I received a so called official notice from Skype China last night, said I've won RMB96,000 and a car. I was asked to find related info and submit my personal info via http://sky234.41la.cn/

They instructed me to deposit $1,800 as service charge to a registered bank in Hong Kong, and deposit must be made before claiming the prize money and the new car.

Am sure this is a SCAM and shouldn't SKYPE CHINA office do something about it as this's serious crime!!!

The least SKYPE CHINA should do is notifying all skype users in this region to ensure no skype users would fall for this SCAM!!!

I searched a few scam websites and found a very similar one listed on http://www.419baiter.com/_scam_emails/419_emails.html

Dirty scam artists...I made a new email and they sent an email saying i had to contact someone at halifax bank plc, aston upon (something) in the uk. Dirtbags..

Can this be reported somehow?

I was sent a letter from a Mr. Gerold Billington stating that I have won 565,750.00 GBP and he later referred me to a Sir Charles Morgan to my amazement it was indeed a Nigerian, asking me for information as to how I would like to receive payment. What made it suspicious,is the part that stated that if I come in person with the necessary information I would be paid in cash. The other thing that give them away is batch number, instead of having 2 letters, then 3 numbers then another 4 numbers they have 2 letters and 2 numbers. These people need to be prosecuted.If the skype authorities further evidence, I am willing to let you have them.

Here it is June 2009 and the same scammers are apparently still running the same "Skype Lottery" scam.

At this point, the question really becomes, how come Skype is letting people use their name so freely? The latest I got was from a user named,

Wouldn't it be extremely simple for Skype to filter out all such user names?

I imagine they already have a list of obscene and other unacceptable words. Why are they letting obvious scammers impersonate the Skype company, on Skype's own system?

So how about it, Skype? Are you going to take any action here other than "warning" people after the scams have gone out?

Nothing is for free. Nothing!

Not even a lottery ticket, that you would need in order to win. Why would any company, organisation etc. give anything for free away? Well, in order to promote themselves, getting goodwill, marketing etc. BUT, then they would make a huge marketing campaign first, then there might be a lottery with some winnings.....maybe....

Do not blame skype for these scams, just be very carefull yourself!

I posted a comment at my website blog shop.scotsmansecurity.com regarding another scam that involves real estate. Like most aspects of security, education and awareness is one of the best forms of defense. Don’t respond to anything unless you check it out properly. There are so many services available that let you confirm businesses, phone numbers, addresses, etc. Many websites now list scams as they appear. Type in some keywords related to the email, letter or phone call you received and see what comes up. If you are still unsure and are not web savy - ask someone who is. Better safe than scammed.

I seem to be one of the victims in this disguised "skype" who received a similar notice to be rewarded such a fantastic sum of $ 2 million from a man called "Barry David".
After returned mail to him he rang me up from somewhere with a weird accent English that I hardly understand. he firstly ask me about my reference number etc. I think he either sounds Arabic or Indian of some sort. However, while talking on the phone, a mail is sent to me telling about his representative Bank of China in Guangzhou and stated that I will be contacted in order to get the sum transferred. Anyway, i am going to push the matter through to see what actually is going on.
I hope Skype could publicize this action widely through "Skype" in order to warn everyone else on the matter.
