Skype login problems

By My status Villu Arak on August 16, 2007 in News, events, milestones.

Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype.  Our engineering team has determined that it's a software issue.  We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours.  Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologise for the inconvenience.

- - -

A note at 20:06 GMT: We'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to send us their thoughts, concerns and good wishes. It means the world to those working so hard to resolve this thing.

NYA!! My girlfriend is 12,000 miles away and gettin' upset: call in Inspector Gadget to sort this asap, please!

timothylegrand | Thursday, Aug 16

This is an unexpected surprise, and that explains why we can't logon. Please try to resolve this faster than "12-24 hours" as many of us faithful users need Skype for business reasons!!!!

duehuynh | Thursday, Aug 16

Why is the site also unresponsive?
Symptoms of a DDOS attack are similar to this.
Friends list won't load completely, long time to log-in. :(

adam_sharpe | Thursday, Aug 16

If you need audio/video/chat urgently check out http://www.digitalsamba.com.

Its flash-based so nothing needs to be installed.

The 3-user version is free.

Disclosure: I work for them :-)

matthiaskritz | Thursday, Aug 16

My Skype account got problem in signing into Skype. Meanwhile, my account (not logined w/ Skype gray cycling icon) still can receive the Skype calls for a period of time.

I wonder if some hacker(s) might have successfully invaded Skype's servers.

Skype might have to seriously evaluate the impact/damage to its numerous customers and consider the effective solution against the hackers.

Look forward to Skype's clarification/comment and solution(s).

Have a good day!

Skype...come home...don't crash :(

gary.labandter | Thursday, Aug 16

Looks to me like Skype was caught with its pants down (mooning) j/k

gary.labandter | Thursday, Aug 16

LOL! Yup, looks like hackers to me. (bandit) :)

They would have notified of potential down time if there was a major server update scheduled, no?

adam_sharpe | Thursday, Aug 16

Now that explains why my mobile Version (Symbian) of IM+ Skype over GPRS/3G is not working - there was me thinking it was the phone software :-0
I'm looking forward to the speedy resolution too!

O Skype,
How and Why did you let it happen?
We use Skype and Skype-out for doing business here in Vietnam, and the damage and loss are uncountable....
Shall it be a lesson for us to rely solely on you for communication?

westawaynow | Thursday, Aug 16

"Some of you" is the understatement of the year - 95% more like it. If you need a timetable of this "Milestone" have a log on my blog : http://www.sme-blog.com/comments/skype-having-problems - you can see the millions of users dropping of.

Not the best way to handle this guys! I'm sorry for you, I love your service.

Yep, I am in France & could not understand why my connexion was going on & off.
Anyway it's reassuring to find Skype are on to it.

Hope it's not a terrorist hacker !!!

Couldn't live without Skype now.

ludgerontravel | Thursday, Aug 16

"Some of you" ?
When I was able to get in to Skype this morning, less than a million (out of a normal 6 million) people were on-line.

tomchiv | Thursday, Aug 16

Yep, it happened here in Nebraska, USA also.
But thank God I also use VoipBuster and it is
working fine.

virglin5796 | Thursday, Aug 16

Is the problem the same across the board? My client is stuck in a perpetual "connecting" state for both my off computer Skype/Netgear unit and the laptop version as well.
Is everyone else stuck in the connect limbo as well or will Skype not even load for others?
Heres to hoping all goes well/gets fixed/ and/or miracles happen.
I don't know about the rest of you but I will be checking back in frequently as Skype is my home and business's primary communication tool.
Good Luck All, Good Luck Skype
all fingers are crossed here for you.

bigbluemachine | Thursday, Aug 16

Here in Brussels, Belgium we've had no access all day...

t-e_dudley | Thursday, Aug 16

Seems to be a worldwide problem. Confirm not working in South Africa, NYC, Bahamas, London and Brazil. It's really a wake up call to those of us who rely on Skype heavily for business.

jeff_wyman | Thursday, Aug 16

No service in the UK either. Come on Skype. Time is money.

acceinlondon | Thursday, Aug 16

No service in Greece either, hurry Skype hurry.

elenakor | Thursday, Aug 16

No go 4- us in Maine (u.s.a) - Problems happen. I don't think it's fair to blaim Skype. You'll see. It's just a matter of time till the day that the entire web crashes. other than bridges it is the weakest point of our infrastructure and as relied upon just as much. I hope that I am wrong but ther is so much ill intent in the world right now I don'e se hoe I could be. Galxy Blow records- Wells Maine

genevieve.peters | Thursday, Aug 16

Millions of users trying to unsuccessfully login at the same time could also be causing problems... Everyone should lay off for awhile and let them fix the problem.

hellosluggo | Thursday, Aug 16

12-24 hours! ???
What about people like me who rely on Skype-Out and Skype-In for Business ?
Skype is no longer a reliable communications vehicle.
Nothing can replace good old Landline.
In my opinion the worst thing that could have happened to Skype was the eBay takeover - The service has gotten worse - the a-la-carte model is expensive - and worst of all "it is not even reliable!

snoopsandtrikoli | Thursday, Aug 16

If this is going to take a while, it may be worth checking into VoipBuster.com Personaly I like it better than Skype. The connections appear to be better than Skype. Also, there is not the echo that I have often on Skype.
Just a suggestion. It might get you back into business mode. Or in good standing with the girlfriend 12000 miles away.

virglin5796 | Thursday, Aug 16

It's really a wake up call to those of us who rely on Skype heavily for business.

NO SERVICE IN ITALY SINCE THIS MORNING ON THE 2 PC AND 1 MAC OSX CONNECTED . DAMN !!!!
Why don't send a warning email?

pascalottaviani | Thursday, Aug 16

Did it have to be today? It took me two weeks to coordnate a 6 person conference call from all over the world for 3PM this afternoon. I never fathomed I needed a plan B.

