Skype 2.7 for Mac Beta with Contact Groups and Address Book integration

By My status Ryan on August 15, 2007 in Skype for Mac.

We thought you’d like to know that we’ve released Skype 2.7 for Mac beta. You are very welcome to download and start playing with it.

contact%20groups.png
Now you can organise your contacts into as many groups as you need. While there are some pre-defined groups (like Online, Recently Contacted, Address Book Contacts), you’re free to add new ones that suit your life. This is very useful to those who are very popular and have a contact list with hundreds of people. Explore this feature under the cogwheel icon Cogwheel.png on the main screen and selecting 'Show Contact Groups'. See the user guide.

Here's what else is new:

* See your Apple Address Book contacts in Skype - easily call or SMS anyone who has a phone number in their address-book profile. When sending a SMS, just make sure the number you're sending to can receive SMS.
* Create and manage public chats by clicking on Chats in the menu bar and choosing Start Public Chat. A public-chat assistant will walk you through the necessary steps.
* Auto Redial for busy or unconnected calls. When your call hits the busy signal, Skype will give you the option of automatic redial every two minutes until the call goes through. This setting can also be adjusted in Skype > Preferences > Calls.
* Easy sound controls – when you need to tweak the sound level during a call, use a simple slider in the call window, or change your device by clicking this icon. CallVolumeSettingsSmall.png
* Overhauled file transfer – wearing a more fashionable jacket, file-transfer now looks elegant and acts even nicer, especially when receiving many files at once

Download Skype 2.7 for Mac beta here

Oh, and one last thing: if the default language on your Mac is Czech or Norwegian, Skype 2.7 Mac beta will automatically follow suit.

Address Book integration is not perfect yet.

There is no option in the Skype context menu "Add to Address Book".

Also, the whole Address Book is shown in Skype. What I would rather have is a chance to add a label "Skype" in Address Book, so that only those contacts that have a Skype number are shown in Skype window.

Otherwise, all my hundreds of contacts are shown in Skype.

Thank you for thinking about Skype users

andreidrynov | Wednesday, Aug 15

Apologies, I was not right: sorting by Kind helps to group contacts

andreidrynov | Wednesday, Aug 15

In fact, you can right-click on a contact in Address Book and select

Dial with Skype
Send SMS with Skype

Well done, guys! Now Skype is perfect on Mac platform

andreidrynov | Wednesday, Aug 15

Sorry andreidrynov but we've been able to dial and send SMS from the Mac Address book for ages so that's nothing new.

Anyway thanks Skype for finally giving us contact grouping and Public Chat creation. It feels like we're really getting somewhere now.

akelsall | Wednesday, Aug 15

I've had time to have a little play with it now and whilst it's an improvement I still think it needs contact consolidation. I don't want to see Joe Bloggs several times in a group because he has more than one phone number. If only it could be like Adium which can consolidate contacts when they have more than IM account.

akelsall | Wednesday, Aug 15

I can't work out how to create groups. I click on a contact, get the drop down menu, click on add to group and ...

... nothing :-(

Anyone else having this trouble?

robert.m0vpg | Wednesday, Aug 15

The address book is not added under the menu: Manage Skype Api clients.
I can view all the others added like Free-1 usb phone etc. I can't manage address book to allow or not to use Skype application.
Can you help me??

lecorbusier10 | Wednesday, Aug 15

Instructions would be nice. I'm having troube finding the "Group" feature or the integration with Address Book feature. I know it's not "Import Contacts", as I already went through that nightmare once before. Any help?

zetrindade | Wednesday, Aug 15

what about real brazilian portuguese translation?

garfolino | Thursday, Aug 16

Thanks for the new version. When do you think that it'll be possible to use double identity with the same skype connection?

zaratesaudente | Thursday, Aug 16

what if i don't want to import all my address book contacts or if i want to remove them from Skype ? I cannot do it now ?!!
thanks.

