What is a WeeMee?

By My status Jaanus on December 2, 2005 in Skype Beta and new releases.

WeeMees are characters that represent you. They can share your passion for extreme sports, cutting-edge technology, punk hairstyles or exotic pets or whatever else you do or are. Get your own WeeMee.

How it works is that you go to WeeMees and then construct your own character from the many available components. And then buy it using Skype credit. Here are some more examples.

Cute, though not free. The price is reasonable and understandable. I don't bellyache with my stomach full.

I love skype

magdad255 | Sunday, Dec 4

I just spent the last 15 minutes editing my avatar. And then it tells me to pay.

You should state that it's not free first.

zotbrad | Sunday, Dec 4

I think the WeeMee's are cool but you have to pay! I personally think it is ridiculous that you have to pay for an animated character!

tedwinder1 | Sunday, Dec 4

If you want us to actually use the WeeMee's, I suggest you kill the cost.

jschwage | Sunday, Dec 4

I think this WeeMee stuff is a little silly.

hamadalwazzan | Sunday, Dec 4

I download the new version of skype and it is great with the video call but i don't like the new tones (the ring tone is also terrible...).
Is there any possibility to get the old tones?
Thanks,
Dan

bought wee mee and then found out problems with mac, non compatability.

dacezza | Monday, Dec 5

I like weemees but it would be much better if they were able to react to emotions during a call

highheidyin | Monday, Dec 5

I would like to see the sign that says "F$ck Meegos, They're C*nts" Explained please.

Either that or removed.

Funny though.

And why arent all the faces available?

The skull
The mask with zipper mouth
and all the other easter egg options.

jeicrash | Thursday, Dec 8

Update to this:

when creating a weemee you can type the following words to see the eggs.

meegos (the one my last post was about)

bone (your weemee becomes bones)

gimp (hood with zipper mouth)

Have fun.

Skype: Do I get a gift for finding this? lol j/k

There is a shortage of hair and facial hair alternatives for those of us over 40 -- of course we may not be the target audience :-)

johnlehman | Friday, Dec 9

I like skype, but i dont know how to chat with my online friends.

amiableprincess | Saturday, Dec 10

These weemees are very cute, but I'm not ready to pay anything for them...

@jeicrash
How do you type something in?
There isn't any entry field...?

nebulaex | Saturday, Dec 10

Cute, but paying a couple bucks for these things as static images just aren't worthwhile... we should be able to change the WeeMee characteristics (at least emotions and stuff) after having purchased one. You should also explicitly state that the WeeMee cannot be changed after saving, paying for it, and downloading... I can see people being easily mislead about what they're getting.

Finally, one gripe of my own... in interests or accessories... where are the hockey sticks/gear? Soccer, (American) Football, Tennis, Skiing, Skateboarding... but no hockey? I'm in the US and I can hear the Canadian Skype users rioting from here! ;P

jaymezz | Sunday, Dec 11

The eggs have been removed, However you simply just typed the words while in the weemee designer.

Has anyone thought of taking a screen shot of your weemee? Then cropping it?

Just a thought. I am under the impression that the weemee's are not static, which is a plus to paying for them.

And the cost goes towards providing new services and covering deveoplment costs....I'm guessing here.

jeicrash | Sunday, Dec 11

WeeMee's are cool !!!
As it happens, my company created a similar tool for creating personalized characters. here is the link: www.shanotovot.co.il
Click the link on the bottom right side of the screen in order to compose your own character (or use this direct link insted http://www.shanotovot.co.il/2005/create.asp)

Nevermind the Hebrew

So what do you say? which do you prefer? Skype's or Mantis's?

danny_il | Sunday, Dec 11

WeeMees are for Windows and Skype website is not clear about that before you can purchase them. After done it the animation does not work with Mac. That is totally unaccepatable.

beancafilms | Friday, Dec 16

I download the new version 2.0 of skype and it is great with the video call but i don't like the new tones (the ring tone is also terrible...).
Is there any possibility to get the old tones?
Thanks,

jirka.m1931 | Saturday, Dec 17

Well now im pissed off, I spent 10 mins designing my weemee and then it tells me I have to pay?

I dont see why anyone should have to pay for an avatar, whats the world coming to.

dospollos2 | Monday, Feb 6

i hate to pay over the internet.. especialy for somethink that kind simple like avatar. you are all mad ;)

dxdinamic | Saturday, Mar 18

Hmm, looks cool. Maybe we'll have to add a 3D version of this idea to our 3D web tool www.vastpark.com. We definitely want to offer Skype integration. I wonder how much work that will take?

vastpark.com | Friday, Jan 19

Visit weeworld.com to get free weemees

garrison.maultsby | Wednesday, Jan 2
