Skype and Windows Vista update
By
Raul on December 12, 2007 in Skype for Windows.
There have been numerous questions about Skype and Windows Vista relations.
They used to have some occasional hiccups, but for a while now they've lived together in peace and harmony. In other words, Skype
3.6 for Windows is now certified to run on Windows Vista.
We'd like to remind to you that to get the best-possible experience, you should be running latest Windows updates and driver versions.

I have Windows Vista and when trying to use Skype, we can see each other and I can hear the other party but they cannot hear me. Any ideas on how to make this work?

I have Vista Business. While signed in to Skype last night, I did some other things and then attempted to make a call. It went through fine, but the other end could not hear me. What's up? I have downloaded Skype again, but no result.

I'm confused. I see any number of inquiries related to my problem, which is that the called party can't hear me, but I don't see any responses.
Can someone point me to the place to find solutions? Thanks.

I am only the messenger. Several savvy Skype users have told me it is Vista - not Skype. It has something to do with Vista's speech recognition software and Windows is supposed to release a patch soon to address this probelm due to user complaints. I do not know this firsthand but thought I'd pass along what I heard.

I have the same problem with Vista on my desktop. I can hear, but speaking is mute. I know the trouble does not come from the hardware. Any solution, beside complaining to Microsoft and wait for a patch?

Hi, I have a different problem: after I use skype for a long time (~ 1 hour) my hole notebook with vista breaks down. They say in order to protect the computer against severe damage they have to break it down. So please guys from skype if you are going to fix the problem with vista please fix this one too.
Thanks a lot, kepyks
And if you already know a solution I would appreciate to know.

I am trying to decide if I should buy a Vista computer. I need to use Skype, and have had success for 6 months, but crowding of the LAN has caused trouble, tearing up the speach. A new, faster computer should help this problem, but I need to know of Vista success with Skype. Any success out there?

I have the same problem where I can hear the caller, but they can't hear me. I have Vista Home Premium, too. Skype worked fine for me for about 9 months and suddenly, in January, this happened. Please share the solution if anyone finds it.
marybires | Thursday, Feb 7
I also have the issue with Vista Ultimate where skype 3.6 stuffs up the internet connection (via Billion router). Skype drops out as does browsing, but audio-streaming and sending/receiving email still works.
I turned skype off for five days -- guess what, no issues. And no issues on the same network with my wife's XP-Pro machine with skype 3.6
I can restore it by running ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, but frankly this is not good enough to have to do this several times a day.
It seems to be directly related to when chat messages are coming in and out.
Vista certified?
You've got to be kidding me.
Skype please DO something about this or I'm forced to go to msn messenger.

I have been running Skype 3.2 with windows VISTA home premium with a Lenovo/1.7G CeleronM laptop and Logitech USB Headset 350 over UMTS since May 2007. From about December 2007 the audio quality on Skype has deteriated to such an extent that it has become unusable. Following the advice on this web page, I first updated to Skype 3.6; I checked that all of the VISTA patches were up to date; I checked I had the latest driver for the Logitech headset for VISTA. After this Skype was still unusable!
When I use echo123 I get serve delay (>500mS) and the echoed voice message is unrecognisable. When I check the CPU load during running echo123 it is at 100%. I ran the test with only three applications running (SKYPE 3.6 (30-80%), Windows Task Manager (8%) and UMTS Session Manager (6%)).
The UMTS link speeds were 223Kbps on the down-link and 118Kbps on the up-link. It would seem to me that something has gone wrong with the Skype – VISTA audio inter-working since December 2007????
Would appreciate any advice as to what the problem may be.

I have used Skype for 3 years on Windows XP and it worked fine. Now I have Windows Vista Home Premium and have had the same problems that large numbers of users are having, that of "others can hear me but I cannot hear them." I have spent a month working on solving this and no answers come forth. Skype keeps telling me my mike is muted that is why no one can hear me. I cannot find a muted mike on the Windows Vista sound system. I am almost ready to throw in the towel, so to speak. I have really enjoyed Skype in the past.

