Skype PC-free phones and chat - a mystery solved!
By
Stephen Pinches on November 3, 2006 in Skype hardware tips.
I've been playing around with the SMC wifi phone for a couple of days (more to follow on that one...), and a couple of people told me they received a message from Skype when they sent me messages in chat, telling them in no uncertain terms that I didn't want to talk to them.
Well, OK, in many cases they were right, and at first I thought this might be some kind of clever new Skype widget which was detecting my mood and automatically filtering my calls (please, somebody, invent one of those!!). However, one of our crack team of developers over in Tallinn has put me straight: Skypers will get this message if they message someone logged into a Skype phone which doesn't need a PC to run, such as the SMC or Belkin wifi phones, the Netgear SPH101 or Philips VOIP841. Just something to be aware of if your buddies think you're being antisocial...!

Wireless phones (DECT, GSM, etc.) _usually_ DO support sending and receiving messages. Are the Skype PC-free phones supposed to support chats in some near future (at least with firmware update)? Or not to expect with current incarnations?

ps_at_tm - as this class of devices evolves, you can see it having different levels of support for various Skype features like Skype chat. For example, Sony Mylo supports chat just fine, while some other devices don't (but their future versions might).
