Skype for iPhone zooms past one million downloads
By
Peter Parkes on April 2, 2009 in Insight.
In less than two days, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded more than one million times – around six downloads every second.
This is a phenomenal performance, and we’re confident that it’s one of the fastest-downloaded iPhone apps ever. We’ll be back next week with an update, but for now, Skype on ![]()

Are you guys (and gals) going to allow us to use our nationwide/global subscriptions with the app? The fact that we have to use our own credit is a bummer, and is pushing me towards the competition (i.e. Google Voice).

Your existing subscriptions should work just fine with Skype for iPhone – if they aren’t, please let me know and I’ll investigate.

good news. update will include add sms, landscape?

Pity you can't make calls on a WiFi network with a VPN running -- as your app thinks it's then on a 3G network and disallows calling.

When I select a phone number to dial from my contact list it does not automatically place the +1 in front of the number, forcing me to dial the number manually. Is this a major oversight of the programming team?

I have installed Skype three times on my 3G iPhone. I can not hear the other party who says they CAN hear me. I also can not hear the ring on the other end. Is there some hidden config button I missed? Love to see this work. My address book transferred perfectly.

Judging by the tens of thousands of reviews on the App store, I would presume about 999,996 people promptly uninstalled it when they realised it rarely stays open for more than 15 seconds without crashing.
I gave up after numerous reinstalls and reboots... this has to be the buggiest package *ever* to make it t the app store.
Come on Skypettes - step up your game here.

I'm one of the more than 1 million who downloaded Skype for iPhone. Ok. It's a good app. But it's not worth it if you cannot use Skype in your 3G connection.
(in Portuguese) Em bom português, o Skype é maravilhoso no iPhone, mas a Apple tem de pressionar as operadoras para usar a rede 3G.

Skype on the iPhone was probably the first third-party app I knew would be killer, and I'm glad it's here. The only problem is it's missing the feature I so desperately wanted — SMS. Will this be added in a future release, I wonder? I certainly hope so!

These crashing errors are ridiculous. I haven't tried a call since I only have a iPod, but i IM'd with a friend in Poland for close to 15 minutes and there wasn't any crashing at all. Probably the jailbreak phone users that have put pRon applications on, that are having the issue.

Actually Skype works perfectly -- and man what great sound quality. You and everyone like you complaining about crashes has a JAILBROKEN iPhone. Sorry folks, but Skype isn't responsible for problems with your buggy phones. Uninstall the Jailbreak, load the latest iPhone firmware, and Skype will work like a dream. IMO Skype has no responsibility whatsoever testing or debugging your buggy, broken by design firmware.

Hi, thanks for the great app to iPhone 3G!
It really works good for me. I chat'ed my frriend in USA from the running train just in my hand's iPhone in Japan!
But I found that my Skype consumes inrediblly battery when "just installed". It's funny enough! but during just installed, my iPhone 3G battery consumed far faster (empty in a half day). Now I uninstalled it, then the battery consumption is resumed as normal. I understand the battery is consumed if I use Skype for chat/talk, but I didn't use Skype at that situations. My iPhone 3G is of cource, not "Jail broken".

@gbjerry ask the other person to call echo123 to test their sound settings - if that doesn't do the trick, please let me know

I've been using Skype on my iPhone for about a week now, and I am *very* happy with it. There are some problems that need to be addressed though, simple ones to start with:
1) Skype leaves my screen on for the entire call. I tried turning off the display with the "power button", but this puts the call on hold. I tried getting out of hold by pressing the button on my headphones, but that started playing my iPod instead!
I have found a workaround... I place the phone on the table and then put paper on top of the proximity sensor. This turns off the screen, the phone thinking it's close to my head. This is far from a good solution, however, and the interlocking problems above really need to be addressed!
2) Using contacts is sub-optimal. I have to go to Dial, select Contacts, find the name, click it, select a phone number and then press Dial. Yikes! This needs to be simplified somehow.
I would much rather have my Skype contacts automatically sync with my Contacts -- so that another "phone number" is entered into Contacts called "Skype" or something similar. Skype could then look for these to automatically sync with the list of Skype friends.
I'd also like a "dial on select" preference so that clicking on a phone number in Contacts enters it and hits dial in one step instead of two.
3) I have lots of Contacts, but only a few that I ever call. I fix this problem using Favorites in the Phone app. This also lets me pick a particular number for each person on the list, so that I don't have to select the correct one if they have several phones. This is extremely useful.
Skype desperately needs a Favorites.