I have exactly the same problem in that I cannot be heard when calling on Skype from a Vista Basic Dell laptop. I downloaded the latest version today but still no use. Neither is the microphone muted.
I cannot understand, in the face of so much commentary, how Skype can tell people that it now works fine with Vista - it does not.
stevec1205 | Wednesday, Feb 27
My version of this problem is similar to many of the above in that I can see the other party, they can see me, I can hear them, but they cannot hear me.
I have the additional problem that as soon as we get connected, Skype seems to feel the need to adjust all the volume sliders in the Vista Volume Mixer to zero, then mute everything, then set my audio output device to Digital Output Device/SPDIF instead of the normal Speakers. Three different ways of screwing up sound output and if I only find one or two of them, I still can't hear.
God only knows how many ways Skype is screwing with recording levels because I still haven't unscrewed my microphone situation.
So until I manually adjust everything back to what Skype should never have adjusted in the first place, I cannot hear the other party.
I can think of a solution for the Skype people to implement: If I have the "Let Skype Manage My Audio Settings" checkbox unchecked, DO NOT MANAGE MY AUDIO HARDWARE IN ANY WAY. Currently, the checkbox means NOTHING and Skype will do as it damned well pleases.
krenath | Saturday, Mar 1
I have had the problem of not hearing the ringing or person talking to me on Skype. The Geek Squad told me every call rec'd sends my volume immediately to 0 and was looking for Realtek output like for a media room, not the speakers for my laptop. The Geeks disabled Realtek output and allowed my speakers then to take over but I have to remember to turn up the volume immediately when a call is rec'd. He thought it was actually Skype software doing that and not the Vista. My daughter has the same laptop and doesn't have that problem. Hers works perfectly.

I downloaded skype March 15, 2008 on an acer computer, using microsoft explorer, and windows vista home premium. I cannot start a skypecast, go to certain pages on skype without getting a message saying you must have a 3.1 or higher. I have a 3.6, the newest version is already downloaded. If this is a problem with my driver, how do I find out what kind of driver I need and how to install this? (I know nothing about drivers, but I've read that you need to have a compatible driver as well as the 3.6 version)On top of that when I skyped my dad we thought it would be fun to play some of the games together, but when i click menu, play games.. I have nothing, and he has several games. We downloaded at the same time. Please somebody tell me what's going on, and how to fix this.

I have the same problem with my mic not workong + as descibed above: as soon as we get connected, Skype adjusted all the volume sliders in the Vista Volume Mixer to zero. Any news how to resolve?
alex.markov55 | Sunday, Mar 23
For me, Skype switches its settings from my USB headset to SPDIF for input and High definition audio device for output as soon as I connect to a call or sometimes even when I go to check and see if the saved settings are still correct. Skype then mutes all Windows sounds. I have the latest updates for my hardware (not Vista SP1) and the latest release of Skype (3.6.0.248). No help from support so far except for telling me "The latest version of Skype for Windows is certified for Windows Vista."

I have to chime in: my mother-in-law's brand new HP C2D with Vista Home Premium has the same behavior out of the box. The problem seems that Skype keeps reverting to Digital Audio Inputs and Outputs that are not in use despite setting audio routing as desired and saving the audio settings, and excting, re-logging, and rebooting... all suggestions that I've been reading on the forums, but have no effect.
I found a workaround by disabling all audio I/O EXCEPT for the ones I wanted Skype to use. Now Skype audio works fine, because it uses only what it can see. This is clearly not a long term solution and for so many to be posting about this here, on the forums (where there are multiple unanswered questions on the same topic), this is quite a common problem involving Skype and Vista. It seems to me, that the debug should start with why Skype is unable to make audio routing choices stick.