fresbee55 | Thursday, Aug 16

Getting all the contact numbers from the Address Book is a great addition and was greatly needed. There was a slight bug when I first started, as I had manually added my Address Book contact numbers on the previous version. This Beta version automatically added them again, which is fare enough- I just deleted my old versions, but then I found the same old versions listed again at the top of my list above my Skype contacts. When I tried to remove one, it wouldn't. When I quit Skype and re-opened it, they had gone, and I was left with just the ones I should have. I would prefer the Address Book contacts numbers listing to be improved- ie have one name, and then click the name to see that contacts numbers. As it is, I have many contacts listed two or three times for their different home, work, or mobile numbers, and this can make for a very long list.
Good improvements though. Keep 'em coming.

wastedyuthe | Thursday, Aug 16

Following on from my previous post above, it also seems a little silly that I have the same person as a Skype contact, then as an Address Book contact below it. Shouldn't there be a way to integrate contacts so you can click on one name, then either contact them on their home number, work number, mobile number, or Skype them? Wouldn't that be easier?

wastedyuthe | Thursday, Aug 16

I had no luck installing 2.7. It did not work on my MacBookPro and not on my Mac Pro. On the latter the securityd crashed when starting skype the first which resultet in a completely f**ed up OS (keychain did not work anymore). I had to do a hard reset!

I removed 2.7 with the 2.6 version but since then I can't log into Skype anmore, it just hangs. Bummer, I don't know how to fix this.

My recommendation: DO NOT INSTALL SKYPE 2.7! You risk messing up your entire installation.

gnaegi | Thursday, Aug 16

I'm not that crazy about the update, to be quite honest. I suppose there are still issues that need to be sorted, for example, it keeps changing my status to offline/invisible without prompt. Anyone else having this problem? So, until this is sorted, I would revert to the old version!

kagbalatee | Thursday, Aug 16

Yes, I'm having problems with Skype keeping me in offline/invisible status, both on a iBook G4 and intel iMac.

mattm_uk | Thursday, Aug 16

Some users may experience problems signing in at the time of writing this. This issue does not relate to 2.7 Beta release and is being investigated. For fresh updates see http://heartbeat.skype.com/

andruspurde | Thursday, Aug 16

Its not mac only. My PC can't log in either.

m3nut1969 | Thursday, Aug 16

Not had the time to read all the above, but the new contact groups are not great.

Surely there is logic in modifying the whole concept of Skype conacts to something more resembling an address book?

For eg a single contact should have multiple options for contacting them?

A skype name (or more than one) + a land line, cell phone or even multiples. The default would then be to contact them as skype to skype, followed by a user defined ranking of other numbers within each contact?

Nothing is more irritating than having four contacts for a single person.

nick_w_b | Thursday, Aug 16

I'm not happy with this version.
It takes 3 minutes to log me in (after it's launched & running), then all I see is my eBay customers (from my Address Book), my contacts are gone.
I uncheck "Show Address Book Contacts" and boom the app crashes, 3 more mins to wait.
Then without me doing anything special, after just a minute I'm logged off - 3 mins to wait, and again quickly logged off after a while.

It seems that with every new version some things go better and some other go worse, and those that go worse never get better again.
See forum thread http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=92856

similitudes | Thursday, Aug 16

There are a lot of problems with the Skype network today, I can't seem to stay online on Skype for more than a second whichever account and whichever type of installation (mac, mac beta or windows), even the skype website is going slowly for me.

I think we should leave official testing until the Skype network is a little more stable, because at the moment we can't tell whether it is 2.7 beta that is going wrong or the network (I really think most problems are due to the network though).

Many thanks for this update, I can't wait until Skype 3.0 for Mac.

daniel.lewis | Thursday, Aug 16

I can not sign in with this beta version... the wheel keeps on turning but nothing happens...

yumiluc | Thursday, Aug 16

hmm... I think it's the network that's having problems.. i don't think it's the beta that's causing trouble. I tried several versions like daniel did and NOTHING

tung.t.i. | Thursday, Aug 16

Yeh I was having troubles with the network, same with my friend, taking forever to sign in, when it does then doesn't let me choose status, just off line.

Anyway about the beta, much better just need video conferencing now.

dalefallows | Thursday, Aug 16

all phone numbers from address book are useless if they don't have the country code in address book............ so you'd have to add that code to every number in address boook, but then the number might give problems with other apps...

rejoen | Thursday, Aug 16

Issues - upgraded to the bata. Incoming calls go to voice mail but do not show up in skype. old voice mail messages can not be retrieved either - Displays loading. Basically I lost all phone service.

