Free Mother's Day calls with Skype
By
Peter on May 13, 2007 in Skype Campaigns and Promotions.

For those of you in the US and Canada, you shouldn’t forget that today is [Mother’s Day](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day) — and even if you have, it’s not too late to do something about it ![]()
Skype is offering free calls to US and Canadian residents to **anywhere in the world** * until 4.59am Eastern Time tomorrow.
If you don’t have Skype, it’s easy and free to [download and install](http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-gogmother).
This is a great opportunity to get in touch with the people you love, no matter where they are in the world. Plus, we won’t tell anyone if you don’t *actually* call your mother.
\* *There are a few [rules](http://www.skype.com/campaigns/giftofgab/terms.html), of course.*

I have been trying to use this free call since 5 AM (EASTERN STANDARD TIME) but it would not let me. It keeps saying "I do not have enough skype credit."
Do I need to buy credits or have skype out? If YES, then it is really NOT FREE because to have skype out you need to buy at least $ 10.

The e-mails didn't say you have to BE in the US or Canada...remember there are those of us in other countries that have mothers to call in the US...I was throughly disappointed when trying to call my mom from Spain...

I TRIED TO USED THESE "MOT'HER'S DAY FREE" AND MY CREDITS WAS CHARGED. SKYPE: WHAT IT MEANS? I HAVE UNDERSTOOD IN E-MAIL THAT TODAY THE CALLING WAS FREE? BUT I LOST MY CREDITS AND I CAN'T TALK TO MY MOM.
MY MOM IS REALLY UPSET ABOUT THIS. I HOPE MY MOM READ THIS NOTE: FELIZ DIA DAS MAES............
I TOUGHT SKYPE.COM WAS A SERIOUS COMPANY.

I already signed in, but it still showed I don't have enough skype credit.

I was really excited about that offer also, but... it doesn't work!!! Does anyone know how to make it work?
alexw4 | Sunday, May 13
good idea chaps. fingers crossed this will eventually be the case for other mother-days around the world....

For some Skype customers, the promotion is not genuine. When I try and place a call, I receive a message that I need credits. I have Skype Unlimited paid through 2008 and that stopped working the day they sent me a reminder letter advising of this fantastic promotion. You will find that this problem is not amoung the 'known issues' and the heartbeat page says all is fine. So, apparently no one a Skype is admitting there is a problem or perhaps they really don't even know it. I have been issuing support requests since 11 May. I issued another this morning about the failure of Skype to offer the promotion as advertised. I have verified the problem still exists as of 13 May 13:11 EDT. Very disappointing!

I bought unlimited US and Canada, even my regular skype calls in the US and Canada doesn't work, What is matter with SYPE?
kc_ranger | Sunday, May 13
Not working for me either (Ontario, Canada). I was going to take advantage to evaluate a unlimited account right away. Seeing how so many people are having issues... I remain skeptical of Skype quality and consistency. I see that even people with that are having difficulty getting free mother's day calls.

Yeah. So I am in the middle of Indiana, calling my family in Kenya with the "free calls". Because I don't have to worry about time, I enjoy a good long conversation. I'm just getting ready to wrap things up for the day (11:25 Kenya time), when the call suddenly ends and I am informed that I have no credit left. I previously had money in my account, but because of the advertisement, I didn't worry about watching my minutes. Skype ate up my money, and didn't even give me a chance to say goodbye! What's the deal, Skype?
notthejeans | Sunday, May 13
Can't get any better than this! I've called my family in Kenya from TX and I just experinced a few system errors but the connections were clear. They had to get me off the phone at 11:50 p.m Kenya time. I'll give them a wake-up call again at 6:30 a.m their time. Thanks Skype!
oorichie | Sunday, May 13
Doesn't work. I think it's a way of making people use any credit they have by mistake - thinking their using "free" time but really being charged for the time.
eoinquinlivan | Monday, May 14
It won't work for me either ... I even went and added credit and it still charges me for every call I make. This is really disappointing!
andrearibey | Monday, May 14
Mine is not working either. Please help. Thanks.
qinqinzheng | Monday, May 14

