Tweaking and refining Skype on mobile devices

By My status Peter Parkes on December 9, 2008 in Skype Beta and new releases.

Our mobile team have been hard at work on two of our core mobile products, tweaking and refining them to iron out any creases and make life just that little bit easier for those of you who use them.

Skype for Windows Mobile on HTC: Contact ListSkype for Windows Mobile

Based on feedback from you guys, our Mobile team have overhauled Skype for Windows Mobile and released Beta 2.5. It features improved sound quality, better stability and a more familiar user interface. Download it now and give it a whirl. Update: We’ve released the gold version of Skype 2.5 for Windows Mobile.

Lite version of Skype for Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG mobile phones

We’ve added support for another batch of phones with this release, in addition to fixing the odd sneaky bug.

In addition to new downloads for the 80 phones we already support, you can now download a lite version of Skype for the following devices:

LG KE770, CU515, CU575 Trax, CU720 Shine
Nokia N96, N75, E71, E62, 6555, 6085
Samsung A717, T639, A737
SonyEricsson T700, T650, G502, W902, W380, W350, TM506, G700, G900, K770, Z750a, Z525a, Z310a, S500

You can check compatibility with your handset on the download page.

As always, we’re keen to hear your feedback. It’s an essential part of our development process, so please let us know how we can make Skype for Windows Mobile and the lite version for other devices even better.

You're ignoring the elephant in the room...what about an iPhone app?

steve1999_ca | Wednesday, Dec 10

What r u doing here if u have an iPhone?
Don't u know that following the developmnet agreement of the iPhone, there cannot be propietary technology on its software, so skype will NEVER go on an iPhone. Think better next time u buy a phone :)

wonderiuy | Wednesday, Dec 10

What about skype for symbian mobile phones that will use wlan for real voip insted of using local call to connect to skype. I’m thinking about something like fring that I ‘m now using with my skype account on nokia e61i. But with fing there are some limitations like voice mail is not working you cannot serch for new users. Are you thinking about something like that??

pkokot76 | Thursday, Dec 11

No doubt, iphone app required!

prophecy_ca | Thursday, Dec 11

How about Blackberry support?
Current third-party implementations leave much to be desired.

Thank you

processmapping | Saturday, Dec 20

I have an HTC Tytn11 also known at the Tilt in US .. it is unlocked and I purchased it in Hong Kong .. I recently updated to Windows Mobile 6.1 through ATT website but I use Tmobile as my provider.... I think I have used SKYPE in the past on 3G in Tokyo but now it does not work... it tells me that I am not allowed to use SKYPE with a mobile connection ... that I need to reconfigure my connection to Wifi to use it .... can someone help me correct this or is it only possible to use SKYPE on WiFi?? Is it something from ATT that is blocking my use of skype with a mobile connection and how can I change that?? I just downloaded again Skype for winodows mobile 2.5 ... anyone that can help -- thanks

I've been using skype on my Windows Mobile a ton and I'm very glad there's a version of it. However, I'm always clicking on the wrong things because the icons are so small. It would be great if the tabs for switching between "contacts" and "chats" were larger. It would also be great if the listing of the contacts and chats could be larger as well. Even on the HTC Touch Pro, these screens are pretty small and my finger isn't shrinking down anytime soon. Since active/most-recent chats show up on the top of the list, I don't mind if I have to scroll down for something old. I would just like to feel like I can correctly get to the thing I want when I touch something in the app.

@ mbuettell - sorry it's taken a while to respond. Please check your settings (go to Menu > Settings > Connection Method) and confirm that you've enabled 3G data access.

Also, check to see if you're able to browse the web using 3G.

If you aren't, it sounds like your current mobile provider is blocking access over 3G, unfortunately. It should work absolutely fine using WiFi though.

peterparkes | Tuesday, Jan 6

Please add video to the Nokia n800. I realize it's bad, but I would use Skype as a phone much more if that were added.

jlodman | Thursday, Jan 8

OK I install Skype mobile on my Nokia N95 8g
I can send text messages but I can not do voicecalls
Why?

claespierre | Thursday, Jan 29

Yeah, really curious about that too. I installed the E71 version on my E66 and it 'works'. Like the poster above I can only do chatting but no calls. I normally use Skype to make video calls with my family. How can I make a video call from the swimming pool on the other side of the world without 3G but with wifi? It would be absolutely great if this would be possible!

quelque | Saturday, Jan 31

I just found this little add on for my new E71.
I have installed it and the Chat option works just fine.
I find no option to make a call.

Am I missing something or how does it work?

fiero1fan | Friday, Feb 13

I have the same problem with you guys. I can't make a skype to anyone on my list. Is there anything we can do?

sarah.shiwei.chen | Saturday, Feb 21

@fiero1fan @sarah.shiwei.chen calling is only available in selected countries, I'm afraid...

peterparkes | Wednesday, Feb 25

hi guys, i have the same problem i have e71, i can chat but no voice calls, why?? is there something we r missing or the country where i am is not supported, cuz i chose Other ??
please we need answers!!

aradawy | Saturday, Mar 7

@peterparks, now that is real helpful. GERMANY is on the available list!!
Next answer??

fiero1fan | Sunday, Mar 22

I have a Nokia N96. Sounds like my issues are similar to those with an E71. My installation appeared to go fine. My new Skype name for WiFi via the N96 shows up as a valid Skype number if I look at it from another Skype user, but I cannot call to it or make calls from it. Calls to it surface on my office landline phone number, which is teh number I entered against the new Skype name, but that is not where I want Skype calls going. Go figure!

I noticed that when I attempted to make calls from it, it showed dialling to a +612800xxxxx number, which is confusing. The country code is OK (I am in Australia), but I cannot fathom why it is trying to call in that manner, as I am connecting via WiFi.

I suspect this is very buggy (or very, very Beta), and Skype needs to get some quality info out there about this app. I am quite annoyed as this functionaily is part of why I purchased the N96 in teh first place.

sturgdwdesk | Monday, Apr 6

@sturgdwdesk - the lite versions of Skype use the phone network to make calls, which is why you may see it dialling an Australian number. Similarly, inbound calls are routed to the number you choose in the app's settings.

peterparkes | Tuesday, Apr 7

hi, are you planning to add support for MOTORAZR2 V8 in Skype Lite version?
I see that MOTORAZR2 V9 is supported and I tried it on V8, but unfortunately one button (down arrow) is not working and as a result Skype cannot be used...

aleksejskalinins | Wednesday, May 20

When can we expect a Lite version that INCLUDES 3G support for VoIP calls?
I am allowed to utilize my 3G for VoIP, but Skype Lite simply doesn't support it.

rvieira | Wednesday, Jun 10

@rvieira that's what defines Skype Lite - products like Skype for Windows Mobile use the 3G network to make calls however.

peterparkes | Thursday, Jun 11

I just put the iPhone App on my 3GS phone. One thing that appears to be a big problem for me is that I can't seem to have a chime, song, or tone that tells me that a Skype Chat (text not voice) has arrived. I work in a building where the 3G network is non-existent. I was really hoping that Skype was the answer so I could get a Text Chat or a Skype-In call but I can't seem to get a tone for the text (I believe it works for a call).

Any help here?