Skip that!!! Old version currently has the same issues.

ledbetter.tom | Thursday, Aug 16

What I'd like to see are three things:
1. Seeing my address book groups as Skype groups - manually recreating them is not a useful use of my time
2. Contact consolidation (which with the address book as a master database should be really easy) - show a contact and then underneath his Skype status and telephone numbers
3. Online status of a Skype user in address book and other applications using the address book, such as mail.app (which Outlook users have had for a long time)

peter.berlich | Thursday, Aug 16

It would be nice to be able to select either the whole address book or a separate group to be displayed in skype -- eg. I am maintaining an "active contacts" list which is about 20 % of all my contacts in my address book ... these are the ones I want to see in Skype, not all the other 80 % ...

ptroxler | Thursday, Aug 16

I don't know what is happening, I can't sign in Skype and it took a lot of time, I'm using a MacBook and a last version of Skype. Until yesterday I had no problems with sign it.

Can somebody of Skype team tell us what is happening?

I will appreciate help.

jroquef | Thursday, Aug 16

Hi folks! Thanks for all your comments about Address Book comments.

The reason why we display contacts as Name (Home) or Name (Work) is because currently if you add a SkypeOut (I.e ordinary phone number) number to your list, you can only have one number per name. We did it this way to make it easier to be able to then add these contacts to your list.

Re: Integrating with Mail or Address Book itself (I.e having status) please let Apple know, we need their help to do this.

Re: The country code, you don't need to enter a country code, if you have the option selected in Skype 'For numbers without a country code use' in Preferences -> Calls then this will be smart enough to know how to call these numbers.

Hope this helps
Ryan.

ryanhunt | Thursday, Aug 16

This user also experiencing the mysterious unwanted change-of-status.... I'm trying to stay invisible or online, and it keeps taking me offline. Then it won't easily let me get back online.... usually only after a quit/restart, or restart of the computer. Haven't tried making a call with the new update yet...

cweigand65 | Friday, Aug 17

I can not sign in either.

liwanxi | Friday, Aug 17

Guys, I think, that all login and changing status problems are related to this: http://heartbeat.skype.com/
So, please, as soon, as everything will be ok with network, try this beta again. It's just a coincident.

vika_forever | Friday, Aug 17

"The reason why we display contacts as Name (Home) or Name (Work) is because currently if you add a SkypeOut (I.e ordinary phone number) number to your list, you can only have one number per name. We did it this way to make it easier to be able to then add these contacts to your list."

Ryan, thanks for the response. It seems a lot of people on here have the same opinion that this needs to change. If, like me, you have a good few numbers for each contact in the Address Book, things can start to look pretty ugly when Skype seperates the numbers as it does. It would also be great if the user is able to merge a Skype contact with an Address Book contact who is the same person, but I appreciate this could be difficult. However you look at it, It just seems silly having the same contact listed several times when it would be so much better consolidating all their contact numbers and (ideally) their Skype contact all in one contact name.

wastedyuthe | Friday, Aug 17

It seems as though the sign in problem may of been solved. Can I just say that as frustrating as losing service is, these blogs, and especially the heartbeat blog, are damn useful when there's an issue like this. Problems are at least manageable for customers when we know 1) there is an issue 2) its being resolved..

Nice one.

pete.hobson | Friday, Aug 17

wastedyuthe: just a quick comment on your comment regarding merging numbers - I really love the method used for a normal skype contact who has entered all three standard telephone number slots on their profile. One click here and i can cal home, work or mobile. This is clearly the functionality that should be reflected throughout contacts, expanded only to allow an arbitrary number of contact numbers

pete.hobson | Friday, Aug 17

I take the chance of this blog about Skype for Mac to discuss back about a "painful" Skype's issue: the one that concerns the customization of Datapath, that means accounts, profiles and chat history.
I have asked many many times WHY users shouldn't be free of choosing their user data directories by a simple option in the tools menu. In Windows I have to do that through the procedure of adding the DATAPATH and Removable parameters to the Skype's launch shortcut (so, when I have to install Skype back on a new PC I need a memo if I don't want to loose time because I forget some commas or ").
Now the problems is even worse because I use Skype either from MacOs or from Windows and there seems to be no way to choose a datapath under MacOs, so I'M NOT ALLOWED TO SHARE MY CONVERSATIONS between both OSs. As is possible to write from MacOs to the Windows partition, I'm able, for instance, to share my Firefox and
Thunderbird profiles. No matter which OS I launch them from: I find my emails and settings and browser and their extensions updated because both versions uses their files from the Windows folders.
Is it THAT difficult to add such a comfy option as we have in MSN, for instance? I can't believe it. If you want to protect unexperienced users from mistakes I don't think is the case. I'm sure they won't even notice this path option as they don't in MSN.
Regards, Guglielmo

