Skype 2.0 beta for Linux: the Great Revolution

By My status Ryan on November 7, 2007 in New betas and releases.

A great time is upon us. A time of change. A time of revolution.

In the past, we have struggled in a world of glass panes and fruits. Forbidden from seeing the world around us. Denied the possibility of showing who we are. But today, our eyes open. We're not afraid to see, and we're not afraid to show ourselves.

This is a time of excitement. And a time to share our happiness, our sadness, our anger and our love. For video has arrived to Skype for Linux.

skypelinux_video.png

This release is not just a revolution for us in Linux, but a revolution for the Skype world at large. No longer are we, the people of Linux, prevented from socialising in the same way as our peers.

So join us. By downloading Skype 2.0 beta for Linux today.

Read on developer.skype.com for more technical information about this release.

Nice, thanks. Does this version support high quality video like Windows 3.6 beta does?
Keep up the good work folks!

belegdol | Wednesday, Nov 7

woooooooow this sounds great- i'm downloading right away

polrus | Wednesday, Nov 7

Good Job!!!!!!

dariazzo | Wednesday, Nov 7

Dzięk! Thanks! Merci! Danke!...
=)
love U skype developers;)

adrian5632 | Wednesday, Nov 7

Great! Do you know what sort of video devices it supports (e.g., v4l, v4l2, ieee1394)?

Thanks so much!

gregory.oschwald | Wednesday, Nov 7

Wow. As much as I complained about Skype not having video on Linux (although I did most of that silently), as much would I like to say Thank You now, this is totally awesome!

THANK YOU!

bsander | Wednesday, Nov 7

belegdol: You can receive HQ video, but can't send it at this stage.

gregory: v4l and v4l2 are both supported (v4l is a little more unreliable for some cams, but works overall). ieee1394 is not directly supported, but if there is a v4l2 wrapper (which I think there is - don't quote me! :P - then this should work).

Andy.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 7

The ironic thing is that I was looking for a viable alternative that has video in Linux when I got this inexplicable urge to view the blog. :)

Thank you!

archivator | Wednesday, Nov 7

Thanks!!! Great job!

halaszvari | Wednesday, Nov 7

any news on sms support?

erikdalen | Wednesday, Nov 7

Please, make 64bit version of Skype. Webcam driver in 64bit systems not working in Skype (cause is 32bit still)

ilfirin_ms | Wednesday, Nov 7

I hate to double post but I'm really in a hurry and don't have the time to file a proper bug report.

I tested video calls with fglrx 8.40.4, gspca, and a Creative Live! Video IM camera.

The other party saw me just fine, but all I got was a white window. Also, I would appreciate some manual brightness/contrast/hue/white balance controls as right now it seems to do that automatically and it's not really working (spontaneous changes in brightness are particularly irritating).

All in all, a good start for a beta. Hope it gets fixed soon!

archivator | Wednesday, Nov 7

go go go go go go go g og og ogo go ggo gooooooooooood :)

uther-dul | Wednesday, Nov 7

A really great news! Now if you would only re-enable the groups in contact list, I would be satisfied :)

michalsc38678 | Wednesday, Nov 7

Oh my word. Well, I certainly didn't expect this so soon. And, while I still think this should have come a lot faster than it did, I'd like to sincerely thank the developers for getting this out.

Although, I'm not too keen on the wording "now even on Linux"! Ah well, trying it out now.

tgoose | Wednesday, Nov 7

Oh, is there any reason this doesn't hit the repos at the same time as it's available on the website? No big problem, but it leaves Skype behind practically everything else on my system if I have to manually download it.

tgoose | Wednesday, Nov 7

Thanks. It's working on Debian-Etch. Kernel 2.6.17.(custom) Webcam: Logitech-Sphere. Video device: pwc-v412

freeroute | Wednesday, Nov 7

Bug: In OpenSUSE 10.3 64bit the video starts in default size (smaller then video is) and the windows is not resise-able. Only workaround to see whole video is start fullscreen (which is on 16:10 monitor little funny)

ilfirin_ms | Wednesday, Nov 7

erikdalen: Not yet. However, there are third-party GUI tools to do this through the API. I'd recommend checking the forums.

archivator: This may be due to having 1 Xv port on your graphics card. We're looking into workarounds for this currently.

tgoose: Sorry about that - we hope to have a fix shortly. As this is a beta, it won't replace the current 1.4 Gold in repositories.

ilfirin_ms: This is due to a bug in Qt 4.3.1. It should be fine in 4.3.0 (and 4.2.x) and also in the later 4.3.2.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 7

andypoo: Thanks for reply. I'll be looking forward for that. Make the x86_64 version and I'll be fully happy ;-)

BTW. I see in 1.4 and 2.0beta is missing czech localisation, which was at 1.3 version. Could you make a labels and text in program in extra xml, txt,po etc. file? It would be fine.

Thank you

ilfirin_ms | Wednesday, Nov 7

ilfirin_ms: We bundle a blank/empty skype_en.ts file, which can be used as a template for Qt4's linguist utility (to make a new translation).

