Skype for Linux 1.3 beta

By My status Jaanus on June 28, 2006 in Skype Beta and new releases.

Skype for Linux 1.3 beta is now available. There wasn't a new Linux version since the end of last year and I didn't really want to post anything until there was something available for you to actually download and use. There is now, so [download the new Skype for Linux 1.3 beta](http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/13beta.html). One highlight of this release was that support for the ALSA sound system has been the most requested feature since we first released Skype for Linux almost two years ago. Well, it's there now.

[Read more details about this release in our Skype for Linux blog.](http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2006/06/open_beta.html) This is where we'll post any updates regarding Skype for Linux, so if you're a Linux fan, keep an eye on it.

I know you guys have been getting some negative feedback for the lack of visible development, but I am REALLY glad to see you are still making progress ( I was just about ready to switch over to openwengo ). As always, thanks for another great release. I also think you guys made the right move in posting more frequently about status updates on the linux blog - I'm sure that it has really helped hold on to people like me and let everyone know that work is still being done rather than leaving everyone in the dark as before.

I'm happy to see that the development is going on....but of course we would like to have the same sort of fancy things that our friends have on windows... ;-)
Video will be available in the next beta????

I'm still waiting for video!

That's great news, thanks! It would however be better to have given us Linux users some information to let us know that Linux development is still going on, instead of this deafening silence.

The only sign that there was still something happening on the Skype for Linux front was a couple of vague and unconfirmed posts buried deep within a couple of threads on the forum.

This has upset a lot of users who felt they were being left in the cold, with Skype for Linux (and Mac) not even being at 2.0 yet whereas Windows is already on 2.5.

The saying goes "no news is good news" but in case of customers this does not apply... they need to be kept informed. Nine months without news is simply too long.

It is really good to see that Skype for Linux is not dead and that, at long last, the much needed ALSA support has been added. Now let's hope that we get to see a 2.0 and 2.5 release soon, and that we don't have to wait another 9 months wondering whether there will ever be any update at all.

Cheers
Emile

Skype is free. Linux is free. Why Linux is it always the last OS ?

BTW, still no AMD64 native support . Dont want to bring up the AMD roping skype In court for intel deal etc, but I hope you guys start AMD64 support too for next released, after all its just one good compile away. :)

Thx.

A bug if the computer is suspended/hibernated with running Skype: after wake up any call with Skype (both incoming and outgoing) uses the processor (Pentium Mobile 2GHz) on 100% in kernel mode and all conversations are very intermittent. Used system: Fedora Core 4, 2.6.15-1.1833_1.rhfc4.cubbi_swsusp2, up-to-date Gnome, ALSA, and Skype Beta. The hibernation is done by the Software Suspend 2 v2.2, the suspend via the /sys/power/state.
A Skype restart solves the problem.

bozsoki | Tuesday, Aug 8

P.S. for the last, Skype+hibernate/suspend post: the restart of Skype solves the problem only until the next suspend/hibernation.

This slow development of linux version is really discouraging for linux users.

Slinky44: Skype is not free as in freedom (while Linux is), and that's where the Skype's problem is. No open source = no 64 bit version, no development by the community, troubles with installation on various linux distributions.

Wow a nine month wait and now a very buggy beta, and no easy way to submit bug reports.

I wish you'd sort the sound out, too choppy to use on 2 systems (atiixp and ens1371)
I would pay for calls to mobile phones if it was useable.

I just built an AMD64 box to use Linux to get away from Windows. I have $20 in Skype credit and bought the unlimited calling for 2007 to get away from an expensive landline. Now I can't use Skype! I want you to build a 64 bit Linux version. Thank You.
