Skype Gear chats to Niklas Zennström

So Skype's co-founder and Chief Exec Niklas Zennström gave us a little bit of his time this week to talk about Skype, the cordless universe (aah bliss!), and everything gadget-related. Full text of the interview below...
What are your favourites Skype certified products and why?
NZ: Cordless phones - Wifi phones in particular, both Belkin and Netgear because you can use them away from your computer. And of course the Sony Mylo which you can also use for music…
My problem with gadgets is that they are never compatible…. Each of them comes with a different charger, different cables, etc. We want to be device-agnostic, you should be able to use Skype on any platform: PDAs, mobile phones, DECT phones, etc….
What kind of gadget buyer are you?
NZ: I am an early adopter but I always get frustrated….it’s never perfect enough for me!
When did you first use a Skype phone?
NZ: It was in Stockholm in 2003. I went down to an internet café and made a Skype call over Wifi using an old traditional handset connected to my laptop. It was like using a Mobile phone for the first time back in the 80s….
What is your vision for future hardware products?
NZ: Skype has traditionally been on the PC. Skype needs to grow outside the PC. The PC is a better platform to develop on for innovation. But we are working on bringing more innovations to devices too, we will be adding more features.
Devices for Skype without a PC are coming out now. Mylo is the threshold and the beginning of high quality devices.
People will feel like talking much more with next generations of Wifi phones. Today it is all about talking, but already Sony Mylo is about chat & text, etc.

I would also like to see high quality video.
What’s also missing is more high quality speakerphones for business use. We have the ones from Polycom but we need more of those. Ideally you would want a combination of Mylo & Polycom speakers…
What are the key features that you would like to see on Skype devices next year?
NZ: Definitely video!!!
Will Skype start doing their own Hardware?
NZ: Today we are working closely with everyone, chip manufacturers, OEMs, retailers, across the value chain to make the best Skype certified hardware, and acting as match makers to get the best possible products. Working with the best brands and the industry leaders in the telephony, networking, and consumer electronics industries adds best value. We would never be able to match the product quality of a company like Sony or Philips anyway.
