Live from CeBIT

By My status Tony Saigh on March 10, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

I just wanted to quickly share some of the exciting new Pocket PC devices I've seen at CeBIT. The great news for Skype users looking to go mobile is that more and more Pocket PC devices capable of running Skype are becoming available and devices are becoming smaller and with new features being added such as QWERTY keyboards, GPS etc.

What's particularly interesting is the growing number of Pocket PC devices with QWERTY keypads. These devices are great for using the chat feature of Skype. I've been lucky enough to get a pre-release hw6900 mobile messenger from the nice guys at HP. Using Skype on the hw6900 at CeBIT means that I've been able to have conversations with all my Skype contacts over IM, which meant that I'm accessible at all times and that I don't end up having a huge pile of emails (well not that huge anyway) when I've got back to my laptop.

BenQ Mobile (Hall 26) also announced their P50 successor, the P51 Pocket PC, which has a QWERTY keyboard, integrated GPS and will come with Skype. It's well worth popping over to their stand or checking out their website to see the P51 and all the other new handsets from BenQ.

Another interesting device is from Fujitsu Siemens (Hall 1) - the Pocket LOOX T830, which has integrated WiFi, a QWERTY keyboard and also runs Skype. It's one of the few 3G Pocket PC devices around and Fujitsu Siemens are clearly serious about mobility so expect to see more devices from them in the future.

We've been working with E-TEN for some time now and their M600 Pocket PC phone which comes with Skype is also on view in Hall 26 and they've done some great work here. It's one of the smallest Pocket PC phones on the market and is great for Skype. Also worth looking at are devices from Mio (Hall 2).

So just a quick thank you to all our partners and for Skype users looking to go mobile, there's an ever-expanding range of devices from our partners for you to choose from. One things for sure, the mobile team at Skype are working hard together with our partners to ensure Skype users will have even greater choice so expect more devices in the coming months.

Watch this space...

Tony

I just fell in love with the new o2 XDA Exec. This phone has integrated Wifi. It also comes complete with a built in web cam. I sure hope that future versions of skype mobile will include options to use the webcam feature.

You can find out all about the Netgear WiFi phone in the press release: http://www.skype.com/company/news/2006/skype_ces_netgear.html.

We also support many WiFi Pocket PC phones as well: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile.

Hope this helps.
