Skype misidentified as malware

By My status Villu Arak on April 23, 2008 in Reviews and news.

Earlier this week, security researchers at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center discovered that some Microsoft antimalware products such as Windows Live OneCare were incorrectly identifying some versions of Skype as malware. Such products may stop Skype’s operation and falsely notify the user about the following malware: Trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!D.

The issue may have affected users of the following Microsoft antimalware products: Microsoft Forefront Client Security, Windows Live OneCare and Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner. Microsoft has already released an update (a fixed signature file) which was pushed to users of Microsoft's antimalware products.

Once the fixed signature is deployed, Skype should be able to run normally. The fix is included in signature files version 1.31.9121.0 and higher. More information is available here.

Palonek: MS getting into VOIP market and yet their products mis identify Skype and other VOIP software as viruses and other threats. Thus people who use these products ether uninstall and then reinstall or stop using them period. Even once the mess has been cleaned up, people are still distrustful of the misidentified product. What would be a neat way around this is if Skype detected the incorrect version of the CareOne from Microsoft and notified the user of the error in that software... not that would be great. Hi,

Maybe a part of the security model Skype could investigate would be customer service that actually responds!!!

I have had my SkypeOut account blocked since June 10 with no explanation ("for my protection" bla bla bla). If you check your forums you'll see this is happening to a lot of people. And Skype CS is just ignoring us. "We will respond in 48 hours to most support requests" BULLCRAP I have waited 3 weeks. Others much longer.

Basically, as far as it appears so far, Skype has stolen my money.

I am contacting computer news sites to see if any are interested to run a story about this kind of, what amounts of theft of users money and huge inconvenience.

I guess this still doesn't make Skype application malware, but unless remedied it would appear to make the Skype company a pack of thieves.

I only wish I had the option of using an alternative. The day I do you can guarantee that my customer loyalty to Skype is now in the deep negatives.

I agree with jjhinoz! I just got my account, and already it is blocked with no answer from CS. I paid money, and now am not recieving anything for that.

Anyone know why my account could be blocked?!
