Does using Skype improve discus throw results?

By My status Andrus on December 15, 2006 in Skype around the world.

No, answered Gerd Kanter, one of world's best discus throwers to a journalist at a press conference this week. Using new technology in the team surely helps, but results mostly depend on my work.

Gerd and his Team 75 plus have a rather unorthodox approach to athletics. Training, nutrition and recovery are important, of course, but on top of that the team puts a lot of energy into competing on winning spirit and information.

Are certain stadiums better than others? Gerd certainly seems to have thought about it. Is strength the most important variable in this field? According to Raul Rebane, team's manager Gerd is weaker than any of his competitors in lifting weights or any other classic discus training excercise. The only thing he is better than others is throwing a roughly 2-kilo metal object more than 70 meters away in a relatively narrow sector. Because apparently it is speed what matters, not strength, and this is what the team is focusing on. And it seems to make sense. This summer Gerd threw discus some 73.38 meters which is 3rd best result of all times.

One more thing that sets Team 75 plus apart from many athletes is that they use Skype a lot. With team mostly in Estonia, coach in Sweden and camps and competitions around the world it helps them save money and communicate better. From sending a video from training over to coach via file transfer and talking it through over a video call to hosting a Skypecast to Estonian journalists from South Africa - Gerd and his team use the latest and gratest not only in training but also in communications. We'll keep Team 75 plus up to date with any new features that may help them to have more productive conversations and wish Gerd luck to nail down 75 meters soon.
