CES 2007: Make Skype or landline calls from Netgear's new cordless phone...without using a PC!
By
Stephen Pinches on January 8, 2007 in CES 2007, Cordless phones, Netgear.
So CES is officially "go" today, and first off the block for Skype announcements we have Netgear's cordless SPH200D.
Sharing a very similar design to the company's existing wifi Skype phone the SPH101, the SPH200D is designed to let users make both regular landline calls as well as both free Skype-to-Skype calls and cheap SkypeOut calls to regular landlines or mobile phones.
Similar to other cordless phones such as the DUALPhone 3088 and Philips VoIP841, the SPH200D's basestation simply plugs straight into the back of your existing wifi or Ethernet router. This means you can place the phone itself in its cradle in a completely different location around the house away from your router and the basestation, providing it's within the range of the handset. And if your house is REALLY big, or you just have multiple teenagers in it, your telephoning power can be extended with up to three extra SPH150D handsets.
Using the latest incarnation of DECT, which operates at 1.9Ghz, means that the phone is specifically designed not to interfere with frequencies used for your wifi setup, which is obviously critical for this kind of phone.
The SPH200D is quoted as having immediate availability with an RRP of $200. It's on Amazon.com now for $179.99(although with a long lead time quoted on delivery), and will be in the US Skype Store very shortly. Details on rollout in other regions shortly.

Hey,
nice to hear, but too bad, only DECT..
I thought this is DECT and WiFi..
At least the SPH150D should support both wireless protocols..!
As an DualMode Phone I understand you can use it with DECT and WiFi network..
I mean the you can use it as DECT Phone at home and you can use it on the go with WiFi, this would be really cool
best regards,

When they say dual-mode skype phone, they usually mean that it works by making calls over skype, and a normal PSTN telephone line (the one in your home i.e. Verizon, ...). I still really think that this phone is great. I use one at college, and it allows me to save a lot of dough and cell minutes. Call quality is excellent. In the near future, when there is a better wifi phone available, I may invest my cash to get one.
