Skype for Linux beta update - X marks the spot
By
Raul on February 6, 2008 in Skype for Linux Beta.
Today Skype has released a updated beta version of Skype 2.0 for Linux.
This release introduces some new features and numerous bug fixes, all of which are listed below.
Download it now or continue reading.
So why the name "X Marks the Spot"?
We thought 'X Marks the Spot' would be a fitting name as we introduced X11 overlay support - which means Video calls now work for those who don't have enough (or any) Xv ports available and as such couldn't get Video to work in previous Betas. X (X11) marks (draws on) the spot (the window area)
We would like to remind to you that Skype 2.0 for Linux is still in beta version, and thus we're still working hard to improve the client to a point that we're happy to call it gold/stable. Please let us know when you encounter any issues. You can discuss Skype for Linux on our forums or report issues on our public bug tracker Jira.

I'm actually hoping that native pulseaudio support (or through the pulseaudio ALSA interface, or even OSS) comes to Skype. Will it? Even Adobe has made Flash support Pulseaudio. I think it's high time Skype did too, considering Fedora 8 has moved to Pulseaudio, and Ubuntu Hardy will be using Pulseaudio when it's out.

Do u plan to make some HotKey controls. It is good when doing sth else to control skype with them.

I don't really know why but it seems that my Skype 2 beta on Ubuntu 7.10 stopped working properly... when I type a message it takes between 5 minutes and 15 minutes to actually send it... I am online on skype the whole time... the message first appears with a warning sign that the message hasn't been sent (the person is online and writing to me, but I also receive the messages very hard)... I am running a quite plain Gutsy with the latest kernels and Gnome 2.20.1. I have the Mac4Lin Theme and AWN running but that is actually all. The weird part is that in Windows it just works fine, so it's not a network problem. And Pidgin on Linux also works fine. But Skype now behaves weird and actually unusable. I have the latest Beta (2.0.43). Can someone please help me? Thank you.

I've just installed the latest version of Skype for Linux (EEEPC). I'm still unable to save changes to "away" and "not available" in options, even though this is mentioned in the bugfix list. Have I got the wrong version? (2.0.58.27)

Yesterday I had a problem with my sound, rhythmbox wouldn't work-- and flash 9 and skype did.
The problem evidently fixed itself. Time to install flash 10.
...and put skype away 'till a version comes out that Just Works with PulseAudio.
My apologies to the skype devs for being so dynamic as a software stack and making things difficult, but.. it's been a while since fedora and ubuntu switched, you'd think skype would have a newer client by now..
