Skype for Mac 1.5 Gold
By
Ryan on September 13, 2006 in Skype for Mac.
Download Skype for Mac 1.5 Gold now.
Thank you to all of you who downloaded it during beta and helped us to test and improve all of the new features we’ve added.
We’ve got some great new features in this release, but the most visible is definitely the entirely new interface designed especially for Mac to be faster and easier to use, with exclusive Mac-only features like a detachable call window and resizable chat drawer.
We’ve made it easier for you to call traditional phones with the SkypeOut easy dialer which means you never again have to remember a country code. You can also call your existing contacts more simply by importing contacts from Apple’s Address Book or Microsoft Entourage and calling them directly with SkypeOut. Finding contacts has never been easier either with Quickfilter - all you need to do is start typing the first few letters in a contact’s name to see all the contacts that match your search immediately.
Get Skype for Mac 1.5 Gold here and don’t forget to tell us what you like (or don’t like) about Skype for Mac 1.5 in our survey

I'm using Safari and Camino, but i can't participate in your survey. I think there should be a popup (and the popup blockers are deactivated), but no way to get it working.

Markus,
It's working fine - there isn't supposed to be any popup. You will receive the survey on the email address provided.

All versions of Skype have a bug: They lose their contact to the iSight (FireWire) after a short time while skyping. I am using the microphone of the iSight, because its very good for Skype calls.

I've got exactly the same problem. After a while, the iSight microphone gets disconnectedk, i.e. the other person does not hear you anymore. Pulling out the firewire plug and reconnecting it usually helps, but that can't be the solution!

All worked fine with previous version (75) yesterday. Downloaded gold and cannot do test call - misc. error, no number, grey background. Downloaded v2 with video a few moments ago - same problem. Have also had to log in 3 times to get to this!
leyburnlife | Wednesday, Sep 13
Forgot to add - have sent message to support and tried going back to .75.
Still cannot do test call. Any ideas?
leyburnlife | Wednesday, Sep 13
I'm jealous because Windows users enjoy the customizable keystroke for sending messages in chat, while Mac users don't. It is slightly annoying for me since all my instant messaging software is set to send message with Command-Return, and in Skype it iakes me two or more tries to send a message
. Please add this option for chat preferences, I will greatly appreciate this, and may be not only me. Thank you.

Very nice, but sms for mac?

The new skype is very nice but it let some little bugs like some sound bugs and some strange words appear when we using some emoticones like:
and
. Other stuff is that nobody receive my skype invitation??? For the rest all is perfect. Continue like this.

All Skype versions (since 1.4) are transferring data (files) very slow.

I have noticed a lot of problems with echo that I didn't have with earlier versions (i.e. the ones with the echo cancelation option). I am using the same USB headset and USB phone and the echo is very noticeble to both myself and the people I talk to. I have just tried with success a Jensen jbt980 bluetooth headset and the echo seems to be greatly reduced. A problem that I think needs to be looked into. By the way I am having the echo problems on both my black Macbook and 1.5ghz 12" powerbook

I'm not getting a ring signal after the first call. It's all quiet, which makes it hard to know when someone is calling you...

Skype has caused me more hassle than pleasure on mac. I'm sick of it and switching to gizmo. It deleted ALL my contacts, and I can't get them back. That really pissed me off. Now it crashes whenever we're calling skype out users - in the middle of the call. We can't hear anything when skype users call us, but they can hear fine.
Conference calls don't work on non intel-windows systems, it's resource heavy in mac, and linux users don't have audio support.
Why is skype Windows biased? It seems they have an arrangement with key IT players, like Microsoft, and Intel. I hope they get burnt for anti competitiveness like Microsoft currently is in Europe. Wihout a doubt skype completely deserves it. Skype's behaviour is completely uncalled for and unfair on pro-choice users on linux and mac os x.
So here's my 'Skype, go to hell' message. You've lost my confidence and proven business objectives ruin good software. Shame on them
b.rudge | Friday, Sep 15
b.rudge. as a mac user myself, i understand your frustration. but your language is a bit unnecessary and not helpful. you have to accept that skype is a business and has every right to take care of their business interests. given the overwhelmingly large user base of windows, prioritizing resources for windows platform is a choice any business has to make. having said that, skype does seem to appreciate the support from mac users like us. their committment to develop GUI that is mac friendly is a testament to that. instead of venting, i think we mac users should thank the excellent work by skype's mac team!

