The latest on the Skype sign-on issue
By
Villu Arak on August 16, 2007 in News, Events, Milestones.
Hello everyone,
Apologies for the delay, but we can now update you on the Skype sign-on issue. As we continue to work hard at resolving the problem, we wanted to dispel some of the concerns that you may have. The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber attack. We love our customers too much to let that happen. This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network.
Rest assured that everyone at Skype is working around the clock — from Tallinn to Luxembourg to San Jose — to resume normal service as quickly as possible.

How about rolling the code back to yesterdays version.
dmshiels | Thursday, Aug 16
Is there a "Skype basics" guide out there somewhere, optimally in a PDF that's printable? Thanks!
gberger2007 | Thursday, Aug 16
This is really irritating man.
Are we all going to be credited for the one day we have lost, specially those of us that rely on this for business and international calls on a daily basis.
SKYPE SHOULD GIVE US ALL A DAY OF FREE CALL TO MAKE IT UP FOR THIS MESS THEY HAVE CREATED.
Sounds fair enough for me.
What do you have to say about that MR . Villu Arak
Waiting for your reply.
benmokay001 | Thursday, Aug 16
And please Villu Arak reply to my concern which I am sure most users share the same feeling:
SKYPE SHOULD GIVE US ALL A DAY OF FREE CALL TO MAKE IT UP FOR THIS MESS THEY HAVE CREATED.

pemmaraju2005 | Thursday, Aug 16

daniela.vujacic | Thursday, Aug 16
I have enjoyed using Skype to speak with friends relatives around the world for virtually nothing. Thanks for nearly 4 years of great service without ANY problems and good luck getting us all connected again soon!
rachelpedraza | Thursday, Aug 16
The skype connection was fine in Qatar yesterday. But all day today, it is trying to connect, no success yet! SO, from all the posts to the blog, Villu Arak et al., I gather it is because of the update and maintenance carried out yesterday!!! Wow, Skype providers, this speaks volumes of your efficiency/deficiency/or what??!
vvak2006 | Thursday, Aug 16
Hurry it up! This is bad for business!!
mrsdurff | Thursday, Aug 16
I have enjoyed speaking to my family and friends all over the world using skype for the past eight months! I join all those eagerly waiting for this connectivity issue to be resolved asap!!
vvak2006 | Thursday, Aug 16
This should of never happen! Never! Why don't you guys take out what you put in gets us back online. And test out the software before sometime else happen like all of us gets our phone book deleted because of another mess up!!!
eddiegetdownortiz | Thursday, Aug 16
Please, please try to resolve this system glitch soon. My business relies so much on Skype voice calls. We are losing business connections every hour if skype isn't availabe. I have faith in your efforts to resolve this. Thank you.
robbyrose44 | Thursday, Aug 16
Sorry to learn about this glitch. I have enjoyed skype so much the last two years talking to my friends and family all over the world. I do hope you will be up and running soon again.
Have you guys checked with the US Homeland Security Office yet? I would not be surprised that with their recently legalized power they were trying to get into the system and messed it up as they messed up so many things in this world. I remember I had a lot of problems with regular phone connections to the US when they first started to tap in after 9/11. Damn bastards.
hubertrg | Thursday, Aug 16
Hi everyone:
As a user of the Skype too, I want it working again. But I know that this people are working hardly to get back the systems online, so give them a break and let do it their job. ¿Okay?
Less complaints and more help. Or take it easy. This is a free service for the most of us. They know that we depend on this software to contact with our families and friends around the world, but when there's a problem, they have to be sure that problem never appear again.
ciberhamlet | Thursday, Aug 16
Stop this stupid complains and try to enjoy your night, if skype is the only thing you have in life then you have a very bad life.
And to Eddy this here ( your words):
"This should of never happen! Never! Why don't you guys take out what you put in gets us back online. And test out the software before sometime else happen like all of us gets our phone book deleted because of another mess up!!!" this only shows that you dont have any notice of programming.
So stay quite and incase of all the stuppid messages that read here give at least one word of support to the people of skype they really deserve that for all the good years of work that they where given and give for sure in the future.
And to the stuppid business people I say this. I have alreaddy for years a business and now almost 5 years working with skype for my business this way i saved lots of money in comunications, so to day i was surpriced that i not could connect the only time that I was losing was restarting my system, it was the same so i get back to telephone and email and didn't lose one dollar.
I will be very happy when skype is back in town, but want to give the people from skype the time resolve this.
SKYPE THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU GIVE US AL THIS YEARS.
GOODLUCK BOYS AND GIRLS

