All new SMS for Mac
By
Ryan on November 15, 2006 in Skype for Mac.
We’re proud to announce that we’ve just released a new version of Skype for Mac. We’ve worked hard to bring even more features to you and we hope you’re going to like them.
You can now send SMS messages directly from Skype which means that you can always contact friends or family who aren’t online cheaply wherever they are - all you need is some Skype credit and your contacts mobile number and you are ready to go.

We’ve also increased the number of people you can conference call. Now you can talk with up to 9 people at once whether they are Skype or SkypeOut contacts – now there’s no excuse for not letting everyone know what you are up to, all in one go.
We’ve also made it easier to change your audio device settings for different activities within Skype using drop down selections. Hear incoming calls ring through your speakers so even if you’re not at your computer you can still hear your friend calling, then set outgoing calls to be made through your headset.

Download it now and let us know what you think of it by adding comments to this blogpost.
For those that are a little more technical, please check our the Skype for Mac Developer Site where it contains details on how to submit Bug Reports if you so wish.

Comments
Finally you made it.
Great job guys. To all Skype developers and testers!!!

The improvements are welcome, but as a high-end G4 user, I won't be upgrading, because the video quality is still worse than 2.0.0.3. I cannot understand where the insistence on forcing lower resolution video on G4 users comes from, particularly as, in my (admittedly relatively limited) tests, the lower resolution does not deliver any obvious improvement in frame rate.
Please, please, please give us a toggle. Make it non-default, whatever, but at least let us choose.
ickoonite | Wednesday, Nov 15
Looks like a reasonable improvement. While SMS function will be useful it won't come into its own until I can specify a mobile phone number to show as the originator for a message, an option that I note is currently greyed-out but at least I can see it's coming. Beyond this I am very glad about the new audio output option (we've missed quite a few calls due to the headset being plugged in) and the ability to finally change the ringing sound to something that actually sounds like a phone.
kelmon | Wednesday, Nov 15
I just downloaded the new beta to be able to SMS, but I need to verify my number again... Again, because: I allready did so on my windows machine. Is this a computer-based setting, and should one verify again for every computer... or is this a bug and should I report it?
(asked ryan on skype, but he doesn't allow chats from straingers)
roelantkooij | Wednesday, Nov 15
Same question here. I cannot seem to be able to send the verification code to my mobile number.
capkapak | Wednesday, Nov 15
I have one problem in that when I imported all my contacts from my address book (in the previous version of skype), all the numbers started with a 0, and skype just appended +44 to the beginning instead of doing the smart thing of removing the leading 0 and then appending the +44. It means that SMS messages go into the ether, even so you can make a call to the device. I can't even edit a contacts phone number, even so I can rename them (unless there is some unobvious way of doing it). In fact looking at my call and SMS log it would appear that skype is doing this adjustment for call, but not SMS. This really needs to be sorted out.
If the number you want to send the SMS to isn't in your address book then you type it in and you get the options to add to contacts or call this number, why not add sms this number?
Mind you, it is great to get the SMS functionality on the Mac.
shaunmsmcdonald | Wednesday, Nov 15
Ok, just to recap previous comments on the same subject and to explain my situtation (hopefully useful to other people too): under Preferences->SMS, I chose to send my phone number as the sender ID (instead of my skype name); obviously this setting was grayed out until I sent the verification code to my mobile and entered it back on the field below (labeled something like "insert the code you received on your mobile here").
I entered it and everything seemed well, the "send my phone number as message ID" option was selected and no more greyed out: the problem is that, although I passed the verification procedure, the SMS I send are marked by my skype name and not by my phone number...
Italy is not on the list of the known countries where this service is not available, and I heard similar reports from other european users too; what can I do (apart from waiting for a stable 2.5)?
thank you, bye
mrk_eu | Wednesday, Nov 15
Awesome. The ringing issue was really annoying me too. But I agree with ickoonite on the video quality issue. Make the quality selectable. You seriously think a G5 can't handle the higher resolution!?
newkai | Wednesday, Nov 15
Quick work! Well done!
I've verified my phone and the preferences says it is sending as my mobile, but the received messages don't contain the number data - I'm unable to reply from the mobile to which the message is sent. Or am I being too impatient and the settings have to propagate before they can be used?
Keep up the good work!
robert.m0vpg | Wednesday, Nov 15
The video resolution has been changed in the Beta to also be higher.
Quote form the changelog "change: video resolution for G5 machines is now the same as Intel machines (increased)".

where has the menu for the so-called emoticons gone? I don't remember all the short cuts...