Ugh!!!

cigahs | Thursday, Aug 16

I have to say that you're doing a poor job of damage control with your users and the media. If AT&T, BT or Deutsche Telekom said that their problems would be resolved in "12 - 24 hours", they'd be out of business tomorrow. eBay is under pressure to generate more revenue from Skype - this is a step backwards.

navillusconsulting | Thursday, Aug 16

Poland is off line as well.. The whole day I thought it was my problem, but now I see that it is a community thing.. :-) I hope they fix it soon.

martijnkrale | Thursday, Aug 16

It would be helpful if you posted a note regarding the outage on your HOME PAGE. I found out about the outage through MSNBC. Then when I went to skype.com.....not a word about it so I had to dig further to get here for information. To be forthright would go along way to demonstrate integrity. It takes 3 minutes to update your HOME PAGE with this information. What is the webmaster doing, twiddling their thumbs? Inform Your Customers upfront and don't make them work to find out what's wrong. It's so easy to move past the inconvenience of an outage (because that's life and outages occur). You would have so much more credibility if you were forthcoming with this information.

cannonb5253 | Thursday, Aug 16

I am having a very important video interview tomorrow.
I installed Skype just yesterday for that purpose.
And now it's not working! Jesus!!

Perhaps I brought bad luck to your community!

Please resolve this quickly :)

alexander.zlatanos | Thursday, Aug 16

Australia Offline too...

But Holy crap (some) people! For years I have used Skype without any issues. The one time they do encounter problems almost everyone is on their case. Give them a break! I cannot begin to imagine how tough it would be to manage a system with millions of users at once.

I agree 12 - 24 hours is a lot but if they have not pinpointed the issue yet it's more dangerous to quote a shorter time and have it drag on.

If your business is so critical it will go under because you don't have Skype for a day you need to re-evaluate your disaster recovery strategy and technical solution plan - there is no way I would rely on ANY one vendor if it meant my business.

Go do your thing Skype. We can all take some to do the crossword or something and enjoy the break.

rawdyn | Thursday, Aug 16

As with many others I use Skype for my business. I don’t have another phone system. The lack of communication and "hiding" of the problem is so wrong from a business communications standpoint. I had to hunt to find what was going on and the ability to submit a tech support ticket is disabled on the website. Beyond the service interruption, the Public Relations Department should be fired. Issues like this should be handled upfront with clarity and as much precision as possible. 12-24 hours is not acceptable. I am very disappointed in the leadership of this company.

callen_001 | Thursday, Aug 16

A bit more info would be appreciated. More updates at regular intervals and a moving timeline for having the issue fixed would go a long way to satisfying a lot of customers. The same message has been up all day and only recently appeared on the home page. I bet there are a lot of other providers rubbing their hands right now!

schuey100 | Thursday, Aug 16

To be fair it seems a little risky not to have a back up system for calls. I'm not saying that SKYPE ought to be let off the hook, but any business that relies on a communication method based on the web with no 'outs' is asking for trouble and the leadership of that organization ought also to be fired! Who was it that coined the phrase 'risky business'?

schuey100 | Thursday, Aug 16

12-24 hours! You're now in direct competition with the tape recording via post method.

martyn.bazen | Thursday, Aug 16

24 hours all already almost over, I have problems since early morning hours!!!! please help!!!!!!!!!!

cassiopeia13 | Thursday, Aug 16

This is quite true
We all take for granted our software's reliability
but the truth is that software applications are far more unreliable (IN PRINCIPLE) than the washing machine, or the refrigerator
There always has to be a plan B, especially for corporations, if not individuals

alexander.zlatanos | Thursday, Aug 16

Logging on problems in Finland for about 12 hours now.
Here to be said as well; skype hasn't been working right since the last bigger update. It keeps closing the call by itself, specially when surfing online while talking :(
Want the good old skype back!

jannamai | Thursday, Aug 16

Skype. Take a deep breath. And hold... and hold... and hold...

nlparis | Thursday, Aug 16

Problems happen in life - this is not that bad - it could be much worse. I personally am grateful to have Skype, especially yesterday. Skype was the only way we could contact associates in Lima IMMEDIATELY(!) after the 8.0 earthquake in Peru - phone service was down. We've been using Skype since the very beginning, for business and personal. Thank you, Skype!

cyprianohawaii | Thursday, Aug 16

I've never had a problem the whole time Ive used Skype so I'm not going to let one day bother me. I also run a Jabber client all the time. AIM, googletalk , jabber.......it's all good.

simstick | Thursday, Aug 16

problems here in washington state as well and it makes it very frustrating when your girl friend lives 10,000 miles away and you cant talk...i miss the old skype too and theres been too many problems with this newest update...

wolfclan77 | Thursday, Aug 16

I've been having problems too. It all started last night when Windows downloaded its latest update. Bloody carp!

meatn2vej | Thursday, Aug 16

I have to assume this is all to do with subprime mortgages, since everything else is. Meanwhile, here in rural Massachusetts, we wait to tell the world...

simonwinchester | Thursday, Aug 16

Here in Florida-US no SKYPE as well. I read above somebody wrotes: "I bet there are a lot of other providers rubbing their hands right now!". I am very interested now to have a backup Voip provider. After this problem, for me it seems VERY risky not to have a back up system for calls. Please, any suggestions or any decent provider for Voip?

gem7681 | Thursday, Aug 16

Given that Skype is likely to be down for such a long time, would it not make sense to have this announcement on the home page so everyone knows instead of having to spend hours trying to find why we can't go online with skype. Better to be open and honest about such problems than to hide them.

firozemanji | Thursday, Aug 16

I have been using skype now since almost the beginning of the service, first time it has gone down, my landline and mobile service have caused me far more problems. My internet sevice has had more downtime than has Skype.
Keep up the good work guys.

taff295 | Thursday, Aug 16

As I typed that comment, the service came back on line :-)

taff295 | Thursday, Aug 16

No service in Sweden either

mick63 | Thursday, Aug 16

people you panic like a pregnant woman, I love skype and things happen so relax and be patient and soon we will have SKYPE back (h)

donatka887 | Thursday, Aug 16

No skype in Holland too, but been using it for 2 or 3 years for free communication with friends and never had problems, thx skype. Keep up the good work

marcmelinda | Thursday, Aug 16

I agree with those who say give them a break. I have been using them since the beginning as well, and my only issue was having my account temp. blocked due to their rather strict credit payment policies.

That does bring out the problem with their customer service though. It is practically non existent.

However, if they gave similar service as the other guys, they would also need to charge those prices.

