[Fixed] Problem with the latest Skype 4.0 for Windows release
By
Raul on March 14, 2009 in Skype for Windows.
Unfortunately a previously unknown bug sneaked into Skype 4.0.0.215 for Windows, released this Wednesday, with it not including the Skype Extras Manager (which handles third party add-on applications for Skype).
To workaround this problem, download the full installer for Skype 4.0.0.215 for Windows.
We're sorry for any mischief the gremlins caused - we're working on the next release which will fix this problem.

Skype worked fine until I added an update and now my audio does not work with video..

I downloaded the latest version as you recommended, and I am still getting 1603 error.
Even before I tried to uninstall skype and download ver 4, skype stopped working on my vesta PC for no reason. When I started skype, it gave me an error indicating that skype cannot be started.
I deleted the registry and tried again, and nothing is stopping the 1603 error when I try to dowloand skype.

New to Skype also. Connecting two machines wireless to the same router at my uncle's. Actually tried two different dLink routers, a DI-624 and DIR-625. I can only see "incoming" video on one unit. I can see the local video on each respective PC. I'm using the new version of SKYPE and all drivers are up to date. Both machines are WIN XP Pro SP3, all up to date. Sound is good on both and so is the little video window. Took firewall down just in case. Any idea why I can't see the incoming video on both PC's? Oh yes, I tried a DIR-655 router at my house and everything worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have problem with version 4. 0 too, on my new lap top, windows xp. I 've normally instaled it, but the problem is allways that: skype can 't be connected! What I can do ? I normally use it on the other lap top on the same local area connection.

Did the full installer and still get the error message 1603. I like Skype. Let's get it right

I too have real problems with version 4. upgraded no problem. But call quality is dreadful long passages just cut, call drops and even a skype program crash.
Is this a generic problem? Whats the solution to go back to 3.8?
Don't like the user interface either - sometimes its really better not to fix what isn't broken!
So please now concentrate on what is - like the call quality!

My conversation friend in Czech Republik has a problem with Skype 4. It crashes sometimes immediately after beeing called, sometimes after several seconds, sometimes it even works. After the crash it shows the message :"Exception Elnvalid Pointer in module Skype.exe at 0000489D".
He uninstalled Skype and downloaded and installed it new (today, March 26.2009), but the result was the same.
What can he do to get the Skype 4 stable?
kofino1 | Thursday, Mar 26
I am also having great problems to install Skype after an update. Even put the hkey in the registry as the error says it couldn't find it, but that doesn't make any difference either. It would be nice if we would get a solution, not an answer that doesn't help.

Skype no longer runs on our computer. The audio would only work for a couple of seconds and then stopped. We uninstalled and tried to load Skype 4.0 but continually get a message that we can't connect to the skype server? It tries to redirect us to another server but we keep going round and round with no success! Do you plan on fixing this problem in the near future?

Hi,
I am just new to Skype only downloading it this weekend.
I have added contacts but when I try to have a video call with them, I can hear them but cannot see them. The screen is blank except a comment saying starting video which remained on the screen for the duration of my last conversation which lasted about 6 minutes. Does anybody have any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

I followed suggestions and downloaded new skype but still can't delete history. Your message saying this was fixed is a month old. What's up? Can I go back to old skype?

Hello,
I first updated Skype with version 4. Each time I wanted to open Skype, I add a little window popping-up telling me that I have to wait for Windows to find all necessary infornmation, etc. In the end, nothing happened, Skype doesn't open, just another little window popping-up to let me know there has been a fatal error in the installation of the program.
Then, I uninstall Skype from my computer (using Windows Vista .... we all love it, right (I'm being ironic here, of course)). I download the full installer for SKype, and exactly the same is happening.
The funny part is that on another PC, using Windows XP, there is no problem what so ever in using Skype 4.0 ...
So, my questions are:
Where or how can I find it?
1) is the problem more linked with Vista? (incompatible maybe he he, won't be surprised, I have the same issue with iTune with Vista, and on other PC, all is fine ....)
2) I can't find the older version of Skype to reinstall while waiting for the newest version to come out he he
Best of luck to you.
Have a wonderful day anyway.

My problems with the latest version started after I added an update for internet explorer. They are the same problems as everybody else has: unable to open, unable to uninstall or download new or even the fixed version. All the time I see the error code 1603. Please fix this problem asap because I love Skype and I use it a lot and this drives me totally crazy!

it would seem so elementary for most that the hyperlink on the download update screen that is supposed to show the bugs fixed in the latest update 4.0.0.216, would actually link to the page that shows the bugs. In the last two updates this has not been the case. It is such a waste of my time to have to use the search to look for it and never find it. I still haven't figured out what the updates and bugs fixed are. Honestly, Skype is getting very lax. The website is now (v. what is used to be) horribly poorly organized. Needs a full revamp. Shoddy.

