Skype is Universal
By
Nils on May 11, 2006 in Skype for Mac.
We released Skype for Mac 1.4.0.49 today, which is our first Universal build of Skype. Universal means that Skype now runs natively on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac computers, boosting the performance of Skype running on Intel Macs.
1.4.0.49 also includes support for web presence, which allows you to showcase your online status on the web or in an email signature. See the status sign next to this blog post for an example.
To activate web presence, go to Preferences -> Privacy, and tick the box saying 'Allow my status to be shown on the web'. More info about web presence here.
Finally, we've translated Skype into Traditional Chinese for this version. More languages to follow in upcoming releases.

Thanks a lot for this !

Excellent! We integrated Skype Web Presence to the Open Source CRM app we're working on, OpenPsa (http://www.openpsa.org).
But as everybody in our team uses a Mac the Web Presence thing wasn't that useful before this...

Thanks Mac team !
This works great for me. It seems much more stable than the previous version under rosetta, not to mention it's fast now !
This will tide me over very well until the video version is released. Thanks for taking the time to produce a universal binary for all us intel-mac owners.

Well pleased with this. The old non-intel version was doing my head in a bit. Many thanks for the hard work and not forgetting us!

Video calling for Mac? Hmm? Soon? That would be great.

You shoudl finally move on and release new version for Linux. It is absurd that Linux users are kept at using v. 1.2.whatever. Please, finally move on and release 2.0 for Linux that has the same features as the one on Windows.

Having it not universal until now has been my biggest compliant. I personally can care less for video. I just need something with great audio quality to make phone calls. The Rosetta emulation previously was very slow and I always had stability issues. I would quit the app to reluanch it but the previous process would not quit entirely. I would have to go to the command line and do a kill -9 before I could restart it. THANKS! Much love Mac Skype Team!

That didn't take too long. Not anywhere as long as it OBVIOUSLY takes to port Skype to Linux/PPC. Seriously guys, what makes it so hard?
Long live SIP and open protocols!

2 things...
1. They take too long, and this is not "wow, great, thanks". This is an "at last"... Skype for Mac should improve a lot of things yet. Give us some REAL updates.
2. What about Linux users?... I am not one, i actually hate Linux, but hey!... they're people outhere that don't use Windows, and we (Linux and Mac users) pay a lot (A LOT) of money to support Skype. Treat us the same way!
ronald_poi | Friday, May 12
Well, whatever the usual complainers say, I want to thank you all for the work you're doing.
Someone here said we're paying a lot of money. Certainly not half as much as the Windows community.
Skype is not a right. I wouldn't go as far as to say that's it's a gift, but this new release added to the recent hiring of Ryan as a project management is an obvious commitment to the Mac and Linux platforms.
So please everybody, stop shouting and whining, not only is it the behaviour of spoiled brats, but it is as well a little insulting to those actually working for us at the moment…
This said, a message to the development team: it is common knowledge that waiting is less stressful with a frequent update on what's going on

Well done. Keep on waiting italian version and Video one!

Ronald, this may be an "at last", but with the addition of Ryan to make sure the mac product gets developed faster, maybe instead of being ungrateful we can say "thank you" to the skype team for getting it done.
Yeah, I want video and all the rest of the features skype has on windows, but having UB is a huge help for me personally. Maybe if people starting appreciating what's given them, the mac team at skype will have more fun getting us new features and that will have a definite effect on their speed in releasing new stuff.
So thanks to the skype team, and - well, you are fully aware of what everyone wants next!

Seems to me that complains come from the fact there's a better version on widnows. Wouldn't it be possible to release the same features on Windows and Mac (and Linux), I think it would stop the complains. Like "hey there's a new feaure in a new version of Skype"... "Cool I can use it with my Linux and Windows friends"
instantane | Sunday, May 14
Well at least this brings Skype for Mac up to speed with the Windows version, sans the video part.

I use Skype for OSX everyday (as my telephone, I have no mobile or landline) and will offer some suggestions:
First off, when viewing profiles, please make the command to close windows (command+w) close the profile window. As it is now, it closes all windows behind it. Strange. Hopefully easy to change.
Second, "sign on as different user" and "sign out" do the same thing. They both just sign out.
Third, when you type in a username you have told Skype to remember a password for, it does not enter it automatically. Instead, after you type in the account, you have to click the username drop down menu, and release it. This will add the password. However, the username dropown does not have multiple usernames, so you must type in the username every time (hence, why is there a dropdown??)
Forth, one used to be able to set an amount of time Skype rang before sending the call to voicemail. What happened to that option?
Fifth, a friend of mine uses the the Windows version of Skype. When in conference mode, she can add other users who are not on her contact list (or authorized) to the conference. The mac version can't.
I have a lot of other things like this to mention, but I'll just hope for a few fixes each release. Anyway, thanks for the continued development. Skype looks better for OSX than any other OS. Why not work to make the OSX version the best? Your CEO just bought a MacBook Pro, so show off! ^_^

Thanks Mac team "NOT!" If anyone really wants to understand how horrible the current Skype client for Mac is, check out the book, "O'Reilly Skype Hacks" and once you realize that over half of the hacks are worthless to your Mac's flavor of Skype, you'll not only kick yourself for buying the book, you'll pummel yourself for precious time lost test driving Skype!

Will there be iSight and Mac Address Book integration in future Skype for Mac versions?
Both would be extremely useful additions.

For the people who quoted me: I'm grateful, of course i am, i use Skype and i pay to make my calls, i think Skype is a great idea... but a great idea is not the same that "great application". The Mac version is old and buggy. The Linux version is even worse. Skype should be the SAME for ALL it's users. Of course you could say Windows pay more, and i don'd doubt it, but that doesn't mean we Mac and Linux users doesn't exist. We do, and we just ask for a better version. Is not an "improve Mac and let Windows as it is now"... is an "improve Skype for EVERYONE, so we can use the same great features no matter what operating system we use"

How do you delete a contact? I tried to add a land line using the example and it didn't work. Help?
