Upgrade for the best call quality (and tell all your friends)

By My status Andrus on June 21, 2007 in General.

As you may have read from the general blog, Skype has begun a revolutionary transition to technology that will offer you even better call quality. Naturally this affects Skype for Mac, too. We recommend you to upgrade (if you haven't already done so) and tell other users to upgrade along with you. This will ensure you have the best call quality possible. You see, older versions of Skype are using older technology that doesn’t speak as well with the newer stuff. This results in sound quality that, well, doesn’t sound as good. So consider this a time of positive change and download the most recent version of Skype for Mac.

Where can I post a comment to scold the naughty Skypecast developers for forcing us Mac users out of the Skypecast picture?

quietpanther | Friday, Jun 22

quietpanther, we're working on it. Updates will be posted on Heartbeat blog

I caled my dad to test the latest build before. After crashing both our computers I deleted the .plist and reinstalled without fuss.

I was trying to explain to him that this new build was now better quality and ironically he couldn't hear me.

since i have the last version on my mac sometimes the ringing does not stop after a connection is established, it keeps going during the talking but only on my side, the others can't hear the nonstop ringing?????? it's only when i call....

Will the VOIP841 firmware be updated to use the same technology soon? Since I upgraded my mac to this new version, I find the call quality is terrible when Skype calling contacts who use VOIP841 phones...

headjar | Friday, Jun 29

I cannot install the latest update. Every time I try I get a message saying "you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". Wish someone can tell me how to fix this.

Like happy_martin1979, after I upgraded the people I call can't hear me. I sent in a support request, but no answer yet. How common is this??

I upgraded to the latest version and told my brother (on Windows XP) to do the same.
The quality of the video was awful and the sound only slightly improved. The new version lasted for one call before I trashed it and reinstalled the old version I was using before (Beta 2.0.0.3).
On the Windows side I must say that I no longer hear myself speak when talking to my brother. His new version successfully suppresses the echo. (My brother refuses to wear headphones.) So there's an improvement there!

I've been having major issues with the latest upgrade as well. It keeps cutting out on me - a conversation will begin then they will freeze and come back, then I will freeze and come back and then it cuts us off. We've both had out internet connections checked and everything is fine. It's quite frustrating. I'm really really tired of seeing "Connection Lost."

I am running Mac OS-X10.4.10 on my new MacBook Pro, and trying to call my Dad on a Windows XP machine. The picture quality is at best poor, and the sound will drop out to a loud crackling buzz about every 30 seconds. I have to pause and un-pause the call to retrieve the sound on the call, or hang up and recall altogether. I've had lines checked and supposedly there is no problems. I thought this type of technology was now 'established', and that the faults would have been ironed out. I know Mac users are generally an afterthought but I am thinking of reverting to MSN Messenger as this is just shoddy.

warren_clare_cox | Friday, Aug 3

warren_clare_cox, are you both on latest versions of Skype?

andruspurde | Monday, Aug 6

happy_martin1979 and snowcreative: I have the same. What a shame I did the upgrading as before it was perfect, ok rudimentary but video and audio were ok with everyone, and now this 30 sec of 'connexion lost" where the audio it's just impossible

gosh! who and when will fix this?

bertatruyols | Thursday, Aug 23

I cannot upgrade to the lastest version because I don't have sufficient privileges. Could someone post a solution here? Thanks.

bibichoa | Sunday, Sep 2

bibichoa: you need to be running an account with Admin privileges in order to install software on your Mac. If you are sharing someone elses machines, ask them to install the update or tick "allow user to administer this computer" against your account in System Preferences>Accounts

I have the same problem as the others above: "I cannot install the latest update. Every time I try I get a message saying "you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". Wish someone can tell me how to fix this."

Please post an explanation of how to resolve this.

hm..just downloaded the most recent public version 2.6.0.184 - but when calling out to a cell - I can't hear the caller, and the caller can't hear me. We've tried contacting each other several times - the call goes thru - I can hear him, but he can't hear me. I don't know how to go back to the previous version - can someone help me out? I use skype as my phone - can't do with ppl not hearing me.

thx

hmm..just now have downloaded the new beta version, and same problem.. I'm at a coffee shop, maybe they've blocked that aspect of the conx for their customers.. won't be coming back to that place again. :(

Hey great site and usefulness.

Anyone here knows how to RECORD conversations on Skype?
I have really great consultations that I would like to record and not have to 'tape' the old fashioned way.

Cheers from the warm Antipodes.. where we have Christmas on the beach, or out in the back yard in the warmth.

ahdenis | Friday, Dec 28

How can you tell if a user has blocked you on the screen?

thomasrappl2 | Wednesday, Feb 6

I have the same problem as the others above: "I cannot install the latest update. Every time I try I get a message saying "you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". which is nuts as my account settings are on admin rights
