry (that said, I believe it is worse for Linux). Improved hardware support would make me very happy along with good integration with the likes of Address Book so that I can keep my contacts in-sync.

Is Skype working on video for OS X as hard as google seems to be with google earth?
daveatwizards | Thursday, Dec 1
I love Skype... however I love also my Mac and I am pleased for the new
version AV for OS X
maxim_corciova | Thursday, Dec 1
Mac compatible headsets are only afte market considerations. Apple iMacs come with a camera and mic built-in and the iSight is and excellent tool for use with an A/V version of Skype.
daveatwizards | Thursday, Dec 1
If you get the video to work. Im gonna throw the PC out the window!
Using the cam with my pal that moved to another city is the only reason i own a PC
go MAC

The new version is not working very well. The calls keep on getting disconnected. After a whole day of frustration I've given up and installed back the old version. I will not use the new version until you can make the calls more stable.
Not happy!

Warning to all users of Application Enhancers like "AudioHijack" - you have to exclude Skype from the Application Enhancers using the Master Exclude List (System Preferences - Application Enhancers - Master Exclude List). Otherwise Skype will crash! Looks fine otherwise, good job Skypers!
obsoquasi | Thursday, Dec 1
Some nice new features. However, they took out the ability to specify how long Skype should ring before the call goes to voicemail. I can't get to my computer that quickly.
carbonizer | Thursday, Dec 1
I like Skype a lot BUT you should be releasing new versions compiled as UNIVERSAL BINARIES for the new Mac Xintels soon to be released.
And in fact, even the latest Power PC builds don't run under Rosetta emulation on the ADK.
Come on Skype Mac coders, catch up with the flow.

Skype is great, but video would make it absolutely fabulous. Video pleaaaase.
sedward69 | Friday, Dec 2
does this support contact groups?
desicanuk | Friday, Dec 2
It's not bad but there are some bugs such as voicemail one where I can't check my outgoing message or record a new one. Also why does SkypeOut and SkypeIn seem so poor quality most of the time for me.
I too can't wait for video on the mac version.
akelsall | Friday, Dec 2
Another mac update and DTMF tone support is still flakey on many automated response systems. Enough with the UI updates, get DTMF support fully working in the Mac version!
skwaustin | Friday, Dec 2
Pretty good Beta - so far so good - but please can we keep the sound effects from vers. 1.3.0.17? These new ones for vers. 1.4 are just horrible.
neil.boothman | Friday, Dec 2
Please...Video for mac os x
Skype Rules! but we need the video to uninstall all other IM's applications, and keep Skype ONLY.

I use Skype a lot. No fuss, just the thing that works.
I just installed 1.4 beta. TERRIBLE SOUNDS. I don't want a fancy ringtone when a Skype contact rings me.
I uninstalled, went back to the 'old fashioned' Skype. With a ringtone that says RING

As someone mentioned earlier. I like the cross platform support. Very important.
That is why I was dissapointed that the new Linksys did not work with the Mac. Why is that? Are you guys working on that or will that never happen?
Thanks
Dirk
dirkspiers | Friday, Dec 2
Hi robvkd & neil.boothman!
You're right, they're terrible. But it's not too difficult to include the old sounds into 1.4: Download the old DMG-file, mount it (double click) and Ctrl-click on "Skype.app" - select "Show package content" in the "ressource"-folder inside the package, you find the old sounds (wav-files). Just copy them somewhere on your disk (Maybe add dome "(old sound)"-string to the filename, e.g. with an Automator-task) and then select in Skype's preference dialog on the Event tab the last option in the sound-drop-down to add them all (at once) to the drop-down menü. Voilà!

Nice work - but the welcome message functionality seems to be broken. Don't like the new sounds.
But I do like Skype! Just invested in the small Skype adaptor from Cuphone - worked out of the box with 5 minutes worth of installation.
Looking forward to the Real Thing (video would be nice, but is by no means essential).

Hi great job, but the new sounds are to low and horrible, older was better. And please made an option to disable the confirmation box when we close skype. For the rest gooooooood job. I hope the video will soon coming for Mac users.
nehonhx | Saturday, Dec 3
And I forgot to tell, that it will be great to have other language with Skype for Mac, like french, german, dutch,....

Has anyone had a slurred speech problem when communicating with another Skype user, using v 1.3.0.17, for Mac OS X?
I have no problems at all with v 1.3.0.8, which I have had to go back to using.
Robert.