Another high-end G4 user who won't be upgrading due to the video resolution shenanigans. My machine worked just fine with 2.0.0.3 and the picture was clear with a decent framerate.
I have absolutely no problem with you defaulting the resolution to low on pre-G5s, but for goodness sake give us the option.
angstweevil | Wednesday, Nov 15
I agree with ickoonite and angstweevil on the video quality issue. Consider how many of us use a laptop, and that Apple never made G5 powerbook.
My G4 1.33 1.25GB RAM works great with Skype 2.0.0.3. I will use it unless you will make the quality selectable.
darkman76 | Wednesday, Nov 15
I stand corrected, I should have checked the change log... Video resolution is up for G5s, but still down for G4s... Which is still unfortunate! Add an option setting please!
newkai | Wednesday, Nov 15
Impressive pace, keep it up! HOWEVER...
I can't even connect with this build. See here:

I have to chime in about the video quality for PowerPC and especially PowerBook users... Please add a preference to select the desired resolution. Or even better, optimize the video rendering engine so that it's not so piggy.
ipodlove.com | Thursday, Nov 16
Yet another G4 user who would love it if you allowed selectable resolution on our machines.
adamleebray | Thursday, Nov 16
I'm with everyone else...no way I am using a version newer than 2.0.0.3 until I get a higher quality video option for my PPC G4.
skrysko | Thursday, Nov 16
For those that are having trouble with SMS, we have published a user guide here
For those wishing to send SMS as your own number, please ensure in Preferences -> SMS you have selected 'My mobile phone number' if you have done this, best place is to talk about it on the forums
And as far as the Video Quality, I'm sorry it's not yet resolved for G4 users, but trust me, we are working hard to improve this situation.
ryanhunt | Thursday, Nov 16
Hi there. This looks great. I have recently moved from PC to Mac. In Skype for PC there was auto answer but it doesn't appear to be in the Mac version. Is this correct? If not, can we expect it?T hanks, Andrew, Sydney, Australia
steyne | Thursday, Nov 16
Well I'm thinking of downgrading again. I had to log in to Skype when I started it up this morning, even though I had it set to remember my details and the SMS preferences hasn't retained my mobile phone number so I have to verify it again if I want to use it. I don't want to have to do this every time I log in or want to send SMS. This needs some attention before I'll be trying it again. Less pleased than I was yesterday
robert.m0vpg | Thursday, Nov 16
steyne, there sure is: Select Skype from the Menu Bar, then Preferences, then the Calls Icon. You should see an option to select to 'Auto Answer Calls'.
robert.m0vpg: do you mean it did not remember your SMS number from Windows, or another Mac? SMS sender number is saved on the computer locally, so you will need to re-verify it each time you move computes.
ryanhunt | Thursday, Nov 16
Ryan, thanks for the feedback. It was on the same Mac. I suspect one of the plist files was corrupt as I had login problems when I downgraded to the non-beta version. I'll give it another go.
Worth noting, and not something that I saw a warning about, that you get charged each time you verify your mobile number
robert.m0vpg | Thursday, Nov 16
You're very welcome robert.m0vpg. I just double checked and there is a message in the SMS Preferences in regards to you being charged to verify your number. It says "You will be charged the standard rate to authorize this number"
ryanhunt | Thursday, Nov 16
Everything seems to be working fine but I have a question about the changed interface. Now in the history one has to click on each call to see its date, time and duration whereas before it was always visible. This allowed one to take a partial screensnap of a large segment of the history for billing and other purposes. Any way around this and if not what would be the difficulty in reverting to the old way given that you have added such irrelevant bells and whistles as the animated transition to and from the history?
observe.design | Thursday, Nov 16
I like the new audio-options in theory, but on my mac 10.3.9 the "ringing"-option doesn't show. Just the speaker-icon to the right of it.
Oh well..
Normal calling is less expensive using skype than an ordinary phone, here in Norway.
Skype, on the other hand, costs about twice the price I pay when sending an sms from my cell-phone. And that's without a monthly fee aswell. 0,40 NOK is a normal price for an SMS. Skype charges about 0,80 NOK.
groogerlend | Thursday, Nov 16
*** PLEASE BRING BACK THE HISTORY WINDOW!!!!!
I downloaded the beta, and was happy about SMS, but then saddened as it can not receive a reply! Also, while it says the cost is less than one penny to sms a UK number, I got charged 10 cents. I use another program to send SMS's, and was hoping Skype was going to release a solution with 2-way messaging. Maybe in the future.
My biggest issue with this is the history window (or lack of!!!). WHAT ON EARTH happened to the history window? Now it's stuffed into the contact list, I see no way to separate it, it doesn't list the date or time of anything unless you click on each item individually, and lumps calls and chats into one blob! This is an utter atrocity! It was perfect before! Why was it changed? For goodness sake please make an option to use the working one instead of this new fangled joke. I make tons of calls and have to reference the history frequently. I don't even see a way to search within it anymore. So, again, PLEASE BRING BACK the old history window, it was PERFECT. THANK YOU!