Who can beat such a good program for such a low amount of money? I mean really, unlimited calls to US and Canada for about $60 a year(skype In/out)? I paid more then that each month for a landline.

questarthews | Thursday, Aug 16

i've been all day trying to log in, not knowing what the heck wash happening to my skype. Business lines down, and services i'm paying for. I don't like what i see. i like skype but they should have sent an email or something to the people using it and paying for it! Hey, your business will be down today, please be patient. .... not nice.

lucas.caro | Thursday, Aug 16

It's now 13:31 CST and Skype is still down in the midwestern USA. This is very frustrating.

That said, I think the people who are flipping out over this outage need to take a deep breath and relax. This isn't the end of the world. Your girl will still be there when you're back online (and, if she isn't, she wasn't that committed anyway and you're probably better off without her), your business won't collapse, and the world world isn't going to end in a big fireball today. Well, probably not anyway.

Just a note to the business users: I use Skype for business too. But it is foolish to rely solely on Skype or even VoIP in general as your only source of phone service. Even if your VoIP providers stays u 100% of the time, what happens if your ISP goes down? Always have a backup. Personally, I use both Skype and a mobile and I've never been without some sort of phone service more than 20 minutes.

Backup plans! They are important!

cajuntechie | Thursday, Aug 16

Lithuania is offline also.
I use Skype for a work and for freetime. Today I lost some important calls, ok, I hope, tomorrow it will be work.

But I had also a good lesson: I need to have also other ways to contact the others!

In what times we live: it's enough to cut the cave and we are isolated...

India is offline...parents worried....FIX it!!!

emil_tspl | Thursday, Aug 16

Be careful about jumping the gun announcing that service has returned. I've been in the "connecting" state most of the day. A couple of times I succeeded in connecting only to be booted right back to connecting a moment later. Skype's still down in eastern Canada :(

iggyonedge | Thursday, Aug 16

Hi, don't want to sound alarmist or anything, but in the process of trying to "sign in", I must have entered my password about 10 times. Was this a wise thing to do?

adrian.vn | Thursday, Aug 16

Hmmmm..... silence.... whats going on anyway....? Does it take so much time for folks who wrote the protocol to understand what's the problem with it? Excuse me, but aren't you the guys who wrote it?

linuxtechie | Thursday, Aug 16

Eventually this day-without-Skype will bring more good than bad. Like, people who rely on VoIP for their business will finally think about backup plans. :)

Last time I was connected with Skype today, there was just 108k people online. It's a free service for most of Skype users after all. However, this is the first time when Skype goes down so badly. Shift happens, you know.
Good luck, Skypers! Come back soon.

xilakju | Thursday, Aug 16

cassiopeia13 | Thursday, Aug 16

Am I a gun jumper?

Well, that didn't last long. Down and not running in the Eastern US (Boston, MA).

I managed squeezed out a couple of calls before my connection terminated.

Lets go tech team you can do it. Ra ra shihcumba. Keep on trying you can do it. Go team go...

j.shelzi | Thursday, Aug 16

edwardjsi | Thursday, Aug 16

Where's your loyalty, people? There are few internet services I trust; Skype, Paypal and that's about it.

Skype has made it possible for me to keep in regular contact with members of my family overseas when telecom companies were grabbing at every opportunity to gouge me. Using O2 and BritishTelecom to phone my Mom in Ireland used to cost me £20 for a three minute chat.

So, Skype's having an off day. Many of you have clearly enriched yourselves on the back of this free service - so, chill!

bel_zedar | Thursday, Aug 16

24 horas é tempo demais, precisam resolver porque todos precisam do skype para se comunicar com amigos, familias e mesmo com relação de trabalhos...eu tenho credito no meu skype e desejo que o mesmo não seja excluido por problemas do grupo skype. This is unbelievable service.
I will cancel my SkypeOut

horngacher5806 | Thursday, Aug 16

I very much agree with the above mentioned comment:

"Where's your loyalty, people? There are few internet services I trust; Skype, Paypal and that's about it.
Skype has made it possible for me to keep in regular contact with members of my family overseas when telecom companies were grabbing at every opportunity to gouge me. "

Chill out people, I'm sure Skype Team is working on the problem... (btw no Skype in Canada yet :) )

tigervancouvercanada | Thursday, Aug 16

Argentina is offline too. Hurry Skype!

noa_jbejarano | Thursday, Aug 16

Skype is down in Israel as well. I was sure that I had caused the problem myself and just spent about 8 hours trouble-shooting my firewalls etc., until I thought to check another computer on the LAN. I agree with those who suggest that a more forthright and communicative approach by Skype personnel would defuse a lot of the tension this has caused -- and in my case, saved a LOT of time! Geez, couldn't you have posted a note right away in a prominent place on the web?

modorch | Thursday, Aug 16

This really suck, first they charge you for connections that do not go thru, now this ....
12 hours is too long fix it now ..

Why does a company that makes so much money of all of us, cant afford a phone number of their own?
There is no number WHATSOEVER to contact them ...
Is this normal? ISNT IT AGAINST THE LAW?

Somebody please let me know ...

benmokay001 | Thursday, Aug 16

"Heartbeat" shows SkypeIn and SkypeOut as operational. How can we use those services WO login???? This is suc a nonsense status.

utachi | Thursday, Aug 16

This suck's....
It work's for a heartbeat and then it crash again...
PLEASE!!! fix it.. it has been like this all day long, at least in Sweden..
12-24 hours to fix it!?!?!?
It sound's like TELIA.. the Swedish national phonecompany.. Oh my ..*ugly word*

jernfamiljen | Thursday, Aug 16

Whilst it seems not unlikely that the problem is in some way associated with the Vista and XP update patches issued yesterday (see the words of Tom Keating linked from this page), restoring my Vista system to a point prior to the installation of these patches has however made no difference whatsoever to Skype accessibility - or lack thereof. Patience, however, remains a virtue!

peter_graeme | Thursday, Aug 16

Brasil is offline too...
O Brasil também está fora do ar...

weslevy | Thursday, Aug 16

jesus people, keep your pants on... almost everybody here has been using skype since the early days which means for more than 4 years and now after ONE day off everybody starts to give those hard-working people shit that they do not deserve at all.
Please do not forget: exactly those guys made all the mentioned "private stories" (girl-/boyfriend 12.000 miles away, parents away, video job interview) possible in the first place (for free i mean).
Those people doing business just by using skype learned an important lesson today.

tomorrow is another day, skype will work and no one will give a flying [insert 4-letter word here] anymore; so sit back, relax have a glass of whatever and take it easy.

advise for the skype-team: next time you have a problem do not mention a timeframe, say something like: we are working to resolve the issue as hard and as fast as we can bla bla bla

take it easy, fellow citizens of mother earth and (i know it s hard but try) accept the whole situation with a smile on your face.

thanks to everybody at skype for this wonderful piece of software. Keep up the good work!!

phi.lo | Thursday, Aug 16

Stuff breaks and that is a fact of life.

