Each year 22 million people from all over the world visit this wonder of a city. While tourism is the cities bread and butter, it has begun to take over. Venice used to be inhabited by 300,000 Venetians, now only 60,000 remain. Tourism has forced them out of their city by pushing prices up and overcrowding the city all year round.
At the moment, hotels can establish themselves and then purchase the surrounding residential homes to convert into hotel rooms, forcing the Venetians out. The general wear and tear of the city is likely to see it deteriorating at a rapid rate. If you want to see Venice retain some of its authenticity, and help the locals live in their birth city, sign the 40XVenice petition now.