I'm very frustrated. I downloaded the new vudeo beta, having tried the preview ane liked it, but keep getting "Misc. error", no number and a grey screen, so can't talk to anyone...
Has anyone had a fix from tech Support yet?
RobMcW | Sunday, Sep 17
I'm currently use Skype 1.5 Beta version for video calls on Mac.
I run it on a iMac G5 and works perfectly. I normally use for video calls to my sister (assembled PC), audio calls to PC and Macs with any problem.
Maybe am I lucky?
gaetanozagra | Sunday, Sep 17
OK set up the new version this morning and noticed that it works fine except the test call has lots of drop outs. I'll try again later to see if it's consistant, but the beta worked perfectly for audio and now it seems problematic.
saundhaus | Sunday, Sep 17
b.rudge - Would you like to be more specific with your problems? Skype will never delete all your contacts - have you accidently typed something into the quick filter bar, and then collapsed this? (By pressing the rounded rectangle button in the top right hand corner?)
If you're getting crashes, why not submit them to the skype support team here. They might be able to help on those - have you checked your hardware meets the requirements, and is functioning OK?
Conference calls work exactly the same on PowerPC systems as they do Intel, we haven't changed them in any way - We have tested, and continue to test, all our versions on both PowerPC and Intel. Is it possible that what is happening to you could be related to the other crashes you're experiencing?
As far as Linux, this is a Mac blog posting - but have you tried out latest 1.3 beta of Skype for Linux? This version supports both OSS and ALSA sound systems. (Previous versions have always supported sound)
I'm sorry that you have lost your confidence in Skype for Mac for the reasons above, but I can assure you we aren't evil - and care very much about pro-choice users, I'm one myself. Look at the Skype for Mac (and Linux) changelogs and you will see all the fixes and upgrades we make (and cotinue to make) for our loyal pro-choice (Mac OS X/Linux) users.
- Ryan.

RobMcW, thanks for your comment - I notice you've also posted on our forums. I have responded to this query there.

gerhard_uhlhorn,
If you are finding your files are relaying more often than you would like, please check your connection port in Preferences -> Advanced. You can then forward this port on your router/firewall. If you are unsure on how to do this, there is some good tips on how to do this on this site.

I have always had problems with dropped calls with 1.5 and 2 so keep going back to 1.4 which seems more stable. Do other people not have this problem?
Thanks,

I just downloaded the new version (I had a beta version on my mac previously). I was especially excited about the new development of being able to import my contacts from Address Book. But, alas, it isn't working for me! When I go to the menu bar, I find the Import option is greyed ... in fact, everything under Contacts is greyed (Add a Contact, Search for Skype Users, Send Contacts, Call, Start Chat...) Everything except Get Info, View Chat History and Share Skype with a friend. Is this happening for anyone else? Perhaps I am missing something obvious????

Hi, I am writing in on behalf of my 84 year old father. Recently his landline got cut off so I talked him into getting skpye so we could keep in touch until the landline was reconnected. He has a Mac - I don't. Initially everything worked fine. Then for some reason he was unable to call me at my skype address or on my landline. I have been trying to help him figure out what the problem is and whatever he is doing is making it worse. He now cannot skype my brother either. My brother and I are in CH while he is in Vancouver so we can't go over to look at what he has done. I told him to send a note to skype, which he did, but received no reply. Is there anyway I can put him in touch with a Mac user to try to help him out with his problems? I suspect it is something he is doing or has done, but since I don't have a Mac I cannot see his screen to try and figure out the problem. Also, he claims that he had to pay a fee to get skype - which sounds suspect. At first I thought he was on the wrong site, but since then everything else appears to be correct - so I don't know what he did or how to help him. Any tips to sort out my dad's problems would be appreciated. cya

Why?