I recommend to Skype that next time they post a notice right away on their website instead of waiting until the media picks up the story before admitting there is a problem.

I can handle waiting until the service is fixed but what upsets me is wasting my time trying to troubleshoot a problem because the Skype site says everything is fine.

If there is even a small chance that Skype was "hacked", should I even try to log in before the problem is fixed?

Just wondering?

adrian.vn | Thursday, Aug 16

Norway:
After being without access to Skype for many hours my Skype status indicated just a while ago that I was actually logged on! I took advantage of this to initiate a Skype call. The interesting thing, is that although the Skype status of the other party appeared, as seen by me, to be that of *logged on* and as seen by them, to be *logged off* - and although my own status very quickly reverted to the infamous arrows chasing each other, the call was not broken(!) and we were able to continue our conversation for some considerable time. After terminating the call, however, I was again (and remain) unable to make further calls.

peter_graeme | Thursday, Aug 16

It's working!!!!

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

just get it back up, this kind of thing happens.

for anyone who relies on a free(or very cheap) service for a business, you dug your own grave

for those who continue to whine that the problem hasn't been located, try writing some code and locating bugs yourself. errors don't come with big flashy signs saying change here for resolution of issue.

iamnoone420 | Thursday, Aug 16

I'm in Toronto, Canada. Since this morning I couln't sign in skype any more.

I tried my two computer, nothing works. I'm sure it's the skype problem. I subscribe skype as my long distance call!

Is it the same problem as with Custommer Support page giving:

Settings table not built, please goto Settings > General and click Update

? Good luck fixing it. My sms was also thrown away :(

palo.petrovic | Thursday, Aug 16

Italy off too! Anyway come on guys, as a friend from Australia said before, skype always worked fine. For the first time we can find a work around and let the team study on it. If it is really critical to your business and now you are completely over this means that your disaster recovery plan is inadequate. Your fault.

matteomunaretto | Thursday, Aug 16

Wow, 12-14 hours? What the heck HAPPENED!? I'm here in Charlotte, NC... and it's been trying to connect all day. I have about 20 clients waiting for a response from me via skype and I have no way to get in contact with them... and I have to MEET THEM IN ONE AND A HALF HOURS!

Well this early morning I spoke so many hours with my daughter, over 10,000 miles away, and now this ! Maybe I have burnt your connections...Please let us know when the connection issue is settled. I was about to disassemble my computer just before I saw this posting. Meanwhile could you broadcast an error message? We see nothing, just "connecting", forever.

jprcampos2 | Thursday, Aug 16

The worst thing is denial, saying only a few are effected when basically EVERYBODY in my address book was affected.
Why not simply tell us what goes on.
We can handle that - and understand.
Would even be a sign of Skype trusting it's customers.

Never thought about going to some other companies before.
Now I do.

mushin_schilling | Thursday, Aug 16

Hello everybody. Moscow is having the same problem. I cant talk to my family in Canada (((

tubheiaboy | Thursday, Aug 16

Hello everybody. First I want to thank all the skype employers for the good job that they are doing already for years, I want to say to listen to much to all this stupid comments that already where given here. That are only comments from gays that don't now about what they are talking, of course the most of them are trying to put skype in a black point because there jealouse from a great service like skype.
And to the business people that lose lots of money with this issue nobody obliged you to use skipe, go back to the good old landlines and every month you will be down for some days. You all like to profit of the sheap way of communicate but when for once in the now 5 years that i am using skype you want to shoot the driver, shoot your selve and stay quitte this people on skype do everything they can to resolve this probleme so fast as can.
The whole Skype good luck

stucki7 | Thursday, Aug 16

Thanks to mushin_schilling "the worst thing is denial"...

Many people lost so much time searching the reasons on their own PC or other gadgets they use for Skype, whereas the problem was in fact a skype system/service problem.

Why did they not inform all users by email immediately ?

Incidentally I found the post "Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype." . ... "some" of you ???? About 90 % of the users had problems !

There's no difference if you use Skype privately or for your business, or between Skype users or if you use and pay (!) for Skype-out or Skype-In. This breakdown of the whole system has to be measured with which "Skype" claims to be.

Thus, the information policy of this (ebay-) company is in fact disastrous.

(Fortunately I use mainly SIP services which are also free or even cheaper than Skype and much more reliable)

This is not funny. We use skype as our main phone. I am pregnant and have been having contractions off and on today. I need to call my husband who works hours away and the doctor's office. I can't contact any friends or anyone. My neighbors are all at work. Now I have to drive to get to a phone and get help. I sure hope this is a false alarm and just braxton hicks or something. Fix this soon. I am making sure there are minutes on my cell phone from now on. This stinks to the max, what great timing for this to happen.

Please hurry up, My duaghter had her exam results for University today and I am 2000 miles away. This is my only phone. I have had Skype since day one and pay for its service (my own number).... and this is the first time down! Get some decent quality control or testers!.. Ask me if you don't know ant.

traveller1959 | Friday, Aug 17

I've been able to log in from here in Austin, Texas, US at 7:06 CDT (GMT -6), but a call to echo123 produces nothing. I tried chatting with others marked 'Skype Me' but no replies... I just noticed that my connection appears to be intermittent. Weird.

hellosluggo | Friday, Aug 17

I love how many people are flipping out because skype is down. Anyone here of email, cell phones, chat programs, etc. I mean seriously, this is stupid. I love all the comments on here. Here are some fun examples:

"I have clients I can't get a hold of...I need skype."

-DUDE!! Email them, carry a cell phone, and if you have a meeting scheduled show up to it!! Oh my goodness you are dumb. If this is the only way you have to connect then you have bigger business problems to begin with.