I live in Japan, and use Skype to keep in touch with my family back in California. Needless to say, it's much cheaper than making overseas phone calls. Alas, as I have a Mac and my parents (in a moment of weakness) bought a Dell, most video solutions won't work... so if/when Skype could get cross-platform video working, that'll make life that much more beautiful for me and my family. Please, please implement this feature with all due haste. Thank you.
garrettalbright | Saturday, Dec 3
Just to let everyone else know, when I updated to the new Beta version my Skype Out credits were reset to $0.00. I'm not very happy about it....
vrmad1 | Saturday, Dec 3
So..why Skype is so successful? Because it works for Linux, OS X and Windows! What would be phone you could call only to someone with good for? So why are you now releasing new version with Video feature for Windows only? It sucks and I am very disappointed! Don't tell me that it is so difficult, look at such an old application like Yahoo IM, it has Win/OS X crossplatform video w/o any problem for years.. It is all just about that Skype think that OS X users are not important for them. You see, we can find different solution (Yahoo for video, Gizmo for phonecalls,..) if you will try to force us to boot our Windows PCs because we won't do that just for Skype.
kubismatik | Saturday, Dec 3
I am very thankful for Skype, which unlike Yahoo, tends to keep the same features going for both Mac and PC. With the Skype video (for Windows only), I am starting to get concerned. Thankfully they say "they are working on it" but I still wonder if it will be months or years (or never) before we have Skype video.
greatcow95 | Sunday, Dec 4
Thanks for the new Skype version (beta) for Mac - the call forwarding is key.
Something that needs to be added to the preferences/controls is power over how many rings you are given before a call is forwarded or sent to voicemail. I remember this option on the last version and it seems it was dropped )-: .......Thanks.

I really hope you can work out soon the video for Mac OSX.
Thanks for your efforts.

I tried the new Mac Beta, and it has disconnected my phone number. I went back to the good version, and still no phone number. Anyone else a fix for this? My Account still allows the login, it shows the number is still valid. You jus can't telephone it without hearing the dreaded "I'm sorry the number you have dialed is unavailable or has been disconnected."

Can't wait for video on Skype for Mac! All of my friends using Skype have PCs, and we have to switch back and forth between Yahoo and Skype - since Yahoo is the only other app out there (to my knowledge) that does video chat cross-platform. Unfortunately, the quality isn't that good, certainly doesn't compare to iChat AV quality. I had hopes for the AOL Instant Messenger, when they announced they were doing video. That would have been a good alternative to Yahoo, but I tried it and it stinx like a skunk. First, they install all sorts of AOL crap like their browser and other plug-ins, then the video between AIM and iChat AV doesn't work, although they're on the same port and iChat AV uses the AIM servers. Go figure!
So, to make a long story short, Skype Video is my only hope for good cross-platform video chat. I'm eagerly looking forward to the day when I can use it!

Oh blessed video! please come soon! I just bought the new imac G5 with the built in camera and if Skype can beat MSN for mac i will hail them as the almighty and spit on MSN!(PATOOEY!!!)Long live Skype and Mac!!!

Yes, we need to get a cross-platform video and audio solution and hopefully Skype will get there first. As it is, it has already saved me for lots and lots of euros and I use it mostly to ring up landlines all over, work-related and also family related as we're spread out over several continents:)
I just downloaded this new beta and like it so far, although I think the old opening sound was better. I haven't received any calls yet nor made any, so I can't comment on that, but:
people are asking for working headsets and perhaps I can make you all happy by saying that there is now a driver for Mac OS X available for Cyberphone K! Yayyy!
I have ordered the phone and I hope it will all work well, but the driver is there and if it isn't posted on Skype, you can get it her: http://www.voipvoice.com/software.htm

I tried the 1.4 beta and didn't like the sounds - the incoming call sound is not nearly loud enough to be audible when I'm elsewhere in the room. I did the same procedure decribed above by bruderfranz, getting the old call-in sound and putting in my ~/Library/Sounds folder. when I selected it for incoming call and tested it in the prefs panel it seemed OK, but actual incoming calls produced silence. So I've reverted to the previous version. Please provide the old sounds as an alternative in 1.4.

Does anyone know a program that can video-chat from a MAC (OS X) to connect with vSkype (PC Users). I use Mac OS X and can't wait until skype comes out with its vskype verison for it.

