Sharing good, Free stuff even better!

By My status Ryan on October 23, 2006 in Tips and tricks.

As a GNU/Linux user, I love things that are free. There is even a saying and a song about it - “The Best thing, in life are free. do do do etc.” So the folks over at moo.com are giving away (for a short time) free minicards - which in they describe in marketing speak as: “Create unique designs, and share your Skype Name, email, blog, and vital statistics with friends and attractive strangers, in the real world”.

So lets rephrase that for the linux crowd: “Create opensource designs, and share your Skype Name, email, pgp public key, blog, uptime, and bogomips with friends (unless you’re a BOFH and have none) and any strangers that are 1337 enough, IRL”

So yeah, get your cards - hey they’re free! If you happen to meet your soul mate using these cards in a bar I want to hear about it!!

UPDATE: They’ve run out of the free mini cards, so this free offer is no longer valid.

Skype for Linux 1.3 Gold

By My status Ryan on October 4, 2006 in New betas and releases.

Download Skype for Linux 1.3 Gold now.

Thank you to all of you who downloaded it during beta and helped us to test and improve this version.

Cue the dancing penguins, update your repositories, and generally rejoice! As noted on Berkus’ site we have finally released Skype for Linux 1.3 Gold.

Although a long time coming, it was worth the wait. Improved sound quality and support for the ALSA sound system. Finding contacts has now been made easier with Quickfilter - all you need to do is start typing the first few letters in a contact’s name to see all the contacts that match your search immediately. For a full list of changes/fixes/features please consult our CHANGELOG

So please check out Skype for Linux 1.3 and call up all your friends to tell them how cool Skype is, and how you pronounce the word ‘Linux’.

Skype for Linux goes public

By My status Berkus on October 4, 2006 in New betas and releases.

We have finally put up the latest and the greatest and public and 1.3.

Named Skype for Linux 1.3.0.53 it sports an impressive change log with a lot of visual, usability and sound quality improvements.

There are still some audio problems (for some users, especially those on Ubuntu 6.06), and we will try to address them in further versions.

Go and grab yourself a copy.

Repositories for fc3, fc4, fc5 and debian should catch up soon, too. (Yes, you can put any of 3,4,5 instead of just 3 in the path for FC repositories).

Enjoy, and share your feedback! (Remember: Sharing is good!)

ps/ for Ubuntu 6.06 users - upgrade to 6.10, it will fix most of your audio problems.