"My girlfriend is 12,000 miles away and flippin out"
-If you call her on skype then she can't login either. If she doesn't believe you that it's down and is freakin' out, then I hope she does break up with you and you find someone else, because she'd have to be an idiot not to understand. Or, here's a thought... EMAIL HER! Oh wait, idea two, login to AIM or something man... holy cow.

"My daughter had her exam results for University and I'm 2000 miles away"
-Get a cell phone. Go use a pay phone. Email her. The internet is a BIG PLACE PEOPLE!! Use something else. As it turns out, people have been communicating for a long time now without Skype.

"For two years uninturrrupted service all over the world. One day we have a problem, every one starts to dump. Lets remember the days before Skype."
-The voice of reason among a sea of incompetent sheep. Amen for someone who can deal with a minor situation calmly without pretending like the whole company is crap because of one day of down time.

"To those of you crying out there. STOP it. Are you adults or little children. Those of you who need it for business purposes... Use the wits you were born with and find a work around for a few hours."
-HAHAHAHA! Oh man, that's good. Hit the bullseye with that one my friend. Way to go.

STOP BEING CHILDREN! Pick up the phone! Email someone! Chat with using one of the 20 FREE CHAT PROGRAMS OUT THERE! I can't even believe this has gone on like this with the constant complaining and empty threats to Skype about their inability to bring it back online for you on "your timetable". If your life stops because of Skype, you need to slap some sense into yourself.

HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERONE!! I'm going to go on living now, without Skype believe it or not!

crazybigbillybob | Friday, Aug 17

Hi, Billybob? I really appreciate your fidelity and "concern" such as it is... but please refrain from calling people dumb. It's not your place.

Ok, thanks- g'bye. (^_^)

dreaminjosh | Friday, Aug 17

My sincerest apologies Josh!! What I should have said is that people are being irrational and complaining about things that are, in the grand scheme of things, their own fault. If someone's only line of communication to the outside world is Skype, then they need to reexamine their ways of communicating. If your business dies because Skype goes down... then I have no idea how you managed to stay in business to begin with.

And hey, while we're on the subject, it's not your place to tell me what to say.

KTHXGBYE!

stoopid... hahaha. oh man I had to...

crazybigbillybob | Friday, Aug 17

I for one cannot bear a life without Skype.

I ve just finished writing my suicide note

I hold the people from Skype completely responsible for my untimely death

Farewell

alexander.zlatanos | Friday, Aug 17

DON'T DO IT ALEXANDER!

gravitylovesgypsies | Friday, Aug 17

"Crazybigbillybob", those owho have long distance relationships with people and have to talk through skype DO e-mail, talk on aim, find other ways around it - but honestly, a long-distance relationship is hard enough, imagine not being able to hear the one you love's voice.

Also, I don't think the little children are the ones saying "Skype, please hurry up!". I think the little children are those like you, who actually feel personally offended by others' needs.

Next time you post an offensive message that applies to millions of people, think it out first, and try to put yourself in their shoes.

amariel1 | Friday, Aug 17

Needs? Offended? You have to be kidding me. I can't believe it. This is unbelievable that you're taking Skype being down that seriously. If you can't go without hearing "your loved one's voice" for LESS THAN A DAY then the relationship is doomed anyway because you obviously can't handle a "long-distance" relationship because there are days when you're not going to talk. If people are offended because I'm calling them out on their "dependancy" on Skype then so be it.

Not in the least worried about it. And you might want to rethink you're definition of "little children" who are generally IMPATIENT AND THROW TANTRUMS when they don't get what they want. The number of people talking about dropping Skype because of this MINOR incident is unreal.

Amariel, just think before you start typing next time, because you make no sense when you talk. Next time you try and come-back with some unintelligent babble, keep it to yourself. Thanks.

crazybigbillybob | Friday, Aug 17

That blog is amazing :) Hope the problem will be fixed soon though... See the good side - with Skype crashing you can read pretty funny posts here :D Anyway, it's been now more than 15 hours, at least since I found the problem. I guess it's time for them to handle that issue.

ckyuss | Friday, Aug 17

hi all,
why i use skype ? why skype is more expensive rate for skypeout from similar software ?
i use skype only for simple answer.
because skype is stable. never crash. never give problem. i pay more money for rate skypeout but was stable. now skype look like other software.
my problem is only to finish my credit in 2 account and will be problem to sell my skypephone for good price. why ? because skype now is similar to other program for call.
i am not interested who attack skype server if was attack. i think very simple. i pay for skypeout, i need to use service.
tell me blog, who are interested in stupid games and tools that they put in this program ?
is more interesting use skypefind and all this stupid game or better for them develop a skypefax service??
i had a skypein number too. for my lucky ... really never i am so much lucky i forgot to renew this number .
i use skype for redirect call to my mobilphone and for do skypeout call and they can check my nick log how many i do.
From 16/08/2007 my skype cannot be used. some minute log and after crash again, any account , any computer , any skypephone.
some year ago, they give sometime a bonus when i recharge, now they dont' give nothing to me... i recharge 25 euro anytime and they never give me just 2 euro for free. before they give some bonus for promotion.
now dont' give nothing. just begin to give poor service ? it's a rules of Monopoly because have milion of users ? if you lose time to program a games for skype , i can suggest to programmer of skype to go to play to icq. they have it for them too. if you dont' want lose time for funny games, just use time for build a skypeFAX service for our skypein number!!! but first of all use time for a stable skype program! someone told that this can be attack from google or some other company , from hacker etc..
this is just idea...
yesterday i cannot call this is statistic
today i cannot call this is again a fact!
tomorrow ?
so i must begin to create a new account in other service or repair this problem ?
do you know what i think? maybe skype begin to lose the way : why born skype ? for connect people for cheap price or for play games ?
i was thinking for connect people , audio video chat maybe in future fax too ? in stable way =?
thanks to everybody and i hope skype will come back soon or for sure will lose me: 1 customer !!!

Yesterday I cleaned out two tin cans and put a small hole in the bottom of each of them. I just happened to have a 2000 miles size ball of string so I poked each end of the string into the holes in the cans and then knotted them. I mailed one of them express to my girlfriend who lives 2000 miles away and she received it today. The note included told her to make sure the string was tight and when I felt the tug on my end of the string I spoke to her. You can't believe how clear the signal was! Who needs Skype. Won't be long, Mal from Turkey.