Can someone tell me how I can get hold of 2.0.0.3 please ? I deleted it when I downloaded 2.0.0.6 thinking everything will be better !

It is a great feature that we can now send SMS, but only confine to alphabet is being not good enough as I am looking forward to be able to send chinese or even japanese character.
yuwekiat | Saturday, Nov 18
Hmm. Am I correct in saying that the caller is shown my mobile number if I write an SMS? I sent several and got replies back immediately to my mobile. I do think SMS should be two way to be any use though, otherwise this is a pretty pointless update.
Is SKYPE now available for download for Symbian / NOKIA N series phones? I notice it is provided on the Nokia N73 built in via THREE in the UK?! Where can I download it for my N series phone?

Well done, now the only thing I miss is the ability to use an IRC-style chat with a shorter timestamp, such as:
[15:40:21] hello there
[15:40:23] what's up?
[15:40:34] hey, i'm relaxing after work
[15:40:55] cool
Even using a form such as:
(15:40:21) foo: hello there
(15:40:23) foo: what's up?
(15:40:34) bar: hey, i'm relaxing after work
(15:40:55) foo: cool
would be sweet. It would be much more concise and definitely easier to understand when cut and pasted than the current style.

Hello there,
Using Skype 2.5 on MS-Windows, one has the option to SMS mobile numbers which are not part of his contacts, such as SMS -> +41 79 111 11 11 -> some text -> send. Is such a function planned for 2.5 Mac release, or shall one edit one of his contact by changing the mobile number in the address book to any number one wishes to SMS?

Quick Question:
Why would I want to pay to send an SMS via Skype when AOL Instant Messenger offers this service for free? (I'm asking genuinely).
+15551234567 will get a message sent on a mac through iChat, and the recipient can reply.
So why does this cost money?
joshtish | Sunday, Nov 19
Josh,
try and send an SMS to any country aside from the US or Canada with AIM and you'll see why SMS with Skype is useful.
Skype..osx | Monday, Nov 20
Hi ehfstandtall,
You sure can - click on the 'Call Ordinary Phones' button down the bottom, and you will see a SMS Icon right next to the Call button. Doing this will allow you to send SMS to contacts not on your list.
ryanhunt | Monday, Nov 20
Hej ryanhunt,
1. Thank you for the hint! The feature is rather hidden comparing to MS-Windows version. However, I am truly cheerful that finally skype SMS works for Mac
2. I tested it and it works, also the history works just in a unified way just as Call History.
3. Although it is on of the function which is least used in SMS usecases: How does a single SMS send to a list telephone numbers (known as group SMS) not belonging to skype contacts work? I tried: Add Recepient ... but it allows only addition of skype contacts. Right?
Many thanks and cheers!