I don't believe we currently have anybody working on a Czech translation unfortunately.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 7

andypoo: I'll make it, if you wish. And what-about x64 version, is it in the plan?

ilfirin_ms | Wednesday, Nov 7

ilfirin_ms: No, to be honest, I think x64 version is a long way off. There need to be changes to the way Skype works underneath that affects all platforms I suspect to handle 64-bit, and this is simply not going to happen for a minority (64-bit users who won't install 32-bit libs) of a minority (64-bit users) of a minority (Linux users) at this time.

Skype is a complex application, more than just some basic UI on top of some text-based protocol. I think people really underestimate the scale and complexity of Skype's network structure.

Having said all that, I'm pretty sure 64-bit _will_ happen, but I wouldn't be expecting it in a short timeframe.

Andy.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 7

Any chance for Hebrew translation?
If you need, I can do it.

orduek | Wednesday, Nov 7

:P really happy to see this guys, thank you a lot!

eimaiosatanas | Wednesday, Nov 7

Not working for me, I am under fedora 7, my webcam (asus laptop with syntek cam) works well under camstream/ekiga but not with skype:
1. I can see the webcam of my friends : good
2. each time i try to send them my webcam the process fails without error message
3. I can't see my webcam image in the preference menu

I tried with another webcam (gspa driver) with the same results...
Keep it up
thanks

gyvesmeg | Wednesday, Nov 7

gyvesmeg: Could you jump over to our forums. We're running a fairly active thread there about the new release with relatively live support (when I'm awake). There's info there on setting up logs so we can see what's going on.

One thing to check is if you run xvinfo |less to see how many Xv ports you have available. If you only have one, then this could be why you're only getting 1-way video, however this doesn't explain the failure in Options dialog.

The logs will help me to see what's going on there. There are a few V4L related bugs at the moment (particularly with cams that can't capture at 320x240), but I'm looking into it as we speak.

Andy.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 7

Thanks Andy, I posted necessary info on the forum

gyvesmeg | Wednesday, Nov 7

Thank You so much for this. I have decided to buy a web cam to use this new feature. Can anyone recommend a cheap web cam that runs well in Linux and Skype? I have heard good things about Logitech, and know that they have worked well on Windows and Mac. No need for high quality video (my bandwidth isn't enough to use it really), and I'd like it under $50

dan_mazzei | Wednesday, Nov 7

What a great birthday present! Thanks Skype!

dorian_o | Thursday, Nov 8

Wwwwoooowwww! At last! I realy feel happy to read this news. Thanks to you! :D I will try it!

gajailaci | Thursday, Nov 8

Great news! Next question, which a lot of us over at Internet Tablet Talk are wondering about, is when we can expect video support for the Nokia Internet Tablet version?

michel.sylvan | Thursday, Nov 8

Finally! Thank you.

andrefcruz | Thursday, Nov 8

dan_mazzei: Logitech Quickcam Communicate S or STX should work fine.
QuickCam Pro 4000 is relatively good, too.

I'm on intel video hardware myself, so no any problems with Xv ports and stuff, most of the cameras just work out of the box.

berkus | Thursday, Nov 8

Dev team! Congratulations! I'm downloading as we speak to test! (Let's all poo-pooh BBC who clams there are only 400-600 linux users visiting their website)

andersja | Thursday, Nov 8

Hello
It doesn't work on debian Etch (kernel 2.6.18) with USB SPCA5XX camera Type Vimicro Zc301P:
In configuration>>video devices, i can find my webcam (Z-star Vimicro Zc301P on /dev/video0), but when I test it,i can't see my webcam image( it's totally black).
This camera works with Ekiga and Wengophone.
Never mind, this news sounds good for the future .Go on.

yanlot | Thursday, Nov 8

Why don't make a 64 bit version? Better an Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 32 and 64 bit version ;-) (for Ubuntu there's only the Feisty Fawn .deb and no 64 bit for any distro)
There are yet a lot of people that uses 64 bit version of Gutsy Gibbon that needs workaround to install Skype. However really good job, and thanks for all.

dariazzo | Thursday, Nov 8

Next target:
sms & full skypecast support (riht now we can connect to skypecasts if we know the fake phone number, but the website does'nt allow us to connect directly)

asca_edom | Thursday, Nov 8

@andypoo, you're right, xvinfo says I've got only 1 Xv port.

Surprisingly, though, other programs seem to work with PIP in Xv mode just fine. I think they use the master-slave Xv architecture to somehow use only one port. On the other hand, I've never used Xvideo in any of my projects, so I'm not really the authority on the topic. ;)

archivator | Thursday, Nov 8

SHOPPED.