Interesting to see the posts of a certain person who is intent on offending people. Some of us do actually rely on Skype from a business point of view. We pay for Skype as a business and don't actually have desk phones, so we have been relying on Skype to make external calls.

I look after the business control panel for my company and allocate credit to my colleagues across the UK and US. We have been unable to make outgoing calls from the office as Skype has been down since yesterday. There are only so many calls you can expect staff to make from their personal mobiles. If we used BT landlines and BT was down, we'd feel the same way. Stop assuming that people are upset about Skype being down and have no valid reason for it. It is causing us problems and we can only hope that Skype gets it sorted this morning as this has been going on for over 24 hours now.

On a completely different note, I had to mention here that Skype has just about the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I had an issue last week with trying to make payment to them to credit our business account and received so many emails from people who seemed to be just copying and pasting text from the help pages and not a single one was able to help me with the problem. We are looking at alternatives now as Skype is no longer a viable option for us as a business...

millie.roy | Friday, Aug 17

Surprised that Skype have not executed their Disaster Recovery Plan. This is the procedure all professional organisations have in their backpocket to ensure service continuity with minimum disruption to their client base. Is this outage a result of a poorly tested and implemented change? Ouch!!! I wouldn't like to be the person explaining that.

mark.graham88 | Friday, Aug 17

Relying on Skype for business is absolutely insane. I don't know why anybody would do that.

inichol | Friday, Aug 17

Bit disappointed that although we keep being told how much we are loved as customers, how hard everyone is working to resolve the issue (that's good to know) and how tired they are (poor lambs), I can't find any sign of a senior Skype person saying "we are very sorry for causing this problem and disrupting a service that many of you are paying for".

I can put up with technical problems - they're a fact of life nowadays. I can handle the disruption - because I use the service for business, I obviously have a backup. I can just about live with the fact that people calling the primary number on my web site (a Skype-In number) will think that I've gone out of business - because there are two other ways to contact me and hopefully people will use one of those instead.

What I struggle with is corporations that don't give me a grovelling apology from the CEO, whose wealth I contribute to, for making me have to put up with those things because they messed up.

Oh and crazybigbillybob, just . . . oh just . . . just go away, you silly little man (I wanted to be a little 'firmer' with that statement but thought that the profanity cops would pull the post). Anyway, as I was saying, don't you dare to presume you can tell people whether or not they're right to be annoyed at this issue. You go ahead and use AIM or whatever. I use and pay for Skype. I want it fixed and I am upset that it isn't. Are we clear?

"Relying on Skype for business is absolutely insane. I don't know why anybody would do that."

Er, why?

We entrust the vast majority of our written communications to email; increasingly people manage their entire financial matters online; hundreds of thousands, if not millions of businesses only have a sales presence on the web.

Why is relying on a voip service for voice comms any different?

Skype offers a business service. It's an attractive offering and this is the first problem I have experienced in the whole time I've been a Skype user. I have been very happy with what I can do for free or for very little compared with, say, five years ago.

I will admit, though, that I have grown so used to Skype working without problems that this has rattled my confidence in its viability as a potential one-stop solution for all my voice comms. I'll be keeping the landline a while yet. I suspect I'm not alone.

But 'insane'? Sorry, I disagree.

But I am mad (that it hasn't been fixed yet).

"Hardware is temporal. Software is forever. You cannot kill software, for it’s like Casper the Friendly Ghost. No matter how sharp your spear or cutting blades, the attempt will be futile. I run Skype 2.6 for Mac that came to me as a 30MB file. I can download it a million times and it’ll still be there, pretty as ever. It will not burn, drown or develop blemishes."

Whose wise and cocksure words?

bayliss.chris | Friday, Aug 17

crazyjflipkid | Friday, Aug 17

Austria (NO kangaroos), 17th, 1PM, - still offline....

dstockinger | Friday, Aug 17

Relying on Skype for business comms is insane basically because (1) it depends on too many other unconnected services like ISPs and (2) you've got no comeback when they fail to deliver, and as people are finding there's nobody at Skype that you can call (on another phone, lol!) or email to find out what's happening or when your paid-for service is going to resume.

At least if you have landlines from BT or similar conventional provider you can get on to them and they'll tell you when the problem will be fixed, compensate you for the outage, and help divert the numbers to a cellphone during the fault.

By all means use Skype as part of a wider comms strategy but make sure you have an alternate method to make and more importantly RECIEVE INCOMING BUSINESS CALLS when Skype or the internet goes out. There are people on here moaning that their customers can't call them, well, these people should have either retained a landline for emergency use or fronted their business with a type or number that can be quickly redirected to someone's cellphone until the primary comms service is back.

inichol | Friday, Aug 17

I could sign in but couldn't skypeout.
could anyone tell me when will it be resolved?

lesliechen1023 | Friday, Aug 17

By the way when your website fails you can move it to another server, when your email fails you can use hotmail or even good old fax for essential stuff. There are various easy ways to work around problems to those services. It's the people that have put all their eggs in the Skype basket that are now suffering. Voice comms are generally too important to a business to risk that.

inichol | Friday, Aug 17

It has been MORE than 24 hours for me here and I am NOT HAPPY. I really need to call one of the guys I work with to ask him a question (email isn't fast enough) but I was stupid enough to think that Skype was stable enough to be trusted so I'm stuck without a phone who knows how long.

pappydamonkey | Friday, Aug 17

Hi inichol,

I absolutely agree that those that have switched 100% to Skype and have no back up systems may be regretting their decision! But I still don't see it as being 'absolutely insane'.

Until now, it's been a fairly reliable service and for my part I have had as many problems with my landlines and mobile phone as Skype. No hang on - I have had LESS trouble with Skype's reliability. It's been around a while now. It's gone way beyond the early adopter stage and is generally perceived as being a stable platform.

I don't rely 100% on Skype but I *do* rely on it to a degree, as you say, as part of a wider comms strategy.

I produce corporate films for IT companies around the world. I'm a one man band that works with freelancers all over the world. That means I am away a lot. When ANY part of my comms fails - email, web, mobile, landline, voip, whatever - I suffer. Potentially I lose new business and credibility.