Firstly... never use "Gold" in a version name. It isnt cool, it isnt "retro", its just a laughing stock of browsers that was "Netscape Gold"...
Now my point: Skype Tin, nicely and completely removed the system tray icon. This probably kills about 40% for anyone who power uses this product as we do in our office. Being able to quickly nav, to begin a chat/call from the drop down of contacts was the singly most functional thing about the interface... and now its gone.
We are now forced into a beginners kludge... the dock, or alt tab, bah I say.
Give us the system tray back. No way im ever going to upgrade the other macs at work until the system tray icon comes back.

> Now my point: Skype Tin, nicely and completely removed the system tray icon.
It's still there
Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Skype status in menu bar.
If it's ticked, it'll behave like you mentioned. Now you can upgrade all the machines at work!

Since I upgraded my OS to Tiger and skype to 1.5.08, I can not skype to skype with my client who is on a PC.
He can hear me, but I can not hear him. I have tested my skype with two people on macs, and called one land line and they all work fine, but my client on PC does not work.
Please help, he is getting frustrated.

Ryan,
I'm really, really trying to get skype functioning. I am co-hosting a saturday morning science related talk radio show, that is locally broadcast and streamed to the net. I would REALLY like to inclued and promote the Skype concept.... but I cannot even begin to get it working on my mac powerbook G4... I seemed to have some initial success with the older version, but when I "upgraded" to the newer 1.5 etc version, I can't even get the test call to work.
I am a true advocate of what you all are trying to do, but so far I have been unable to do anything with it on my Mac.... I seem to be able to call out (skype out) to land line phone, but no one can hear me... I have everything set up in my mac and skype prefereces.
I don't want to give up, but the learning curve is killing me...

RobMcW, if you get a Misc Error it may be that your 'account status' is 'offline'. Go to the 'Account' menu -> 'Change Status' to 'Online'. You can also do this by clicking on the gray check mark next to your account name in you contacts list window and choosing: Online.
I had the same problem with my Skype application and couldn't figure it out until doing a Google search. I couldn't find this specific solution listed in Skype's support database because it doesn't have an error message code number.

On the contrary, I think Skype for Mac is quite friendly to use. The video stuff has been a long awaited feature but finally I can use it with my other cross platform online friends. Being a Mac users for so long, got me used to the bloody acts of developers in the community for putting emphasis to the Mass market of PC world now. But still, the improved version is finally here. The feature lists can be added on, but as a basic tool for communication, it is sufficient for me. Thanks.

I have had Skype a few weeks now after downloading it onto my new iMac with OS10.4.8
I have to say this is a wonderful programme, my partner is a New Zealander and we live here in Oz and his family are all in NZ. We regularly chat online with skype and with webcams can also see each other which has been great for the family as I have had cancer this year and they can really see that I am doing well.
Skype will also be installed on my partners Uncles computer so we can also see and talk to our 90yr old grandmother.
What is even better now is that we can also do conference calls.
Thankyou for developing a fantastic programme for free.

Hi! A few points re contacts:
-1- the "Send Contacts..." feature doesn't seem to work. I have tried dozens of ways (between my various accounts) to try and synchronize them. I just get the message (after it appears to try for a while & whatever number of contacts I select) "0 sent, 1 queued, 0 failed"; anybody know a work-around?
-2- for example, why not add an "export contact" feature (in, say, tab-delimited format) that could be imported by another Skype Account or other programs?
-3- How about a feature to "Print" the contacts (maybe with an option to select what field are included but at the very least Name, Skype-Id and Skype-Out numbers)? That would also be another way to re-enter them if lost/deleted in error or into another account.
Otherwise - Skype is great! Skype-video & SMS are good too! (Although I still use iChat with other "iChatters" 'cause the quality is higher...)

Hello,
I have been able to skype plus make outgoing calls just great with mic + speakers thru my MacbooK Pro. I added a Plantronics Voyager 510 bluetooth - this , too worked . I then wanted to compare sound out + in and disabled the 510's. I could hear my I-tunes music again fine thru the internal speakers. somewhere I read I had to press F12key- I did.
But suddenly I can't skype and can't call out - when I press the little green " call - icon" the one you press to start calling - skype caller window flashes open for a second but immediately crashes closed. I have pressed F9, F10. I have shut down totally and defraged the hard drive - but SKYPE CALLER window still crashes.
PLease, please help.
Thanks a million.