Andy has never webcamed with a hot babe like Trillian.

ian.monroe | Thursday, Nov 8

thats great ! ..thanks :)

grg183 | Thursday, Nov 8

Fantastic, thank you! Apart from installing qt4 no other hassle. Have AcerCrystalEye via uvcvideo on Slackware 12. This is it! Any other feature (apart from stability) can wait :)
Keep up the good work.

drvictor666 | Thursday, Nov 8

when I figure out how to get the sound working on my machine I am so downloading this! (of course then I will need to figure out if my webcam works yet)

orantesgallery | Thursday, Nov 8

Nice! I've been waiting for this! Now, please kind sirs (and madams) provide us with an Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon build... Feisty Fawn is so yesterday.

jacksenechal | Thursday, Nov 8

Ok so FYI to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon users, the Feisty build works fine... I just downloaded it and installed as usual, no problems.

Skype people, how 'bout updating that page to tell people its fine for Gutsy?

jacksenechal | Thursday, Nov 8

Great work guys, I've installed the latest on Ubuntu gutsy and works a treat :)

etarkoo | Thursday, Nov 8

berkus: Thanks

dan_mazzei | Thursday, Nov 8

and still no 64bit version of skype ... I do not like to have to do "tricks" to run skype, it can not be that hard to build a version for a 64bit Linux System ...

paranoid1984 | Thursday, Nov 8

works great on Gentoo (asus g1s). Thank you guys for awesome work.

r.piasek | Thursday, Nov 8

Thanks devs! This is absolutely fantastic. And it works with my laptop's built-in Sony VGP-VCC2 camera. Debian packages for the supporting driver can be found at:

http://www.arakhne.org/spip.php?page=recherche&recherche=ricoh

tmhoogland | Thursday, Nov 8

Thanks for all your effort, guys! You do fine work.

el.ogro. | Friday, Nov 9

Thank you devs for bringing video on Skype Linux to fruition!! Seems to work fine here with a test video call--using the gspca driver and a Creative notebook cam. A revolution indeed, and a much welcomed one :-)

greenkov | Friday, Nov 9

Hello!
Don't work under Ubuntu 7.10.
In configuration>>video devices, I can find my web cam - QCM USB Camera(/dev/video0),but when I test it,I can't see my web cam image( it's black). This camera works with amsn.
Thanks.

vatnka | Friday, Nov 9

Some cams don't work:

WINDOWS NEVER MORE!!!!

THANKS DUDES!!!!!!!!

juliano.vidal | Friday, Nov 9

About what you said above, regarding 64-bit support: Just like Linux users in the past, 64-bit Linux users are here to stay, and there are only going to be more of us once 64-bit Java browser plugins are fully working (i.e., once Java 7 is complete). In addition, while I have Skype 2.0 beta installed without a problem on Gutsy AMD64, it does not detect my webcam, even though other programs do. I don't really think a 64-bit version of Skype is necessary, as long as there's some way to resolve this issue - I was really excited to finally have webcam support on Linux, only to find that it doesn't actually work. For reference, I've got a Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Premium (I think), using the gspca driver. Any thoughts on how to get it working?

pandaemonium42 | Friday, Nov 9

Awesome! Keep up with the great job and we will help bring users!

eduardobk | Friday, Nov 9

Finally it's ok for me:
Debian Etch 2.6.18
Video card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device
webcam: ID 0ac8:301b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0301 WebCam (device gspca)
And Iadvice to have a look at:
http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIuserguide.html to have the direct rendering, else video doesn't work.

yanlot | Friday, Nov 9

Video works for me. But i have problems with sound. The quality is very bad. When i switch back to 1.4 it sounds great.. 2.0 again..sound is bad.

ro_claus | Friday, Nov 9

Very good but i need a 64bit version of skype!
Molto bene ma ho bisogno della versione a 64 bit di skype!!!

Bye

mauro_gatti | Friday, Nov 9

Works right after downloading (Debian Etch, 2.6.22, pwc).

pkubanek | Friday, Nov 9

I wish the Skype for Linux had the same extras it had on Win :(

Unfortunately, Skype for Linux is, unacceptably, not enoough.

I really got bored being have to use win whenever I need to use Skype in an effective way.

cihantunc | Saturday, Nov 10

I was afraid that promises of quick release with video sopport were something to silent people on forums. Now, i know i was wrong. Good job. Please i cannot change brightness, contrast etc. so i really can see almost nothing (black screen on testing)

slashi5180 | Saturday, Nov 10

For some reason I forgot that 1.4 had made it to Gold, I guess it makes sense not to replace it with a beta then!

Nice work on this; it's been fine for me so far. Thanks again.

tgoose | Saturday, Nov 10

many thanks to the skype team to give us the video for linux. windows is just getting wiped off my hard drive. this day should have been before the arrival of vista.

i'm happy, happy, happy...

all i ever wished for

martin_makella | Saturday, Nov 10

Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX (gspca) works well with this beta and I was able to make a videocall successfully to my friend who is a Mac user. Logitech Quickcam 5000 (uvcvideo) works well with xawtv4 and kdetv, but in Skype for linux it only shows a green screen both in video settings test window and during a video call. It even lights a green LED on a webcam correctly, but no picture :)

peeterrussak | Saturday, Nov 10

Hello,

Thanks for this release. It really rocks, but is there any chance to get OSS support in Skype 2.0, as it was in 1.4 ?