In my case Skype's failure yesterday is terribly disruptive because people that are trying to contact me don't know that they are calling a Skype-In number so they just get an unobtainable signal. Sure I can put something up on my website (I have, in fact) but not everyone gets my number from the website. All those business cards I gave out at that trade show last week? Guess what number? Same thing, of course, if your primary email fails. Going to Hotmail won't help there.

No problem with outgoing comms - I'm well covered there. It's incoming that's the problem - new customers, existing customers, suppliers, my bank! Aargh!

What would you have me do? Print business cards with "If this number is out of service please call this one. And if this email doesn't work, please try this one." Sorry but that just isn't painting a good picture for someone who might spend tens of thousands of pounds with me (ha! I wish!).

As far as compensation for the outage is concerned, I am SURE Skype will offer something to it's disgruntled user base by way of appeasement! Think what a huge blow to their credibility this is. How many businesses will now think twice before adopting Skype as ANY part of their comms strategy?

And all this at a time when the stock markets are already teetering on the brink!

ianstark | Friday, Aug 17

I think this has to do with yesterday's Microsoft update for XP. After rebooting Skype stopped connecting. Maybe this Microsoft "patch(es)" messed up the network string allocations. MySpace IM was out too unable to connect

Dear ianstark,

I was going to be more firm about this, I got worried just as you, but then realized there are more words in the English language that can be used besides swearing, so I don't have to worry about getting my post pulled.

If you use Skype for business, and this is your only line, you're obviously not using your head. How simple would it be to get a pay-by-minute cell phone for a couple of days? If you're that important and worry about credibility, put TWO LINES ON THE BUSINESS CARD!!! Honestly, why in the world would you attack inichol by implying that the only thing you could add to your business card is "if this line is down...". If that's the best you can think of, I can only imagine how boring your videos are to begin with. Just throwing this out here, but I'm pretty sure here that most people have MULTIPLE NUMBERS on business cards. Business, cell, fax, possibly a home phone line. If you lose customers over this, then you obviously haven't been in IT very long. Get a backup.

This is an eye-opener who use this program for communications. Servers fail, ISPs crash, and STUFF HAPPENS! Go on with life.

Having said all this, Skype should've also had a backup. However, coming down on them because you have no other alternative is a bit of an oxymoron. Think before you talk people.

Or for example change simply back the code to the code before change? I hope the person who knows the code gets back from vacation soon :)

Or is there something else people shouldn't know about?

Just by chance, say: Suppose that Skype has been hit by some type of Infection, and suppose Skype has stopped it in their system, before it got into my system? Then it is possible that I need to be thankful that Skype is doing their best to clean it out and maybe even repair stuff that has been damaged by said infection. I feel good not having an attack on my computer. I can wait until Skype is repaired and back online. Meantime, I have a lot more to do with my time than to be angry over something that I have no control.
Come on folks, be thankful for the fact that you do not have to clean infection out of your systems.

Thank Goodness for this BLOG!! I thought it was just me. Now I can relax and wait for SKYPE to resolve this connection issue. I'd like to comment on one other issue I noticed the last couple times I was connected. The other Skype user I was chatting with and myself could not see each other simultaneously. We had to take turns which was never the case before. I will also mention this was after we both updated to the latest version of SKYPE. I hope both issues get resolved.....Connection issue and Video issue. Other than that I really love this program and I always encouage my friends and family to do the same. I have a cousin in Italy who just told me a few days ago she was moved to tears when I called her house phone and she heard my voice. SKYPE is fantastic in keeping all of us connected and communicating. Don't let us down! I hope we can connect very soon!

Ok, I've just read all the comments on this pages. Man am I tried. I really hope the lads in skype aren't reading this. I work for an ISP and I know how hard it is to fix a priority one fault such as this. These efforts are made harder by people putting undue pressure on them.

I also think it's a bit of a cheek to talk about moving providers after the first outage in 2 years. I've worked for 2 landline companies in Ireland and can honestly say that is the best, and most reliable track record I've ever heard off

People who rely on internet based services should be aware that these servers are prown to outages, and that these outages can take time to troubleshoot and fix.

For those using skype, as I do, to talk to friend who are far away. It has been a bit of an inconvenience, however, a simple use of the landline in my house had me talking to my band buddies in Australia in no time.

Seriously lads, leave them alone. If you really need to complain, do it somewhere else and let the skype boys do their jobs. Oh and to the skype lads, cheers for the service thus far

Well an Update from Skype Management or Media relations would be really nice... it's over 24 hours now and my business depends on Skype conversations internationally.

I don't agree with all the "do gooder" comments. I'm sure that people are working hard to fix this issue however, I pay for a service and its not available. Whats going to happen when Skype users start clearing out their pre-paid accounts on mass. Ermm! that might just get things moving?

I still can't log in. Minneapolis. Comcast.

lordbuddylove | Friday, Aug 17

i have just one thing to ask the people who are angry with skype and also those who re being patient, how many of you would feel alot better if skype would just give us an update on whats going on and say something to the effect of we are sorry its been longer than predicted butwe are still having problems we hope to get it up and running as soon as possible, i would say we would be preety close to 100% of people being at least a little happier that they know that its still being worked on and getting closer to being back to normal, well hope you all get back online shortly and havent suffered too much.

tommy6000009 | Friday, Aug 17

I agree completely tommy

ritchie.stobie | Friday, Aug 17

Here is a News story from the New York Times:

Error in Skype’s Software Shuts Down Phone Service

By BRAD STONE
Published: August 17, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16 — The online telephone service Skype was not working for much of the day on Thursday, leaving its 220 million users, some of them small businesses that had given up their landlines, without a way to call colleagues, customers and friends.

Skype's Bad Day: Share Your Experience
Executives at Skype, a division of eBay that is based in Luxembourg, said its engineers worked throughout the day to bring the service back online. But they said that while they had pinpointed the source of the problem, they still did not know why it had resulted in a network failure, and they could not ensure that the service would be running smoothly again by Friday.

“There is a chance this could go on beyond tomorrow, but it’s our hope that it’s going to be resolved,” Kurt Sauer, Skype’s chief security officer, said. “What happened today was caused by a unique set of events, the genesis of which is not entirely understood.”

Skype allows its users to make calls over their computers. Calls to other Skype members are free. To make and receive calls to and from traditional telephones, users are charged below-market rates.

