Free North American phone calls: update on availability, Skype Credit expiry

By My status Jaanus on May 16, 2006 in Campaigns and promotions.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. Keep 'em coming. We are already [story of the month on Digg](http://digg.com/technology/SkypeOut_now_FREE_for_US_Canada_) -- please go digg it and help us become story of the year :-)

Two updates that were brought on since last night and that we have been working on...

The most pressing issue was of course many people in the US and Canada not being able to use the free calls. You may have got a message like "You need Skype Credit to call to ordinary phones" or something along those lines. We updated our detection engine earlier today and have confirmation that this is now resolved for many users. So if it didn't work for you before, chances are good that it does now, so please retry. Note that there may be some locations where it still doesn't work -- in this case, please [report your public IP address and location to our Customer Service](http://support.skype.com/?_a=tickets&_m=submit). We continue to work on this.

Secondly, there have been questions about what happens to your Skype Credit now that you got free calls. The answer is that Skype Credit remains on your account and its validity extends the same way as it did before -- your Skype Credit is valid for 180 days from your last call or purchase. This includes also the free North American calls. So the credit won't expire as long you keep using SkypeOut, be it paid or free.

Very prompt attention to the IP issue.

Well done, as always.

Still not working here (in oklahoma - IP 209.xxx.xxx.xxx) and yes I opened a support ticket yesterday.

"We are already story of the month on Digg" - is being story of the month due to a major cock-up something to be proud of?

wayoutwestusa | Tuesday, May 16

wayoutwestusa.

Somebody offer something for free no strings attached and you complain !? Cock up [temporary] or not the minimum would be a Thanks.

BTW I cannot avail of this promo as I live in Europe. Skype any chance one day ...

Still not working on IPs starting 17X.XXX.XXX.XXX. Very annoying as it was working just fine last night.

sfavernal | Tuesday, May 16

Worked just fine for me, land and cell lines, first time I called. Come on people it's not like you paid for this wicked offer. Even if you get only a month out of this offer it's still a deal!

Hi - I received the message "ypu need Skype credit ..." but it still allowed me to make a call (using both 2.0.0.105 and the 2.5 beta) IP = 69.xxx.xxx.xxx

great call quality!

cuonline1 | Tuesday, May 16

Hi - I have the beta version 2.5. My IP is 66.xx.xxx.xx but I am still not able to make calls to mobiles. Tried my own mobile but the call ends as soon as it gets connected :-( Any suggestions?

gd-jac - apparently you need to learn to read. I posed a simple question; i wasnt being ungrateful, etc, as you accused me of being.

the article starts out with pride about being the story of the month on digg. So, I posed the question of whether or not they should be proud of being the top story, since a big chunk of the discussion on digg is complaints about it not working.

Personally, if my company was the main subject on a site, due to complaints about lack of service (even if it be due to technical problems) I wouldnt consider it "bragging rights".

For posting this, you tell me to stop complaining and to thank them for the service. That post of mine had nothing to do with the service (or lack of) being provided to me.

As for the announce of the free calling bit - if skype ever gets it working right, then great, wonderful, and thank you, skype! Til then, just have to sit back and try to enjoy the ride. ;)

Point taken. Should have also read the discussion on Digg before shooting from the hip. ;)

gd-jac: in rereading my last post, i feel that i owe you an apology for the statement i made about reading. It was a little bit over the top. My apologies.

appears i too am guilty of shooting from the hip ;)

Hi there,
Guys, I am just wondering how SkypeOut is making his prices. How are they adding countries to global rate? Why some countries-the rich ones- are on that list and opposite to call "poor" countries is more expensive. Just an example. Romania. What is wrong with Romania that you don't allow "she" in the Global Rate countries list? Please could you do it? There are plenty of Romanian users, really good people. They deserve to be on that list.
Any chances for this?
Thanks a lot for your time to read and respond to my words.

Mexico is part of North America. Don't advertise Free North American phone calls when it only applies to two countries in North America. :)
