Tips and Tricks for Chatting with Skype

By My status Nicola on July 3, 2006 in Skype for Mac.

We all love chatting with Skype so this week we’ll be posting hints and tips on group chat, chat history, bookmarking, emoticons and lots more to help you get the most out of Skype.

Starting a Chat

Chat is great for talking to your friends, family and colleagues when you don’t feel like speaking or maybe you’re busy in a meeting. To start a chat
1. Select the participant you would like to chat with from your Contacts List.
2. Then simply click the chat toolbar button.
3. A chat window will appear where you can type text chats to your friend and read their replies instantly.

Emoticons

A picture tells a thousand words and with Skype you can send emoticons or small pictures in chats to show how you’re feeling. You can send emoticons by typing in a shortcut such as “” or (y) or by selecting the drop down menu labelled emoticons to select the picture you’d like to send. For example, if you write (y) your friend will see a picture showing "thumbs up".

If you don't like these little figures, you can disable them under Skype -> Preferences -> Chat.

Is there a way to escape the text I type in order to avoid it being shown as some emoticon at the other end, even if the user I talk to has enabled Emoticons?

Hi there, I have downloaded the new skype 2.7 for Mac - it works beautifully except.... I cannot seem to open a chat? When I click on the chat icon of one of my contacts nothing happens. Pressing Apple 2 does not open the chat window. Under 'Window' drop down menu - the chat option is greayed out....?

Can you please help me?

Thanks!

I do not want to chat with unknown persons, announcing themselves as 'sexy'.
How do I disable chatting?

ssnykers | Thursday, Jan 29

You can block chats from people you don't know by adjusting your privacy settings. You'll find them in Skype > Preferences > Privacy if you're using Skype for Mac :)

I have the exact same problem as hawkster92 (comment from Dec. 31). How can I fix this problem?

Is there a way to set up the chat application in Skype so that an actual chat window opens upon receiving a message?

i.e.:- assume Skype is idle, and one of my friends texts me.
Can I set Skype up so that a window is open immediately?

Thanks.

sixthblade | Monday, Mar 16

@snaplejax make sure you're running the latest version of Skype :)

@sixthblade go to Skype > Preferences > Chats and check 'Open chats in separate windows' - does that do the trick?