Pete Hobson wrote;
"I really love the method used for a normal skype contact who has entered all three standard telephone number slots on their profile. One click here and i can cal home, work or mobile". Yes, this is the problem- you have to rely on your contacts to put their various phone numbers into their Skype profile. If they haven't, then there is no way for you to add a number to it on yours, so you have to have a seperate Skype-out contact for the same person. Only, now of course, Address Book integration automatically does this for you. Being a Mac owner for about a month now, I have got used to being able to drag and drop virtually anything. How great would it be to just drag an Address Book phone number into a Skype contact name to consolidate them together?

wastedyuthe | Friday, Aug 17

I'm also having the problems with Skype keeping me in offline/invisible status, both on a Mac Mini G5 and MacBookPro. But my other account on the MacBookPro works fine. Weird.

cnsxxx09 | Friday, Aug 17

I really like the new skype beta version 2.7.0.49 and I find the display of groups and adressbook numbers a great step forward. But I found some bugs and/or missing features too :

- There are not all telephone numbers from the adressbook displayed in skype. The numbers, which have a label different from private, work, mobile or central are not displayed in skype, especially the phone numbers with my own labels are not displayed (and I need them).
- The scroll bar sometimes disappears when it should be there.
- The state of the groups (open or closed) falls back to closed, if you quit and reopen skype. I would like to have the group "online" allways open, and the others mostly closed (because they are too long).

And as mentioned from other users:
- The groups from the adressbook are not displayed in skype.
- The different numbers from one person are not grouped to one contact.

I hope, these bugs and missing features are resolved soon and this great tool gets even better.

dhyananbho | Saturday, Aug 18

And there is one more bug:
- The order of the groups can be rearranged, except the group "adressbook". This is always the last and can not be reordered.

dhyananbho | Saturday, Aug 18

One thing that would be awesome is an option in preferences to allow integration with the tel: URI's on websites. That way we could take advantage of the information that is being marked up with hCard to make a call via Skype simply by clicking the phone number on the website. Should be easy enough to implement by registering with launch services as a handler of tel: links

encro_steviej | Saturday, Aug 18

The address book integration is a great addition but it would be a lot better to have skype keep the same group structure as address book. Basically turning the skye contact list into the address book groups list but with arrows beside them to reveal the enclosed contacts as you have done with skype. Not sure if changes in address book appear immediately in skype but that would be really cool too. Well done and looking forward to seeing future versisons.

mrsheedy | Monday, Aug 20

forgot to add that this would probably better as anoption in the preferences and that if you kept the contacts integration as you have made it then being able to drag contacts into groups would be a lot easier than choosing to do so from menus.

mrsheedy | Monday, Aug 20

I just downloaded the Mac beta and cannot log in. When I remove the beta and reinstall 2.6 I am able to log in. Any suggestions? Thanks!

goodmovealex | Monday, Aug 20

How long before we see games for mac? i keep getting challenged to chess by pc skype 3 users.

john.r.o.ashton | Tuesday, Aug 21

Was just thinking, this version isn't so bad. Like the groups. Like the _option_ of having address contacts.
And then.... realised it has renamed all my original (non address book) SkypeOut contacts to their telephone number. I have no names. This is painful.

dalefoo | Wednesday, Aug 22

I installed 2.7 and it it would not sign me in. The odd thing is that I could receive chats and also could see via Growl that people would sign in or out. But the Skype sign in failed.

Installing 2.6 worked fine again. No problems with sign in.

Just that 2,7 would not sign or log me in. And I tested this several times over the last few days.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

dirkspiers | Wednesday, Aug 22

An amazing beta...beautiful...confortable...wonderful...BUT...I'm a Mac user, we have very hard problems.