Hi there,
This is a crisis for international calling, some of us have purchased skype out credit which we depend on working, today was a necessary day for my international calls and I could not get through. Seriously requesting a 5E credit on my account!
djgeoz | Thursday, Aug 16
Just Open Source the code and give us a better product!
zekusso | Thursday, Aug 16
Hello all,
Let me remind those of you who bash Skype for their temporary technological failure that stuff happens. Welcome to the age of technology, where one algorithm can bork up the entire system, worldwide. You accepted that possibility as soon as you turned to Skype for international business solutions, or used it to keep in touch with your friends and family. So, keep your pants on, chill out, and wait for Skype to fix the problem. Your criticisms do not accelerate the fix.
drnick273 | Thursday, Aug 16
I had to plan a flight today with some one in the U.K. this was not very easy sending text messages back and forth on our mobile phones. This problem needs to be fixed soon
puppetpallmich | Thursday, Aug 16
Well, you people at Skype, you gave the whole world a most wonderful product. I trust, you will work this one out soon. Keep up the good work!
hubertrg | Thursday, Aug 16
I agree with Hugo van R and Dr Nick. Give the guys at Skype a chance to fix what is normally a reliable service. Skype is a superb alternative to mainstream conventional voice services. Accept it as such. I do not notice that anyone is complaining about meeting the terms of their contract here. If you want a business class, mission-critical service pay the money for one! If not, use Skype when you can, save a fortune doing it and use a fraction of the money you save to pay for one bad day every year or so.
Enjoy your day and lower your blood pressure!

This is very bad.. I have a SkypeIN number and of course all calls are diverted to voicemail. This is not nice.
I can't divert my incoming calls either!!!
Puhleeeze, fix this. I understand that they may be outages, but hey, 24 hours is more than enough for a bunch of people working 24x7 to fix the issue.

Hey everyone - Skype is the best free utility to come around in a long time. Let's just voice our gratitude and lay off the criticism. The Internet seems to have spoiled us into thinking that everything should be free. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Someone has to pay for these things. As for the bugs, show me a piece of software that doesn't have a bug in it! Yes they're out there but very few and far between. Relax and enjoy the silence
olevsm | Friday, Aug 17
Hi folks, hello Skype Team,
I'm with you. As a software developer, I can realize what means being there and debug and patch quickly; I know how does it feel. Instead of hoping Skype can be back soon, I hope people can be just a little bit comprensive and confident.
Just to share this thought. Because we are on “Share Skype”, isn't it?
taniele1984 | Friday, Aug 17
Hello, i want to give you my suggestion to try resolving the problem:
1) It's a big problem when a software with millions of users online can have network problems & the users cant communicate anymore.
2) I suggest to maintain for the skype clients a basic network to stay in communication. (without audio/video service or any other service, a sort of emergency mode).
So when a problem appears the users can continue communicating with the Emergency Mode in the while.
I know you are developing many services to make Skype the best software to communicate with the world but you MUST always consider the users are very important and the support must be always the best.
I hope you'll accept my suggestion (if it's technically possible).
Goodbye.

Working now... nice job, Skype team.
Problem solved ;D
drnick273 | Friday, Aug 17
Not working now... you can do it, Skype team.
Problem not solved yet...
clown.boy | Friday, Aug 17
To some of the commenters above: Why shouldn't we expect Skype to work 24/7? Should we not be upset when something we use and depend on stops working - is that not the reaction of a loyal user? Do you imply that it's just toy software?
temp90919293 | Friday, Aug 17
To everyone complaining about the unreliability, or incompetence of the Skype staff, or whatever it is you may be complaining about, 12-24 hours isn't a bad deal for a large service.
Our phone service went out a while back, which included our internet connection, it took AT&T a week to even get someone out here, and it took them at least two more weeks to figure out the problem and fix it. That's over 500 hours, so 12-24 hours is tolerable, I just use AIM in the meantime.
Been a Skype user for quite some time now, never had any problems before, doubt I will have many in the future, keep up the good work!

And a reply to olevsm.. I have given hundreds of dollars to Skype in the past year... so I know the painfull way it's not free...
kimmietherockstar | Friday, Aug 17
the system was back again for me just now, talked for 20 min without interruption. thanks, you people at Skype!!!
hubertrg | Friday, Aug 17
We have all benefited from Skype's excellent product for many years - thank you Skype! Even though I have, for the last 2 years, eliminated all other IMs, today I simply had to restart my Trillian and all was well - and when a voice call was needed - the old stand-by - Yahoo! worked just as well... So what is the noise all about? We have so many options that when the best/preferred one becomes momentarily unavailable it is hardly necessary to make it seem like the end of the world. Oh, and by the way - if you are running your business entirely on VoIP - get a life - excuse me - LINE
Last thought - companies taken over by eBay seem to loose their ability to deploy software updates seamlessly - didn't something similar happen at PayPal not so long ago?
dejannenov | Friday, Aug 17
I totally agree that skype should credit its customers for at least a week since that is how long i ave been trying to coneect!

Hi dear Skype,
I am certain that you are very busy working on it. I am using skype for many years now and I hope you'll fix it asap. To everyone else who is using skype for business: you shoud always have a backup like a real phone or be patient in a world where things are never 100% perfect. Be patient. There is more in life then only skype isn't it?
God bless you all....
