This trip is really affecting my body. Legs and arms numb with pins and needles for most of flight from Darwin. Got a 13hr one in a few minutes so hope it's nothing drastic. At this rate I won't be able to walk off the plane, let alone travel across America. So much for perpetual motion.
9 response(s) to "Numb":
Travel can wreak havoc on your body - it's mostly a mixture of dehydration, sleep issues (jet lag), poor air qulaity and lack of movement. Annette and I travel a lot and here's a few things that will help if you do them: get horizontal and sleep until you wake up naturally (if you can swing a massage beforehand that'll be heaven), drink lots of water or anything not too sugary or with alcohol.
Then to reset your internal clock do these three things:
1) Drink something caffeinated (not all day, just early in this 3-step process)
2) get out and walk about in the sunshine (best done during the 1st half of the day) which helps set your circadian rhythms
3) go to bed at a normal time for the time zone you are presently in and try to not get up and start being active until the next morning/day
You'll make it. Just keep in touch with people who care and allow people to help you if you are in need. For all their bad press of late, Americans tend to be people who seek to help their fellow man/neighbor/woman.
This is what I love about the internet - 5mins ago I had no idea who the heck you were. Then I saw you appear on my Skype window, and clicked.
Now I'm sat here in awe of what you are doing. I could never manage it. I get so ratty if I go without decent sleep for more than a day or two!
The World needs more people like you - although, that would make the airports even more congested!!
All the best,
Bazza

Sounds like a wonderful trip - just got back from a month-long trip to AUS with a stop in HK on the way. To add to the tips for long flights, I had a foot massage before leaving Hong Kong. I always find it helps and wish it were so inexpensive elsewhere. Also, this year, we tried travel socks (chaussettes de contention, in French). That was great - hardly any foot and ankle swelling.