1) Why the Mac version is without the videocall snapshot button ? Is too difficult to insert a simple button ?

2) There are very important trouble in the file transfer. If you really want a stronger system, improve the file transfer in Skype. Please read the Italian forum sometime. Anyway I will try to explain the trouble. The ports of the router are open, the firewall is down, the mac surf quickly over the Internet, and over the file transfer of aMSN or ADIUM but skype no. The transfer on skype is on 0,6 KB/s of SPEED ! Absurd! There are many english post on this problem, please improve this system before publish the official version.

edoardolimone | Saturday, Aug 25

a request for a small fix:

A few versions ago (I think I reported it),
the "Search for Skype Users" window lost its resizable attribute,
i.e. the resize grabber -- the striped triangle that appears (usually) in the bottom-right of a resizable window -- was lost.
Please can this be restored.

I have just downloaded version 2.6.0.151 and when I double click to start it just bounces twice in the dock and then quits loading. Am I doing something wrong please?

dennisacorbett | Monday, Aug 27

Great work guys, but my question is: when will Skype for Mac support Skypecasts? There are loads of mac user forced to run their virtual machines with Skype for Windows in order to use Skypecasts!

And there are also a lot of other features present in the windows version that are still missing in the mac one. Please, try to bring the two versions at the same level...

Andrea

blame00 | Monday, Aug 27

Good work guys...the groups tool it's very useful, but I think you should improve it with the option to hide disconnected users!
Some problems with Growl.

destegabry | Monday, Aug 27

When I add contacts from my Address book to another group the only thing that appears in the other group is their phone number. No name or anything. Unless you know every phone number by heart, that's of no use. :)

kaspaar | Monday, Aug 27

Oh, and another thing. I think it's really cool that Skype manages to differentiate between Work & Mobile phone numbers from the same contact so that they appear like this in your contact list:

John (Mobile)
John (Work)

But in the address book you can change these descriptions into for example: landline, standard, international, home, 2nd line... It would be cool if Skype could take these descriptions over as well...

kaspaar | Monday, Aug 27

this beta is not really working for me (newest macbook pro). logs in but shows no contact-list. works after i deleted all my addressbook prefs...even can re-ad all my contacts with skype running and skype ads the "new" contacts afte a while to the addressbook-group. but that is not really satisfying. not recommended!!

maltepost | Monday, Aug 27

Two things needed:

1. Skype should be able to import Address Book groups as well so that I don't have to recreate them all again and fill them with exactly the same contacts. Skype groups should slave off of Address Book groups.

2. Skype should lobby (is that the right word?) Apple to include Skype as an IM option in the IM username field in Address Book. There is no clear way to include a Skype username in the Address Book IM username field.

Many thanks!

dahacouk | Tuesday, Aug 28

Thx for the v2.7.0.49 beta...very impressive.

The improved file transfer manager is excellent...dragging a photo event from iPhoto to tranfer multiple photos/videos via Skype works perfectly! (Transfer speeds little slower than iChat though, hope this can be improved over time...)

And when SkypePrime for Mac???????

sghrunt | Tuesday, Sep 4

Why are new features being added to Skype when so many users are still having problems with audio and visual. I have installed every major upgrade since the Mac 2.5.0.85 release and I have subsequently ended up reverting back to 2.5.0.85 on every occasion. I have 2 Skype accounts, one for business and one for personal use and I love the idea of the new address book feature, but what is the point in having it if the person on the other line can't hear a word I'm saying?

gavraz | Tuesday, Sep 4

^^^^ Same for me!! Still have to use 2.5. and quite frankly I'm giving up on skype!! I'm sick of paying for a skypeln number that tells everyone I'm not available, the voice quality most of the time is appalling. My preferences change without any help from myself. Cuts me off in the middle of calls and quits when it feels like it!! AND, with all the times I have to ring people and the time I spend on it trying to get it to work, it actually works out to be very expensive!!!!! I am just totally sick of it!!!

one very useful feature i saw on skype for PC (yes, my wife uses a PC) was additional tools/plug ins (do more): one that will rock my world is talk and write or whiteboard - but i can't seem to find those i skype for mac, not even in the 2.7 beta. is it me or you can only "do more" on a PC?