1.4b is supposed to support 'mood messages', but the official instructions are not clear:
"To set your mood message your can click on the on your profile name to drop down the mood view or go to File -> Edit My Profile to add a mood message"
...appears to be a Windows only instruction, for Mac it's: Account -> Edit Mood Message...
Out of date or inaccurate instructions could affect my mood...

The new version with video for mac when?
sammygi | Thursday, Dec 8
GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!! While in video mode, the little picture of myself could be a little bigger (or maybe we could choose the size ourselfs??)
That pretty much sums it up. Easy to understand, and with a nice look to it!!
The "Fullscreen" made my day
Fortunately I own a windows pc besides my mac. But to get it to work on mac (or compatable with iChat), would make you people the ""WORLD CHAMPIONS"" building the bridge between mac and pc BUDDIES.
But again, the best I've seen and USED !! (besides iChat)
THANK YOU !!

totally agree, skype do something! skype is not working on the x86 platforms

I am new to Skype but I do hope that the video capabilties Skype work with iSight since I'm not planning to buy a new "chat camera".
skypebox15 | Sunday, Dec 18
i agree with the above comments about the sounds for the mac 1.4 beta version....they are horrible. yesterday, i suddenly lost the audio feature...so had to switch back to the old version...unfortunetly, the ringtone is not audible anymore...but i can talk/hear the other person.
that said, i am glad to have skype to keep in touch with my friends. i wish the team the best....looking forward to a better version for mac os x and of course, the video
pappu9 | Sunday, Dec 18
When you make the video calls for Mac, does it do audio and video at the same time? Because that would be really awesome!
bnsmith | Monday, Dec 19
What is so hard about implementing iSight webcam use on the Mac? It would make a real difference to be able to have that. Also, why shortchange Mac users in general? Not good.
gauthier310 | Monday, Dec 19
Skype is so cool and I am fun of it. The more I am disappointed that the new Mac version doesn't have the video functions. Moreover, I have problems to hear my skype pc friends. Bugs? I hope this is only a temporary shortage for the Mac users...

MAJOR ISSUES!~!!!!!!!
made a call to a friend using a pc - as yet they don't have a microphone so they listen to me talk and type back to me - (which is great for me cos i can't be bothered typing to poeple in msn anymore!) but ... i recieved a phone call on my mobile.
i said to them - just taking this call - i'll be back in a minute and hung up on the skype call.
i think my laptop is possessed!@!!!!
They could not only still hear my entire phone call - even though i had hung up on them, but they could also hear the conversation of the person on the other end of the mobile really clearly. (maybe a potentially cheaper way of doing a conference call). they let me know by typing messages in skype ... but here's the bizarrer thing....
i shut my laptop lid and put the laptop into sleep mode and went out side of the room and they could still hear everything i was saying! (which naturally i didn't find out till after when i came back to my laptop.
i know the being in other rooms thing is because the microphone is so sensitive but i am SERIOUSLY concered skype mac programmers if my computer lid can be shut and the call is still transmitting.
they also think it's conecting by itself. they told me that a week earlier they had heard me working on my computer and the music i was playing. (i thought itunes was sposed to pause when a call was connected??) this feature isn't working!!!!
according to my call list and their call list there are discrepencies.
please let me know what's going on with that!!! until then, i'm back to using the older version of skype!

Thanks

video video video video... and video. i continue to be amazed by the lack of cross-platform support on skype (and others software too, you're not alone on this one). mac is so advanced in so many AV realms... the everyman can edit video on industry-standard software, and yet he still can't WEBCHAT with someone just because that someone has a PC? i'm hesitant about using the word disgraceful... but i'm kind of going to.

We love Skype, it's so, so ,so much better than MSN. We use it every week to chat with family in America, but when will the video chat function arrive? Whats taking so long?
Keep up the ace work,
Skype Rocks!!!

I am very pleased to iMac G5, it's excellent. I am an expert user in computers since late 70s and my Mac is something I love to use after the others. Mac's iSight camera and AV are excellent. I hope that for these fine multimedia computers/ home centers the Skype will soon support the video, too. I like the habbit how to do the installation and registration in Skype.

Thanks for your work!!! We are waiting for the VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't forget the mac users!!!!!! Once again: VIDEO!!!

The 10.4x UI is improved, thanks. Video would we a good next feature for Skype to give Mac OS X users -- especially one which capitalises on the many iSight cameras already installed. Hopefully Sykpe will bring video chat to Mac before Apple takes video chat to other platforms and competes with Skype in this space. Did I mention that VIDEO for Mac from Skype would be nice?
