2 million Skype for iPhone downloads

By My status Peter Parkes on April 8, 2009 in Insight.

As promised, I’m back with an update – and it’s no surprise that we’ve stormed past the 2 million download milestone. This means an average rate of 2-3 downloads per second since the app first appeared on the 31st March.

Many of those downloading Skype for iPhone are new users, and, if you’re one of them, I’d like to offer you a special welcome: it’s good to have you on board. If you haven’t already done so, head to a WiFi zone and make your first call – I’m confident you’ll be impressed by the audio quality.

It’s this sort of thing which gets us really excited: Skype for iPhone isn’t just about giving existing users more flexibility, it’s about bringing high quality voice calls to millions of people around the world – many of whom have never used Skype before. And, of course, we haven’t forgotten about other mobile platforms either ;)

The Skype for iPhone team are already working tirelessly on the next release, which should be with you very soon. I’ll post here when it’s ready, and you should also see notifications on your device or in iTunes. In the meantime, keep that feedback coming in, and help us make Skype for iPhone even better.

Congratulations! skype for iphone is a masterpiece altough i've tested only a little bit. Users are quite happy about it! (OT: why doesn't skype release a 4.1 for windows making all of us happy again? http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=282151)

Found a bug in Skype. Basically whenever I call a contact, it does not automatically add the +1 in front of the number, causing the call to fail. Is there a way you could automatically do this for US numbers, or even allow us to adjust the setting based on the country? Thanks!

hiddennook | Wednesday, Apr 8

Very happy with the new Skype App!
It would be nice if the next version had conference calling and file transfer capabilities.

cipote7 | Wednesday, Apr 8

@hiddennook - thanks for spotting: we're aware of that, and I'm hopeful it'll be fixed in a forthcoming release.

@cipote7 you can participate in (but not start) conference calls with the current version, but thanks for the suggestions - we'll take those on board :)

Does the iPhone Skype client use SILK?

markallanson | Thursday, Apr 9

I think I'm going to love this but am having some basic problems. Hope you can help:
1) I can't figure out how to access my voicemail. I know there's a message in there because I left it as a test.

2) I see tips for accessing voicemail or adding a voicemail greeting but they say go to tools, options, preferences, events etc and I can't find those on my iPhone (nor PC for that matter).

3) I find it very difficult to find the information I'm seeking on the Skype site and the response time to support questions is very loooooong. (I know - the iPhone thing has overwhelmed the system.)

4) And this final one you may not be able to answer: If I forward all calls from my regular iPhone mobile number (through AT&T) to my Skype number, will I incur a cost from AT&T?

Thanks much. I feel better already just knowing someone will read this and try to help!

has anybody tried using this? How much battery life will it drain?

umairiqbal786 | Sunday, Apr 12

@markallanson not yet ;)

When can we expect a frontal camera on the iPhone to benefit from the video call feature provided by Skype?

dlecour | Tuesday, Apr 14

Great App, but as mentioned above, how do or can I retrieve voice mail?

monaghans5 | Monday, Apr 20

Any word on Skype for Android (e.g., HTC G1)?

veloearl | Monday, Apr 27

@veloearl it's available in the Android Market on your device :)

I love the new skype for iphone, I've used many times successfully to telephone numbers and people on skype.
The only annoyance is that the light of my iphone stays on all the time during the call, and it drains my battery. Is there a way to turn it off without ending the call.

jormash1 | Sunday, May 3

@peterparkes: True, but with the version currently available for the G1, you have to pay local airtime to make a Skype call. I want a version that works like the one for the iPhone, e.g., works over WiFi and doesn't charge local airtime.

I think that this App has potential to be amazing and very useful to me, however I am unable to use it as it is not available in the Canadian App store. Is there anyway that this could be made possible?

jgriffin46 | Friday, May 8

does anyone know if you can make skype calls from an iTouch (as opposed to an iPhone) if you plug a microphone into the headphone socket (and use the speaker) in a wifi zone? Thanks!

beverley.carter | Tuesday, May 12

@beverley.carter so long as it's a compatible microphone, yes :)

Any plans to release Skype for iPhone/iPod Touch into the Canadian App Store? When I click a link to find it in my app store, it says it is not available.

I use Skype as my main work instant messaging client and at first I seemed to be able to log in for iming only via 3g, but has that been disabled? I understand you can't use Skype voice on 3g but now whenever I try to log in I get no network connection even if I just want to use im. What's the deal with im only use?

syntheticzero | Sunday, May 31

@syntheticzero IM should work over 3G just fine - are you able to browse the web normally?

when i first downloaded Skype Software S.a.r.l - app for my ipod touch 2G i was thrilled with exitement, and called my friends even thou i didnt have a mic. But after downloading and installing 3.0 with hopes that my stereo BT-Headset would be a perfect accessory every little dream crashed down on me.
First thing: I can no longer even hear my friends when they pick up there phones not even the "skype test call"
Second thing: if my contacts have several telephone numbers it will only show 1 or less than that (just the skype-user call option)
If you like to use this app, i strongly recommend NOT upgrading to 3.0 if you are Ipod-user (i have tried to uninstall and download again to make sure it wasn't something wrong in the installation process)

Oh, and the app told me it wasn't compatible with my version of OS after installing 3.0 (maybe this is it :D)

Please have these little bugs fixed before future public release of new OS-Updates you programmers get these releases much faster than the regular user.

I am a happy user of skype on Ipod Touch 2G. The voice quality is excellent.

But I noticed that when I am in a call, the screen backlight stays up at full brightness all the time. This I think may be the main reason I experience very fast battery drain when I am on a skype call on the ipod.

I think there should be a way to lock the screen and shutdown the backlight when a call is going on.

Hi, I used my Iphone to call a computer overseas and was able to speak with my family. Is this considered phone to PC or PC to PC call and will At&T find a way to bill me for this?

I guess my question is is there a fee/charge for using my Iphone to call a computer overseas and talk to someone?

Please keep up the good work and keep it free, some of us need and appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

alibaharloo | Tuesday, Sep 8

@alibaharloo Skype-to-Skype calls on the iPhone are completely free - you will have to pay for any data you use if it's not included in your calling plan, however.

I am going to Mexico in 2 weeks with my iphone, my son is staying home with his iphone, both have skype installed. Will a call to his iphone in the US be free? Chat? I will be using wifi and turning off all roaming features. Do I need to buy credits from skype? why?

Thanx
Larry

larrydickman | Saturday, Oct 24

@larrydickman calls to other Skype users are free, no matter where you are, so no need to buy Skype Credit :)