I have spent 2 days looking into this. I installed Skype 3.6.0.248 about 1 month ago and it worked fine (I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all updates & security patches). Then a few days ago people started saying that they couldn't hear me and I noticed the odious "muted" microphone message in Skype. I have been through all the recommended "Sounds and Audio Device Settings" (SADS) hoops recommended by Skype. The Windows Sound Recorder works fine. The Windows Speech Recognition tool in the Control Panel shows the microphone is working as expected. If I un-mute the microphone in the Playback part of the SADS I can hear my voice when I'm trying to talk on Skype. Even the Skype Tools/Options/Audio Settings shows the microphone input line moving extensively when I test the microphone. For whatever reason the problem appears to be exclusively with the Skype call program. About the only thing I can find that has changed recently on my system is that I picked up a Windows XP Security Patch for KB950749 -- a patch for msjet40.dll. This is most puzzling.

I have had Vista Home Premium for a month and Skype worked well most of the time. Now, there is no playback sound nor does recording work. Have tried every trick on the book following instructions (Skype help does not seem to have heard of Vista, since it doesn't give this option at all when taking the link from the Audio settings window...). Occasionally I have found even instructions for Vista settings - but following them doesn't help. My speaker and mic problems only occur with Skype - everything else works perfectly. Can this be due to some recent Vista Security Updates, too? Like yours with XP.

There are many questions regarding loss of the microphone after upgrading to Vista or Vista SP1 and yet I see no answers. What I'd like to know is what is Skype doing toaddress this issue. I'm using a Skype headset and had no issues prior to the Vista SP1 upgrade. Is Skype warning their customers about this issue or is it just getting buried until a solution is found?
I'm using Vista Business.

We have been using Skype for over a year with XP and never an issue. It has been great! We have just purchased a new computer with Vista. Aargh! Our issue appears to be less common. Every few calls on Skype, our computer shuts down - sometimes during ringing to a landline and sometimes during a call. This crashing only happens with Skype. We have the latest version of Skype and have had my computer vendor run through a diagnostic. Nothing wrong with anything. We are on an extended RV trip and Skype is my means of communication. Can anyone help?

I had the same problem. I went to device manager, microphones, and found the mic was muted. Still didn't work and again on the second try had to move the volume cursor upward. Then it worked. I also had problems with the other parties hearing me and had to change settings in skype audio from usb to default device. Hope this helps. Skype is interfering with many of the vista components including erasing phone numbers from sites. Dmcg

I see people have been posting questions on here since February and not one helpful answer from the Skype folks has been posted in reply. Why do people keep asking questions here? Wait, that's a question. OK, I'll add to the insanity with my own question: Skype runs fine on my Vista 32-bit machine, but I'm considering buying a laptop with Vista x64 installed...does anyone know if Skype is compatible with Vista 64-bit edition???

I have a problem calling a cell phone in Nicaragua. One of two things happen. Either I place the call and hear nothing, but after about thirty seconds I see that I am being charged for the call and a timer is running. However, I have not heard the call being placed(ringing) nor can I hear the party on the line. The other situation is that after I place the call I hear ringing, but after about 15 rings, it disconnects. In that instance, there are no charges shown for the call. I am running Vista basic.

I have Vista uptodate with upgrades. I have very good results on calls using a Realtek high definition desktop mike. Tried headsets & they are a pain much better with desktop mike & m/c speakers. Easy sit call & speak no wires aroubd your neck
Why do you not offer high quality desk top microphones .

Hello to all. We have Vista Basic on a Toshiba laptop. No success at getting Skype to work on it. Been all over Vista and Skype. It was easier to get it to work on Linux! See a lot of others having similar problems. See no answers here? Not very impressed with Vista.. Please check out Corkymoo.com.

Recently purchased a laptop with Windows Vista Home. Email is through Windows Mail. How do I get Skype 4.0 to import from the Windows Mail Contacts, like it used to do from Outlook Express and Outlook?