Best regards,
Cristi

magheru_san | Saturday, Nov 10

Awesome news!!! I'd just like to pass on my thanks to all the devs for finally making this happen! This was one of the final things keeping me using MS Windows. WOO HOO!!! :-D

itsjustarumour | Sunday, Nov 11

THANK YOU, at the least now we have the same BASIC functionality as Windows and Mac users have enjoyed, FINALLY... the wait has been long and victory has been sweet...

jojo_man99 | Sunday, Nov 11

Out of nerves!
Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Web, and nothing works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gwenn.allemon.moreilles | Sunday, Nov 11

Thank you very much!

I've been waiting patiently for ages now, and it works like a charm!

gardhauge | Monday, Nov 12

i am impressed, but also very confused on why sms seems to be harder to implement than video? ;)

tinnet.coronam | Monday, Nov 12

I have done some testing, I am receiving the video stream correctly. Once I start sending my own video stream skype crashes after about 1 minute of operation - probably a memory leak? My setup is:
- gspca driver
- Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX.
The camera/driver works correctly with mplayer.

I have loaded the skype into gdb to get some more information, below are the crash details, if that could be any helpful

honzik: Already fixed for next release.

andypoo | Wednesday, Nov 14

Happy to see the beginning of video in Skype. Even if mine is still not stable, I am glad to see it. No offense, but when is the next 2.0 update scheduled ?
Unfortunately, Skype on my Acer 5050 laptop will always be unusable until alsa can fix a problem (hda-intel/ azx-timeout) that cuts the sound after some minutes of speaking. That's sad, but my bug is still open in Alsa and except changing laptop now, I have not so many options.
Great job, Philippe

khunphil | Thursday, Nov 15

Hi there, If u still looking for Czech or Slovak translator I can try to lokalize it. I am from Slovakia so Slovak will by transalted. Have also couple friends they can help me with that.
Please let me know how to do it. (need some xls file or something?) Skype name petosan.
Actually I am using Ubuntu 64-bit Gutsy Gibbon and want to ask if there will be also package for this OS. Thanx
Peter

petosan | Thursday, Nov 15

Hi Linux Skype Guys.. Thankyou for the new beta.. looks ok, working ok here so far. using PCLinuxOS 2007 compiz/fusion Hauppague 34xxx PCI TV/cap card. had to pre set video input through TvTime to select composite. my crappy old generic USB OV 511+ webcam does'nt (black screen). . have'nt tried without compiz'fusion yet tho, sorry. USB webcam works ok in Ekiga/AMsn/Kopete tho. was usin XP/Skype in virualbox until now. i suspect some folks will ditch windows for good now. gulp :)

mark_g0ynm | Friday, Nov 16

Hi skype guys! Way to go! This version is a great improvement over the last one and it's running smoothly on my Gutsy Gibbon. If you pay attention to this messages, please enable the contact groups feature cause it really helps.

lothas | Friday, Nov 16

I`m trying 2.0 beta under my fedora7 x86_64bit system with gspca driver logitech communicate stx receiving video from my friends very good but skype consumes very much cpu time %40-50-60 random and here is the main problem when I start to send my video skype uses %100 cpu time and then 40-50secs later crushed I try lots of times same result I can give any other helpfull info for my system if u want but really bad prblem cant send video.

tedbunny | Friday, Nov 16

Yes! You're my idols... Works pretty fine with my Logitech webcam
together with Ubuntu Feisty. That's what i've been wating for; It's also supporting german language :-)
Thanks, very good job. I love it.

rick.b_1975 | Friday, Nov 16

I'm having the same problem as honzik.c6
Webcam works fine in camorama but NOT in skype, skype takes 99% CPU after initializing webcam. Using a logitech webcam

If anybody knows an answer
let me know

cheers,
PJ

pjvolders | Friday, Nov 16

Hi, skype in linux with video is awesome! Really. But for me skype does not seem to like my Logitech Quickcam .... xawtv and camorama work fine. I am running on Ubuntu 7.10 in case it matters. To be more precise, the test screen in skype remains black when testing the webcam, although the webcam is recognized as Logitech Quickcam USB (/dev/video0).

If anybody knows how to get this to work, I would love to know. Best of luck with improving this beta. Great going!

Same problem here. I don't get it, no chance at all - screen remains green. I hope this would be fixed in the final version, I'am pretty disappointed with the beta...

damyan5 | Saturday, Nov 17

Good work!. Thank you.
At this point it is enough, but don't forget amd64 users. I think for you (that obviously have the source code) is not a hard work have one 64 bits "native" package.
Thanks for your effort.

gonzalomarcote | Saturday, Nov 17

Ahh!. Another thing. Don't forget Spanish language!. There is not spanish lenguage in Skype for Linux 1.4 and skype 2.0 beta (and there is portuguese, romanian... :0 ...). I think we are 500 millions of native spanish speakers. The 3ª lenguage in the world...

gonzalomarcote | Saturday, Nov 17

The Skype Video not work when Compiz Fusion started. The Xv not work together Skype Video. Whay?

