Time to celebrate
By
Nicola on September 20, 2006 in Skype for Mac.
We’ve launched not just one but two new versions of Skype for Mac, so you get to choose between Mac 1.5 Gold or Mac 2.0 with Video Beta. To celebrate we're offering every Mac user 10 minutes of SkypeOut free to call ordinary phones. So now you can call your friends and family who are still using ordinary phones and convince them to start using Skype.
You can learn more about SkypeOut here and don’t forget to claim your 10 free minutes of SkypeOut.
Update: This Skype Gift Day will run from 8am GMT 20th September until 8pm GMT 21st September and is open to all users who have recently downloaded Skype for Mac.

Excellent, thanks. But how does one claim this free credit? If it's on the linked page, it's certainly not obvious to me...

Thank you Skype!
@borneofarmer: did you install one of the new versions of Skype for Mac allready? The free skypeout announcement on my account page appeared only after installing one of the new Skype for Mac versions (I was still using a beta).
roelantkooij | Thursday, Sep 21
I hope you've been able to get your free minutes and enjoy calling. This is an exclusive Mac promotion so you'll only be able to claim your free minutes if you're on a Mac.
nicolariordan | Thursday, Sep 21
Yes yes yes yes... Great news and in French we say: Vive Mac et Vive Skype!!! Great job and thanks for all.
nehonhx | Thursday, Sep 21

gregdurrell | Thursday, Sep 21
Thanks for the gift!
However, I'm trying to log from my mac and I can't claim my 10 free minutes. I also have skype on my pc, is that a problem?
ferojaen | Thursday, Sep 21
Same here..
Have used a PC occasionally but mostly use the Mac. There's nothing about a voucher in there even though I'm running the latest 1.5 Skype.
trezzer | Thursday, Sep 21
I am on Safari with Skype 2.0 Beta running. When i log in, I do not see any note saying that I could claim a $10 Skype Out. What should I do?

Add me to the list of Mac users running skype 1.5 that can not figure out how to redeem the free 10minutes. And yes, I'm running skype and I've logged into my account.
wfiveash | Thursday, Sep 21
Me too! Where are the free 10 minutes?
tgkshorney | Thursday, Sep 21

It's not showing up on the "Your Account" page, nor the "Skype Out" page.

Just downloaded Skype video for Mac and downloaded maccam driver. My Logitech Quickcam displays a picture when I open maccam but when i open Skype preferences there is no camera to choose from. Skype can't recognize the camera. Any suggestions?
gjarusinsky | Friday, Sep 22
Now I don't work for Skype but their site clearly says "Free calls to ordinary phones Use Skype to call landlines and mobiles free in The US and Canada until the end of the year. " This 10 minutes is good for calling anywhere. All I did was log into my account on this webpage and there was a link I clicked. It said it would take awhile for my account to reflect the addition. "September 20, 2006 Promotion: 10 SkypeOut minutes Delivered"
cmckodac | Friday, Sep 22
I am one more of those who have upgraded to skype video for a mac and who is still looking for the free 10 minutes SkypeOut!? Anybody know how to receive them? Any suggestions? Thanks.
orichy | Friday, Sep 22