on a separate note, my bluetooth earphone (nokia hs-26w) is never recognized. but i guess that is a mac, rather than skype, issue. since i saw pleanty of bluetooth postings, i was wondering if there is a workaround to make it work directly with skype

Hi, am using 2.7.0.49 on an early MB Pro (Intel Dual Core, not the later Intel Dual Core 2), with 10.4.10. I've a bluetooth stereo headset (i.Tech Blueband R). With the Mac support/non-support for the more advanced bluetooth specs, the extra buttons don't work, other than volume up/down. I've set the preferences to use the BT headset and mike for ringing, in-call audio and mic. However, the Skype Chat noise, indicating a message, is still coming from the main speakers.

If I sign out, then the login window is different from that before signing in - missing logo, different width. Additionally it *seems* to not reconnect on logging in under a different name in a subsequent session. I've now tended to kill and restart rather than logout and login.

Groups are a nice addition :)

Sound quality seems unchanged - it is still much better than my other VOIP services, unless they have a dedicated network connection. I still get the Max Headroom audio effects if there's any bandwidth shortfall :)

Cheers, JeremyC.

Using Skype 2.7 on an Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro running 10.4.10 with Free-1 USB phone: A couple of problems: Skype crashes after a few file transfers during a video conference with chat and then will not re-open with the "re-open" button. A machine re-start is necessary. Adding contacts requires quitting Skype and then re-loading before the new contact can be seen in the list. Otherwise, it seems to work OK. I've had no problems with my keychain or anything else. 2.6.0.151 works OK and is more stable than 2.7 for me. For those having problems, I'd suggest deleting com.skype.skype.plist with Skype not running and then re-starting Skype. As for SkypePrime, Windows only again. (Sigh). At least that's slightly better than US only.

I hoped that support for authenticated proxies will be included in this version. On the Mac Skype simply does not work when proxy authtication is set up in the system settings. We use the "Authoxy Workaround", but of course it would be better to have Skype using the Mac OS X proxy settings...

Any hints in which version this will be fixed? (We used 2.6 and now 2.7 Beta and it isn't)

Looks as if you don't plan on delivering ring-count control for forwarding to voice mail or to other phones with this upgrade. It's a pretty basic setting we've been missing for a long time, is it planned to be implemented ever? Thanks!

I have Skype Unimited and am using a MacBook w the newest Skype beta. When I attempt to make a call from Address Book to a regular phone line (really htere is no logical reason to have every contact in both my address book + Skype app) Skype tells me I need to buy credit.

How do I get this to work?

heddagold | Sunday, Sep 30

Somebody else's idea - but I second the motion as this is very important:
"... Also, the whole Address Book is shown in Skype. What I would rather have the chance to add a label "Skype" in Address Book, so that only those contacts that have a Skype number [or those I choose] are shown in Skype window."

Hi everyone - can ANYONE tell me if there is a way to run multiple skype accounts on my mac at the same time? what am i missing. i use skype on both pc and mac. on my pc the entire outlook contacts are available whether they are skype contacts or not. on the mac, i can only view those that i have added as skype contacts, how can i view everyone in my entourage contacts? Thanks.

seth-md | Thursday, Oct 18

I like the idea but I can already dial with Skype directly from my address book. I tried 2.7 but deleted it straight away because I don't want my entire address book in Skype - could there be an option to specify a list within the address book? I already do this with my mobile phone so that I only carry the numbers I need from my full contacts list.

I will install the stable version again. This beta is crashing everytime I close a chat window. :(

kwarts | Friday, Oct 19

after experiencing heavy trouble with skype and checking back with other mac users, i got the link to the 2.7 vers.
but still things sren´t as great as thy could be.
- skype keeps crashing at unexpected actions
- when restarting, it doesn´t remember the users id, and after logging on, all chat histories are gone
- when hitting the button in a chat wndow to add someone to the chat, the appearing window only shows online/ offline-stats, but not the names
- at absolutely unknown events/ actions/ whatever, i cannot copy / paste anything into a chatwindow. Only after quitting the whoöe program and restarting, this will work again.
I really like skype, and seriously hope, that these and the other bugs will be taken care of soon. Skype on Win is so cool, why is this such a problem with mac? i would also like to see larger images of the avatares, this si much better in the win version too.