lopanx | Saturday, Nov 17

GREAT WORK skype team! I'm now a happy skype user!

brian.trapp | Saturday, Nov 17

I don't know what happened! my Acer Orbicam worked when I've first run skype. But the next day, it doesn't work, black screen! what the matter? I have Fedora 8 x86_64 and I didn't change anything in the system! Webcam still works with Kopete, Ekiga and luvcview. I only downloaded some updates to the system, but don't remember exactly what updates. It's so strange! one day everything works like a charm, and the other... surprise... anyone here with the same problem? I hope that it is a bug, not a compatibility issue..

paulinalodz3 | Sunday, Nov 18

ok, I know the solution. It was the problem with ati video driver, after installing it I've got black screen. So look out for ati video drivers! after uninstalling it and manual removing ati folders my webcam works fine...

paulinalodz3 | Sunday, Nov 18

Great call! Working fine here =)
Keep up the good work!

ahmed_omran | Monday, Nov 19

Working well on Fedora 7 x86_64 with Logitech quickcam chat, v4l,
gspca drivers. Just need a brightness control as the image is
quite dark.
Nice job on the current version.

Nokia N800 version?

amigokin | Wednesday, Nov 21

Yeeees! i found it just yesterday ! I've been emulating windows only to run skype! thank you veeery very much! I've been with ubuntu only for about three months or so..my laptop's webcam wasnt working with other applications (ekiga, msn, kopete) (well.. it used to be working until i upgraded) BUT ITS WORKING WITH BETA VERSION OF SKYPE! UNBELIVABLE !:) thank you:)

zubrienoq | Wednesday, Nov 21

Some time shortly after the beta release, I have posted a note on skype crash. The response was that it has been fixed already. But is it only in your development tree? My question is what is the release cycle for beta's because the .deb package still seems to be on the same version?

honzik.c6 | Thursday, Nov 22

Yes, it's only in development currently. Our release cycle is generally 3-4 weeks between beta releases on Linux.

andypoo | Thursday, Nov 22

Although I have yet to make it work with my Communicate STX, I am genuinely grateful to Skype devs for this release - well done!

oyelekci | Thursday, Nov 22

Skype Linux 64 bits: How and When?

In its current version Skype seems to be 32 bits only... and 64 bits Linux has been available for over two years now, and is very good!

So could the Skype type, provide with an install file supporting 64 bits too?

Also it seems (according to forum posts) that some have been able to install and run the 32 bits version, on all the "major" 64 bits distros.

If this is the case, could the Skype team provide either the documentation or the RPM/DEB explaining how to achieve this little feast?

A.

agompel | Friday, Nov 23

A few days ago I had to get a new laptop and since skype didn't have webcam support for linux, a built-in one didn't seem to be so high on the list. I'm glad I got one anyways. Skype works like a dream now in Gentoo :) (on a 64bit AMD X2)!

Thanks!

ahalkola | Friday, Nov 23

Skype 32-bit works well (video also) on my 64-bit Ubuntu when run in a 32-bit chroot. More on this in:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24575
My problems there are links do not open in the right browser (or at all) and I still cannot input Chinese with SCIM in Skype. (On my 32-bit system everything works)

vermind | Friday, Nov 23

Thank you very much for releasing skype with video for Linux. Never thought that video calling with skype would become a reality so soon. Now one of the main problem with linux (VOIP and video chat support together) is solved. Skype developers we love u.

swaroop_sv2003 | Friday, Nov 23

Still a little bit buggy; I can't use Video chat more then 30 seconds because it crashes. But I am thrust full that thinks will get better. Thanks, Skype (Linux) Team!

mdaocus | Saturday, Nov 24

Yahooooo, that is awesome news. Thank you guys. One less reason to use Windows.

morfeibg | Monday, Nov 26

Great news for all Linux community! However, I noticed a strange phenomenon: apart from the error reported by honzik.c6 (which is reported to be corrected in the next release), I also noticed that the video session does not start if the webcam is connected via a USB hub. Skype can find it (and the "test" button in the options menu works) but when a call is attempted, it tries to start the video and fails (the audio call goes through, thought).

jgrnst | Monday, Nov 26

Running skype 2.0 beta on fedora 7 with a Communicate STX. Everything started well but then skype shut down completely after 30 seconds. Did this twice. Turned video off and skype worked well with only voice. Will try again.

fdestcroix | Tuesday, Nov 27

I just bought an Eee PC by ASUS, it's a Linux PC. I found the Skype built in is version 1.4, the PC can't support 2.0 so far for lack of dynamic webcam, among maybe some other reasons.

I'd say Skype for Linux is primitive so far comparing with those versions for Windows, especially I'm very much used to sending SMS throught Skype, while Skype for Linux can't.

Can developers please help, for those Linux supporters?

trsyeh | Tuesday, Nov 27

why do I have "call dropped" after 50 seconds ? is this intentional (beta version)?

