Busy days at the Mac team
By
Andrus on April 20, 2006 in General.
I can only agree with people who have commented here that we should get Skype for Mac 2.0 out quicker. And that we should have more news on Mac. As a matter of fact we do have news for you guys but Nils is so busy driving Mac projects that he has very little time for blogging.
Today, for instance, we launched a dedicated [store for Mac stuff](http://accessories.skype.com/section?secid=39163). Check out the new handsets and headsets yourself and stay tuned for more accessories.
Meanwhile our motivation to get more features for Mac out fast keeps growing. One thing is your comments, but guess who recently bought his first Mac. None other than Niklas Zennström, one of Skype's founders, himself. I bet he's as keen to make video calls on his brand new MacBook Pro than any other Mac user out there. So expect to hear from us soon. (Sorry, no dates yet.)

Comments
You will do a lot to clam the ardent spirits
by releasing in the meantime bug fixes to eliminate especially the one introduced with the latest 1.4.0.35 !?
Thanks.

It's great to hear that Niklas Zennström has a MacBook Pro (Intel).
but PLEASE.... make sure the next Skype upgrade (w/video) is compatible with non-Intel Macs.
In Dec. I purchased a G5 PPC "Quad" and a G5 iMac (a few weeks before the new Intel iMacs came out! ) and I use Skype every day to call around the world. My new iSight is not being used because our co-workers only have Skype – not iChat.
Keep in mind the vast majority of Mac users who still do not have Intel machines.
Thanks.

"our motivation to get more features for Mac out fast keeps growing."
This is great information !
... well is it really ?
It looks like teasing more than anything else to me. Stop torturing us
Give us at least some clue : should we count the hours, the days, or the weeks before the release ?

I'll be ready to get the new Skype for Mac.
Thanks!

Long overdue - the codecs been available for the Mac since early this year I thought ? ... and still the lame apology of no date.

I´m waiting too...
I just bought a new iSight Camera.
And of course Niklas Zennström bought the best Computer around at this moment.

Hello, just added one of those new fangled skype buttons to my website only to discover I can't show my status online because I don't have the option to “Allow my status to be shown on the web” checkbox in the privacy panel. I guess this features not available yet for mac. I am sooooo cheesed off. I am gonna cry. Just ordered my usb phone as well. When... when... when??? please just do this little thing for me, its such a cool idea. I'll never buy a pc so you must help me

Hello Skype-Team,
unless you do not post any release dates, could you please tell us: Will Skype 2.0 also run on my G4 PowerBook? I do not want to buy a new mac only because you guys have a deal with Intel
Cheers.

Hi!
I do have two suggestions for new features for skype.
(1) You should be able to see an icon when someone is typing sth. in a chat
(2) Skype-windows should fade out when they are not active. // ( -> blue-screen fade out when launching skype )
ich hope you will add those features (they are easy to code)
good night and keep on working

Hi again, and thanks for feedback.
gd-jac, a little bird whispered in my ear that this bug will be fixed this week.
timshirey and da_schlitzer, of course next Skype for Mac will run on non-Intel Macs. I believe it will work on any Mac running 10.3 and 10.4
image31, thanks for the ideas. Lets see what our product team will do with these.
zabaman, when you compare my and Nils's blogger info (you know, "the By Andrus on April 20, 2006" next to the headline) on the Mac blog you'll see that there are slight differencies. Nils, using one of the latest builds can already show his online status on our site and any other site; whereas I, using the version most users do (1.4.0.35) get only a grey questionmark next to my name. So we're already testing this.

video-codec is ready: http://www.on2.com/company/news-room/press-releases/?id=333
webcam-drivers are ready: http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/
my windows-guys are ready.
what are you waiting for? please, give us a beta to play around.

Have switched from xp to osx a few weeks after 2.0 for Windwos was released and have been suffering in the skype time-warp since. I used to rely heavily on Skype, promoting it to colleagues, friends and family -- have now been forced to use POTS again as Skype client under osx-on-intel is cumbersome, buggy, glacial and a performance-killer. PLEASE show us some love...

I just downloaded the new Mac update - Skype 1.0.0.44 which was made available today (April 26). Could you list the changes made in this version? I have not found this explained anywhere on the website.
A problem....
I replaced the previous Skype version and now Skype 1.0.0.44 version won't even open on my Mac. I've done Skype upgrades on my Mac before but never had a problem with it not starting.
timshirey | Wednesday, Apr 26
Just to clarify...
In my previous post a moment ago I stated that the version downloaded was 1.0.0.44. This is what the file info read. The downloaded .dmg filename is 1.4.0.39 (made available today).
...still can't get it to startup.
timshirey | Wednesday, Apr 26
1.4.0.39 failed with a "Check 2 failed. Can't run Skype" error in my console log on a ibook G4, which is the same error reported by users on intel macs as well.
The release looks like it has been pulled shortly after release.
Looks like a whoopsy. Guess that's what we deserve for pestering and being so rude about asking them to hurry up and release a new version
I just hope this mistake was just a hiccup due to them focussing so much on the upcoming 2.0 version...

Why advertize sype phones on the mac list THAT AREN'T COMPATIBLE? It's really annoying to find one needs Windows software to make them work. We 5%-ers are underserved - yet being smarter, newer, etc. we should be getting it all at the same time. Right?! C'mon...or I'm off to VONAGE.
hugenjolly | Saturday, May 6
Hi hugenjolly
What model are you referring to? Unless there's some kind of misunderstanding I'm quite sure all phones on our Mac category work on Macs.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. I'm using Skype very successfully on my Mac G5. I usually have my audio output set to external speakers for background music, but when I place a Skype call I have to go into Preferences and change that preference to my USB Plantronics headset.
Is there some little script that would autmatically change this setting when I go to Skype or its Widget, then change it back when I hang up. It would also be helpful if I could mute the music, which comes from XM-Internet, as Skype does automatically for i-Tunes.
fl_rv_guy | Thursday, May 25
fl_rv_guy, here's a couple of tips from our Mac team:
* If you want to listen to music through external speakers and use Skype via headset, you could leave general output to extern speakers and set Skype output to headset.
* Also, there seems to be no automatic script for switching, but there's a freeware called "SoundSource" by Rogue Amoeba http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/ that makes switching easier.

Just trying to update me Skype to the latest upgrade, running a mac power book pro but the damn thing won't let me upgrade...
Everytime I try to drag the icon over to apps keeps saying not enough user privileges to install!!!
Anyone encountered this issue before and how to get it sorted?

I'm using the lastest Skype for MAC running OS X 10.4.8 and using a plantronics DSP 400 headset (USB). I find when making calls i experience audio fading in and out both transmitting and receiving. My preferences are set correctly and have tested various input & output volume settings. Nothing works to eliminate this problem. I've tested it on My G5 as well as Mac Mini. Same issue on both. Anyone else have this issue?? SO Frustrating ! it's impossible to have a conversation with anyone as the signal constantly fades out the In. ARGH !!!
HELP !
