Skype for Mac on Leopard
By
Villu Arak on November 7, 2007 in Skype for Mac.
Like a lot of people in the Mac community, we’re excited that Mac OS X Leopard is now out in the wild. As you may have read, Skype runs into trouble when Leopard’s firewall is activated. At the moment, this affects a minority of Skype users.
However, we wanted to let you know that we’re embracing Apple’s new security efforts. By doing so, we’re continuing to ensure that Skype for Mac is the most secure internet-calling platform a Mac user can get. Our engineers are tweaking Skype for Mac and as soon as safely possible, the issue will be resolved.
In a few weeks, the fix will be included in an updated version of Skype that has a loving relationship with the Leopard firewall.

Nice to to know that Skype will fix the problem. I'm using Skype with Leopard now with a workaround: installing the Skype-program again and again when starting up. As long as I don't quit Skype it's OK.
Succes and thanks for the info Villu Arak!

There's a simple workaround for this problem:
- Copy Skype from the download image to your Applications folder
- Right-click on Skype and select "Show Package Content" (or similar, I don't have an english version of OS X)
- Select "Framework", "Mac OS" and "Resources" within the folder "Contents" and set files to "protected" via the information window (command+i)
So the OS X firewall can't modify Skype anymore and it works with activated firewill. OK, one negative thing: You'll be asked if Skype is allowed to pass firewall at every startup, now. But much better than reinstalling Skype every time

I'm not convinced this affects a minority only, -it sure affects me and there's a lot of posts about this out there.

While I am glad to see Skype formally acknowledge that this problem exists (it took about 10 days to do so) I would also not classify myself in the minority just because I want my firewall turned on. I don't like to have to choose between an appropriate level of security OR running Skype.
Don't you think current plan to put out a minor security release to fix this issue more than a month after the release of Leopard and with lots of negative press on the issue is too long? Didn't Skype engineers have access to pre-release seeds of Leopard and test it with the firewall running (a fundamental test, especially for a piece of software so dependent on proper firewall rights)? Isn't Skype a member of the Apple Developer Connection under NDA on the code signing changes that were coming in Leopard?
I'm disappointed... IMHO You need to keep your engineers focused on the core issues of reliability, quality, and safety before they go off adding some new widget to the app that truly "a minority" of us will use.

it is really an awful stance that you have taken here in this stance, calling leopard upgraders a "minority".
there were 2 million copies sold in the first weekend.
Skype has had a copy of leopard for over 6 months. and so they never once tested it?
It's not like skype is a free service, many of us are paying customers and the closest you can give us is "a few weeks"
Even if we are a "minority" (which i dont believe we leopard upgraders are in the US) to business, making a statement such as this to us is very condecending. Basically you are saying to us that we are not important enough to put a rush job on fixing something you had over 6 months to fix.

Content wise there is nothing to add to the comments above, they really hit the mark. They point to a lack of development process reliability at SKYPE, which is so fundamental, that I am speechless. Sure - this issue can and will be solved. But it definitely never should have happened. And, guys... the term "minority" is a slap in our face! Pray, that not all of the more than 2 Million Leopard owners use Skype and will post in this Blog...
With kind regards from Germany

Please make a new compatible Version f Skype for Leopard.
I cannot understand why this not work you know that Leopard comes in this Time and you have no good Version for Leopard.
Other Programs like Adium and so on works perfect, why Skype works not with the Firewall ?

Todays OS X update fixes this issue.
kevinmoilar | Thursday, Nov 15
@kevinmoilar
Actually, my testing shows that 10.5.1 released today improves the issue, but does not fix it.
Now you can finally launch Skype more than one time with the firewall set to "Set access for specific services and applications".
However, each time you launch it you will still be prompted as to whether or not you wish to allow this program access through the firewall. Accepting this firewall prompt requires administrator level access since you are changing firewall rules. This means that only admin users will be able to use Skype with the firewall turned on since it requires this firewall setting to be updated each time you start Skype.
Skype, we are still waiting for your update that will resolve this issue for good and allow us to use Skype AND operate our computers securely. Its been approx 20 days since OS X 10.5 was released and still no update from Skype at all.

yes we WANT a new version nowwwww

I think I have a different problem... With Leopard, I can start the latest beta once, and it works nicely! But once I quit I'm not able to launch Skype anymore. The app bounces on the dock but nothing happens.. Any idea about this?
tictactau | Friday, Nov 16
No, OS 10.5.1 update did not fix the problem. I am not using skype and several Mac friends have switched over to iChat.

After two weeks of frustrations about my most basic apps not working as they used to, being cut-off of all my legacy apps and only buggy new features I felt pretty Microsofted. In the mean time I found my solution: I switched back to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. And not only Skype works fine again. For me Apple lost contact with its user base with Leopard.

Anyone know why the iSight camera in my iMac suddenly doesn't work since I installed Leopard? It works with other applications, for instance with Photobooth.

Skype 2.6 worked fine on PowerMac G5 under 10.5. Just updated to 10.5.1 this AM, and Skype now bounces in the Dock but will not open.
Please help, I am a paying customer with SkypeIn and Voicemail.

As promised, a fix is on the way. Please hang on just a little bit more until you can download a version of Skype for Mac that solves the issue. Stay tuned my friends, we'll post the good news on this very blog.

Let me understand: no Skype employee got ADC to test the application before Leopard official release? Are you serious?
michilangelo | Sunday, Nov 25
It's been a month since the official release and still nothing! Given that you would surely have had access to pre-release developer seeds as ADC members (surely!?), why is it taking so long to fix this? Skype has always been sub-standard on the Mac but this is really bad...

I love my mac and I have Leopard - Developing good software is difficult its easy to sit on the sidelines and dictate to Skype and Mr. Villu Arak and tell them what to do but harder to do it. At the end Apple did change the notion of security and even given a pre-release version of the OS and its API Skype is probably having difficulty to implement a solution. If it takes Skype additional time to create stable software then so be it. At the end I would rather have stable software then a patch full of bugs...

Seeing that the newest version of skype is still not working on Leopard - especially for those working with the G4 series (I have an ibook g4 and my newly downloaded skype is not launching), would it be possible to put the version 2.0.0.3 - which apparently works perfectly - up for downloading while we wait for the glitches to be fixed????
I've searched through thousands of forums and old-version sites and 2.0.0.3 doesn't seem to be anywhere!

Just installed skype on a mac running leopard
Great program if you fry your iSight so that it no longer works
So i cant make any video or audo calls with Skype or iChat now, or use my iSight at all
I really like spending hours entering in keywords in google trying to fix something
Needless to say i will never use Skype again

Well even with the latest version of Skype and latest version of Leopard, the two are not working together correctly.
I don't know what is the other users' experience, but SKYPE is the only SW that freezes my machine completely... it needs a hard reset to get back to work.
I have even tried to do a full rebuild of the machine (GOSH hadn't had to resort to such measure in a long time) but nothing.... still freezes.
NOT even office 2007 manages to do such a thing. First time I experience this on a mac, and I have been on macs for about 6 years, since I switched from XP.
I am thinking of not using Skype anymore.... unless there is a prompt response from the Team to solve the problem.
I sincerely hope that the Skype team realizes that developing for Mac is a bit of a challenge, since the users are NOT USED to having the machine freeze like with other OS. Mac OS is very robust, but of course not infallible, and it is the SW producer responsibility to develop up to a certain standard.
I hope that Skype SW will meet MAC user's expectation on quality.
Thank you Skype Team