There is a serious problem in Skype running under Leopard. Please read this forum thread: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=100329

raingrove | Sunday, Oct 28

I have not tried this beta yet, but the previous version 2.6.0.151 overrode the "SMS Message" and "Dial with Cell Phone" options in the Address Book. Now it shows only "Send SMS with Skype" and "Dial with Skype".

THIS IS HARDLY DESIRABLE.

What we want is to be able to choose either a cell phone or Skype. If internet is available, Skype may be preferred since it may be cheaper, but the Internet may not be always available. On the other hand, the Cell Phone may be available most of the time, although the cost may be a bit higher.

Is there a way to toggle this (or both can coexist), or is the Skype only the way once it is installed (I have Skype Out credit).

mozi.mozi | Tuesday, Oct 30

Oops, I think I spoke too soon. I was reading an article which talked about how to use the Address Book "SMS Message" and "Dial with Cell Phone", which never mentioned about a phone plugin. So, I assumed that it should be available out of box as soon as I connect to a mobile via Bluetooth.

However, it turned out to be that I needed a phone plugin to use these.

So, I don't think that Skype disabled these options over Dail with Skype and SMS with Skype. Sorry about that!

I don't know if it's a matter of restarting the mac... It worked for a couple of days, then I tried anew this morning, after having done another couple of restart, and it didn't work anymore. The console message is

02/11/07 12:00:42 [0x0-0x3c73c7].com.skype.skype[5238] Main starting
02/11/07 12:00:42 [0x0-0x3c73c7].com.skype.skype[5238] Check 1 failed. Can't run Skype

the beta version run good on the last mac os x version (leopard) but not skype v6

jules19931993 | Saturday, Nov 3

3 Month after, it still in beta. Come on, what are you waiting for?

nehonhx | Saturday, Nov 3

Could you please please please add the feature that I can set a different status for the contacts in the different groups?
It would be perfect if I could appear offline to the contacts of the "business" group at night and be still shown online for the contacts set as "friends". Otherwise I would have to use one account for business and another one for friends which is quite annoying.
Or is there already another solution for mac users?
Thanks,

Dirk.

I second this request, my address in Skype has like double the number, Peter (Home), Peter,(Work), Peter (Mobile) and so on and on for everyone

'it also seems a little silly that I have the same person as a Skype contact, then as an Address Book contact below it. Shouldn't there be a way to integrate contacts so you can click on one name, then either contact them on their home number, work number, mobile number, or Skype them? Wouldn't that be easier?'

Also I'd love to by sync the other way from Skype back to the address book, why?

well I am getting a Skype phone and want to be able to Sync me numbers the other way.

When is Skype going to get around to enabling "remove contact" from the Contact List? When I "upgraded" from 2.6 to 2.7 beta it imported my entire Address Book, including those with local phone numbers, thus adding dozens of contact to my Skype Contacts list I would like to remove. When I select a contact to remove it the "remove contact" option is ghosted.

This bug has been known since August. Why is it taking so long to remove?

mdcatdad | Saturday, Nov 10

Quite unstable I would say.
- Can't copy / paste from chat windows
- Crashes randomly, often when someone calls.
- Chat history disappeared (that's really bad. I need to know what I have chatted and agreed with people)
- After restarting, contacts and credit were gone for half hour...

Too bad the protocol is too complex to create an open source version... but since I believe open source is the way to go, I might switch one of these days...

hamoid | Sunday, Nov 11

Yes... I prefer open source: OpenWengo

Is it just me or does the video (overlay?) cover the volume slider? If both of us turn off video, the slider re-appears.

Whoa, sorry for the doubleddd posts. If an admin sees this, please delete the previous posts.

I have successfully used the new grouping feature to create some groups I often contact in a multi-user text chat, thus I was hoping that having created a group I could just press the text chat button to send a message to all of them, avoiding the manual "add users" step, but it does not work... is that intentional???

elia_stupka | Thursday, Nov 22

Integration with address book is really nice, but here in Italy there's a problem. You need to dial number with 0 in front and skype strips it from the address book's number.