Uhmm I dont know... I really don't like the new design of the Skype Mac 2 and 2.5 beta... I had to go on limewire to download the Skype Mac 1.5 - I just like that design as opposed to the new one.
Is there a way to keep that old design of the 1.5 on the new 2.0 or 2.5? If not I think I will wait until Skype MAc 3 or 4 comes out when hopefully everything will look much better

1) Will a Palm like the LifeDrive (has Wifi) allow me to make Skype calls?
2) Is there Skype Software for Palms or just Pocket PC's?

Well, it looks great, but I'm still having to stick with 2.003 because that's the last version with usable video on my G4 1.67 (the old video quality worked great - the new one is HORRIBLE). Please, please put high quality video back for G4 users - we're locked out of all new versions. A simple high / low video quality switch in the preferences would do it! Thank you!

Really enjoy Skype, good work.
The possibility to send messages to numbers that are not in the contact list would be nice.. Or am I one of those who just cannot find it?
besides that, I verified my number with a PC before, pity that I would have to do it again.
Keep up the good work.

conalho | Wednesday, Nov 29
I'm reasonably pleased with 2.5.0.38 but, as with many others, video quality is not equal to the rest of the application.
Those of us with an iSight webcam know that better quality is possible with iChat or Yahoo! Messenger and version 2.0.0.3 was quite good and there was no terrible lag for me.
Please consider adding a slider and possibly a resolution switch to allow the users to choose. I'm not expecting overnight improvement but I know that better video and good speed are possible at the same time.
Thanks for all of your hard work! Skype is a great application.
bousozoku | Wednesday, Nov 29
Ok, so I've just downloaded the sms beta version, and given it a go. Firstly, I have verified my mobile phone with skype, but it still shows my skype name, not my number when I send a message to the recipient. Secondly, what exactly is the point of this sms service when the recipient can't return my message via skype? Is this correct? Is this going to change in the future? I Just don't see the point in using skype to send an sms when i still need to have the mobile phone on my desk to read my replies!
Is it just me, or is this completely pointless?
Anyway, other than that, I must commend skype for there speed and support in developing mac versions of there software. The calls & video calls work perfectly!
Cheers guys!

my big question is: what took you so long? why should mac users wait? and is there any chance of putting a history tab on the mac one like on pcs? so i can see if my sms's have sent... without going through a whole website and that...
thanks, but next time look after us first eh! there's a beer in it if youse do!
rroorryyjj | Thursday, Nov 30
> but it still shows my skype name, not my number when I send a message to the
> recipient
This a known issue to Skype team. It will be supported in the final version. However, it would have been wise to document this, and not to let user verify their telephone number when the function is not ready yet. But wait for the final release and it will work, as it already does on Skype for Windows 2.5 final.
> Secondly, what exactly is the point of this sms service when the recipient
> can't return my message via skype? Is this correct?
On the one hand, I understand your point as a user. However, some understanding of how telecommunication work would have helpped you not to get dissapointed. To get and SMS back you need a *valid* telephone number which operator can use to reply to the SMS. So, if you do not want to use a mobile phone to receive an SMS, you need to buy a SkypeIn number, which will hopefully support not only call in but also SMS in. There are some providors who enable users to send SMS to skype user: http://www.netsms.ch/skype/ http://www.connectotel.com/sms/skype.html. Again, everyone has a mobile so it is more convenient to wait until Skype 2.5 is final for Mac.
Keep being optimistic
Cheers,
ehfStandTall

Hi Ryan,
Wow, I'm really enjoying the new version of Skype for Mac. Its so awesome being able to SMS my friends about going snowboarding and stuff. But I do have one question for you in particular, how would I go about creating a half man, half monkey?
danborenstein | Sunday, Dec 3
I will second the call above to fix the DTMF tones. They just do not work reliably... this makes SkypeOut useless for calling the large number of companies who have automated systems that have to be navigated using DTMF tones before you get to speak to a real person.