I second this. (or millionth it, if you wish)

I'll just go back to 1.2 ..

sy_ali | Saturday, Dec 1

That's really a great news!

mishranurag | Saturday, Dec 1

I would really love to say great work; however, it appears as if there is still a lot to do to get this working for all linux distros and hardware platforms.
I am running a gentoo distribution that only works when the product operates correctly. I do not have icons or video yet, but sound appears to work all right.
The portage system belches ominous errors on installation after one jumps over the hardmasked status of the binary indicating something about an executable stack probably being erroneous, which would explain some of the non-functionality of the system.
I would love to see you up there with a really stable Skype interface soon, so that I can use all of these great features everyone is speaking about.

By the way, there is a new beta update - 2.0.0.27 - available now.

Enjoy!
Andy.

andypoo | Friday, Dec 7

Great job, the new beta works reasonably well on my configuration. Just a couple of comments:
1. During a video call, the image (my side) freezes for 10-20 seconds after 2-3 minutes. It does not happen more than once during a call.
2. It is impossible to turn the video on in a conference call; as an example, I was on call(with video on), then added another person, the video turned off the moment I pressed "invite to a conference" and it was impossible to turn it on again.

jgrnst | Friday, Dec 7

Could this be made into a native PulseAudio application, before the final release?

Given how every Linux distribution already has or will soon be standardizing on PulseAudio as the sound system, it would be wise to upgrade Skype into a native PulseAudio application now.

As it stands, I've tried just about every trick mentioned on every forum to make Skype work with PulseAudio, to no avail: audio playback works (and not too well at that), but microphone capture doesn't work at all. Besides, directly accessing ALSA is a big no-no for userspace applications. Thus, the only real cure is to upgrade Skype into a native PulseAudio application ASAP.

perkelix | Sunday, Dec 9

HI, very nice work this version!! works very well in gutsy. I was just wondering if it could be a solution for get the video working with compiz fusion activated. Now gutsy comes with it and as many other programs (kdenlive) the video does not show with compiz turned on... please take this in count maybe some way to determine wich video output you want to be compatible with compiz... thanks!!! and great work

I get a black window when I test my Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 (http://www.smolts.org/wiki/usb/046d/08c5/0000/0000) webcam in fedora 8 under skype_static-2.0.0.27. Same webcam works with ekiga with a glitch from time to time. Is there a bugzilla or the like for skype? Didn't see a link to it on this page.

lafa_home | Wednesday, Dec 26

Hi,

Can somebody recommend me a webcam that just works with this 2.0 beta? Thanks for any answer...

gwenn.allemon.moreilles | Sunday, Dec 30

Answering gwenn.allemon.moreilles's question about webcams: I own logitech quick cam 5000 and Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks I was not able to make any of them work. I'm running Ubuntu-feisty fawn, skype 2.0.0.27. The 5000 can get an image only of the top 5% of the screen sound capture works fine.

I've recently purchased Quickcam pro 9000 it works out of the box with grate image and very good capture.

Two bugs I've experienced using skype with pro9000 for the last two weeks extensively: 1) Once: call dropped 20 seconds after starting video. Closing skype didn't solve it. Fixed it by killing the process, pulling out the camera from USB plugging back in and restarting skype.
2) Rarely (I think happened twice): video works, I head other party but other party can't hear me. Fixed by ending the call and calling back.

Hope this helps. I'm very happy with the new version. Some of the features are better then in the win version. E.g, you can send multiple files and accept multiple files easily. I think that delay is much smaller but it might just be better resource management attributed to Ubuntu.

regards,
Ronen.

ronen.vaisenberg | Sunday, Dec 30

Ronen,

Thank you very much for this real complete answer that really help. I think I will buy the Quickcam pro 9000 and share the reasult with Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10.

Once again, Thanks a lot Ronen.

I have a Logitech QuickCam, the camera works with the Camstream application and gspcav1 driver. But no video in Skype :-(

lazarus43 | Tuesday, Jan 1

Same situation here. My camera is Logitech QuickCam and work with everything except Skype. With Skype Image is too dark and my CPU is running on 100%! I made query in skype linux forum - but no any responce from developers. I'm very disappointed.
Happy New 2008 Year!

valentin.b.iliev | Tuesday, Jan 1

Hi all,

Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX plus (046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc.) Running driver (videodev 29312 1 gspca) on Ubuntu 7.10 gutsy.

Camera works out of the box with canorama but Skype (2.0.0.27) shows black screen when I click "test" in video preferences. The camera is listed in the drop down list though so it's promising!

Anyone had any luck getting it working?

Cheers,

Mark

Hello LINUX world! I just bought an ASUS EeePC which has introduced me and my wife...we bought 2 so we can communicate when I'm on the road to Linux.

The EeePC came with linux...WOW! easy, clean and no problems!

Being very new to Linux...Should we download the new SKYPE for Linux that has video capability or should we wait a while?

The Asus EeePC comes with an earlier Skype version and video Cam already installed?

And how do I find the answer to this question? Hopefully it will appear on this blog??

I have Skype Beta running on OpenSuse 10.3. I have a Logitech QC Pro5000, and it works with the luvc drivers. I tried to get this working with OpenSuse 10.2, and it just wasn't happening. Once I upgraded my OS, I thought I'd give this another shot, and it worked from the start. I suspect that there was an improved driver in the new distro.

