CES 2007: The Nokia N800 Skype-enabled some time around the middle of the year
By
Stephen Pinches on January 15, 2007 in CES 2007, Nokia, Skype Mobile.
The Nokia N800 has already begun shipping in the US, and although we may have to wait a while before Nokia's latest internet tablet gets full Skype support, their announcement at CES that the N800 would add Skype calling to its list of features some time around the middle of the year is most definitely good news.
For those who haven't seen it, the N800 is Nokia's upgrade to the existing 770 tablet, but with a seriously extended specification. It's designed very much as a 'lifestyle' device and, to quote the release, "is built to be constantly in use", something that is very evident from the design.
For a US RRP of $399.99, you basically get a fully-fledged, Linux-powered handheld PC which weighs just 206g all-in. The 256mb of internal memory can be augmented via two hot-swappable memory card slots which each take up to 2GB memory cards for extended storage (it comes with an extra 128mb card to get you going), and you can communicate with the outside world via the tablet's high-speed wifi and Bluetooth connections. It can also, provided you have a separate Bluetooth GPS unit, do SatNav when you're in the car.
From an audio and visual perspective, the N800 has a touch-sensitive 800x480 screen, stereo speakers and a high quality mic, so hopefully Skype will work a treat when it is finally added.
Additionally, bearing in mind this device comes from a Finnish company (Nokia) and uses a kernel largely developed by Finn Linus Torvalds, features a browser from a Norwegian-based company (Opera), and will soon incorporate software from an Estonian company founded by Niklas Zennström (Swedish) and Jaanus Friis (grew up in Denmark), this device must mark a new chapter in neighbourly love between all of these Nordic and Baltic countries. Come on Iceland, Latvia and Lithuania, join the party! ![]()

Having picked up an N800 in the States this week, I have to say it's a pretty good bit of kit. Everything about it has a quality feel. The only thing missing is Skype, but when it gets here it will be pretty spectacular! The whole package just cries out for Skype, and I for one will be checking out the N Series website for the upgrade on a daily basis.

I'm so glad I ran across the Nokia N800, has every feature I need, except skype, at a reasonable price. I look foward to when Skype is available for the N800.

Well, five months down the line I find that the N800 gets more use than the laptop around the home. The more I use it, the more impressive I find it. This is no flash-in-the-pan device, it's a serious and useful bit of kit. I am looking into subscribing to the Cloud network to give me broader coverage while I am out and about. The screen is excellent, the battery life impressive and the only thing still missing is Skype. It's the middle of the year and it still ain't here!

I feel the same. I've been waiting for several months in anticipation of the Skype roll-out on the N800. I'm beginning to wonder if an iPhone wouldn't have been a better investment... Any word from the techies at Skype or Nokia would be much appreciated.

Not long now - 5 months and hopefully well worth the wait!
Will - nuts about N800!