Will it be possible to SMS to my skype-in number ? Maybe not now - maybe sometime in the future ? (I have a London skype in number)
dialogue.ag | Wednesday, Dec 6
Thank you for the "New" beta for Mac. The sound is better, the SMS is really handy and the whole program just seems to work better. I'm not quite sure what the problem is with everyone. This is a "free" download and the Skype tec's actually work out problems and answer real questions.
I'm looking forward to your next upgrade. Thanks a lot.
alanmerwin | Thursday, Dec 7
The ringing option is not really useful for me, because even if my usb headset is connected I can have the call ringing in my speakers if I select in the sound preferences the line-out as an output (speakers getting sound from line-out), while in skype preferences the input and output can continue to be my usb headset. It works.
I don't understand how can it be helpful for users who leave a regular earphone headset plugged in the line-out. If they have speakers I'm sure they have to be connected throught the line-out, so it's either the headset or the speakers connected right? You won't miss a call that way...
The other option is when people is using an external soundcard to deliver sound to speakers. And if that's the case, the option is not really needed because it can be done already without showing it in skype prefs as I said before using mac's sound preferences. I don't know if I explain myself.
I guess it's just a way of doing it easily without having knowlegde of sound routing?
Anyway I really appreaciate the sms option. And I hope it gets better with the sender id issue. Keep un the good work!

Am thoroughly enjoying the SMS features and have already gone through a good $16AUD of recharge using them, hehe. Have validated my mobile number but it still seems to send it from my Skype name and receivers are not able to respond. It is still cheaper than any other web-based sms service I've come across, and I enjoy using Skype as both my home phone as well as to send texts.
Haven't used the webcam feature yet, so can't comment on that (as I am on a Powerbook G4 like some people who have expressed concern).
Any thoughts on when we are getting Skypecasts and some of the other Windows-only features for Mac?

Hey everyone, just a heads up that we've updated the beta today with a new version (2.5.0.63). It's still the same download link, but has plenty of fixes/improvements. To note, we've increased the resolution of Video on (faster) G4 machines to that of Intel and G5 machines. Enjoy!
- Ryan.
ryanhunt | Thursday, Dec 14
And "faster" is equal to what? My 800MHz G4 box handled the old video resolution just fine.
You really don't want to make it an option do you? Why's that?
angstweevil | Thursday, Dec 14
Thanks to all the Mac users that have posted. I'll stick to the 2.0.0.6 release until I see more people raving the 2.5 release. They have a valid point! (and Skype, please keep-up the good work! I've been very pleased with my 2.0.0.6 release)
wmrockwell | Friday, Dec 15
2.5 doesn't seem very good. The video is grainy, choppy and slow. Ichat seems a far superior program for video chat - it even handles the full-duplex on open microphones with far more sophistication than Skype can. With every upgrade, Skype for Mac continues to dissapoint. Maybe given enough time, they will get it right.
Audio calls and telephony on skype are superb. It appears that video is a cheap afterthought, a bone to toss to the most vocal users. I wish you had not caved to public demand and kept working on it until you got it right. When an AOL product is lapping you in sophistication and quality, it's time to be very embarrassed.
Also, a specific question - I purchased the "Skype Certified" logitech USB headset. Whenever I plug it in or start Skype, Skype refuses to use the headset, prefering the internal laptop mic and speakers. Is this what it takes to be Skype certified?
Ok I'm done with my complaints. I do like Skype, don't get me wrong, but it's only good at one thing - very inexpensive international voice calls.
stevellano | Sunday, Dec 17
You guys are harsh! I'm on a 1.0GHz G4... Apparently that's 0.25GHz too slow! Please... Give us the option! I don't care if I supposedly am using 80% of my processor when doing video calling... I want the better quality!
Otherwise, great work! I'm really looking forward to a 3.0 Beta though which lets me access group chats!

