Skype booming in North America
By
Peter Parkes on September 28, 2007 in News, events, milestones.
On September 22nd, 2007, Skype reached its 20 millionth registered user in North America, doubling from 10 million registered users in just over the last 12 months.
Or think about it this way — nearly 10 percent of the more than 232 million Internet users in North America have now downloaded and tried out Skype.
Three other facts about ten percent, because it's Friday:
- We don't actually use just 10% of our brains, despite popular mythology
- According to Google, 10% of websites are dangerous
- In most parts of Europe, a 10% tip in a restaurant is a way of showing appreciation, believe it or not...

20 million registered users; it would be more interesting to know how many of those users are active. What about the rest of the world. i say this because if half of those users were active, i would see the total number of people using Skype at least reach 10million once in a while.
Because Skype is more widely used outside the US. But the most I have seen is just above 8 million simultaneous users. And im online very often and for long periods.
i think Skype is not growing as it was a few year back. Because with this doubling in registered users there should be a bigger impact on the number of simultaneous users. I register with Skype in 2003.

KerryGrante is right! I am always surprised why Skype uses "registered users" instead of the correct definition "registered user ACCOUNTS". But this is a marketing trick!
By the way, there are often more then 9.5 million simultaneous users online, and we will probably reach for the first time 10 million concurrent users online next week or the week after (watch your Skype client on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday around 16h Central European Time (CET) or 14h GMT.

Hey Peter,
Congratulations on reaching this milestone in North America.
When is caller ID going to work in the US? A lot of folks (including myself) are desperate for this feature (http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2007/05/caller_identification_for_skyp.html)
Please, please, please let us know when you intend to rollout this feature!

Whats the deal with Unlimited calling out in North America. I tried to sign up but it looks like it has been pulled? Any news?

I tried to use the support request form, but it wouldn't work, so here I am. I've been using Skype on my laptop connected to the current Wi-fi to cable modem setup for the past two weeks with no problems. Suddenly I was logged out of Skype overnight two days ago, and I can't log back in. Here's what I've done to try and fix the problem.
1. Follow the suggestions in the knowledge base on "being unable to log in."
2. Reboot router.
3. Reinstall Skype.
4. Reboot computer.
5. Reinstall Skype, then reboot router.
6. Change password - just in case.
7. Download Skype to a desktop on the same cable modem, but minus the Wi-fi. Works great!
8. Still no luck with the laptop.
9. Reinstall Skype one more time.
No luck, no love, no Skype.
Please help! I stay in contact with my clients, coworkers and other associates through Skype. I'm screwed without Skype.

I've been using skype as my regular phone service. You can't beat it, for under 8 dollars a month you can have unlimited north American and Canadian calling. But the best value is, in this order: skype unlimited, skype pro, and then skypein. Thats how you get the most for your money, trust me, I know.I work for a communications company and yet I use skype instead. that should say something.

baffin69 | Thursday, Oct 11
If skype is booming in North America when is CANADA going to get SKYPE IN? LAST TIME I LOOKED Canada is part of North America...........
baffin69 | Thursday, Oct 11
unlimited calls for canada/usa. Signed up on Oct 11, credit card charge approved, received info re invoice, received info re order #, received notification that everything had been approved and I could use the service. everytime I try I get an error message telling me that i have to buy SKYPE CREDIT. Their customer service is a joke ( I think that they employ only one person ) the way things are going my subscription will run out before this thing ever gets to work.
carbaxca | Friday, Oct 12
carbaxca, what i would do is just buy 10.00 credit. that will not hurt. and then check to see if the credit goes down after making calls to the unlimited areas.(USA and Canada) thats better to do than making your subscription fade away.

If I subscribe to Skype in and Skype out, can I make and receive local telephone calls? If I use Skype phone, will it work with cell service as well as Wifi?

Why does nobody answer with information on Skype-in numbers in Canada?
ready4studios | Monday, Mar 10
I originally thought the main monopoly communication companies were the only ones carrying online numbers in Canada, but there are other ones such as vbuzzer etc, so why is it that skype does not have any skype-in numbers in Canada? How much longer before we get any numbers for Canada? Is skype actually working on getting numbers? What's the lengthy wait? Should we start looking else where? I love skype. Don't let us down.

I am another Canadian (Vancouver) hoping for some kind on answer about SkypeIn.
When will it come to Canada?
If there is an issue with the landline companies, let us know and we can lobby on your behalf. We'd appreciate knowing why you aren't offering Canadian SkypeIn yet.

Hello, I'm another Canadian skype user, and have also been waiting for a Canadian SkypeIn number. I would really like to get an answer as to why this hasn't happened yet (is it our laws or is it skype?) I would as like to know any alternatives?

Just adding to list of ppl who are wondering about Canadian Skype in number...any answers yet?
crystal.ky.lee | Thursday, Apr 9
I also want to add to the growing list of Skype customers looking for a number in Canada - Edmonton Alberta to be precice. I am convinced that the problem is Canada's protectionist policies which are quite strong in telecoms. It's interesting though that nobody from the Canadian government and nobody from Skype will provide any information.
Hopefully Shaw will provide a way of opening up to competition then Canadians might have a fair deal such as free to receive calls on cell phones like the rest of the developed world.