It isn't 100% Sometimes when I check my webcam it shows a black screen even though it is recognizing the camera. I've found that in some cases it will work if I check my webcam in Kopete or Ekiga, and then restart Skype, and the worst case is that I have to unplug the cam, and plug it back in.

I generally have ekiga open at the same time anyway so that I have some control over my camera while I'm using it in Skype. It would really be nice if the Skype interface included camera controls.

I am having the problem with the qt library that is just showing the top left corner of video, but that isn't a problem in full screen mode.

I have noticed that the synching of audio and video seems better than the Windoze version, although the incoming video doesn't look as good.

When I'm in Windoze I never check my camera to make sure it's working. In Linux I have to check it every time, because half the time I don't have video without a little intervention.

jtrops | Monday, Jan 14

I'm new to Linux and terribly disappointed that SMS isn't supported in Skype for Linux, in fact even to the extent that it makes me reconsider switching from Windows. Also confused because I would have thought that for someone who knows what they're doing surely it's not massively complicated, plus it's not a free service, surely it's of more interest to Skype to include this service than video, which is free. Having to reboot to windows every time I want to SMS is simply not viable!!! PLEASE can we have SMS on Linux PLEASE ;)

Please please make it work with pulseaudio... I have huge issues with any kind of usb headset without pulseaudio. I have to choose between listening to music or using skype. :-(

irlkersten | Tuesday, Jan 15

Please! Implement support for pulseaudio! Or at least clean up the alsa related code so it works with the alsa wrapper for pulseaudio (which solves all other problems with audio in linux, except for Skype).

And come on! I'm actually paying for this service!

lunderhage | Wednesday, Jan 16

I have the same problem with black screen when i clicked the test button. I'm using generic vimicro 303b with V4L2 (video 4 linux driver) and the chip is ZC0301.
Is there any official article about this issue from Skype yet? Has this problem been solved or is the development team still working on this?

huaiong | Monday, Jan 21

Thank you very much, Skype. You guys rock. Been waiting for quite sometime for video support on linux.

Plugged in my Creative webcam into my Ubuntu machine running 7.10 Gutsy and, lo behold! video. Thanks again. Skype rules. Keep up the good work. And again thanks.

vishnumrao | Thursday, Jan 24

One important feature missing from the Linux version is eBay Alerts.

I know that everyone has a different opinion on what is a priority, but considering eBay is the parent company of Skype this feature should be a priority, IMHO.

joaofraga | Friday, Jan 25

I think after stabilizing everything, i think you should support PulseAudio, this really the audio future of linux and a great solution for everyone, no need for devs to support differently usb handsets, alsa, oss bla bla and makes users desktop life easier too. Anyway I have said many times, that I really like your work, ty again :)

squarious | Sunday, Jan 27

Hi folks. I am super excited at the prospect of video in Skype for linux.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell D630. Installed Skype from Medibuntu and all the dependencies but when I run skype from the command line I get the following:

skype: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libQtDBus.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN14QObjectPrivate15checkWindowRoleEv

I've Googled for over an hour to find a solution but no success... since I don't speak Hungarian!

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,
J.

johnnycakes79 | Tuesday, Jan 29

Another one here hoping to see compatibility with compiz - for anyone looking this up - switch to default windows manager and video works - type
"kwin --replace" in console w/ root priveledges

once done w/ video type
"compiz --replace" to return to compiz interface

ahaukas | Thursday, Jan 31

Any news about the stable version coming out? What features can we await for the next release? I'd like to suggest implementing the feature that tells you when somebody is typing a message in a chat window. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!

ahmed_omran | Monday, Feb 4

Hey , you guys still alive ?
Give us a sign so that we know you are all right .

Best Regards , looking forward to the stable release .

mo_ucina | Wednesday, Feb 6

A number of people have mentioned problems with one or another camera/distribution. So I thought I'd mention: Fedora 7 (2.6.23.8-34.fc7) with a Logitech QuickCam 4000 Pro USB webcam appears to be working flawlessly/seemlessly for me.

It's nice to have my laptop no longer playing second-skype-citizen to the kids' Apple.

My only "real" (and that's quoted because it is quite minor) problem has been remembering to shift sound input/output devices between my laptop's built-in hardware or my headset or (for input only, obviously) my webcam. A "nice to have" feature would be some "search list" analog or perhaps some "shortcut" mechanism that would permit easy switching between multiple user-predefined configurations.

Thanks.

Great news and great skype version!
However, to send SMS, the only viable solution is tu use Openwengo.
(And it is cheaper than Skype!)

Sure

1) Check if Your camera does work with camorama
2) Check if Skype detects Your camera
3) Use metacity instead of compiz

BTW. When there will be option for skype to use X11 instead of Xv ? So it will work with compiz ?

mashuuk | Monday, Feb 11

mashuuk, check out the latest beta update (2.0.0.43) which is available from here. This version features support for X11 instead of Xv. :)

Black screen problem solved !
Distro: Debian Unstable,
Graphic card: Radeon X1300 (with non-GLP'd driver)
Skype: 2.0.0.43, Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro (046d:08b1)

My problem was "Black preview window on the test pannel of Skype with a webcam working nicely with other linux applications such as ekiga.