milesbutterworth | Friday, Sep 22

And no SMS for Mac Skype yet.. /sob.
lophis77 | Friday, Sep 22

david.haberthuer | Friday, Sep 22
Another one for the list:
MacUser, OSX 10.4, Skype 2.x Beta, Safari, Firefox (and Flock) and no option anywhere to clame these minutes... I guess there is supposed to be an option in my account overview but I am quite sure it´s not on mine...
Thanks in advance, Skype is great anyway
sqydpo | Friday, Sep 22
OK I was the one posted the second post on this thread. And i still can't find the $10 free call.
borneofarmer | Saturday, Sep 23
Fake fake fake. I am calling you out skype, This is a fraud. been waiting for 2 days to get my minutes and still haven't seen them, and I am on a MAC and I did download the new app. This is BS. Why won't you respond to my emails, and why won't you answer the posts on this page? Because its a godamn, scam thats why.
varble26 | Saturday, Sep 23
Is it for new customers only?
przemek-f | Saturday, Sep 23
Yep. I'm calling you out too, Skype. Nothing on my page! Come on, play fair!
trib22 | Sunday, Sep 24
I lost count of my number, but I can't figure it out either! It's not that these 10 minutes would cost much - it's just a matter of principle.
scholbs | Sunday, Sep 24
Making false promotions... tss, tss... bad skype !
x-apple | Sunday, Sep 24
Sorry I forgot to let everyone know in my blog post that the promotion ran for 36 hours only from 8am GMT 20th September until 8pm GMT 21st September. The promotion was open to all Mac users, however if you use both Mac and Windows, then you should download the latest version of Skype for Mac to qualify for the promotion.
Sorry to all of those who didn't get their free minutes, watch out as we'll be running more promotions soon and thanks for all your feedback.
nicolariordan | Monday, Sep 25
just to all the haters at the end of the comments it wasn't a false promotion or a scam as i got 10 free mins, all i had to do was sign in to my account and there was a prompter, after getting an email telling me about it and "upgrading to skype 2.0 beta
I'm on a mac powerbook running OSX 10.4.7
random.ink | Monday, Sep 25
I received this email in response to query about how to claim the free minutes:
Please remember there is a ruling in place so that only Mac users get the promotion and the opportunity to redeem the minutes. Please ensure that this promotion is not available in China.
I have checked the logs and see that you have not redeemed the gift.>>
If the offer has run out, then why is it still emblazened on the Skype Website with no mention of time limit? Very misleading. Take the promotion off the website if it's finished!

Why is Skype stonewalling the DTMF tones bug?
Take a look at this series of posts on the SkypeOut forums:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=14141
84 posts, over 14,000 views, no response from Skype. I personally have filed three trouble tickets with Skype and have received no response and no support.
I have posted a negative review of the latest Skype beta here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24474
Simply put, while SkypeOut is great for calling someone to talk, it is usless if you need to access VRS, VM, PBX, conferences, etc.since keying in the numbers on the dial pad fails to generate usable DTMF tones.
Right now I have a very poor regard for Skype and their lack of support and response to litterally a groundswell of user compliants over this one issue.
So I'm not celebrating anything until Skype gets their act together. Who gives a rat's ass if Skype now looks pretty on screen if the basic functionality isn't there?
fogcitynative | Saturday, Oct 7
Hear, hear! It doesn't seem like an oversight anymore. It's more like they do not want to fix this deal-killing problem with their software.
Anyone have an idea why?
blossommerz | Monday, Oct 16
The new UI looks great. There are tons of little things that need fixing, and I wish I worked for Skype, so I could help make these releases top notch, but alas I have to be a backseat designer. *sigh*
We'll go one bug at a time. My biggest issue pre-1.5 was addressed in 1.5 (I contacted the kind people at Skype to make it a priority, so thanks for fixing it).
My biggest gripe with 1.5 is the call-in-progress window. I want it to stay where I put it, and not change size. As it is now, regardless of where it is placed, or what size you make it, the thing reverts to it's odd size, and default placement. I use the keypad frequently, and this is by default not on. So, everytime I make a call and need to use the keypad, I have to click it and then drag the window out, and then move it up, becuase my Dock is covering up part of the pad. Next call I make, it all reverts back and I have to do this over again. it is quite annoying. So, please, allow the user to place the call window where they wish, at the size they like, and have Skype remember and leave it that way. That would be great.
Again, I love the new UI, great effort. I'm eagerly awaiting SMS functionality. I am also very interested in video, but since I use Skype for all my calling needs, I stick with the non-beta version for stability reasons (although I did use the 1.5 beta for some time, as the UI was just too slick to refuse, hard to go back).

I have the same problem as gjarusinsky (posted 22 Sept). I downloaded Skype video for Mac and the maccam driver. My Logitech Quickcam Express displays a picture when I open maccam but when I open Skype video preferences there is no camera to choose from. Skype can't recognize the camera, although it is skype certified. Any help/suggestions???

I have the same problem as gjarusinsky (posted 9/22) and naksosnike (posted 11/3) - I downloaded Skype video for Mac (2.0.0.6)and the maccam driver. My Logitech Quickcam displays a picture when I open maccam but when I open Skype video preferences there is no camera to choose from. Skype can't recognize the camera, although it is skype certified. I don't think the other 2 posts received a response. Please respond.