I called today and I was charged for every international call I made! I don't get this mother's day offer!!! Did not work....
vanessavignjevic | Monday, May 14
I tried unsuccessfully to make calls overseas. Looks like a marketing ploy to me. This is a hoax!!!! Skype please remedy this.
alex_ngura | Monday, May 14
skype!....whats wrong with your good company(before).
you made promo for mothers day and its a hoax....you better investigate who made your promo to redeem your integrity or maybe your just fooling most of your clients.its very disappointing that you did this to us.....a free promo thats askin you to buy a credit and eat it......what a shame!
onakreyes | Monday, May 14

Skype also stole my money. I read the terms and conditions and I meet them. I am in the US and called in the required period of time. Any idea what happened?
rubenjugar | Monday, May 14
Try calling landline phones, instead of cell phones.
sumith007 | Monday, May 14
I was looking forward to this offer. I had a list of people I was going to call and say hello to that I usually can't afford to call. I even told all my friends about the offer to try to give skype the publicity I thought it deserved. I'm pretty disappointed by this, and why aren't any skype representatives commenting on this. At least take the promotion off the main page if it doesn't even work. I just feel bad for everyone who lost credits on accident because of this.
kodafox | Monday, May 14
it says in your promo FREE 200 minutes on MAY 13, 2007 to May 14, 2007. I have already used the 146:6 mins this morning May 13, 2007. Since i know that there is still 53 mins left but when i'm about to use it, it says no skype credits. and i check my account and it was written thai still have almost 0 hrs. . I still have to call someone, maybe she will be depressed and disappointed. I already used partially thanks but why is it different from your promo. Thanks..
sweetlaine0230 | Monday, May 14
I made an international phone call, but it got disconnected after a few minutes and kept asking me to buy credit, i am very disappointed! They lied!

It was just great. My wife and me really appreciated the fee-free service today. I wished both a happy mother's day and father's day to uncles and aunts back home(Cameroon) since i'm not sure that on father's day we'll have that luck.
It was pretty funny and i'm happy. Thanks Skype and happy mother's day to skype creators

well.. it worked for me fine.. and i had great time making calls and CONFERENCE calls for free.. it was great.. however, there was only one mistake in this deal and i was ready for it.. the email said that the free calls will start at 5AM eastern time.. that is 4 am Central time.. so i made phone call at 4:30 central time (that's like 5:30 am eastern) and i got charged.. however i beleive i outsmarted skype in that issue because initially i hardly believed that this offer is true.. so what i did is that i made a phone call to london since it only cost (2 cents) and when i saw it was charging i stoped right away.. however when i tried again at 5AM central (6 AM eastern) everything was free.. and then i got the party started.. so basically any one of u who made calls at 4 am central (5AM eastern) as skype mentioned .. they will get charged.. i think it was a bug in the timing .. and the free calls started at 5AM regardless whether it is Central or Eastern.. and after all i thank skype for these free calls.. u guys did a great job for our moms

Thats good that Americans and Canadians got this offer. But what about others? Don't Skype Inc knows that Asians, Europeans, Australians, Africans & South Americans also have mothers. They claim that Skype is a worldwide service, but then why do they offer these types of stuffs only to Americans & Canadians? This is not worldwide. Didn't suite me and also other millions of users.
ahsaniqbal.93 | Tuesday, May 15
The Mothers day thing worked for me.
I made almost 300 mins of free calls and will now be buying some Skype Credit to call landlines. I have previously only used it for the freebie calls.
Thanks Skype, you're doing a great job!

It worked great for me. I had a wonderful talk with my grandmother in Poland. It really made both our days (and my mom's who talked to her too). Thanks Skype!
purplestripe66 | Thursday, May 17
I am extremely disappointed to say that this so-called "free call" promotion was not valid to myself and many other disappointed customers. Before I started calling, I had around 8 euros on my account but after half an hour of calling landlines, I had only a little over 2 euros left.
ctexpresson | Thursday, May 17
Ever since Skype changed hands, its becoming more money hungry (charging fees, cutting benefits,etc.). Why is it that the US/Canada users get all kinds of perks and we, who are in other just as large, but poorer, countries are charged more and get no freebies???!!! It´s about time you developed a bit of a social conscience. Margarita

I also used this free offer from skype and found it 100% genuine and true. Thank you very much skype company.
But, I would like to ask about father's day. Will we have the same offer? I hope we will.