Called contact in Geneva from Toronto. I could hear them clearly, but they could NOT hear me. Tried half a dozen times, IM worked great. After I hung up, message came up "cannot use skype on 3G". Peter, do you suggest disabling 3G before making skype calls? Is there another explanation why they could not hear me? I assume since I could hear and IM them, I was on wifi. I'm reluctant to purchase a subscription if this simple skype to skype call can't be made. (iphone is not jailbroken)
sharonmacjade | Saturday, Apr 11
@sharonmacjade it's possible that your WiFi signal wasn't strong enough; it's also possible that the problem was at their end. However, you shouldn't have seen the 3G message. Let me know if this problem persists.

I have a Canadian Rogers number/iphone. Why can't I find this app in the app store?
erratik101 | Friday, Apr 17
Re: Canadian Rogers iphone, it isn't patented for Canada, but if you look hard enough there's a work around.
Also, I was just curious at the details of functionality.
1) When I only have a 3G signal does that mean I will be able to chat but not place a call?
2) Does the app have to be loaded for me to receive any messages, or is just being signed in enough? (Eg. My email and txt messages get pushed so I know to check them, will this happen for Skype too?)
3) Do I only use up Skype credits when I dial a number?
hovito140 | Sunday, Apr 19
@hovito140
1) Yes
2) The app must be running for you to receive messages – see this article on push notifications in iPhone OS 3.0 for what might be possible in future
3) Yes - Skype-to-Skype calls are completely free
peterparkes | Monday, Apr 20
I read that "data usage costs apply for using Skype over 3G mobile networks". I know I can't make calls using the iPhone on 3G but does that mean that using Skype chat will cost me?
harryporker57 | Sunday, May 3
@harryporker57 if your iPhone contract includes unlimited data (i.e. if you can browse the web for free over 3G), then there will be no additional charges for using Skype instant messaging - hope that helps

I downloaded Skype on my iPhone and I can call landlines without the problem with excellent sound. But my problem is that I can't call other Skyoe contacts and make Skype to Skype calls. Every time I click on the contact, the Skype application closes. I can do it using Fring, but the sound is very bad so I stopped using it.
I did manage to receive Skype to Skype calls when I leave my Skpe application open.
Does anyone know how I can manage to make those Skype to Skype calls from my iPhone?

Love the iphone app.
Is there any plans to update the app ? Some of the renaming are not showing up on the iphone app contact list. It shows the user screen name instead of the renaming that was done via the program.

With the release of OS 3.0, and the advent of push notifications for iphone apps, when will Skype update the app to give us this feature? YM has blogged that they are now working on updating the YM app for iPhone and is hoping to release it soon. I'm crossing my fingers Skype is not far behind!
wandergirl914 | Thursday, Jun 18
Please do update soon for the OS 3.0!
As it is now, I can no longer use Skype on my ipod since transitioning to the new OS.
When will the update come, does anybody know?

insaintity | Saturday, Jun 27
So, nobody ever got back to me about the OS 3.0. issue. The update came about a week ago, and it's pretty great.
But nobody seems to be in the loop of communication.
I'm beginning to think that Skype is just a massive robot that cannot tell the difference between people and machines. I hope this is not so...
insaintity | Tuesday, Jul 7
@insaintity I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your earlier comments. The earlier version should have worked fine with OS 3.0 (except for displaying an error message) but I’m glad you like the update.

@sikosi
If the iphone skype app things you are not Wifi then redsn0n http://redsn0w.com/ your phone and add 3g unrestrictor, then skype will always thing you are wifi'ing it.
bobmutchseo | Tuesday, Aug 4
@erratik10 you can't get the iphone skype app in Canada, you have to open a new US account with out credit card and download it from there.