The Skype network uses a so-called peer-to-peer infrastructure, meaning that calls are routed through other users’ computers instead of a central hub. But it does have servers around the world, known as supernodes, that manage access to the network. A flaw in a crucial piece of software that connects users to these servers appears to have been the source of the problem.

Skype engineers said the flaw existed in every copy of the Skype software that had been downloaded since the service’s start in 2003.

Skype executives said they still did not know why the error, sitting dormant for four years, suddenly crashed the network. They cited problems with the Internet backbone in some parts of the world as a possible contributing factor.

In the community of devoted Skype users, the shutdown was met with a few conspiracy theories and a little frustration that a communication tool they had come to rely on was not available.

Phil Wolff, editor of the Skype Journal blog in Oakland, Calif., said he uses Skype to communicate with contributors in a half-dozen countries. “It’s just really awkward,” he said. “All of a sudden these channels of communication aren’t available anymore.”

Mr. Wolff and Mr. Sauer of Skype noted that the service had never had a major breakdown like this.

“We have a good track record about uptime,” Mr. Sauer said. “That doesn’t help people who were down today, but we are working every moment to recover from this issue and not to let it occur again. We want to get it fixed quickly and ensure that we are what we always said we were — a highly reliable, resistant network.”

versachi007 | Friday, Aug 17

People, your services are the very best, with an incredible up time, and I am thankful for that.

We appreciate all you do for us who enjoy your excellent service. In my case I am doubly thankful because it is free.

I will wait, do not worry.

miguelaluen | Friday, Aug 17

Gee Skype what happened to customer service? Not only does Skype not work but you don't try to communicate with your customers.....I really had to click on all the windows on the Skype site to find out, in a very obscure way, that the system was down. I feel like you guys are on Mars and we can't communicate with you. That's too bad. Maybe next time try to be a little more communicative with your customers. Believe it or not it does work!

sotiria.kollias | Friday, Aug 17

INDIA (Delhi).. There is still problem with Login to skype.. It work for few minute & again disturbance.........what is going on...?

anil.bmc | Friday, Aug 17

Good customer service is keeping clients posted of the issues and resolution. Great customer service is offering free SkypeOut minutes or discounts to those planning to renew service.

Something to consider as a little "damage control".

cindyrun2nld | Friday, Aug 17

Very frustrating, we have been using Skype for business. Back to Yahoo IM which we almost forgot existed, that until now!!! Few more days like this, we may not want to go back. It turns out that Yahoo IM works just fine, have not tried Google Talk though, any comments?

It's simple - give each of us a decent size wad of SkypeOut credit to compensate for the inconvenience (say USD$10 per subscriber), and we promise not to uninstall Skype. You have until 9am EST tomorrow.

[Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype.]
some????? the whole word have problems and it is for very very long already, more than 3 days.
its unimaginable, unallowable, the big dissaster for skype, for 3 days your engineers not even spoted the issue yet,you better close it down completely and dissapear.

lulonium | Friday, Aug 17

I'm sure that Skype owners should message all their users about problems that occur or may occur in Skype software. I'm fully confident that it's just a common courtesy to inform people who are utilizing this program...at least we should be aware of possible inconveniences...

anatolii186 | Friday, Aug 17

I see 5.8 million users online now. It was quite entertaining to read the posts and complaints. Everybody should have a backup plan. Unfortunately computers, networks and information technology is not 100% reliable. Actually what is 100% reliable??? Sometimes the problem is not so obvious. I'm sure a lot of people at Skype were working hard for the last two days to fix the problem and I'm sure they will have a better way to handle such problems in the future.

Thank you Skype employees!!!

ckyuss | Friday, Aug 17

Now it seems ok

Thank you guys

jaime.diaz3 | Friday, Aug 17

I've been trying to be positive about all this but the lack of updates is inexcusable.

bellaccox | Saturday, Aug 18

Florida - USA . Working fine now!

gem7681 | Saturday, Aug 18

Unfortunately, most of my contacts still see me off line - and I see them off line.
Another problem: one of my contacts decided to conference me with another one - who cannot contact me. The conference host could hear both of us, while we could hear only conference host. Please, check this "bug."
Yesterday, I saw friend of mine online, but couldn't call him. Then, I sent him a file, and then we could call each other.
Hope this information will be useful for debugging.
Thank you for serving us!!! You are great guys, and Skype is one of the greatest things on the Internet. Shit happens with anybody, but we still love Skype!

outcompete | Saturday, Aug 18

ok in China now~~ love u skype geek
I would like to hug u if u were one of them.

justbelieve008 | Saturday, Aug 18

note to crazybigbillyknob:

I had written a nice meaty reply which beatifully discredited pretty much everything you have said. It was a work of art.

Annoyingly we just had a power cut in our area which meant that it's all lost and to be honest I have more important things to do than explain to you why you are so misinformed, why you should take the time to read other peoples posts properly before commenting on them, and generally why your comments demonstrate an arrogance and righteousness usually reserved for the immature twenty-something that's been in IT for a couple of years, has a half baked opinion on everything and insists on telling you about it at the bar after a trade show. You know, the kind of kid you just want to punch so they shut up and go away.

But I don't have time.

The only point I really want to bother retyping is that it is unbelievably arrogant of you to think you can chastise people for not understanding why a backup is important. Not everyone is as IT savvy as you lead us to believe you are. The sales blurb on any software or hardware rarely, if ever, says "oh, by the way, because this product is actually a bit flaky you need to make sure you have something else you can use when ours breaks".

People need to be educated, not beaten up by people like your good self when the service they trust AND PAY FOR falls over.

Oh one other thing,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymoron

It's the definition of the word oxymoron and how to correctly use it.

To paraphrase you 'think before you use big words, people'.

ianstark | Saturday, Aug 18

this is the most entertaining site I have come across in years! If skype didnt go down it would not have brought all you good people together.

Hi,
it looks as if I have been chosen to go through the same problem.
I can not connect to skipe for the past week, and feel very sad because I can not contact any one to resolve this. I sent you a letter and got no reply.
I was hoping to pay for skipe line and new mobile phone, but how can I do that if you do not let me contact you?
I have a Mac and was wondering if I could find out when will I be able to use skipe again?
Yours sincerely
Paula
