I tried editing the registry entry and couldn't delete it. I am unable to reinstall Skype at this time. Nothing appears to work. Please help me.

i have the same problem, during installation of skype 4.0 : error code 1603 critical error, couldnt read from the file c:\windows\installer\skype.msi .

I am so upset. I tried to upgrade and i get the fatal error message 1603.
I cannot find any fixes that can help me yet. I have never had any trouble with the old version and now i can't even reinstall that. I have a pc with windows and vista. Please help as I am a new Grammy wanting to see my new grandson overseas! thanks.

skype 4.0 cannot be deleted .fatal error message 1603.I can't upgrade to the latest version.

I am also getting 1603 error code ,cannot access network location and then fatal error........... I have tried to uninstall and same message.......I have taken all *.skype files off and skype programme files and still canot deinstall or reinstall new or old version !!!! Help please

Installation of skype 4.0 failed ; code 1603 problem. I tried to uninstall skype 3.8 and then install the new one but that too failed. I removed all the skype data (folders) manually but still i cannot install skype again.

Please help me out. I cannot install any skype now.

First, I couldn't access the .msi (which was not in Windows\Installer until I copied it there), then I learn that some file "dig...[whatever]" can't be accessed from some .cab file. Oh, on an earlier request for support, I received nothing... except for a request for my opinion of the "help" you (didn't) send me. Can I just keep using the old version, which works fine? I don't use all the bells and whistles, but just chat with family across the state and call my elected officials in DC.

Same problem, Skype is messed up and can't install error I get is "fatal error message 1603" I've sent email to Skype with no response. I also can't delete 3.8, It can't find skype.msi.

When I start Skype 3.8, I started to get an error indicating "The files that skype needs to work cannot be find. Please download and reinstall skype to fix this problem.".

No matter how many times I tried to re-install, uninstall, re-install, etc., i am getting the same error.

Has anyone found an answer to this fatal error message 1603? Yesterday i downloaded Skype and everything was fine. This morning i receive this fatal error message and i cannot even delete Skype from my computer. What's up with that?

I tried to download the new version of Skype (the older version has been running great) but get a message: The installer has insufficient privleges to modify this file: C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Skype\Plugins\Local Cache\Categories\Business.png. If I click OK then I get the message Installing Skype failed, code 1603. Can I get Skype working again soon?

All of above. I have version 3.8.180 - failed code 1603. Have tried to delete skye.msi files and that didn't work either. I suppose I will just have to live with the version I have until there is a fix. Good luck all.

Same problem as everyone... can't reinstall Skype, can't uninstall it to reinstall... I have a great working quite new computer with Vista... Skype code just says 1603...

I then tried what some geeks above posted. I know computers well, and got nowhere using their "remedies", all the recommendations above are a waste of time, believe me.

Went to a party last nite ... surprise: everyone with Skype at the party has same exact problem at this local party of europeans living in US (a micro example of what is going on around the world currently with Skype perhaps)...

All said they get no phone answer to this problem from Skype, so are currently just spending money on the many various competitors until Skype finds the answer (including me, I have just credit carded funds to a new account at a Skype competitor)... I am sure Skype will soon post a remedy that works.

I don't want to name competitors, not fair to Skype who was really good till this ...perhaps a bug started by a competitor... must be costing Skype millions in revenue daily... I called Skype they so far have no answer to this strange problem... if they did they would post it here...

If the Skype folks are reading this, you really need to solve this one, it is costing you a lot of money by the hour.

After I posted the above comment (just above) I once again tried to download the latest "4.0 Hotfix", for the forth time, and tried some of the latest "remedies" ... all a waste of time... same error 1603...

I have seen so many similar comments regarding "error 1603" but no resolution from Skype. I am also trying to upgrade to Ver 4.0 but facing the same problem. What are we suppose to do now? Google everywhere for a solution but nothing seems to work. Shame on you Skype.

I have found the solution of 1603 Error.

Just download the new version SkypeSetup_4.0.0.150.exe or old but must be .msi
then rename the file to "skype.msi" and place it in c:/windows/installer/

Run the Setup again and Enjoy the new version!

I have the same problem. Due to my yahoo mail problem I have restored the system and somehow new and old versions mixed. I can't uninstall and install skype...do nothing and gives that code 1603 error????

I'm running windowsXP ver.5.1 service pack3 and skype3.8.0.188 without any problems.
When i try to upgrade to skype ver.4,I'm having problem error code 1603

i'm having the same problem as everyone else here. i can't install new version, and i removed the old version after it gave me the error
"important files are missing, please install new version of skype"

It´s unbelievable that after all this time Skype has not foudn a way of fizing this. People instal 4.0 and they get stuck. I am now completely unable to unstinstal 4, have it working or install any previous version!
I think Skype will loose for the competion with this terrible problem that exists now with the erroe 1603.