In Version 4.0.0.224 (the newest version), I want to be able to delete history items as I was able to do in your previous Version 3.8.0.180. It appears that I'm not the only one who has had this problem as indicated by the info posted on March 18th--over a month ago (See copy of that info below and I totally agree.)

As someone said before, why fix something that works. Today I have installed Skype 4.0.0.226 and it is crap. Why dont they leave the old version until the programers come up with a new working version beats me, possibly they all worked previously for Microsoft??? New skype layout is crap, Skype help is useless, possibly they cutting costs in this recession and getting cheap programmers.!!!!!!!!!!!

As a new user I have just spent over an hour trying to figure out why the latest edition of Skype would not work for me and finally realised that to start you have to go to the Skype menu and choose Online Status and then select Online. I would have thought online Status would have been very inportant to have visible with a drop down selection box. I am a new user but already I found the colour/layout miserable

Upgrade to ver 226 is a disaster; persistent disk i/o error, and can't proceed. Running XP SP2 and latest Firefox. 2 Skype versions back worked fine, so why have Skype stuffed it up? and why hasn't tech support fixed a problem which has been driving customers nuts now for at least 10 days? Does tech support read any of this stuff?
don.stainsby | Sunday, May 10
Same problem as everyone... can't reinstall Skype, can't uninstall it to reinstall... I have a great working quite new computer with Vista... Skype code just says 1603...
I then tried what some geeks above posted. I know computers well, and got nowhere using their "remedies", all the recommendations above are a waste of time, believe me.
Went to a party last nite ... surprise: everyone with Skype at the party has same exact problem at this local party of europeans living in US (a micro example of what is going on around the world currently with Skype perhaps)...
All said they get no phone answer to this problem from Skype, so are currently just spending money on the many various competitors until Skype finds the answer (including me, I have just credit carded funds to a new account at a very good Skype competitor)... I am sure Skype will soon post a remedy that works.
I don't want to name competitors, not fair to Skype who was really good till this ...perhaps a bug started by a competitor... must be costing Skype millions in revenue daily... I called Skype they so far have no answer to this strange problem... if they did they would post it here...
If the Skype folks are reading this, you really need to solve this one, it is costing you a lot of money by the hour.
s3102724 | Sunday, May 10
After I posted the above comment (just above) I once again tried to download the latest "4.0 Hotfix", for the forth time, and tried some of the latest "remedies" ... all a waste of time... same error 1603...

Regarding my request from April 23, 2009, for a
solution, I decided to return to the OLDER
version of "Skype."
I kept my copy, but it appears that others may
use a link to it at the bottom of the following
"Skype" website page, and it may help others who
are still challenged, too:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windows/
The link is found at the end of "Skype's" statement:
"Accessibility features for people with
disabilities are not yet available in this
release. If you require them, we recommend
that you use the previous version of Skype.
Maybe we can help each other with solutions
until "Skype" can resolve these problems.
Chase
PS. This is regarding my post from April 23rd:
"In Version 4.0.0.224 (the newest version), I want to be able to delete history items as I was able to do in your previous Version 3.8.0.180. It appears that I'm not the only one who has had this problem as indicated by the info posted on March 18th--over a month ago....

chase4ever | Wednesday, May 13
NOTE: REGARDING MY PREVIOUS POST OF TODAY:
Before installing the older version of "Skype,"
be sure to uninstall ALL of the newer version
OR it will not work properly.
(I knew better but didn't uninstall everything
my first time.)
I used the "Add or Remove Programs" feature of
Windows, and when asked if I wanted to save my
history items, I indicated that I do--no problems
after that.
Hopefully, this will benefit someone else.

On this topic I have also posted in the Archives (april) under "skype 4 for win hotfix". Using oldapps.com, I first installed old ver 3.something over the top of 226. this worked fine, so i then shifted up to 4.0.0.xxx as per postbelow:-
[[Don from OZ again; Moved back up to 4.0.0.216 and that is working OK (so far); it's running on both a HP Pavilion laptop (XPpro SP2) and Dell GX280 desktop (same OS); i'm leaving it like that till we get to hear from the Skype techos that they even know there is still a prob with ver 226 re disk i/o error, and that they have got a hot fix. There are too many places where one might need to post to get something like this brought to their attention. No feedback (yet)]].
Having downloaded the install file, I unplugged the internet, closed running apps, and ran the install without uninstalling the ver 3 i had gone back to. Although i haven't done any hard testing, it appears to work just as well as it did previously. You might like to try doing the same in the interim.