Hi
i'd like to give my sisters a webcam for xmas. they have macs (i don't know which, but at least 3-4 years old) but i can't afford two Isights.
i am moving to france, from the u.s., soon, so it'll be used mainly for video calls. I'd prefer to use Skype (though the reviews of the latest version aren't stellar).
i don't want it to be a big hassle for them-- they aren't real tech saavy. That's the beauty of Macs(which god i hope i can afford soon so i can throw this pc out the window).
I have some Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000s i bought, but it sounds like it could be a pain to set up.
I'd like advice on:
1. the best 3rd party camera to use
2. step-by-step instructions on how to set it up that i can give them along with the camera
3. how it and skype perform on international video calls.
thanks!
happy holidays

I believe the QuickCam Pro 5000s is directly supported. I have its predecessor, the 4000. Check http://www.logitech.com .
All they should need to do is plug it in and then check it out under Skype Preferences.

About using an old webcam:
Your old ones should work if you download "macam" from sourceforge. I am using a really old one, made by an obscure company and it works great after downloading that program.
Do a search for it on Google. As your sisters do not seem to be tech savvy, they won't know the difference between a new one and an old one anyway!!

Hmm. Will we ever get hotkeys (that work in fullscreen apps, for example)?
ebh-thefish | Wednesday, Dec 27
stephanect,
It's 180 days actually, and it looks like SMS also extends the expiry date.
The best thing is if you check it for yourself on https://secure.skype.com/store/myaccount/overview.html
For example I've sent an SMS on December 27 while my last call was made on December 17 and my balance expires on June 27, 2007...
You don't have to worry about the expiry date...

Péter

Hi Ryan,
When may we expect the non-Beta 2.5 for Mac? I've just read the fixes/improvements for 2.5.0.63, and found that you've fixed one of my oldest problems: We use two accounts on my Mac but Skype does not seem to remember the other account... I'm pretty new to Mac and I thought I did something wrong... Now I know it was just a bug...
Maybe you could help me to solve my other problem: How do I attach a Skype button to my signature file? I use Mail, and I try to follow the description on the website but the text I attach does not want to turn into a lovely green button...
Regards,
Péter

Since i've updated my Skype to 2.5 beta, Skype didn't ring anymore. I was looking forward to be able to switch between my headphones and the speakers, but instead non of them make any noise. Calling people is still posible, but any other sounds? No.

Was thinking of Signing Up by Jan 18th but Now my Skye Browser account here says that I can't make any Calls so I'm Wondering if this is an accidental result of the Mac Beta version here that I've been trying Out ? This type of action sure makes Users like me nervous to Sign Up when unexpected happenings happen which is like the Service being sidcontinued after we Sign Up 7 Send $ Cash money & expect to have Service continue for a year if we Send $ Cash before the end of the month to save on a years sign up Credit Fee for Canada & USA only...

Hello! Skype is improving, greatly! I'd like to know when can we expect you to develop and release new versions (both for PC and Mac users) at the same time? Why it takes the team so long to write the Mac Skype?
For example, new 3.0 Skype for PC has many great features, and I emphasise the PUBLIC CHAT feature that we Apple users cannot nor join or start!

I agree with oljadesic!
Additional problem is that Win users seem to have different emoticons available.
It often happens that my gf sends me (Win) an emoticon which is unknown in my Mac Skype version.
Both having the latest version of Skype.

Pretty hacked off here - just had a chance to try the new 2.5.0.63 beta, which supposedly supports higher resolution for my G4 (1.5GHz 12" PB G4)...AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK! Now I'm torn, because I want to send SMS messages, but not since 2.0.0.6 has the video quality been any good.
Make it an option, PLEASE! Why is this so hard to do?