Hi
I just downloaded 2.7 and it added some icons with telephones I just don't want : one icon with my own name and one with Apple Computer name.
I suspect this is malware as skype must have searched on my internal PC files to find this out. Anyone knows how to get rid of those unwanted icons (I don't want them , period) ?
Besides , the phone numbers are wrong (it looks like it tries to force me to send paying sms to my own number) Also the icon cannot be removed from contact list (contrary to other "normal" skype icons)
Conclusion : suspected malware that spies on internal files in order to feed to the contacts windows and possibly send out info.

fransivatna | Thursday, Nov 29

Dear Francois,
You my dear friend are an idiot. This is not malware and the extra contacts you see in your contacts list are the contacts from your address book in OSX. If you had bothered to open your address book when you purchased your new Mac you would have noticed there were only two contacts in it, Apple and yourself. However, after exploring this neat little application further you would have noted that the Apple developers in there infinite wisdom made it so you could add some more contacts. Also, had you taken the time to read the release notes on this version of Skype you would have known these were your address book contacts and you would not look as stupid as you do now. Fear not my friend, you may remove these "extra" contacts from your list simply by clicking Preferences>General>Settings>Show Address Book Contacts.

2.7.0.195 will not run on leopard. Myself and a colleague have the same problem. It just will not sign in.

siobhanellis | Wednesday, Dec 19

I had the 2.0.0.something version and then downloaded the 2.7 beta because all of a sudden the contacts menu showed options but I couldn't click on them (important ones like "call" or "add a contact").

With 2.7 when I try to call a (landline) contact it just says "You are offline". Reinstalling 2.6.0.184 hasn't helped - it says that I am still "offline" and I can't add/call or delete contacts.

Customer support hasn't responded in 72 hours and Skype "Heartbeat" says things are fine. How have others fixed this problem? I've seen the problem mentioned but haven't seen the fix posted, just the complaints. Any help would be appreciated!

C'mon guys: get the timeout setting before going to voicemail into the client prefs. It's about a 5 minute coding job that just writes a few lines to the xml file....it's a no-brainer, just get it done....

I NEED VIDEO SNAPSHOTS for MAC- why didnt they include this simple feature?

teladesor | Wednesday, Jan 16

have reviewed comments. am disappointed to see the frustration growing with mac users reflecting my own. I am unable to login to 2.7. I see no comments, or help from Skype. As someone spending good money (2 lines- hours of calls to fixed/cell phones) I'm tempted to drop the whole business.

Even this blog is irritating _

Ok
1. when I send A SKYPE message on IM with skype 2.6 u knew that the receiver had not received the message as a yellow message would appear at the top of the screen telling u as much. Now I am not sure if receiver has received or not .

2. I cannot create a chat history at all - THERE ARE NOT TOOL OPTIONS IN PREFERENCES.

These two things are driving me mad - any help out there - does point one make any sense to anyone?

bests

anjalisaga | Thursday, Feb 28

I quote dirk1812.
adding the feature to set a different status for the contacts in the different groups would be great!
I do not want to be bothered by work contacts in the nigh and weekends, (and sometimes, I cannot be online for friends during working hours). Blocking and unblocking everyday it's not practical and can be dangerous. Two accounts is very complicated at this point, and not a flexible solution, so, is there a way to be visible for some groups and invisible for others?

best regards

Still love Skype! Works seamlessly on 1.67 PPC running latest Leopard.

However, I can't figure out how to remove an unwanted contact. In the Contacts menu, "Remove contact" remains greyed out no matter what I do. Can anyone help?

I do think Skype has a moderate learning curve, to be expected.

I have Skype 2.7.0.330 working on mac osx 10.4 behind an authenticated proxy.
Skype 2.7 does use the system proxy settings, including authentication, so there is no need for Authoxy.

I had some older version going behind a proxy with authoxy. But upgrading Skype broke it.

I think I fixed the proxy problem by changing password settings in "Keychain Access.app" There was a skype token thingie which wasn't needed. Skype only needs access to your http and https passwords, nothing more.

My Address Book imported fine into Skype. However, the Country Code (USA for my contacts) doesn't show up when I try to "Skype Out." All I get is a "+" and then the ten-digit number. I should get a "+1" and then the ten-digit number. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