I got 'no adaptor ...' with a command 'xvinfo', and realized my problem might be about video overlay.
After putting options (such as "VideoOverlay" "on" and "TexturedVideo" "on") to xorg.conf (see http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ATI_Mobility_Radeon_X1400), I was able to enjoy video call with my family.

Good luck.

hyo

hyoskim | Wednesday, Feb 13

My problem is also a "Black preview window". The webcam working nicely with other linux applications such as ekiga, xawtv, camorama, ...

Distro: ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy, linux-headers 2.6.22-14
Notebook: Fujitsu Amilo Pro V3515
Graphic card: VIA Technologies, Inc. Chrome9 HC IGP
Skype: 2.0.0.43 and 2.0.0.43-1
Cam: Creative Live!CAM Notebook

under vesa skype finds no Xv ports available and with compiled openchrome i get a problem about video overlay:

Skype Xv: Xv ports available: 1
Skype XShm: XShm support enabled
Skype Xv: Using Xv port 60
Skype Xv: No suitable overlay format found

i tried xorg.conf options "VideoOverlay" and "TexturedVideo" but no luck so far.
Maybe anyone here had any luck with a similar configuration?
Thanks in advance,)

chiliroose1979 | Tuesday, Feb 26

Hi all, a 64 bit version would be nice however I got it working on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) by using the "force-architecture" command when installing from the command line. Also Automatix has Skype in its install list for those who are uncomfortable with the command line. I haven't tried this yet but am about to on another AMD 64 machine I will keep you informed. I haven't got my camera(s) (I have several different brands) working yet even with other app's but I plan to buy one of the recommended Skype cameras. So haven't been too tenacious with it yet.
SMS is the thing that is annoying me the most at the moment. I could live with it if this feature was provided. I am confident i can fix the camera.
Hope this helps some of you.
When is the next release expected ? I use Skype more than my phone and have come to depend on it. It is annoying to have to go into Windoze just to send an SMS.
Keep up the good work guys after the release of Vista I think Linux (and especially Ubuntu) will become even more popular.
cheers Tony

Hi
Many, many thanks! I was wondering what to do when my Asus EeePC finally arrives. Now, it'll be my best friend! You've made it totally complete.
Kindest regards, Andy, Oulu, Finland

andycrofts | Friday, May 2

I have Skype 2.0.0.68 installed on an ASUS F3Jr notebook computer with Kubuntu 8.04 64bit installed and a Logitech Ultra Vision Webcam. I was able to use it successfully for a short time in a conversation between Australia and the UK. The recipient in the UK commented that the image quality was poor compared with when I used it on Windows XP. I could not increase the received image size. If I went full screen, the image was in the center surrounded by black. At the start of the Skype session there were several breaks in the connection but after this was over the line continued for about 10 minutes and then the camera light went off and no picture was being sent. I then finished the conversation using Windows. I am very pleased to see the advances of Skype for Linux and I look forward to the day when it works as well as on Windows as this is the main reason I retain Windows.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to getting video soon.

simonlinj | Friday, Sep 12

Everything works fine... except that I see my video and the person I'm in a video call with IN THE SAME TINY WINDOW, which is supposed to show me, instead of the other person. The whole area intended for the person you're calling is totally blue.

Anyone ran into the same problem? I'm on minBuntu 8.04 LTS on an HP mini-note 2133. Strange because I've installed skype before and I'm on the same setup I had before I reinstalled minBuntu. THanks!

thanks guys!!!, video support for linux is great news.

Still, 64 bit version is dearly needed. It took me a while to run skype under my 64 bit box (Slamd64). I can't make it to use alsa, it only works with oss compatibility which causes problems with other apps.

COME ON GUYS!! which revolution! this 2.0 version sucks! pidgin looks better and works better.

nothing works flawlessly in this version, sound is crap, video too, all the time something to tune to make it at least work. this thing is about 2 or more years old. in windows version 4 and for linux this nightmare?? come on, you have tons of money and are not capable of producing a decent linux version?

yeah, excuses are always good, they just don't bite

Please release an improved version of Skype for Linux...

mtfraven | Friday, Jan 16

Well, I'm going to switch to Ekiga on Ubuntu, but that leaves out the girl I'm dating, who uses OSX. Blast, how I wish the pidgin devs would get on top of voice and video chat already. Perhaps empathy will progress faster on that front..

ethana2 | Saturday, Jan 17

Skype for Linux. update version. unusable unstable security hazard. where are developers? where are revisions? where is newer versions updated to par with windows versions?

it is hazardous to let development happen out of sync for multiplatform.

a tiny company like Bungie software back in the day before microsoft bought them managed simultaneous releases of their game Myth for Mac and PC. go look it up. and get your act straight.