HI,
I am really liking Skype, it's what keeps my long distance relationship going. I was wondering when the option of showing my mobile number on outgoing texts would start working. Thanks. Ronald

Gosh, this was posted in November. Of 2006. Yeah.
Gee wiz, can't you give us a bit more of an update? We are midway through January of 2007.

Oh, and, BETA 3.0 would be very nice. Just hinting.

The ability to change inbound microphone volume for individual callers would be nice. It's on the windows version, but not the mac.

Hi - I am a physician from the US doing medical work in Ethiopia and Israel. I have an Israeli based cell phone and for whatever reason am unable to verify my number. I have tried every permutation of international calling numbers possible and can't understand what the problem is. I belive it is supposed to be +921(cell code and then number). Otherwise, I am very impressed with the recent upgrade. Thanks for the help.

To the person asking about foreign languages, I've been texting in Russian and it works fine. Also the reply-to to my phone worked fine after validating it (had to switch the SMS card into a different phone that could read cyrillic characters though, but that ain't Skype's fault). Really this service is outstanding.

Hi,
I love the Beta 2.5.063 but when I send sms messages to a T-Mobile number in the States, my cell number doesn't show - it shows some random 5 digit number. When I txt within Germany it works fine and my number shows as the reply-to. Is this a carrier related issue? Help! I need this to work. Thanks!

Hi Divinetta,
If you take a look at this page you'll see that sending numbers in the US will not appear to come from your cell/mobile/handy number. (Scroll right down to the bottom)
- Ryan.

MAC's SPEAKERS WILL NOT RING WHILST LOGITECH USB 350 HEADSET IS PLUGGED IN. I have downloaded Beta 2.5.0.63 three times to an eMacG4/1GHZ running OS 10.3.9 and there is no 3 rd option under Prefs/Audio to enable this. To check I downloaded 2.0.0.6 to a Power Mac G3/400 running OS 10.4.8 and still no 3rd option to allow the PC speakers to ring whilst the headset is plugged in. The only options displayed are for 'Audio Output" and "Audio Input" but not "Ringing". I find this very strange. Especially Beta 2.5.0.63 not having the 3rd option. It makes detecting incoming calls whilst not wearing the headset impossible. This despite Ryan downloading the Beta and being able to see the 3rd option...as shown in the announcement above. I wonder if this is caused in the installation of the Skype icon after a download into Applications. Do you drag the Skype Icon in the big blue "Window" or the Skype icon on the Desktop? The instructions are not crystal clear. 22 Jan 2007.

I'm bored with this beta... Anyone want to bet when 3.0 Beta is going to come out? My guess is February 20.

Just downloaded the new Beta for Mac with SMS capability, great stuff, about time! Just one request: I am a Navigator, often working ofshore for prolonged periods and although I have hi-speed internet, i am often left without cell phone coverage for days/weeks at a time. Would be great if there was a way for friends & family to reply to my SMS messages direct to my online skype account, maybe through Skypein? If there is a way, could someone please let me know!
Many thanks

Further to my previous entry, I have recieved the SMS verification code on my cell phone, however I cant for the life of me carry out step 2: Entering the code!
I type the code in, however I am unable to click 'Submit'. Any ideas??
Many thanks and much appreciation for your assistance!
robbie_wilkinson | Friday, Jan 26
Hi Robbie,
Unfortunately at this time we are unable to provide this service - receiving SMS messages in on your SkypeIn number, but I know it's something we'd love to do, so keep checking back to skype.com. As far as you being unable to click 'Submit' silly question - do you have credit? If you do and it's still not working, can I suggest you log a support ticket (from your mac) here?

Two things:
1) My Skype seems to crash alot now? Weird..
2) Uhm when I'm on voice chat with someone, you can hear a "PSCHT" sound that it really loud and hurts your ears whenever its just on call. No, it's not my microphone because it happens with 2-3 of my computers at my house with skype and all have different microphones. I've heard other people have this problem when they have this version of Skype. Any way to fix this? Its a real problem.
